‘Rooney Rule’: Football Has Nothing to Lose, Says Dan Rooney

Richard Conway, BBC, October 3, 2014

A key architect of the NFL’s ‘Rooney Rule’ believes British football “has nothing to lose” by adopting a similar regulation.

The rule requires teams to interview at least one black or minority ethnic candidate for a head coach vacancy.

There are only two black managers in the Premier League and Football League.

Dan Rooney, 82, told BBC Radio 5 live: “I would tell British clubs that if they would look at this openly they will find this is a positive thing.”

Rooney, owner of Pittsburgh Steelers and chairman of the NFL’s Workplace Diversity Committee, which proposed the regulation in 2002, says it would open doors for clubs when looking at additional candidates for a job.

“The plus side of this is you’re increasing your list of people to look at and it would really work. I couldn’t recommend it enough for the teams in Britain,” he said.

“It may take a little bit of work. But it would be a plus to the teams, to the league itself. When you think about it they have nothing to lose.”

His comments come after the head of the players’ union, Gordon Taylor, told BBC Sport last week there was a “hidden resistance” from English clubs to hiring black managers.

Keith Curle, at Carlisle, and Huddersfield’s Chris Powell are the only two black managers within the 92 Premier League and Football League clubs.

Those who support English clubs adopting the ‘Rooney Rule’ say the fact that 25% of players are black or minority ethnic means there should be greater representation at management and senior coaching level.

Rooney believes clubs and leagues now need to show leadership over the issue.

“It’s not going to force teams to hire anybody. That’s their decision and they have to do a good job,” he added.

In a statement, the Premier League said: “The situation that brought about the introduction of the ‘Rooney Rule’ in the NFL is markedly different to football. But our ultimate goal is the same.

“What we want to achieve, by working with the FA, Football League, managers and coaches, is more and better coaches coming through the English system who can progress to the highest levels of the game on merit and regardless of race, ethnicity, gender or background.”

Following a threat of legal action from an organisation of activists, the NFL created the Workplace Diversity Committee.

That committee proposed the rule, with Rooney saying that at the time just 6% of head coaches in the NFL were black–by 2006 that number had increased to 22%.

Cyrus Mehri–one of the lawyers who helped devise and introduce the Rooney Rule in the NFL–has called on UK Prime Minister David Cameron to hold a conference with club owners.

“I don’t think we need legislation as much as we need leadership. There’s been a failure of leadership throughout the game in the UK,” said Mehri.

“I’m calling right now for people of good will to call on the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom to hold a conference where he brings in the top stakeholders.”

Former Birmingham and Derby defender Michael Johnson made more than 550 Premier League and Football League appearances in an 18-year playing career.

But he told BBC Radio 5 live that since retiring in 2009, and despite having all the necessary qualifications, he had found it impossible to get a job in management.

“I’m a pro license qualified coach,” he said. “I’ve gone through a governance course. I’m on the LMA diploma in football management. I can’t get any more qualified.

“But I’ve been out of football work in a full-time capacity for three years.

“I’ve sent over 30 CV’s of and got two interviews. For me, there’s something wrong there.”

“The Rooney Rule” – With 90% of all players being non White how dare we allow White people to be coaches? Especially when we all know that White people should be restricted to the sole role of being paying fans, and that’s it! Anything else would be racist, right?

Whites are the emerging ethnic minority in every Western country.

Still waiting for these people to wake up to reality…

    • baldridge999

Yeah, we’re becoming a minority in our own countries. Meanwhile Africa stays black and Asia stays Asian.

“British football ‘has nothing to lose…’”

    Really? How about civilization?

    • TruthBeTold

Of course, what he’s saying is a lie to trick people into adopting it.

After all, according to Rooney, ‘you have nothing to lose’.

On the contrary, British football has everything to lose.

A cousin of mine was former Athletics Director at an SEC school. When the football head coach position became vacant, he actually received a phone call from Jesse Jackson to “encourage” him to choose a black replacement. Fortunately, he chose a qualified candidate instead.

We got a call at the real estate department for the retailer I work for a few years back from either him or his son when we had a build out in Chicago. It seemed a bit heavy handed, but I couldn’t blame the guy for wanting to get his people jobs. Amazing that he’d reach out like that for something as picayune as a coaching position though, wow.

  • LHathaway

    Why isn’t my manager white?

  • IstvanIN

Why don’t these rear orificies keep their opinions to themselves? Not his game, not his country.

  • IstvanIN

Let me rephrase my comment: why don’t these race trading nit-wits keep their opinions to themselves. Not his country, not his game.

  • I’m for 100 percent of Negro Felon League coaches being black. The game would be sloppy, dumb, and unwatchable. Then maybe whites would get over their feetsball addiction and start working for our cause.

      GO BLUEGUMS!

      Compare…

      • LIBERTYSINCURSION

Wait, you mean to tell me that the bluish/purple gums and lips are actually normal? And here I was thinking that the Grape Ape In Chief’s lips were purple because the ties he wore were not really ties, but White racist disguised as ties which would slowly tighten around “Dear Leader’s” neck throughout the day. Robbing him of the required oxygen needed to keep the greatest brain the world has ever seen, making the greatest decisions any man has ever made, all while comically turning his lips a bluish/purple color.

