Mike Bloomberg Speaks the Truth About Race and Crime

The knives are out for former New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who would like to be president. A 2015 video has come to light, in which he talked realistically about race, crime, and stop and frisk. He has disavowed stop and frisk, in an attempt to attract black Democrat voters, but in this clip, he justified it:

Ninety-five percent of your murders — murderers and murder victims — fit one M.O. You can just take the description, Xerox it and pass it out to all the cops. They are male minorities, 16 to 25. That’s true in New York. That’s true in virtually every city. And that’s where the real crime is. You’ve got to get the guns out of the hands of the people that are getting killed.

“Conservatives” are having a field day.

Donald Trump Jr., was also outraged:

Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk and Benny Johnson, leaders of a “conservative” college group, piled on:

No one seems to remember that in 2016 then-candidate Donald Trump called for a “nationwide stop and frisk policy.”

But was Michael Bloomberg right about violent crime? Let’s take murder. Last year, according to NYPD statistics, 95.1 percent of murder victims in New York City were minorities — Mr. Bloomberg was spot on. What about suspects? Ninety-three percent were black or Hispanic, even though they accounted for only 51 percent of the population. Arrest figures were the same. Whites were 35 percent of the population but accounted for only 3 percent of murder suspects and 3.3 percent of arrests.

How about robbery? Blacks: 66.2 percent of suspects and 59.4 percent of arrests. Hispanics: 27.1 percent of suspects and 32.2 percent of arrests. Whites: 4.3 percent of suspects and 5.2 percent of arrests.

And for shootings (when a bullet is fired and hits a person, whether he is killed or not): Blacks: 74.4 percent of suspects and 71.6 percent of arrests. Hispanics: 22 percent of suspects and 24.1 percent of arrests. Whites: 2.4 percent of suspects and 2.7 percent of arrests.

There are similar disproportions for other crimes. The 2019 report even includes race statistics on stop and frisk, which indicate that they match the racial patterns of violent felony suspects (and arrestees) almost perfectly. Blacks: 59.3 percent of suspects and 60.3 percent of stop and frisk. Hispanics: 30.1 percent of suspects and 29.2 percent of stop and frisk. Whites: 6.2 percent of suspects and 8.1 of stop and frisk.

What about when Mike Bloomberg was mayor? The figures were very similar. In his last year, 2013, only 2.3 percent of people arrested for shootings were white.

That year, Mr. Bloomberg complained whites were stopped and frisked too often, considering their low crime rates. And Donald Trump agreed:

Today, this was Mr. Trump’s reaction to the Bloomberg tape: “WOW, BLOOMBERG IS A TOTAL RACIST!”

Later he deleted the tweet, but what could be more pathetic than Donald Trump calling someone a “total racist” not only for telling the truth but for saying something Mr. Trump publicly agreed with seven years ago? When will “conservatives” ever get over their contemptible compulsion to call white people “racists”?

Correction, Feb. 12, 2020: Later the same day, Donald Trump said that he did favor “stop and frisk” and that Mr. Bloomberg should never have apologized for it.


This sounds more like the president we voted for.
