US: Most New Immigrant Families Fail to Report

For nearly three months this summer, the Obama administration carefully avoided answering questions about what happened to tens of thousands of immigrant families caught illegally crossing the Mexican border and released into the United States with instructions to report back to immigration authorities.

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and others said they faced deportation. But it turns out that tens of thousands of those immigrants did not follow the government’s instructions to meet with federal immigration agents within 15 days. Instead, they have vanished into the interior of the U.S.

The Homeland Security Department privately acknowledged that about 70 percent of immigrant families failed to report as ordered. The disclosure came during a confidential meeting at its Washington headquarters with immigration advocates participating in a federal working group on detention and enforcement policies.

The Associated Press obtained an audio recording of Wednesday’s meeting and separately interviewed participants.

On the recording, the government did not specify the total number of families released into the U.S. since October. Since only a few hundred families have already been returned to their home countries and limited U.S. detention facilities can house only about 1,200 family members, the 70 percent figure suggests the government released roughly 41,000 members of immigrant families who subsequently failed to appear at federal immigration offices.

The official, who was not identified by name on the recording, also said final deportation had been ordered for at least 860 people traveling as families caught at the border since May but only 14 people had reported as ordered.


The AP reported in June that the administration would not say publicly how many immigrant families from Central America caught crossing into the U.S. it had released in recent months or how many of those subsequently reported back to the government after 15 days as directed. The AP noted that senior U.S. officials directly familiar with the issue, including at the Homeland Security Department and White House, had dodged the answer on at least seven occasions over two weeks, alternately saying that they did not know the figure or didn’t have it immediately at hand.

Homeland Security’s public affairs office during the same period did not answer roughly a dozen requests for the figures.

      Whatever percent did report, you can bet had something to gain by reporting. They may have been eligible for benefits, and they probably were assured that they wouldn’t be extradited as well. Of the illegal communities are well networked with each other and know exactly how to avoid the law.

      100% of the US government employees who’s job requires them to enforce the immigration laws were paid anyways and many got overtime.
      Employees rarely make policy decisions. This fish is rotting from the head downwards. That said, I think there should be ZERO Hispanics working in ICE or the Border Patrol. They absolutely cannot be trusted.

    The laws don’t apply when it comes to illegals, yet Veterans, Conservatives, White men and Christians are harrassed and targeted for lawfully exercising their rights.

    Illegals have more rights and make no mistake, when Obama illegally gives them citizenship, they will, at every level, demand and get preference.

      Follow the $$$. Conservatives, white men and Christians typically have higher incomes; hence, they are piggybanks to empty for untold billions of transfer payments to Democratic constituencies, like illegal aliens.

    I propose a new term that relieves them of any suspicion of wrongdoing: lost desert travelers. Voyaging valedictorians.

    If there’s any doubt in anyone’s mind that our Federal Government is anything but tyrannical, articles like this should change their mind. Illegals are allowed to waltz across a bridge into this country without a “by your leave” while citizens are harassed at airports by TSA government thugs. From the preamble to the Declaration of Independence; “We hold these truths to be self-evident,………That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government,” It’s getting to be that time again…..

    A better procedure: Focus all resources on the line that separates the U.S. and Mexico. It’s called “the border” for good reason. Catch as many of those crossing illegally as possible, give them water and an info pamphlet, bus them back across the border and drop them off. Done. Gone will be the money they paid the coyotes to get them across – too bad. Word of mouth in these various Central American countries would be that if you’re caught you get kicked out and lose everything you spent trying to thwart U.S. law – not that you’re allowed to stay, and all your needs are taken care of.

      You forgot to add that the Mexican government should get the bill for expenses we incur getting their illegals home. They’ll never pay, but it will sure upset them to be charged. They already say it’s unforgivable that anyone thinks we should secure our borders.

        What really gets me is how strict the immigration laws of Mexico are. The same country that floods us with millions of illegal immigrants will literally sentence you to a prison camp for years for sneaking into their country illegally.

But the US government isn’t really interested in implementing the procedures; the invaders know it; the government knows that the invaders know it.

  • There are numerous stories about the same kinds of thing happening here in Britain – where illegal immigrants are told to make their own way to the authorities to hand themselves in….. what a shocker it is when nobody turns up. But why should the authorities care?

    As for the U.S.A, it seems really weird. On the one hand, travellers from Europe are said to not be allowed entry if they have a minor drugs convictions or whatever, where people have turned up at the airport and been turned away without entry…..yet tends of thousands of blacks and browns are flocking into the nation and effectively being welcomed with open arms by the state, including murderers, rapists and drug dealers.

    One might start to wonder whether the leaders of both Britain and America have an agenda going on……..

The fact that they don’t respect our laws is a source of hostility, but our own “government” doesn’t respect the laws either.
