Actor Who Played First Ever Black Bond Villain Says 007 Should Always Be Portrayed by a White Man

Corey Charlton, Daily Mail, April 9, 2015

The very first black James Bond villain, Yaphet Kotto, has said the legendary secret agent role should only ever be portrayed by a white actor and ‘political correctness be damned’.

Kotto, who starred as Dr Kananga in the 1973 Bond installment Live And Let Die, said the role was created by Ian Fleming for a white actor and should be portrayed on the big screen as such.

His comments come in response to months of speculation that black British actor Idris Elba is in the running to be named as Daniel Craig’s successor.

In an interview with Big Issue, Kotto said: ‘Political correctness be damned, we have to stay with what is literally correct.’

He said: ‘He was established as a white character, played by white actors. I don’t think it’s right for black actors or writers to do roles that whites have made historically white roles.’

Kotto argued that a black man could play 003 or 006, but could not be 007, and suggested new characters should be written for black heroes.

Last month veteran Bond actor Roger Moore was widely condemned for his claim that Elba, 42, could not be the next James Bond because he was not ‘English English’ enough.

Following the publication of the interview, Sir Roger faced strong criticism on Twitter over the statement.

He made the ‘English-English’ comments, even though former Bonds Sean Connery, Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan were Scottish, Welsh and Irish.

After being accused of ‘racism’, he claimed his comments were lost in translation during the interview with a French magazine.

Elba is seen as the leading contender to play Bond once Daniel Craig holsters his Walther PPK for the last time.

He was born in Hackney, raised in East Ham, schooled in Canning Town, started work in Dagenham and he supports Arsenal.

However, with speculation rampant he is being lined up to replace Craig, Elba himself has said he has ruled out taking the role.

Today The Sun reported him as saying: ‘It’s a rumour that’s really started to eat itself. If there was a chance of me getting Bond, it’s gone.’

He also responded to claims he was not ‘English’ enough for the role, stating he was ‘born and raised’ in England.

Following Live and Let Die, Kotto went on to take central roles in several successful Hollywood films, including Alien and Midnight Run.

A black “James Bond” is like a White “Shaft.” Ridiculous.

    • Germanic Depressive

Don’t worry, though blacks often struggle to make bond, whites are most assuredly getting the shaft.

  • D.B. Cooper

    Why not just remake Superfly?

    • Oil Can Harry

That movie was lame; the only good part was the Curtis Mayfield soundtrack.

  • A Freespeechzone

There you go, political correctness will only kill the James Bond franchise–to rewrite history to make minorities feel good about themselves.

    • Vito Powers

Remember Amy Pascal from the Sony email hacking scandal? It was in her emails that she (and it seems she alone) decided that the next James Bond would be a Negro. I’m sure that didn’t go over very well with her superiors. Why else would she have since been demoted?

      • Alden

        She is a Jew

    • John Smith

It’s getting kinda old, however, with no original Fleming material left.

  • I might stomach a black 007, but we can be sure he will be a jive-talking, superficial, self-centered (stereotypical) black simpleton.

    • Tim_in_Indiana

So in other words, you want your black 007 to be realistic?

      • I expect a jive-turkey black 007, but I would hope for a thought-provoking black 007.
In the immortal words of Lloyd Christmas – “So you’re sayin’ there’s a chance!”

          “My name is Mr Tibbs!”

Blacks can never be English no matter what their passports say. They are African and should return there.

    • Speedy Steve

They should have their IQ on their passports.

  • connorhus

I could tolerate a Black 007 more than I could a Black Heimdall. Which still means another movie I won’t be watching.

  • David Ashton

Well said, Mr Kotto. Who wants a white actor in “Porgy and Bess”? Or a Japanese playing the lead Zulu in “Zulu”. A disabled Odysseus? A homeo Romeo? Get’s get real, folks.

    • Cheri Rodriguez

David Carradine somehow got the lead role as Caine in “Kung Fu” (1972-1975) when it should’ve gone to Bruce Lee (who actually came up with the idea for the TV show). Still one of the biggest racial screw-ups in Hollywood.

      • Xerxes22

The character of Caine was half White and half Asian. So the part could have been played by a White or Asian actor. David Carradine was very good in the role.

