HIV Pandemic Was Created by ‘Perfect Storm’ of Factors, Study Reveals

Steve Connor, Independent, October 2, 2014

A “perfect storm” of factors that came together in colonial Africa early last century led to the spread of Aids in the human population and eventually a full-blown pandemic infecting more than 75 million people worldwide, a study has found.

A genetic analysis of thousands of individual viruses has confirmed beyond reasonable doubt that HIV first emerged in Kinshasa, the capital of the Belgian Congo, in about 1920 from where it spread via the colonial railway network to other parts of central Africa.

Scientists believe the findings have finally nailed the origin of the Aids pandemic to a single source, a colonial-era city then called Leopoldville which had become the biggest urban centre in Central Africa and a bustling focus for trade, including a market in wild “bush meat” captured from the nearby forests.

The study, based on analysing the subtle genetic differences between various subtypes of HIV, found the human virus had evolved from a simian virus infecting chimps which were hunted for food by people who had probably carried HIV with them into Kinshasa.

Rapid social changes, such as an increase in commercial sex workers and the re-use of dirty syringes, aided the transmission of the virus which was also carried to distant parts of the Congo by the millions of passengers who used the newly-built railway network, the scientists said.

“For the first time we have analysed all the available evidence using the latest phylogeographic techniques, which enable us to statistically estimate where a virus comes from,” said Professor Oliver Pybus of Oxford University, a senior author of the study published in the journal Science.

“This means we can say with a high degree of certainty where and when the HIV pandemic originated. It seems a combination of factors in Kinshasa in the early 20 Century created a ‘perfect storm’ for the emergence of HIV, leading to a generalised epidemic with unstoppable momentum that unrolled across sub-Saharan Africa,” Professor Pybus said.

Previous research had suggested that HIV was first transmitted from chimps to humans and that the pandemic probably originated in central Africa in the first half of the last century. However, the latest research provides the strongest case for it emerging at a definite time and place–namely Kinshasa in 1920.

“We have managed to integrate spatial information to see where the virus emerged and how it spread to become a full-blown pandemic. Kinshasa at that time was growing fast, it was the biggest city in central Africa at that time and was very well connected to the rest of the Congo,” said Nuno Faria of Oxford, another member of the team.

“Data from colonial archives tells us that by the end of the 1940s over one million people were travelling through Kinshasa on the railways each year. Our genetic data tells us that HIV very quickly spread across the Democratic Republic of Congo, a country the size of Western Europe,” Dr Faria said.

Further social changes brought about as a result of independence in 1960 helped the virus to “break out” from small groups of infected people into the wider population, including immigrant workers from Haiti who then carried their infection back home from where it would eventually be transmitted to visitors from the US.

“Our research suggests that following the original animal-to-human transmission of the virus, probably through the hunting or handling of bush meat, there was only a small window during the Belgian colonial era for this particular strain of HIV to emerge and spread into a pandemic,” Professor Pybus said.

“By the 1960s, transport systems such as the railways that enabled the virus to spread vast distances were less active, but by that time the seeds of the pandemic were already sown across Africa and beyond,” he said.

Previous studies have suggested that the initial transmission of HIV from chimps to humans probably occurred in the south-east part of Cameroon not far from the border with the Belgian Congo, Dr Faria said.

  • This should put to rest a theory that is fashionable among some of us that HIV/AIDS was synthesized in a lab for the purpose of population control.

    • proud white

It is more risky to sleep with a black because much higher chance they are infected with HIV/AIDS. If a white girl goes black I prefer she stay black and keep the disease there, not bring it back to us whites

      • There bare other similar diseases, like HTLV, which cause leukemia in humans in Japan. The Portuguese appear to have introduced it from Africa to Japan in the 16th century.

        • Shadow

“Blacks are also more likely to have STDs which create open sores on the genitals…”

A fact that White women should keep in mind whenever they foolishly think about becoming involved with black men.

