Al Sharpton Calls for Federal Police Laws After South Carolina Killing

Jillian Jorgensen, Observer, April 8, 2015

Rev. Al Sharpton called for national policing legislation akin to the Civil Rights Act this morning at the kickoff his National Action Network’s annual convention, just after the arrest of a white South Carolina police officer for murder in the shooting of an unarmed black man.

“There must be national policy and national law on policing,” Mr. Sharpton said. “We can’t go from state to state, we’ve got to have national law to protect people against these continued questions.”

Mr. Sharpton’s comments, coming on the heels of multiple instances of police killings of unarmed men of color around the country, were met with applause from the crowd–and from the dais, which was packed with elected officials including Mayor Bill de Blasio, Congressman Charles Rangel, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, city Comptroller Scott Stringer and state Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.

Mr. Sharpton praised the city’s mayor and police chief for bringing the charges, but said the nation couldn’t rely on the judgement of local officials.

“We commend them, but we cannot have a justice system that hopes we have a mayor in the right city or a police chief,” he said. “We have to have one policy that is national.”

Mr. Sharpton later noted that the comparatively small town’s officials had been braver than police leaders in bigger cities. He has been vocal about his belief that New York City police Daniel Pantaleo should have been charged with a crime in the death of an unarmed black Staten Island man, Eric Garner. A grand jury declined to indict Mr. Pantaleo, spurring protests throughout the city.

That death, too, was captured in a widely published video. And though the footage did not lead to any charges, Mr. Sharpton said today the national legislation should focus on “cameras” as well as “accountability.”

  • Shut up, Al. You’ve already got the facts on your side. Don’t ruin it by your usual publicity seeking self-aggrandizement.

Incidentally, the NYT is making a big deal out of the fact that the NCPD is way whiter than North Charleston. Would black cops have mattered? After all, the second cop on this scene was black, and he lied in his paperwork about having administered CPR to Scott, when the video shows he never did.

    • BloodofAlbion75

Sharpton doesn’t know how to shut up. That troublemaking demagogue is not going to stop insinuating himself into every publicized officer-involved shooting in this country until he’s incited enough of his fellow black thugs to start rioting, looting and burning in communities all across the (formerly) “United” States of America.

      • Nonhumans

I say let them. If it reaches into “Civilized” areas, I and a lot of other Real Americans will have no trouble “Defending” our “Property”.

    • groidle

      > Shut up, Al. You’ve already got the facts on your side.

      By pure coincidence.

      • Optics matter. Sharpton should know that he’s so toxic that his inserting himself into this matter is going to swing people away from Scott’s side and toward the side of the cop. If he truly cares about finding the truth, he’ll shut up for awhile and go into hiding. But he doesn’t truly care about finding the truth; he truly cares about truly lining his pockets.

        • anony

And, he’s not smart enough to understand your points.

  • Hilis Hatki

According to “Al Sharpton logic” this case proves every black shot by a white was unjustified. They are going to get alot of frequent flyer mileage out of this one.

    • Susannah

Most of the MSM will go with that, I have no doubt.

The Blacks see their crimes against Whites including cop killing and rape as “Revenge” or as Black Panther Eldridge Cleaver called his raping of underage White girls “A revolutionary act”.

  • Reynardine

Justice looks like it’s being done. Why do we need to bring in the Feds?

    • bilderbuster

      It is and we don’t.
The question that should be asked is why do the likes of Sharpton and Co. want to Federalize the laws?

      • anony

To give more power to the TOTAL STATE. Remember, they are only tools of TPTB.

  • A Freespeechzone

This incident is just another fund raising opportunity for Sharpton.

    • Hilis Hatki

He needs gas for his Rolls Royce Phantom.

    • Lexonaut

No. It’s the beginning of the formation of the US equivalent of the Brown Shirts in 1930s Germany.

It will not surprise me if Obama refuses to step down, citing the upcoming massive riots and racial unrest as the reason that the nation needs a steady hand at the helm, the election to be held at the earliest reasonable opportunity, but with martial law in the meantime.

      • Awakened Saxon

Lexonaut: No. It’s the beginning of the formation of the US equivalent of the Brown Shirts in 1930s Germany.

