Why I Can’t Stand White Belly Dancers

Randa Jarrar, Salon, March 4, 2014

Google the term “belly dance” and the first images the search engine offers are of white women in flowing, diaphanous skirts, playing at brownness. How did this become acceptable?

The term “belly dance” itself is a Western one. In Arabic, this kind of dance is called Raqs Sharqi, or Eastern dance. Belly dance, as it is known and practiced in the West, has its roots in, and a long history of, white appropriation of Eastern dance. {snip}

Growing up in the Middle East, I saw women in my community do Raqs Sharqi at weddings and parties. {snip} At my wedding, I was my own dancer. I hired a band that specialized in Arabic music and danced with my family and friends, not all of whom were Arab.

One of the most awkward occurrences for me when I go out to an Arabic restaurant is the portion of the evening when the white belly dancer comes out. This usually happens on weekends, and I’ve learned to avoid those spaces then, but sometimes I forget. The last time I forgot, a white woman came out in Arab drag—because that’s what that is, when a person who’s not Arab wears genie pants and a bra and heavy eye makeup and Arabic jewelry, or jewelry that is meant to read as “Arabic” because it’s metallic and shiny and has squiggles of some kind—and began to belly-dance. She was not a terrible belly dancer. But she was incredibly thin and didn’t remind me, in any way, of Tahia Karioca or Hind Rostom or my absolute favorite Raqs Sharqi dancer, Fifi Abdo. {snip}

{snip}

The most disturbing thing is when these women take up Arabic performance names—Suzy McCue becomes Samirah Layali. This name and others like it make no sense in Arabic. This, in my estimation, completes the brownface Orientalist façade. A name. A crowning. A final consecration of all the wrongs that lead up to the naming.

Women I have confronted about this have said, “But I have been dancing for 15 years! This is something I have built a huge community on.” These women are more interested in their investment in belly dancing than in questioning and examining how their appropriation of the art causes others harm. To them, I can only say, I’m sure there are people who have been unwittingly racist for 15 years. It’s not too late. Find another form of self-expression. Make sure you’re not appropriating someone else’s.

When I have argued, online and in person, with white women belly dancers, they have assured me that they learned to dance from Arab women and brown women. This is supposed to make the transaction OK. Instead, I point out that all this means is that it is perfectly all right with these teachers that their financial well-being is based on self-exploitation. As a follow-up, white belly dancers then focus on the sisterly and community aspect of belly dance. They claim that the true exploiter of belly dancing is Hollywood, and the Egyptian film industry, which helped take belly dancing out of women’s homes and placed it directly under the male gaze. Here, the argument white belly dancers try to make ignores the long history of white women’s appropriation of Eastern dancing and becomes that this, the learning and performance of belly dance, is not about race and appropriation, but about gender and resisting the patriarchy and how all of us belly dancing together is a giant middle finger to men and their male gaze-y ways.

But, here’s the thing. Arab women are not vessels for white women to pour themselves and lose themselves in; we are not bangles or eyeliner or tiny bells on hips. We are human beings. This dance form is originally ours, and does not exist so that white women can have a better sense of community; can gain a deeper sense of sisterhood with each other; can reclaim their bodies; can celebrate their sexualities; can perform for the female gaze. Just because a white woman doesn’t profit from her performance doesn’t mean she’s not appropriating a culture. And, ultimately, the question is this: Why does a white woman’s sisterhood, her self-reclamation, her celebration, have to happen on Arab women’s backs?

    Hoo, boy…

Another important issue I never gave a moment’s thought to.

My ‘White Privilege’ does have its advantages…

    • Lagerstrom

Goddam it, This fellow is a horrific bore. You can have your silly ‘belly dancing.’

      • TheAntidote

        It’s a girl!

    • Erasmus

If white belly dancers are misappropriating someone else’s culture, what does she thinks of African-Americans living in anything but grass huts, wearing shoes and driving cars?

Time for her to demand Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton dump their Italian suits for loincloths and bones through their noses.

      • BonV.Vant

a black person using an iPhone… now THAT is misappropriation!

      • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Belly dancing is in the Arabic culture. It is also in the culture of Greece. The Arabic lands do have a real culture with excellent music and cuisine. It is the wild-eyed Muslim extremists that give these lands a bad name. These folks are adhering to a deranged, psychopathic ideology. Without the Muslim extremists, many of whom have Negroid admixture in their genes, the Arabic lands would be a lot like Greece.
If Ms. Jarrar wants to get her panties in a bunch about her Arabic culture being appropriated and bastardized by an alien race, She should focus on the African Muslim countries. They have twisted and contorted Islam, just as the American Negroes have done to our European Christian tradition, to something permitting Negro sociopathy. The African Muslims do not adhere to the sexual purity that is expected in traditional Arab Muslim culture. Rates and AIDS and VD are extremely low in Arab lands, but catastrophic in Muslim African countries, as they are everywhere Negroes are a large share of the population. Maybe Ms. Jarrar could rail against this, and against sociopathic Negroes adopting Arabic names. She knows darn well that Negroes are barbarians who have bastardized Arabic culture, and are rightfully detested by most Arabs.

        • Sick of it

It’s strange to read old Arabic writings re: blacks. You see abject hatred on the one hand and physical desire on the other.

  • David Ashton

    No more Black ballet dancers?

    • Eric Ruttencutter

Or classical musicians, or Shakespearean actors, or opera singers…

      • borogirl54

These are not ethnic roles like belly dancing is.

        • Eric Ruttencutter

Did European slaves ever become belly dancers?

          • AndrewInterrupted

            That was Tom Jefferson’s mistake.

          • Ruffslitch

That’s what my first thought was!

        • jambi19

ahh yes shakespearan actors are not ethnic roles….so I guess any Sanjay or Gupta can be a Capulet or Montague?

          • AndrewInterrupted

            Ruh-roh–looks like we’ve gotta race riot…

          • Mergatroyd

I hear Idris Elba is being cast as James Bond. Ian Fleming wrote that role as a “multicultural” part not specifically for an English character, don’t you know because everyone knows the White race and ONLY the White race is a social construct.

          • Aditya Vivek Barot

Brother, you’re a man after my heart. This, among other things, is what I tell these faggots.

Go back to your filthy huts. Don’t use vaccines and antibiotics. Discard trousers and shirts. No more TV, computers, iPhones and cars, airplanes, hydrocarbons.

F**k these swine. When will the white man take charge of this country and put these swine in their place!!!

        • silviosilver

“Ethnic roles,” rofl. The proper title for article was “Why I Can’t Stand Whites.” Much more honest.

        • Mergatroyd

Shakespeare created roles for blacks, browns and other non-whites? And, it’s OK for a black actor to play a Danish prince or an English king?
Wow, I didn’t know that! I’ve only been studying Shakespeare for 20 years and you’ve taught me that Shakespeare was ahead of his time by being all multicultural and supporting of diversity.

That canard I keep hearing must be right:

Anything Asian, Arabic, black, Hispanic, or any other thing that is non-White must be honored and respected as being for those people only, including their homelands.

Anything White if for EVERYONE, including White homelands.

Why don’t you just admit you’re an anti-White?

          • Robert

“Anti-racism is just a code word for anti-white” is just a code phrase created by idiotic, racist whites to justify their racial hate.

        • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Classical Music is European, and specifically European. Belly dancing is Mediterranean, popular in Greece as well as the Middle Eastern countries. To see a Blond Teutonic woman or Red Haired Celtic woman doing belly dancing would look stupid, I have to agree with Ms. Jarrar on this. To have an Olive Skinned Mediterranean woman belly dancing, though, fits the role, whether She is Greek or Middle Eastern. For her to rail against “Whites” in such a hateful way, instead of accurately and respectfully noting the oddity of Northern European females being belly dancers, is what makes her rant disgusting. She has roundly disrespected Greeks with this.

      • DaveMed

I can’t even picture those notions.

      • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Exactly. Blacks are not capable of the fine arts anyway. They need to stick to their screaming style of singing or their unpolished gospel garbage. As far as instrumental music, jazz suits them because they can get away with sloppy playing and no technique. Negroes are in over their head in Classical music, and need to stick to their inferior style of music instead of trying to compete with us.

        • Robert

Oh, douche or deutsche, stop with your silly shenanigans, you pale turd.

  • Eric Ruttencutter

Just leave belly dancing to fat Arab women and everyone will be happier.

    • slash345

      hahahahaha

      +1

    • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Plenty of Greek and Arabic belly dancers are quite beautiful, IMO, with their olive complexions and thick, black hair. Plenty of Mediterranean Women are easy on the eyes.

