Riot Erupts at State Prison In Chino

More news stories on Racial Conflict

AP, Sept. 23

CHINO, Calif.—It took about three hours for guards to restore order after 200 inmates rioted Thursday night at prison in California.

Guards at the California Institution for Men in Chino used foam bullets, pepper spray and tear gas to get about 200 inmates back under control.

Corrections spokesman Todd Slosek says the trouble began shortly before seven Thursday night in a housing unit reception. It’s not clear who started it, but Slosek said it appears black and Latino inmates squared off.

He said no guards were hurt but five inmates had to be hospitalized.

Television images showed a number of the inmates wearing just their underwear and slippers as they were escorted from a prison yard by guards.