        America is becoming National-Socialist?

        • Lexonaut

No, but it’s becoming totalitarian — National Communist, if you will.

Once the local police forces have been disarmed federalized, the administration will have a completely free hand, especially if they find a way to deploy overseas all the armed forces that might resist the dictatorship.

Again, it can happen here, and if the police are federalized, it will happen here.

          • Awakened Saxon

I have no doubt that America can and will become communist (or something comparable), but you threw me with the reference towards the Brownshirts. They were anti-communist nationalists.

          • Lexonaut

The point is that they were the Party’s street enforcers.

          • Awakened Saxon

All right, and not to beat a dead horse here, but it is very trendy to use the National-Socialists as whipping boys (a trend started by the Left) when it is actually communists who are much more applicable to the situation.

          • anony

            Dictatorship is Dictatorship.

          • Awakened Saxon

First, that’s not true. One secured Germanic survival. The other waged war against it.

Second, if that’s your position (“dictatorship is dictatorship”), then why is there such a disproportionate focus on using the National-Socialist dictatorship as the archetypal example of evil? Why not use the other myriad examples? The answer to me is obvious. Have you figured it out yet?

          • anony

            ” One secured Germanic survival.”

            Really? Please explain.

My point is that any “dictatorship” is anathema to individual liberty.

          • belajadevotchka2

It is already happening here. It started a long time ago.
It is very telling if you binge watch the tv program “COPS”. Start with the first episodes that were filmed in the 80s and keep watching the episodes in chronological order. You can see the progressive militarization happening right in front of your face. it is truly frightening.

          • Lexonaut

Till now the militarization of the local police has been a response to the gradual but relentless breakdown of law and order in the USA. It accelerated decisively after the 1997 North Hollywood bank robbery shootout.

It is not the militarized local police who will come for you because, whether federalized or not, they will have been ordered to stand down just as they were in Ferguson, along with the National Guard, which had been activated and then sidelined to make sure that they wouldn’t get in DOJ’s way.

No, it will be DHS that comes for you — armed paramilitaries who are employed by, loyal to, and directly controlled by, the federal government. When I last looked we had more than 75 separate federal agencies with their own police, all authorized to use deadly force. These will be consolidated and placed under centralized command within DHS. Those military elements loyal to the government will also be deployed, the contingency plans for martial law being soft pedaled under the harmless sounding title “military assistance to civilian authorities”.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist, but when I watched on citizen journalist internet TV 30,000 communist-led flash mob shock troops marching down Broadway in NYC I realized that events are taking on a momentum of their own, that no conspiracy in the usual sense is required, and that the end game may not be far away at all.

      • Alden

You could be right What is frightening about this speech is not that he made it is that so many officials came to hear and applaud him

Sharpton would never never achieved his success were it not that many powerful people and institutions have been behind since he was old enough to vote

The Ford Carnegie and other great foundations and the federal state and local NYC governments have funded him

The Twanna Brawley would have ended the career of any ordinary race hustler but the highest level if the American elite is behind Sharptin

        • bilderbuster

Don’t forget he was/is an FBI operative.

      • bilderbuster

The Brown Shirts or SA were organized to defend against violent communist revolutionary gangs. If there were a US equivalent of the SA they would go toe to toe with the Black Panthers in an instant.

  • If Sharpton wants to do something positive, he should push for legislation construing the recording of cops in public to be implicit in the First Amendment.

The only way we knew about this case and how all the relevant cops lied on the paperwork was because someone was in the distance shooting video. The cops probably never knew that they were being recorded, otherwise they would have approached the person and “convinced” him or her to delete it, or otherwise send the person’s sail foam to sail foam heaven.

  • It’s been a long time coming, but anti-white liberals, blacks, etc. have a reasonably convincing case of homicide by cop. Expect all kinds of guilt tripping of whites as now fired Officer Slagle replaces hero Darren Wilson as white public enemy #1.

The worst part of it is going to be the candle light vigils nationwide, the US flag flown at half mast, Senators, Hillary, John Kerry, etc at the funeral delivering orations on racism. Universities will be erecting statues and other “art” relating to Mr. Scott. Schools will be named after him. He’s the new Rosa Parks, albeit, a dead one.

