NCC Board Approves Kichi ZīBī MīKan as New Name for Sir John A. MacDonald Parkway

It’s official: Kichi Zībī Mīkan will be the new name for the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway.

Kichi Zībī Mīkan (pronounced Kich-ee Zee-bee MEE-khan) is the original Algonquin name for the Ottawa River and translates as “Great River Road.” {snip}

Originally known as the Western Parkway or the Ottawa River Parkway, the roadway was renamed after Canada’s first prime minister in 2012 by the federal Conservative government. But pressure mounted to strip Macdonald’s name because of his role in Canada’s residential school system.