  • cecilhenry

I hate it when non-whites dress up as—- scientists, engineers, Olympians, gladiators, suits and ties, classical music, classical art, ……..Shakespeare,,, and on it goes…

    • Einsatzgrenadier

Whites have to accommodate themselves to non-white culture, but non-whites do not have to accommodate themselves to white culture. This is the road to white ethnic and national suicide.

    • rightrightright

      and Presidents.

  • Rhialto

I thought Arabs were Semitic Caucasians, and therefore White, at least as the Liberals classify human types. Also you’d think that Salon would praise this example of cultural diffusion between the Mideast and Western cultures. In any event it’s a fight among immigrants, Liberals and Feminists, so I’ll stay out of it.

    • Mergatroyd

Salon is on board with the Tim Wise, “White is a social construct narrative.”

This applies to Whites and ONLY Whites. Those who have no identity are easy to dehumanize; those who are dehumanized are easy to eliminate.

    • The acme of diplomacy can best be described as “let’s you and him fight”. If our enemies are getting stuck into each other, I have no problem with it at all.

    • guest12

Caucasian doesn’t mean white, both east asians and native americans are mongoloids, but no one groups in native americans with east asians.

      • Sick of it

Quite a few people have identified American Indians with East Asians (biologically speaking). Look at some old photographs if you’re having trouble seeing the connection. And yes, they probably have other ancestry as well, but Mongoloid is the main component.

    • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

They are Caucasians. That is scientific, not some Liberal thing. Arabic is a subgroup of Caucasian, like Teutonic or Slavic, but closely related to the Semites. They have a fiery, passionate temperament, but they can be reasoned with, provided they are not pumped up on Islamist extremist ideologies. Similar to Greeks and Italians in temperament.

  • borogirl54

I agree with the author. I hate to see white women dancing hula and Polynesian dances. It just does not look right.

    • Anglo

I think waltzes and ballet is are much more beautiful.

    • Mergatroyd

I feel the same way when I see Yo Yo Ma playing Mozart and other White Western Classical composers.

      It doesn’t look right.

I also don’t like seeing non-Whites using White-created technology (while they’re bashing us no less) like cell phones, iPods, computers, cars, jet travel, clean water, white-created medicine like antibiotics and vaccinations. We should have kept those things for our people and ONLY our people.

You’re right: People need to stick to those things their own people have created and leave it at that.

    • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

True. The worst spectacle, though, is a White, like that dirtbag Eminem, who raps like a Negro, with the whole Negro mindset of gratuitous violence, and seeking recreational sex at every turn. Wigger boys should all be deported to Africa with the Negroes that they worship.

  • Eric Ruttencutter

    A belly dancer named Hind…

  • JSS

It upsets me when nonwhites appropriate White people stuff. So lets agree to seperate.

  • So CAL Snowman

White belly dancers are guilty of cultural appropriation says the Arab in ENGLISH. I’m sure this Randa Jarrar was educated in western schools and dresses in western clothes and eats western food. Typical lefty logic, it’s ok for me to be a hypocrite but not for thee. Don’t worry Randa, many of us Whites find it very awkward and discouraging when we see non Whites trying to pretend that they are Western people.

    • DaveMed

“The most disturbing thing is when these women take up Arabic performance names—Suzy McCue becomes Samirah Layali.”
      ____________________________________________________

Not entirely dissimilar to my thoughts when I consider the anglicized names most Blacks have adopted.

    • Mergatroyd

…in ENGLISH using WHITE technology in a WHITE land.

Is this Arab the height of hypocrisy or what?

These anti-White should be thanking us for what our people have gifted to the world instead we get insolence, childish tantrums and impudence.

    • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Want to see Ms. Jarrar make a fool of herself while evidencing the superiority of European culture?? Invite her to a Polka festival, invite her to don a traditional Central European style dress, and hand her a buttonbox accordion!! She would probably not even be able to get a sound out of a buttonbox, let alone play a tune. Belly dancing is child’s play compared to learning this magical, but intensely difficult instrument. You hear some Mexicans giving this instrument a try, but you don’t hear them playing like good old Frankie Yankovic!!

  • TheCogitator

I like this standard. Blacks could not do anything other than be the stone-age savages they are. A people with no written language, and therefore no literature, no architecture, a people who never had the wheel. They could not longer pretend to be a civilized people.