Then come the new civil rights initiatives. It’s almost too much to think about when you consider where this isolated shooting is going to lead.

    • Olorin

It may as you say become a Useful Martyr adding fuel to the fire of breathing a few more minutes’ life into the Grievance Industry, which is raging against the dying of its own light at this point in history.

Or it may be such an extremely off-spec incident that it becomes the touchstone for what this sort of thing (bad cop no donut) REALLY looks like…and can be noted in the future whenever the Usual Suspects start shrieking “out of control cop.”

This case is a gift to the libtards and blags as, prima facie, they appear to have a case for the first time. Now their smug, uncritical certitude will be insupportable. Although, I have to say that running from the police is a dumb thing to do.

  • E. Newton

The only way to stop this epidemic of young black men being murdered is to comprehensively change the nation’s police departments. I have a few modest proposals:

    1. Dismiss all non-black police officers at all levels give them some severance pay, along with an $1,100 voucher to learn a new trade
    2. Replace all those police officers with candidates that are qualified black
    3. All police departments will report directly into a newly established Department of Community Policing within the Department of Homeland Security
    4. A suitable black female should be appointed to run the national Department of Community Policing
    5. All police officers will adopt the same uniform, modeled after that of the new black panthers

The time has come for black only policing. Non-blacks have proven themselves too violent and unpredictable to function as police personnel.

    • Who Me?

Okay, so that was sarcasm, but I have a better idea that is deadly serious. Appoint BLACK policemen in majority black neighborhoods. Appoint WHITE policemen in majority white neighborhoods. Tell the two forces to never so much as think of crossing over to the other side–no matter what. Then if white policemen have to kill a criminal, chances are it will be a white criminal, or a black that should not have been on that side of town to start with. Same goes for the black cops–chances are it will be a black criminal, (almost 100% certain in that case). You see where this is going…segregation, Deep, deep segregation. Deeper than churches, or schools or any other kind, this is neighborhood self-segregation with a law enforcement cherry on top.

      • E. Newton

It’s interesting that among all places that I’ll write some sarcasm, Amren is the only place that people actually appreciate the point of it. Which is to ridicule the absurd ideas that so many people are simply accepting. Readers of Amren are quite a bit more intelligent than the rest of Disqus based comment sites.

I ” Demand ” a federal civil rights investigation of Al Sharptons anti Semitic incitement that resulted in the arson attack on Jewish owned Freddie’s Fashion mart that resulted in the death of seven people. For good measure and in the interest of social justice the same goes for Sharpton’s involvement in the Tawana Brawley hoax.

I love how they’re trying to use this case to effectively rehabilitate previous cases which were debunked and shown to be completely justified (Michael Brown, etc.)

It would be like if a legitimate rape on campus story came out now and the media and leftists tried to use that to resurrect Duke Lacrosse and UVA.

I think if i hear this “unarmed black” mantra one more time I am going to wind up in a mental institution.
Being unarmed does not mean that one is not dangerous. This is clear propaganda. The ignorant masses will, of course, read this phrase and believe that it is a crime for police or anybody else, for that matter, to fear for their lives and legally protect themselves or other people, if the black is not brandishing a weapon.

I don’t see the same media circus. Even if facts are on the side of the left, the race hustlers cried wolf too many times. Liberal media desperately fishes for white on black shootings, and desperately buries stories of black on white crime. A black male is still 39x more likely to attack a white male than the reverse. They have finally found something, but it doesn’t matter. Millions now know the truth. Just walk down the street of any US city, you know the truth. Here is a story that was buried by liberal media: “Gilbert Collar, a white, unarmed 18-year-old under the influence of drugs was shot and killed Oct. 6, 2012, by Officer Trevis Austin, who is black, in Mobile, Alabama. Despite public pressure for an indictment, a Mobile County grand jury refused to bring charges against Officer Austin, concluding that the officer acted in self-defense.” No public outrage, no riots,no lawsuits, no DOJ, nothing. Liberal media buried the story.