      • It is unfortunate state of affairs that some old British women, sometimes grandmothers, are out being “sex tourists” with blacks when on “holiday” because the blacks are desperate for money and passports and they, the women long for the attention and what was called by one British newspaper (I’m trying not to be sick here) “the black bamboo”.

These old tarts fool themselves they are attractive and have emotional “connections” with these parasites – and are often either fleeced out of all their money or dumped when these parasites make it to Britain with their newly acquired passports.

Furthermore, there has reportedly been a rapid rise here in white older couples getting HIV…..no doubt some of these nasty women who are coming back from their “girly holiday” and infecting their sucker husbands whilst they are at it.

I generally laugh at the women who end up penniless from their “toy boys” or chucked out on the street, but the spreading of AIDS to our own race like this is no laughing matter.

I read a few weeks ago that the Ebola virus was likely to have come from bush meat like bats or monkeys, despite it being known that they can pass on such things to humans. But of course, that warning assumes that Blacks care about the consequences and risks of their actions….and there lay the problem.

The source of the Ebola outbreak seems to have gone quiet in recent weeks. I can only guess that it is not conducive to the “messages” we are supposed to be hearing, and has thus been shelved ….or “quarantined”

Nothing good comes out of Africa.

    • All the scientists were probably white, so its a C-O-N-spiracy to hide the truth from “The Black Man!”

    • benvad

Facts don’t factor in African minds, isn’t that self evident by now?

      • Whitetrashgang

Facts are racist , anyone who wears white pants is a suspect.

    • Michael Samuel

I hope it also puts to rest the “theory” that Africans had sex with monkeys and got HIV, by the way it was Jewish KGB propaganda officer that created that lie in 1983 this “story” was placed in African newspapers via the Soviet press agency TASS.

      • John R

Blacks having sex with monkeys. Blacks having sex with blacks. What’s the difference?

      • A monkey would scratch and bite the living daylights out of someone who wanted sex with it. It was uncooked meat that did it.

        • Uncle Bob

It’s more likely that they were butchering an infected chimp and cut themselves. I wonder if they cut off the human looking hands from the ape/monkey arms they like to munch on? Or does it give them some weird cannibalistic enjoyment to eat what looks (and likely tastes) like roasted human arms?

        • thomasdosborneii

I’m so glad somebody else understands this; I have been saying this for years! Anyway, monkeys and apes have an estrus cycle, so neither males nor females are interested in sex unless the female is in heat (with all the attendant signs and signals) and a human being just has no place in that particular picture.

          • Human males are also hung too big for sex with other primates, so even a female chimp “at the right time” would quickly become infuriated. The average gorilla has a three-incher, which is half of what a typical guy has.

        • Jack Burton

That’s really laughable. Even highly trained monkeys and chimp are often unpredictably violent and when monkeys and chimps fight, the first thing they do is bite off extremities, like the nose and fingers. That would be a really stupid thing to attempt.

        • Malgus

          Mr. Scott,

Respect to you, but there is this thought: what makes anyone think that the monkey actually had to be… erm… alive.. for this to take place?

Kill the monkey and… well, I can deal with what comes next, but will refrain from being too graphic out of respect for our other readers…

Given the depravity of our own blacks – and they’re supposed to be the cream of the crop for intelligence – is it beyond the possible for a sub Saharan black to do this?

I suppose that the argument could be made that the instant you killed the monkey, it became bush meat… but just the phrase “bush meat” carries a connotation with it – that of accidental transmission due to poor sanitation. I don’t believe it was that unintentional/accidental… I think the alternative – that of… intentional relations… is what caused it to enter the human population…

          • They sure liked hurting Christoper Newsome and Channon Christian, so why not?

          • Malgus

Well played… and very much on point.

        • John Smith

I’m not sure a bonobo would. Moreover, it needn’t have been alive. If some drunken African got bitten, then there you go – source of infection.

  • MekongDelta69

    I saw this yesterday.

But, but, but – Calypso Louie said it was the White man who created Ebonics… I mean, Ebola in the lab to kill all blacks.

    • Oil Can Harry

And it was your avatar Rev. Jeremiah Wright who claimed HIV was created by the CIA.

