Griese Suspended 1 Game for Montoya Remark

More news stories on Bizarre Racism Charges

Fox Sports, October 27, 2009

ESPN broadcaster Bob Griese has been suspended one week for a remark he made about NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya.

{snip}

Krulewitz says ESPN has spoken to Griese and “he understands the comment was inappropriate.”

During ESPN’s broadcast of the Minnesota-Ohio State game Saturday, a graphic was shown listing the top five drivers in NASCAR’s points race. Fellow analyst Chris Spielman asked where was Montoya, who is Colombian.

Griese replied he was “out having a taco.”

Political correctness “has gotten way out of control,”… “I really think we are at a point in this country where people really need to take the thumb out of their mouth and grow a little bit.

Thank you, Larry the Cable Guy. Truer words have not been spoken in way too long.

“Griese replied he was “out having a taco.”

Oh, so what? Who cares? Besides, Tacos are Mexican food, not Columbian.

I wonder. If this guy was Irish and Griese said he was out having corned beef and cabbage, would the PC’ers have gotten their bowels in an uproar? Or if this guy was Italian and Griese said he was out eating spaghetti and meatballs, would the Pc’ers object to that, too?

This is beyond bizarre. This is absolutely ludicrous.

While Montoya himself, didn’t make a big issue about it, Griese was ignorant in that maybe he didn’t know Juan Pablo Montoya is from Colombia- not Mexico. So the taco reference doesn’t apply to Montoya.

ESPN seems to get their panties in a twist lately. First, one of their female reporters is secretly videotaped, then they fire Steve Phillips because he had an affair with a co-worker, now this.

Once again, a White becomes his own worst enemy by kow-towing to this ridiculous “punishment.” If you’re going to say anything in public you better be ready to stand with it. Groveling and “admitting” to an indiscretion when NO INDISCRETION

5 — Anonymous wrote at 7:15 PM on October 27:

What if he was actually out having a Taco? Wouldn’t that make it even more insidious. . (sarcasm off)

6 — me_leelee wrote at 7:25 PM on October 27:

So, what’s wrong with having a taco? Maybe he was. And maybe they are just too sensitive to every word uttered in jest in this country.

7 — Madison Grant wrote at 7:28 PM on October 27:

But wait, it get’s worse!

The NY Daily News referred to the word ‘taco’ as a “racial slur”.

And now even after twice apologizing and groveling Griese was still suspended for a week.

8 — Civilized Neighbor wrote at 8:08 PM on October 27:

It probably was offensive but not for the reason they think. ESPN probably thinks it was offensive because it was a white guy saying it about a Hispanic guy.

If I am not mistaken, tacos are a Mexican food. I know some about Central and South American cultures and one thing is for sure: they DO NOT like being mistaken for Mexicans because they view Mexicans much the same way white Americans view Mexicans (mestizos, not white Spanish Mexicans).

9 — Brian G. wrote at 8:12 PM on October 27:

What’s so wrong with that comment? Would it be offensive if he said ‘out having a beer’, or ‘out having a smoke’. I mean seriously!

When told a comment is “racist”, one should immediately get offended at the accuser and demand they explain why it’s racist. And one should not allow the accuser to separate themselves from the supposedly offended group by stating “some might find that offensive”. Force the accuser to state why, and then immediately accuse the accuser of racism for telling you that a taco is a Hispanic food, and you noticed the persons race when making your comment. Respond by stating that the fact that the accuser noticed the race of the subject, and the origin of the food, in turn makes the accuser a racist. And therefor, the accuser needs to apologize to you for using their racism to attack your sensibilities.

It all boils down to getting the person to define racism, and immediately showing that the accuser themselves fall under their own definition of what’s “racist”.

Soon Bob Griese won’t be allowed to pronounce his own last name lest someone get the wrong idea and be offended.

11 — Petrarch wrote at 8:33 PM on October 27:

If the driver had been British…The white old fashioned kind… and the commentator said he was out having fish and chips.. or if he were a southerner and it went …out having chicken and biscuits I don’t think it would have been anything but if it were a black and fried chicken came up or Mexican and taco … its different because these latter groups are not traditionally as welcomed into this nation. Its a double standard perhaps with a minor justification but I think the suspension is pure overkill. How many times have German accents been expressions of devient heartlesness in the media without any censorship?

12 — ice wrote at 8:42 PM on October 27:

Like all the mestizos, I think he should apologize too.

It’s a terrible insult to accuse anybody of eating a taco.