Again, something that works and should be a good thing should happen organically. That people have to work to make it work shows that it doesn’t work.

“That people have to work to make it work shows that it doesn’t work.”

I was thinking the same thing in regard to the whole diversity push. People don’t want it but at the same time they don’t want anyone else to know that they know the whole diversity thing is just a white shakedown.

“A key architect of the NFL’s ‘Rooney Rule’ believes British football “has nothing to lose” by adopting a similar regulation.”

If you’re trying to enforce non-White-British “diversity” into British football, you’re already losing.

  • UncleSham

I imagine that this is the type of thing that makes East Asians shake their heads in disbelief at how stupid White people are. What sort of race sits around trying to come up with ideas on how to more quickly displace itself? How could evolution allow such beings to exist? We are freaks of nature.

    • John R

As I have said numerous times here, we must come and confront the truth-that this is a pathology within our own race. Yes, some may blame “The Jews” or any other sinister group, but this pathology is even stronger in White countries with very few Jews. No, it runs deeper than that. It is the defect of altruism that afflicts Whites of Northern European descent. The Left has said for years that “We must confront our own racism”; I say the exact opposite. It is our own sick altruism that we must confront.

  • Paleoconn

If black coaching candidates were so hot, we wouldn’t need some dumb rule forcing teams to interview them.

    • John R

THANK YOU! Strange how even DECADES AGO, colleges and professional teams, even before the end of legal segregation, had no trouble realizing the superiority of the Negro in sports like basketball, but now, in 2014, we need to be told that blacks are really good for coaching jobs because we are so “racist.”

    • watling

Indeed. Premier League football is big business where the difference between success and failure is many millions of pounds. If a top black coach were available he would be snapped up, just like any successful business would snap up a top class black worker. Business is colour blind, which is why football clubs will quite happily pack their teams with black players if they’re the best available.

So why would a team not want a black coach, if he were good enough?

The simple fact is that blacks make poor coaches, but anybody in football who said that would be out of a job the same day.

This past summer during the World Cup, I had a hard to trying to figure out which team was from Europe and the others from the African continent. Pretty sad, really.

    • Though the German team only had oddball. That’s way better than what seemed to be the half black German team of four years ago.

      • Leon NJ

France always looks bad, but I think it was Switzerland that surprised me as well. Oh well…

    • watling

A few seasons ago Wigan Athletic – who were then in England’s Premier League – regularly fielded teams where at least 9 of the 11 players were black.

  • baldridge999

Let’s see. This Obama lover and anti-white scumbag Rooney thinks that if 25% of players are black, then 25% of coaches should be black. But if, say, only 10% of players were black, Rooney would be for recruiting more black players! This guy sees only one thing: get rid of as many whites as possible.

Diversity is just a code word for white genocide.

  • Augustus3709

I hate to be “that guy” (no I don’t), but Mr. Rooney did not make the Rooney rule. It was named after him, but in reality written by the lawyer Cyrus Mehri.

    Picture included.

    • Christorchaos

In March 2003, the Detroit City Council passed a testimonial resolution honoring Mr. Mehri and wishing him “continued success in changing the fabric of America. “

And the Detroit city Council know something about changing the fabric of America: from bricks to rubble.

Also .. Why do Blacks have to have 18 last names? I see from Wikipedia that Melissa Harris-Perry was formally Melissa Victoria Harris-Lacewell. It is like “two last names, never leave home without it”. I also think that it is Blacks attempt to differentiate themselves from what they derogatorily call “street ens”.

      • IstvanIN

Since they generally have their children out of wed lock when they do get married they have to keep both their “maiden” names and their husband’s name to maintain a link to their chillins.

    • Looks to have come straight from his son’s Barmitzvah…… but surely not! This would start to look a little bit too coincidental!

    • Looks like I might have jumped the gun on his facial features and agendas…some sites suggest he is Iranian ‘Muslim’…. but on first impression it does seem to be ‘one-of-the-people-we-are-not-supposed-to-point-out-the-disproportionate-meddling-of’…….

  • John R

“I think the black coaches DO deserve extra consideration. After all, it would make up for generations of slavery, segregation, lynching and Jim Crow Laws….what? This is in the UK? Uhhh, oh….ummm…I’ll think up another excuse. Check back later.”
    Typical liberal

  • John R

Never will. Liberals, in ANY country will never admit that Whites are superior in anything. Don’t be so naïve.

  • So, just like all the other aspects of British life and companies, when it really gets down to it, Whites have to pretty much remove themselves from their jobs, their roles, their country.

This is apparently because there is still this “race problem” – in a country that was once 100% (and still 99.8% white in 1951)…..and that race problem is that there are “too many whites” in these jobs.

The problem is never that there are too many Blacks in Britain. The problem is never that this “race blind” multiculturalism fails to “not see the colour” of managers in sport or elsewhere, considering we are “all the same”.

The problem is never that it seems we need to have to have “Black TV executives”, Black “football coaches”, Black “teachers” to be there for ethnocentric “Black youth” to feel “inspired by” or “at home with” because they “look like they do”.

There are too many Jewish people in the Federal Reserve, both past and present……so how about the media and the state apparatus rolling with that one?

Surely there is a serious diversity problem there?…… After all, to paraphrase Mr Rooney…..”what could possibly go wrong?”……