Since the CIA wasn’t formed until 1947 those sneaky spies must have traveled in a time machine back to 1920 to start the virus.

      • Julius Caesar

My uncle, when he was in jail back in the 80s, said Jeremiah Wright would come in every week and preach to the blacks, during a sermon, about impregnating white women when they got out of jail, so as to ensure the eventual death of the white race. Those were his very words. He offered all of the black inmates connections once they were out so they could get back on there feet and be set up with a few whites ASAP.

  • Adolf Verloc

“By the 1960s, transport systems such as the railways that enabled the virus to spread vast distances were less active.” In other words, they had fallen apart after independence. A good thing too – otherwise the damned stuff would have spread even faster.

    • Michael Samuel

The locals NEVER asked for railways or demanded them, the Belgians were naked ruthless exploiters of the Congo killing 13 million Africans in 20 years so much for the “benefits” of white “civilization” and rule.

      • Whitetrashgang

Yeah going from the stoneage to a first world civilization just isn’t what it use to be.You know like being worth a couple million per person, per year.

      • John R

And if the Belgians hadn’t killed that many African blacks, think of how many there would be today! We should be grateful.

      • MBlanc46

Yeah, we almost certainly would have been better off if we’d stayed the hell of out Africa.

        • Michael Samuel

It was called the “white man’s burden” I see many ppl here still have some form of that fever, another sickness was “manifest destiny” is there a cure?

          • I dislike the term “Manifest Destiny” and prefer “Lebensraum”. I’m not going to apologize for it, either.

      • The locals didn’t know what railways were in order to be able to demand them or reject them.

      • KenelmDigby

The Belgians wiped out cannibalism in Congo, which was previously practised on a massive scale. Whatever else they did or did not do, they managed to stop the raising of people as just another form of live stock and butcher’s meat. But I suppose you would still hate the Belgians regardless, since it was an authentic and time honored African tradition they curtailed.

        • tlk244182

He hates all Whites, not just Belgians.

        • Michael Samuel

Cite your Reliable sources for all this “cannibalism” in the Congo? (African tribes sometimes would tell Arab slavers stories of such things to scare them away from their territories) I am aware of tribes in Papua New Guinea eating body parts of of their dead ancestors as a form of “reverence”, Its quite possible the Belgians witnessed such scenes and did not understand these ceremonies.

          • KenelmDigby

            “Cannibalism and Human Sacrifice”
            Garry Hogg, 1966

          • John Smith

Sh-t, dumbass, they were openly killing and eating each other in Sierra Leone and Liberia not even ten years ago.

      • Uncle Bob

You are free to give up your computer, abandon white civilization and return to the lower world where you can live under the law of the jungle like your not-so-distant ancestors. But that wouldn’t be as comfortable and cozy as being a whining, complaining, leg-humper of White Western Civilization would it? Get back to your own society and leave us be you anti-white racist.

        • By using a computer, Mr. Samuel is committing a cultural imposition upon us. I think he should also refrain from using synthetic fabrics, using electricity or traveling in a motor vehicle. The native Bongonians in the Congo never asked for those nasty Belgian trains, after all.

It was also European whites and their ships that brought native American crops like maize, potatoes and peanuts to west Africa, so they should stop eating those forthwith.

  • MODERATOR: FYI the article above is repeated twice in the narrative.

    • Maybe that is because the information is really worth knowing and therefore should be read twice.

      Just kidding.

I will alert the website staff.

  • IstvanIN

HIV is a very delicate virus that does not survive long outside the body, thus not easily transmitted. The Africans did not catch HIV by eating bush meat, they raped chimps and monkeys.

    • Anglo

I don’t think they would have gotten HIV from well-cooked bush meat. Cooking should have destroyed the virus. Do they eat raw meat or undercooked? They could have gotten HIV from handling the raw meat and blood? It’s transmitted by blood, semen, vaginal secretions, or other bodily fluids. I can imagine a number of ways it could be transmitted, and it’s all grotesque to me.