  • D.B. Cooper

I found two people named Randa Jarrar. One is the author, and the other is a Pediatrician specializing in Clinical Neurophysiology. Guess which one wrote the article?

    • Jimmie the Greek

What !?!?! “Clinical Neurophysiology”? !?! Enough with the Arab women appropriating white culture, dressing up in white clothes and acting white!! Go back to your Arab ways, Miss “Clinical Neurophysiologist”. Cast out demonic possessions. Be an Arab witchdoctress. Only white people are “clinical physiologists”! Stop appropriating our culture and learnings!

    • BonV.Vant

it looks like someone has been at the kabob and babba ganoosh buffet WAY too long!

    • slash345

      Oh that one’s easy.

    • Max

Gawd, looks like more than the camel’s nose was under the tent.

    • gemjunior

She is a belly dancing beast. But it was never about belly dancing or dancing at all. She can’t stand the sight of a pretty white woman breathing.

      • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

She looks to be pure blooded Caucasian herself, a right attractive lass who would fit right in on the streets of Athens, Rome, or Barcelona. She would surely stand out amongst non-Caucasians. Negresses are hideous, as are Mestizoesses, who tend to resemble Jabba the Hut. This lady is an attractive, full-figured lady who looks to be of pure Arabic descent, definite eye candy for this man who likes his ladies with a little meat on their bones.

    • Mergatroyd

No wonder. Enough said. Jealous of White women because of her hideous appearance.

    • Erasmus

Nothing says “angry woman” better than 200 lbs of body fat.

    • captainc

both are arab palestinians? as both have the same name.

    • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

That is Ms. Jarrar on the left. A rather hot young lass!! Nothing wrong with a little meat on the bones!! Belly dancing is about looking and not touching, so I’d be glad to gaze at those nice breasts while She belly dances at my table at a nice Lebanese eatery!! Nothing wrong with looking, and that is the whole idea with a belly dancer. For a guy who likes a nice, full-figured lass, Ms. Jarrar is a very attractive young lady indeed. Nice breasts, beautiful hair, and a very cute face and nice smile. She needs to quit railing against Whites, because She is most definitely pure blooded Caucasian, and would fit right in in Greece or Southern Italy.

  • ncpride

Just when I think I can’t be surprised by their hostility anymore….wow. This woman’s hatred and jealously of White women is breathtaking in it’s venom. I know it must be hard knowing White women are the most desirable in the world, but really, Randa……calm down. It’s only a dance.

    • D.B. Cooper

Have you seen what Randa looks like? I thought it was a beached whale.

  • DaveMed

Well, Randa Jarrar, neither can I.

I wish White women would have some pride, for heaven’s sake.

  • MekongDelta69

    The headline reads:
“Why I Can’t Stand White Belly Dancers”

    The headline should read:
“Why I Can’t Stand Randa Jarrar from Salon

  • Daniel

I wonder if he hated “I Dream Of Genie”, She didn’t dance at all. But being a smoking hot blue-eyed blonde who noticed?

  • BonV.Vant

“But, here’s the thing. Arab women are not vessels for white women to pour themselves and lose themselves in; we are not bangles or eyeliner or tiny bells on hips”…….correct, they are potential suicide bombers

    • Max

Everytime I see one of these swarthy invaders dressed up like a beekeeper walking down the street or worse yet, pushing a stroller, I think to myself “There goes another mobile terrorist factory”.

      Nasty things-

      • BonV.Vant

yesterday I was stuck on a plane that had two of those somali things on it. Two women in their garb, never shut up, not for one second, the high pitched foreign cackling the whole time.

        • Max

And they smell funny. It is a total sensory experience with these dark-side-of-the-earth leeches.

        • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Somalis are Negroids. No surprise that they were acting like Negroids.

  • BonV.Vant

There is probably not one male in the whole arab world that would object to a white belly dancer. This is just pure cattiness.

    • Took the words right away from my fingers, and that doesn’t happen often.

Women can latch on to the flimsiest excuse not to like other women. I’ve heard feminists say that that every head of state in this world needs to be a woman in order to prevent war. Screw that — If they ever got their wish, World War III would break out as a chain reaction to one of these women heads of state saying of another, “b***h stole my man.”