13 — GenX in Oz wrote at 9:11 PM on October 27:

It’s a nasty stereotype that Colombians or that any Latin Americans eat Taco’s perpetuated by the White man to ‘keep them down.’

In actuality, it is well documented that duck a l’orange is the preferred dish for those who originate from south of the border.

In the time of political correctness the first thing to go is our senses of humor.
In my opinion, the best jokes are the ones where the teller has to look around 360 degrees before telling.
Who here has heard of a recent ‘good joke’ that starts along the lines of “a Pollack and Irishman and a Russian walk into a bar…”
They just don’t make them anymore.

Hispanics are notorious for driving drunk. Does NASCAR give Montoya a breathalyzer before each race?

15 — Mike Harrigan wrote at 9:22 PM on October 27:

Perhaps Montoya was out having a taco.

16 — 9mmMax wrote at 9:23 PM on October 27:

Our once civil society is sinking into utter nonsense. I suppose if fellow Purdue alumni Bob Griese was said to be out having a hamburger, then the individual commenting would be upbraided for insensitivity to Caucasians? This has become so ridiculous that the only reasonable response is ‘Get a life, Olbermann Junior’.

17 — Anonymous wrote at 9:30 PM on October 27:

How preposterous. Would Mr Griese have been suspended for saying that Jeff Gordon was out having a cheeseburger? I think not. Mr. Griese should have told ESPN that he stands by his comment and that if they suspend him or fire him that he would see them in court.

18 — Peter K wrote at 10:13 PM on October 27:

I agree that this statement was inappropriate because it was an ignorant statement. Columbians aren’t Mexicans. It would be just as inappropriate and ignorant if the driver was Chinese and he said he was “out eating sushi”. I don’t agree with the suspension but if you are going to make jokes about other people’s cultures, it help it you at least get the culture right.

19 — Jake wrote at 11:53 PM on October 27:

The double standard is alive and well. Whites cannot even make a joke without being punished. The same is not true of other races.
White people need to start thinking of themselves as a disadvantaged class, after all, the feds classify them as “Non-Hispanic white”. How many examples of racism in the form of organized groups such as NAACP, LA RAZA and so forth do we need before we wake up. Our children and grandchildren will have less opportunity because we have no organized effectively to sue for our rights. We must adoptthe methods of the other races to organize, agitate, and threaten to sue every time a white person is denied opportunity. The civil rights laws should work in white’s favor, also.
Krulewitz and ESPN suck!

20 — Flamethrower wrote at 1:33 AM on October 28:

At least he didn’t say he was out raping a White teenager or smoking some of that Columbian weed.

21 — rdg wrote at 5:16 AM on October 28:

Michael Schumacher wasn’t on the list. He must of been out eating wienerschnitzel.

22 — Shawn (the female) wrote at 10:22 AM on October 28:

I beg your pardon. Bob Griese does NOT understand the comment was NOT inappropriate. What he does understand is that he has to lie and grovel and pretend to be remorseful for nothing he should have to be remorseful for to keep his job.

23 — citizenX wrote at 11:18 AM on October 28:

If someone said I, as a white guy, was out having a burger or hot dog, I wouldn’t get my knickers in a twist…this is ridiculous..PC run amok!!!

24 — Frank wrote at 12:33 PM on October 28:

Heavens to Betsy! Doesn’t he know that you can’t say things like that? After all, where does he think he is, in a country with freedom of speech?

25 — Ned wrote at 1:10 PM on October 28:

The funny part of this whole story is, He Really Was In The Pit Area “Eating A Taco”

26 — Anonymous wrote at 1:57 PM on October 28:

Think what Howard Cosell might have said! In one game I remembe he stated,”Look at that little monkey run!”. In another he stated, “He came from nowhere!” Don Meredith calmly told him that the program stated that the guy came from New Hampshire to which Howare reiterated, “He came from nowhere!” Good thing Howard has gone to his just rewards.

27 — john wrote at 2:33 PM on October 28:

This is truly outrageous. In the years I traveled in Latin America I never saw a taco in Colombia.

Montoya has every reason to feel outraged about this incident. Griese, ignorant lout that he is, was miscasting Montoya as a Mexican.

28 — Michigan Patriot wrote at 9:05 PM on October 28:

At least this liberal, p.c. mangement of E.S.P.N. ‘s anti-Catholic/ Notre Dame University feelings ; didn’t ” Griese ” the skids for Bob. They are so ” generous “! About 2 years ago a Jewish -American female reporter for this sports station , who had attended U of Michigan; got an extra- week’s paid vacation for her anti-Catholic/ Christian comment against Notre Dame University on the Bob Golic sports Radio Show.