      • They often just smoke the meat. The operative word in “rainforest” is “rain”, so very often the wood is too wet to burn properly.

      • GeneticsareDestiny

I imagine some Africans probably eat bush meat raw. Starting fires isn’t easy without lighters or matches (at least, I’ve never been able to do it). If an African man was hungry one night after spending all day hunting down bush meat, I could see him deciding to just eat it raw rather than going to the trouble of starting a campfire.

        • I prefer saltwater fish raw, but never anything else.

          • Anglo

I will not eat anything raw, but properly prepared sushi is okay, I guess, if one likes it.

        • Malgus

As I recall, the speed record for starting a fire without the aid of matches or a lighter is under 10 seconds, using a firebow and a drill.

I’ve started fires using a variety of means – fire piston and chaga, firebow and drill, flint steel and charcloth, etc. By yourself, if you’ve never practiced it, it can be difficult. Easiest way would be to spread out the effort – a very large fire bow with one man on either end – like a two man saw – and a third man stabilizing the drill in the middle. (Though carrying a round rock with a hole in the middle would pay dividends.. with a stick inserted though the hole, it acts as a flywheel and, coupled with a leather thong and another stick, can make a decent “powered” fire drill)…

All that said, every time I’ve seen Africans (I’ve been to Namibia exactly once) on TV or in person, they always build a fire. Always. From cooking their food, to keeping away dangerous animals, to keeping away the boogey man or evil spirits or even for just light, they build one.

I think the “handling uncooked bushmeat” excuse is just that – an excuse put forth by folks unwilling to say what everyone is thinking – that the disease was passed via the rape of an infected animal. I remember reading the memoirs of a nurse in Africa in the 1950’s, and she documented a disease that – though unnamed – was probably HIV/AIDS. She related that the locals revered this little monkey… some sort of “god” or whatever… it was considered good luck to have one as a pet in your hut. It was considered great magic to “have relations” with the monkey…

Soooo, raw meat? No play on words intended, but not so much…

          “Having relations” with monkeys? Probably.

    • Whitetrashgang

      Its called dating sir.

      • IstvanIN

Are you assuming the chimps were willing participants?

    • Jack Burton

You’re not thinking through the steps of meat preparation. You think it goes from a dead monkey to instantly cooked meat? HIV can be transmitted through blood. The butchering of a freshly killed monkey for bushmeat consumption could easily cause its blood to infect an open wound in the stupid black.

      • IstvanIN

While causal transmission here is virtually unheard of, I suppose, considering the African’s level of hygiene, that is a possibility.

      • That’s right, and scratches on the hunter’s bare skin caused by moving through the brush would probably be enough. Now and then I pick up scratches that I don’t later remember getting. I was originally trained to use some fairly heinous chemicals in a laboratory environment, and the name of the game there is to minimize risks. Butchering a monkey or ape is an appalling risk from an epidemiological standpoint, because any disease it might have is almost by definition something a human can catch.

        • Jack Burton

People touch their face more than they think they do as well. It could enter your mouth, through your nostrils or eyes, easily.

With Ebola, it’s still active days after the animal or human has died. Procedure for corpse disposal is similar to what the OCD serial killer from Dexter did, entire room encased in plastic and multiple layers wrapped around the body for safe disposal.

  • I gave this a quick read, but I saw nothing about the primary cause of the spread of AIDs, which is SODOMY. Men’s penises exploding inside the anuses of other men is the factor this PC article leaves out. I hope I’ve corrected the record sufficiently.

    • In Africa, where this disease originated and where it remains most endemic, the primary means of transmission is heterosexual activity. However, it’s true, the particular varieties of such are seldom discussed in the media.

      • Ike Eichenberg

In much of sS Africa, homosexual behavior is very taboo.

It is a scientific fact that female to male HIV transmission is much more difficult than male to female, or male to male.

Given the fact that female to male transmission is much more difficult, one would expect the majority of HIV cases to be among the receptive partner.

But the sub Saharan HIV demographics are not as divergent between men and women as one would expect considering the difficulty of M to F transmission.