And also…you wonder why I keep saying that “President Hillary Rodham Clinton” will never happen. Why didn’t happen in 2008 and why it won’t happen in 2016. The inevitable cat house cat fight.

  • BonV.Vant

“Why I can’t stand Arab women imitating white women who write articles”

  • BonV.Vant

I think the OPERATIVE word here is “THIN”. The whole article is a smoke screen for her REAL objection to white women in the business!

  • Robert Binion

The cultures of Arabia have had centuries to perfect their hatreds.

  • Danimalius

“Find another form of self-expression.” Indeed, why don’t you find another yourself. English isn’t a language for Arabs, so stop “appropriating” ours.

    • Her use of English is a micro-aggression. I would feel better if she paid me lots of money and publicly grovelled.

  • pcmustgo

WHITE CULTURE FOR EVERYONE! Oh wait, “whites don’t have a culture”, because of some appropriation here and there. We’re the cultureless void filled by Randa’s belly-dancing.

  • pcmustgo

I’ve said it again, and again and again, it is the WOMEN of other races who are most nasty to white women, who are most nasty to me. Black women are the worst offenders, but white women also have to deal with “shade” from asian/arab/east indian/latina women. They’ve all been trained in college to resent whites. They’re endlessly encouraged to blame and resent us.

    • antiquesunlight

Non-white women hate white women because all their men lust after them.

  • Magician

Why doesn’t this person simply mind her own business? If anything the author should be thankful for belly dancers of other races because those dancers of different ethnicities are “expanding” the market and increasing the popularity.

    • gemjunior

      She is too stupid.

  • DJ

The envious motivations of the author aside, white women who belly dance are cool with me! What isn’t cool, however, is white women who appropriate the most base forms of Negroid style of dancing – that is soooo degradingly inappropriate…… think Miley Cyrus and her little twerkin’ tush.

    • antiquesunlight

Yes, it is disgusting. They are dragging our culture down, down, down.

  • Lewis33

A huge national platform like Salon and she use’s it to complain about white belly dancers? Has she ever written a word deploring the males in her own culture?

  • Lewis33

OK, which one of you changed her Wiki page? “Randa Jarrar (born 1978 in Chicago) is a Palestinian-American novelist, short story writer, racist, and translator.” Either that or she’s pissed off the you know who’s, but I figure it would say anti-semite if that was the case.

    • Diana Moon Glampers

If I ever warrant a wiki page, I definitely want racist in my description too!

  • Natassia

I belly dance because my husband thinks its sexy.

And Miss Brown Lady can kiss my ass.

  • Max

I get offended all of the time when I see Arabs and Africans pretending to work at jobs which were created by whites.

    Ms. Jarrar, are you there?

    • Truth Teller

Non Muslims from those countries are successful and should not be compared to Africans. Jarrar is an ex Muslim hence her bitterness.

      • Max

Blacks are “successful” in shaking down white people and Chinese, Mexicans and Jews are “successful” at a variety of endeavors but I don’t want them here influencing things as they do.

  • Luca

Oh my..Arab dance just got “Gentrified”.

  • Diana Moon Glampers

I can just imagine some beautiful sexy belly dancer being accosted after performing by this angry fat Arab. Here’s an idea: go back to your own country where the belly dancers are wonderfully fat and brown. I’d rather watch an attractive dancer.

    • Andy

Go to your own country where the belly dancers are wonderfully fat and *banned*.

  • John K

White women are the best looking women. Get over it.

    • AndrewInterrupted

      Damn Europhobes…!!!
How much more can white people take?

  • DudeWheresMyCountry?

All non-Whites talk and think about is race.

  • connorhus

Obviously this “arab” person knows nothing about “Belly Dancing” The type of garb she(?) mentions is entirely a private Indian ensemble never seen in Arabic dancers. Bare midriffs is not an “Arab” form of the costume. Other forms of “Belly Dancing” and dress can trace it’s roots to Turkish and even Greek/Balkan origins where the women were very much White at least in skin color.

Arabs do not have some singular cultural claim to the hodge-podge mess that is called “Belly Dancing” today.

  • Whitey Ryan

Check out the tone on this Arab. She hates white women so much.

  • tickyul

I get mad any time a 3rd-9th worlder uses anything with a transistor in it.