        • JGTThrasher

I dunno. I found it ridiculous, even as a little kid, when they would refer to him as “Chinaman.”

      • FinnShane

The idea of flashy self centered Bruce Lee playing a quiet, peaceful, Buddhist monk is ridiculous too though. He wasn’t that good of an actor, and had an accent that sounded like an Asian Elmer Fudd.

    • Alden

Even as we type, a PHD thesis claiming Romeo and Mercurtio were lovers is being written

      • David Ashton

I can well believe it. The Merchant of Venice is being rewritten for the post-Holocaust audiences. We have had a black actor playing one of the Kings in the Histories, I forget which. We had a schoolteacher who refused to take her class to see Romeo and Juliet because it was “blatantly heterosexual” (exact quote). Even Dead White European Males are not safe.

  • Chip Carver

Not the first time Kotto has made remarks that don’t fall in line with PC dogma.

  • Tim_in_Indiana

Kotto, who starred as Dr Kananga in the 1973 Bond installment Live And Let Die, said the role was created by Ian Fleming for a white actor and should be portrayed on the big screen as such.

Only a black could get away these days with saying such a thing. Shocking!

    • Ron Cheaters

I think he’s one of the one’s who can see through the dogma.
      It is really patronizing.

      • InAFreeCountry

So there’s Thomas Sowell and Kotto, then.

      • Alden

He’s also way too old to be cast as Bond

  • TomIron361

Who cares what any black says about anything?

  • Truthseeker

It’s nice to know that some non-Whites view Whites as a distinct group of people with their own identity, and not generic humans who need to be spiced up by adopting more non-White characteristics.

    • bilderbuster

Both of them should get together for dinner sometime and discuss that.

I would love to see White Storm played by Scarlett Johansson

Since they are turning Thor into a woman, Green Lantern into a puftah, and

about over. A Black Captain America. Can’t he be Major Africa or Seargent
      Zimbabwe instead?

  • libertarian1234

If the white weenie fools want a black 007, let them have it.
Then when it’s a box office flop they can scream that we’re all racists for not wanting to see the movie. I don’t mind.
If they could get their mini-minds off racism and onto something constructive they might not be so miserable.
And they had better get off their childish mantra of multiracialism expecting to create a multi-colored world, because the process is eventually going to ignite powder kegs throughout the West. And the resulting paybacks could well find nothing for them to do but hang around.

  • Sissy White

Wrong again Daily Mail, the first black villains, were 2 black thugs in Dr. No, the first “British” James Bond movie, who in the opening scenes, tortured and killed an elderly British couple. (The first James Bond movie, I believe was played by American actor Barry Sullivan/Casino Royal, a relatively low budget black and white movie.) I suggest a mexican/north korean James Bond, who defeats British neo-colonialism!

    • John Smith

      Perhaps they mean main antagonist/villain?

  • Cindy

Ian Fleming is spinning in his grave.

    • Reynardine

This is what they mean by “sustainable energy.” We destroy the works of great white men and use their rotational energy to power the globe!

  • Michael Whalen

Hey, everybody! If you want to see the nearest thing to a black James Bond, go to Youtube, and look up the trailer for Dolemite, starring Rudy Ray Moore. Warning, language alert! Lots of Swahili!

    • Deacon Blue

I remember Dolemite! Dude, there are Black action heroes. Remember, Shaft?
Had the coolest theme song ever in TV history!

      • Michael Whalen

        Shaft was a bad mothershutyourmouth!

  • listenupbub

Last week, I went to see Les Miz on broadway. The child Cosette was a black girl, and the teen Cosette was a blonde white. The child Eponine was a white girl, but the teen Eponine was a black girl. Presumably, both of them changed races as they got older. If you do not already know the story, you would have no idea what the eff is going on in the broadway play.

Oh yeah, and the leader of the young revolutionaries was also black.

It has gotten to a point where they do not even need affirmative action policies. They all implicitly believe in affirmative action and will put non-whites in the whitest of plays. It is slightly offensive to me that blacks really think they belong in a European play. They would be mad as heck if a non-black played Simba or Mufasa in Lion King.