Long way to get to the point, which is, even in Africa much of the spread of HIV is actually MSM, and bisexual (down low) behavior spreading the the disease to women.

The political agenda here does its best to pretend it is a hetero disease in Africa though it is not.

        • Venereal diseases like syphilis and herpes, which produce open sores would logically make female-to-male transmission of HIV much easier. If HIV’s major outbreak started in Kinshasa, this makes sense, because the city was full of prostitutes, and black truck drivers patronized them, spreading it up and down the roads as they traveled.

          • Ike Eichenberg

While that is correct it is a two way street.

The spread from male to female is also easier when the female has open sores. Hence we would still expect HIV to infect a much larger percentage of women than men, but that is not the case.

In the US, sub Saharan males have a significantly higher rate of homosexual and bisexual behavior than do Europeans.
I suspect the same is true in the original gene pool also.

If you contain the homosexual behavior, HIV would be far less prevalent even in Africa, but that fact does not fit the left/homosexual agenda.

No argument on the poor judgment ability of sub Saharans.

So here we go again, Ebola. Another black created cesspool to be “enjoyed” globally. Ebola also took a while for it to reach the current level. Blacks, the curse of this planet.

    • Anglo

My old Dad — rest his departed soul — had a funny way of saying things sometimes. He always said “Ni–ers were put here to destroy the world.” Seems he was right!

  • Whitetrashgang

Bush meat, sounds like George Bush trying to catch a frog for supper.

    • Anglo

      LOL!

  • John R

Blacks are ugly. We find them repulsive. Most people with diseases like smallpox and leprosy are also ugly to us. This is not really cruel. It is called natural selection. It is Nature’s way of trying to protect us. We should heed our natural instincts.

  • Paleoconn

If Africa produces so much disease now with barely 1 billion inhabitants, can you imagine the plague they will unleash when they reach 4 billion by AD 2100?

    • journey

Hopefully, the blacks will never that population level. Heaven forbid.

    • They won’t reach that population level. They can’t sustain their current population on their own.

      • GeneticsareDestiny

I don’t think they’ll get to four billion either, but I could see them making it to two billion before whites wake up and stop artificially propping their population levels up with foreign aid. And two billion Africans, with their natural hygiene habits, sex habits, and location in a tropical climate could generate some very nasty new diseases before the inevitable population crash happens.

    • tlk244182

The diseases will prevent them from over-populating. It’s a self-regulating mechanism.

      • Anglo

Yes, it should be except for stupid White liberals interfering with nature.

    • Unlike the others replying, I do think they will reach those kinds of figures – and I do not think there will be any barriers to how bad it will get, because they will just flood into Europe even more than they already are doing by the hundreds of thousands a year.

Can you imagine it when they are 2 Billion, 3 Billion, failing, diseased, criminality out of control, starving, no industry, no hopes, ever more desperate to leave their self inflicted circumstances?

At this rate, who is going to stop them? The EU? The British government? the UN, NATO, or America’s White-house? It is “camp of the saints” time I’m afraid. Africa will double or triple, the quadruple element may turn up to be in Europe.

      • KenelmDigby

        Agree with you 100%.
The political class that runs the EU and the USA will invite them all in. I state here in all truthfulness and honesty, after years of obsessive and careful study of the issue and the phenomenon, that the western political class values the lives and welfare of third world immigrants and would-be immigrants far, far higher than it does native, indigenous Europeans. This is no deliberate lie or exagerration intended to frighten or brow-beat you into supporting an anti-immigration, nationalist position, but fact gleaned from years and years of research and attention to detail, observation etc.
From this fact alone, and from the other concrete fact of demographics, you can be reasonably certain that White Europeans will more or less cease to exist sometime after the year 2100.
        Count on it.

        • Anglo

If that’s true, I’m glad I won’t be alive to see it.

  • Leon NJ

I wonder if it spread a little faster by Belgians sleeping with the black women over there?

Notice how the article places blame on…naturally…the evil colonialists for creating a transit system in the Congo!

Simply amazing. Whitey just can’t get it right.