  • Truth Teller

I bet salon thinks black ballet dancers are just wonderful and not assuming another races culture. Invent a cause, incorporate as a non profit hire a commission grant writer and no more will you toil.
Liberals are getting funnier and funnier every day. It is like those old Saturday night live skits or an onion story.

  • Truth Teller

Are White belly dancers microagression or White privilege or just plain racist, sexist and appearanceist. Does this idiot know that in Afghan belly dancers are 8 to 25 year old men and boys? It is supposed to have something to do with fertility. Why boys and men?

    • IstvanIN

      That just sounds wrong.

  • Truth Teller

If she wants to understand the occupation why doesn’t she go live in Palestine? Then she could get married to her retarded half brother at age 11.

  • IstvanIN

Stop appropriating my country, my language, my technology. Go back to your superior Middle-Eastern country and you won’t have to see any pretty White women dancers.

Not only is this woman, the author a piece of dog poo, but she is stupid as all get out, culture have been borrowing from each other for millennium. Let her live in a sandstone house in the desert and drop all our achievements.

  • dwpittelli

Here’s what I find a shocking cultural appropriation: When I go to the symphony to hear Western classical music, such as Beethoven, and I find that not only are there Asians and Africans in the audience, but half the symphony’s musicians are actually East Asians! They are appropriating Western music — and worse! — they are dressed up like Europeans in their suit-jackets and ties with half-Windsor knots. Hello! Windsor is a WASP name, and Windsor knots should not be appropriated by non-WASPS, who should wear their kimonos and dashikis and such. Because racist!

    /s

  • Truth Teller

They both look European White to me. Which is which? Gorda is the reason why Arab women shroud themselves. It’s bizzare to be the entertainment at your own wedding.

    • guest12

Neither look european white, it’s some europeans who aren’t white, because they mixed in ancient eras with non-whites, like in the case of sicilians, who can even often cluster with various Middle Easterners like Turks, more so than with Europeans. They’re wogs, that’s why they faced discrimination for precisely being non-white, and lighter MEs look more like caucasus (Who aren’t white, but also rather wogs) people than actual white euros.

      • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Most Sicilians do not look Northern European, that is for sure, but they are definitely White. The old generations of Sicilians were hardcore racial realists, had no use for Negroes, and kept their neighborhoods safe and clean (free of Negroes). LaCosa Nostra was not afraid of the Negro drug dealers, and kept them out of Italian neighborhoods, keeping things safe and clean not just for Italians, but all Whites. Sicilians are as European as it gets in every sense of the word. These days, Southern Italy is more racial realist minded than anyplace in Northern Europe, and is not amenable to hordes of Africans or Muslim extremists moving into their homeland.

  • Sick of it

This woman apparently does not realize that Arabs were originally white people. So really, her people appropriated certain white cultural norms.

    • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

That surprises me as well. Most Arabs in America, especially Arab Christians but also some of the Sunni Muslims who are not into the Muslim extremist garbage, seem to realize that they are Whites, and respect White Americans. It is the Negroes that they detest, at least here in the Midwest. In the Southwest and Florida, Arab store owners probably learn to keep an eye on the Mestizoes as well as the Negroes, and quickly realize that hating Whites would be stupid.

      • Sick of it

Syrians and Lebanese tend to be on our side. The Lebanese were all Christians until relatively recently.

        • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Most definitely. Jamie Farr is Lebanese, as was Danny Thomas. I know some older folks of Lebanese descent, and they most definitely think of themselves as White, and are also racial realists who have little use for the Negroids. They would be disgusted and perplexed at Ms. Jaraar’s pathological fantasy about Arabic people not being White. My guess is that Ms. Jaraar’s father is probably a first class race realist, like most older Arabic men, and that her infatuation with non-Whites is fueled by a rebellion against Dad. At that expensive college She attended, I’ll bet She acquired the idea that Dad was “racist” to see Negroids as the inferior race that they are, and fell for the Liberal indoctrination.

  • Truth Teller

Look at that self satisfied smirk. She thinks she’s beautiful. Now we know why Arab parents have to arrange marriages for their daughters. The parents must have paid a huge dowry to the husband and his parents. Last I heard, Sarah Laurence cost about $45,000 a year tuition alone so her parents can probably afford a huge dowry. Wonder what she wore to dance at her wedding? A traditional caftan type Arab wedding dress? 100 yards of White satin with a full skirt? Standard belly dancing outfit? Whatever it was, it must have been a sight, like a dancing elephant in a Disney movie. She should audition for the next Will Ferrell movie.
Maybe I’ll contact her and see if I can get her wedding video.