    • Ron Cheaters

      Yet they’d never play 24601.

      • listenupbub

        Why not?

        • Ron Cheaters

It wouldn’t be bread he was stealing.. Plus the whole idea of perpetuating blacks in prison.

          • listenupbub

Agreed, It would change the message of the play completely.

It would also probably tick the audiences off. Not many people are that progressive.

A black Jean Valjean would be an oxymoron. It would be absolutely ridiculous. Everybody knows that black people do not reform themselves after being shown grace by good and religious white people, as Jean Valjean did. If anything, grace motivates blacks to be more lazy and exploitative. This is true across the world, whether a black is in Africa, America, or Europe.

          • Ron Cheaters

A black stealing bread to feed his family?? We would laugh, but Most would gobble that up.

          • listenupbub

Back when I was not a race realist, I would get leftover bread from Panera and try to hand it out to homeless blacks near my college, hoping to do good and serve the Lord by serving “the least of these.” They would refuse my help, saying “ain’t nuffin I kin do wit dat, mayne. Any money?”

Turns out, their physical needs find a way to get taken care of. They just loiter around, hoping to get some money from white college kids for drugs or booze.

          • Samuel Hathaway

Well done, thou good and faithful servant.

You did your part. God noticed. The ungrateful recipients rejected your overtures of good will.

Notice how when Jesus said, I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was sick and you visited me…. ” Nothing in that section in Matthew said anything about giving $$$, although I’m sure that would be okay, too, but only to those who are trustworthy, not a group of blacks sizing up their next robbery victim.

          • David Ashton

Being pedantic, I think that section in Matthew is NOT a command to feed and clothe the world, but a threat of damnation for those who ill-treat even the least of the Christians. In fact, there is not much id anything in the gospels at all about literally solving the poverty problem or making people financially better off. Despite the TV “religion” racketeers who ask viewers to send in their “seeds” of $XXX to reap a “harvest” in the shape of an unexpected windfall.

Yes, you know who I mean, “Dr” Murdock and the Cerullos.

          • Samuel Hathaway

You’re absolutely right… the “prosperity gospel” and “seed money” and all the whooping and hollering and jumping up and down is all a scam.

          • David Ashton

It would be illegal if based inside Britain. The fate of Ananias and Sapphira is too good for these grimacing simoniacs.

    • Susannah

Good grief, how ridiculous. Casting the historically incorrect race or changing the race of a character within the same production are patently absurd. It sure does wonders for the suspension of disbelief .

    • David Ashton

This is soooo ridiculous. The film was good, but a stage version in the theater of my Norfolk town was nearly as good. With all due respect, a black face in the cast would have had us in fits.

  • A black Bond makes as much sense as a black Rhett Butler and a black Scarlett O’Hara.

    • Susannah

But they would cast this kind of dysfunctional combo before they would ever cast a White in the role of a traditionally black character.

    • Samuel Hathaway

…or a white Mammy in Gone With the Wind… or a white Prissy, “I dun no nuthin’ bout birthin’ no babies.” Ridiculous. Mammy did a great job in GWTW….she was rarely ever seen sitting in the movie and was always busy doing something constructive. But again, we are talking about a Hollywood movie, albeit a good one.

  • Frank_DeScushin

“Roger Moore was widely condemned for his claim that Elba, 42, could not be the next James Bond because he was not ‘English English’ enough.”

Yep, and Yaphet Kotto will not receive a scintilla of the criticism that Moore received because Kotto is black. Incidents like this unmask the “anti-racists” for the frauds they are. If they truly believed Moore’s message was racist, then they should attack whoever utters that message with equal condemnation. The messenger, not the message, means everything to these people, though. They attack Moore and not Kotto because they’re not actually anti-racist, they’re anti-white.

    • InAFreeCountry

“The messenger, not the message, means everything to these people, though.” How true, cuts to the heart of the matter. White messengers mean nothing, that’s our White Privilege.

  • JohnEngelman

It will be interesting to see how a black Bond does at the box office.

There were no big stars in that flop and that is where most of the budget goes, for salaries. So their loses were a bit less. They usually hedge their bets when they make a film like that.

      no it won’t

    • Samuel Hathaway

We’re not sticking around to find out. But if you go to the movies, we’re all sitting right here with bated breath for you to fill us in on the news how well the black Bond did at the box office…. have fun!