Yuck yuck, bush meat. I want to retch.

    • Some bush meat might be OK if it was cooked properly, but as a dietary guide with unknown animals, I would have to refer to the Old Testament, even though I’m not religious. I’ve had alligator before, so I know reptiles are OK to eat. Crocs and gators live a long time, are predators, and prefer fresh water, thus their parasite load must be very high, so these must be cooked quite thoroughly. Bears can carry trichinosis parasites, so ditto for cooking bears (they are also tough and stringy). Armadillos carry leprosy, which makes them inedible to humans. Newts and salamanders are closely enough related to toxic fish that they are inedible. Any mushroom with gills or growing under an oak tree will kill you. The entire dandelion plant is edible, as are cat tail and chickweed roots. I’ve had bugs before, when we were cut off and surrounded, and while they are basically land-dwelling shrimp, one must also boil them like shrimp before eating.

Bats and monkeys are right out.

      • Malgus

Reminds me of JOTB down in Panama… 🙂

Lots of creepy crawlies to munch on… never had to eat a bug, though. Not intentionally, anyways… If you get hungry enough, you’ll eat everything from the squeak to the… well, you get the idea. Snake isn’t bad, though… sort of like a big tube sock full of meat.

        • Anglo

          None for me, thank you.

          • Malgus

I understand your aversion but if you get hungry enough, you’ll be asking me for seconds and the recipe…

Try going without food for 3 days. Skip 9 meals and try to keep up your normal activity level… by the end of those 3 days, you’ll be willing to eat frozen hot dogs from the package, I bet. 🙂

          • The last real meat had been a pig we shot. Experienced soldiers always kill stray pigs because they will attack wounded men. We sliced it up thin and rolled it in some flour we had found, before frying it. We had already eaten the dogs and cats in the area, so the pig was a lucky encounter. We had plenty of grass, too (the cow and not hippie version). I went down from 170 pounds to 135. Nobody broached the subject of cannibalism, though I certainly thought about it. If we had done that, I wouldn’t be writing here, as I was badly wounded, so I would have been one of the first on the menu.

          • Malgus

This was you? Harsh… Central America has two kinds of wild pigs – big and little – but I didn’t see any. Either they got hunted out or were educated to the point where they avoided us long before we saw them. Plenty of predators down that way, including a very cool black jaguar (saw one, once. And I’m not entirely sure who was following who..).

Heard some nitwit imported a Russian boar and crossed it with its American counterpart. Some BS about making them “more of a challenge to hunt”. The result is a half ton of ill tempered bad news with tusks like razor sharp railroad spikes. Extremely aggressive… will attack on sight. Fortunately, that’s down Tay-has way and not here… we got wild hogs, but nothing like that.

I know plenty of critters carry plenty of diseases, but if things are going to go the way I think they will, then we’re not going to have the luxury of being picky about food…

From what I know from real life and history, about half of everyone won’t make it past Year One. Half of those left won’t make it past Year Two. If you can make it past Year Two, then you got a good shot at making it in the long run… well, at least the odds are more in your favor anyways…

I’ve heard people in parts of Mexico, Central, and South America do eat Armadillos. I don’t care how well-cooked it was, the idea of eating Armadillo would be repugnant to me.

        • Armadillos are the only animals other than humans that can catch leprosy. Since leprosy is an Old World disease, it can not have originated with them, but it has been brought here, and some of them now have it. Raccoons and opossums should also be considered inedible due to rabies. Chagas would also be a worry with these two.

When white doctors tried to get them to use condoms, they reckoned that HIV was a hoax invented by whites to keep them from reproducing as quickly. They always ascribe the worst intentions to us, which can only be projection on their part.

U.S. AFRICOM wants several thousands more American troops on the continent. They refuse to cede Africa to Chinese expansion. This is just the beginning.

  • Boil them.

The CDC talking heads keep saying it will not mutate to airborne. Maybe not, but I just don’t believe everything the public health officials and the government is saying.

I don’t think we need to worry about Africa’s population explosion at this rate.