Surplus U.S. Army G.P. medium tent.

  • Alexandra1973

I’m sure White men would disagree!

    • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Nothing wrong with her looks. It is her attitude. She was obviously Muslim back in the old country, and has anti-White ideologies. Arab Christian immigrants always knew they were White folks when they came to America. The Islamic religion is a social disease.

  • Malgus

Jarrar: “Hey! You’re not allowed to move that way (dance)! You’re the wrong color!”

Me: “Hey! You’re not allowed in my country! You’re the wrong color!”

    • AndrewInterrupted

      Let’s start a fund.

    • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

I have to wonder if Ms. Jarrar would prefer to see a Negress with a massive, arrogant ego and lips the size of two Kielbasa slices hanging off of her face doing belly dancing. If so, She needs to be forced to spend an afternoon in a Black Ghetto somewhere in America. If She escapes there safely without being gang raped, She will at the very least have been called “White Girl” enough to realize who the enemy is, and that She is an idiot to mock White people.

  • silviosilver

I figured she’d be armed with a degree in Anti-White Studies.

Of course, it’s only “cultural appropriation” when whites do it to non-whites. When non-whites do it to whites it’s “cultural enrichment.”

    • Mergatroyd

The anti-White, Tim Wise types will just say there is no such thing as the White race, it’s a social construct.

Funny how that works. We’re social constructs until it comes to blame for slavery, colonialism and all other evil in the world and AA assignments, THEN, suddenly WHITE exists.

  • Lord Sandwich

Belly dancing is stupid anyway. This is America. We have pole dancing smoking hot strippers from sea to shining sea. The hell with your stupid veil and finger cymbals. Ayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayayay! Thank you, no.

  • antiquesunlight

Liberal 1: “White people must appreciate diverse cultures and assimilate!”
Liberal 2: “I hate white people for participating in my culture!”

However, I think belly dancing is degenerate and unworthy of white women. If they want to dance, they should learn ballet or folk dancing or something like that.

    • Sloppo

I don’t like ballet dancing because it’s terrible for their feet and most of the participants are anorexic.

      • Cid Campeador

It seems that lots of them are chain smokers. Very strange.

        • Sloppo

That does not surprise me at all. It’s an extremely unhealthy lifestyle they tend to have. Many of them starve themselves in order to have the “perfect body” and actually become infertile as a result. I think it’s very sad because they actually work very hard to destroy their health. I wish they would use that energy to do things which are beneficial to themselves and their families.

      • antiquesunlight

Well, I certainly don’t encourage that kind of self-destruction, but there are plenty of women who practice ballet in a very casual way, much like many men learn karate for the fun and exercise of it not because they anticipate getting into a lot of fights.

  • dd121

Odd that no matter how extreme their views are of other peoples they never think they’re bigoted.

  • bubo

The more of these anti-white articles aimed at white women, the better. White women are constantly told to join the “coalition of the oppressed” and work against the white man. Maybe some of them will wake up to the fact that they are also hated by the anti-whites.

  • Truth Teller

Note that although she disapproves of Whites she invited non Arabs to her wedding. I would have loved to see her dance I would have fallen off my chair laughing. I’ve heard some stories from ob-gyn nurses about the difficulty delivering babies from women her size., just digging through mounds of fat.

    • Viv J

That is quite a nightmarish mental image.

  • Truth Teller

The people who go out of their way to be like this from the Middle East are not the upper class kind. By the way, suits and ties were worn by a lot of the upper class types working in the banks in the Levant. People who’s families were rich in the Levant and who left during the late 1800s or early 1900s don’t have this bitterness because their families were the rich ones, even if they were surrounded by poverty. The families who were upper class for generations shouldn’t get slammed for being “Westernized” because they were already acting this way. The only exception is the marriages were arranged and people outside of the family circle were generally not trusted.

  • Andy

The Arabs “appropriated” belly-dancing from their Gypsies.

  • Who Me?

Okay guys, one question: Would you rather watch some svelte young blonde belly dancing, or the “culturally correct” hippopotamus pictured below?

  • Sloppo

I, for one, am happy to see a proud and concerned arab woman taking the attention away from the arab men who stone rape victims to death and putting that attention on the TRUE oppressors of arab women, dancing white women. Thank you, Randa.