Let’s pretend this is science fiction and not a spy novel. At present rate, there will come a day in England where every James Bond is portrayed as a black man and no one will have a memory of anything else.

    • bilderbuster

      I doubt it.
Selma can’t even keep a movie theater open let alone produce a movie.

  • Deacon Blue

Yeah, but Idris Elbow was just so believable and credible as a Norse God in
the Thor movies. He’s amazingly believable as Heimdall, don’t you think?
Because when I think of Norse Gods, a big Black fellow with a tarantula on his
head for hair comes right to my mind. Maybe, they should have cast Loki with
a Black dude? Blacks like magic, are quite amenable to the shuck and drive,
and don’t fit in well with wonderful White utopias like say…Asgard. Could you
even imagine what would happen if diversity came to Asgard? LOL!

  • InAFreeCountry

The problem with black actors taking historically white roles is the resentment whites feel. They probably dig that a lot.

    • bilderbuster

That’s why those movies get made these days.

      • bv

        They almost never make money.

        • bilderbuster

Sometimes the money isn’t their only motivation and is less important than the message and believe you me the message is always there.

    • Samuel Hathaway

Blacks typically operate out of spite, packaged as goodwill, fairness and equality. Sadly, whites follow the scam all too often.

  • bilderbuster

How about a Black cast for Fiddler on da Roof?

  • bilderbuster

Patrick Stewart should star in the movie “Kennewick Man”.

  • Lion’s Mane

Good for him! Not many Blacks have as much self-respect as he. It’s just as absurd as having a Black ‘Sherlock Holmes’ — which I’m sure they’ll eventually get around to. No one is stopping the movie industry from creating roles for Blacks. It’s when one race pretends to be the other that a mockery — a.k.a. a denial — of race is being made.

  • Rhialto

This is just one more example of the Liberals replacing Western civilization with non-Western Multiculturalism. It’s been going on for many decades. A perfect example is MLK holiday replacing the holidays for Washington and Lincoln.

Cultural replacement of this type has occurred often, and examples are found in ancient Egyptian and Biblical history.

  • belajadevotchka2

Homicide Life on the Streets one of my all time favourite television programs.
I actually really liked Yaphet Kotto in the role of Lieutenant Al Giaradello as far as his acting and personality but I just really thought he was waaay too full black in appearance to portray a mulatto. He’s right on about a black James Bond.
Ain’t nobody got time fo dat.

I don’t seriously believe the next Bond will be black. Film making is all about profit. Skyfall was a big hit around the world, can’t imagine too many Indians or Chinese accepting a black Bond. It’s all about the money in the end. I certainly wouldn’t watch it.

Movies with blacks in starring roles don’t do well in Asia, and that’s where Hollywood wants to make big inroads.

      • 李冠毅

“Movies with Blacks in starring roles don’t do well in Asia”

Unfortunately for you guys, that’s not true. When the Thor movies came out, many of my schoolmates were going on and on about the films. The fact that Heimdall was played by a Black didn’t seem to receive special attention. But then again, almost all Hollywood movies nowadays seem to have one or more Black main characters. I guess many of us have become desensitized to that and simply don’t notice anymore.

        • John Smith

Maybe acceptable in an ensemble cast, but I don’t believe casts dominated by blacks do well comparatively. I can’t see “Twelve Years a Slave” or “The Color Purple” being well-received in China, though that’s also the subject matter as well.

That’s what I just said, although I didn’t elaborate that he was a black-Itslian mulatto. I guess I was just vague maybe because I just assumed everyone would know the role on HLOTS that Kotto played. I will give him credit, he is a good actor when he is asdigned roles of which his appearance is believable. If he had a bag on his head, he would have been perfect as “Gee” but he didn’t so he wasn’t. He was perfect as Idi Amin. Yes, Giancarlo Esposito can play the perfect mulatto or quadroon. But appearance aside, I did like Kotto’s acting in HLOTS. One of the very few blacks I can stomach watching onscreen. Morgan Freeman makes me throw up a little in my mouth FWIW!