  • Truth Teller

Upper class people living in poor countries should not count as “third world” and they shouldn’t be criticized for acting “Western”. That term is reserved for the underclasses. It says a lot about a family if they have the ability to get and stay rich in a poor country. If your family were part of the rich in a poor country or countries, you would also feel staunchly pro capitalist. I am right wing because I want to keep my money to myself and don’t want to share it with trash.

  • mobilebay

Hey, Randa, if you ever see me “cutting a rug,” please don’t attempt to “Step on My Blue Suede Shoes.”

  • benvad

Did you see this arab? She’s hideous.

  • 2eRep

The last thing anyone wants to see at dinner is a black sow or arab hog dancing. Tons of fun.

  • Diana Moon Glampers

Ms. Jarrar’s rant is causing me to experience racism, which is making me fat.

    • Who Me?

Just look at her photograph, you’ll lose your appetite fast. (And probably your lunch, too!)

  • When I think about belly dancers I’m thinking more of Persian and Indian women, not a fat Palestinian.

    • Cid Campeador

Yes. Somehow Muslim has become a race.

  • Mergatroyd

    Boo Freakin’ Hoo.

Arabic women are ugly and no one wants to look at them when the burqa is off. White women are beautiful, whites prefer to look at them. If you prefer to see Arabic women, go back to Saudi Arabia or whatever hell hole you came from and don’t come back.
    You won’t be missed.

Why don’t you stop using all the things whites gave you like the computer you’re using to call us racisssstttt.

    • Truth Teller

A lot of people you call “ugly and nonwhite” look white. Is Shannon Elizabeth hideous? Is Marlo Thomas hideous?

      • Mergatroyd

The one in that photo certainly is, LOL LOL.

Shannon Elizabeth? She looks like any other of the 100s of millions of non-whites with the same dark hair, same dark eyes, same dark skin…they all look alike to me. She is nothing to look at. Ditto for Marlo Thomas who is what? 80?

They can’t be us, they’ll never be us no matter how much they have plastic surgery, dye their hair, lighten their skin or wear colored contact lenses.

        Next question.

        • Truth Teller

Yes Jarrar is definitely fugly. As for Shannon Elizabeth, how does she look nonwhite if there are plenty of Greeks who look like her? If you say darker hair and eyes makes you nonwhite that would exclude a lot of darker Europeans.

Same with Marlo Thomas. I am talking about Marlo in her earlier years. Ashkenazi Jews are considered white and Shannon Elizabeth looks similar so why the double standard?

          • Mergatroyd

Go back and read my post again and then maybe you’ll get it.

          • guest12

Because Greeks/Southern Italians/Ashkenazis aren’t fully white as they have ME ancestry in the first place, that’s why they are called wogs, and northern caucasians are even whiter than sicilians/ashkenazis, but they are called ‘black’ in northern/eastern europe, just demonstrating how exotic they can be. Plenty of Sicilians and Ashkenazis are even outright brownish in complexion, no way they can be fully white, although they are still noticeably whiter than the average ME, get it? Even in Greece, speaking of Greeks, Golden Dawn, are assaulting and attacking syrian, etc. ME immigrants, so even wog Greeks can generally tell the difference.

    • Cid Campeador

She is kinda homely. But there are lots of lovely Arab women but if they’re Muslims, we never get to see their faces.

      • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Lots of beautiful Arab women indeed. Ms. Jaraar is being highly disrespectful by calling her people non-White, comparing her people to the inferior Negroids and Mestizos. She doesn’t understand what race actually is, and I suspect that She is naïve regarding what She is truly comparing herself to by calling herself non-White. She needs to spend some time in a Hispanic Barrio or a Black neighborhood. Hopefully, She would cease to compare herself the muds if She saw the reality of how they actually live.

  • Mergatroyd

Somebody notify the ADL and have them get after it. To them, there is no such thing as a Palestinian so there is no way she can claim to be one. Jews know how to take care of terrorists and she’s admitted to being a part of the PLO.

    Win-Win.

  • kikz

    or a decidedly non-White Guenivere.

  • scutum

What? This is what passes for important at salon?

    • Cid Campeador

Salon is a left wing rag. I switched to American Handgunner,

    • WR_the_realist

Yes, I’m afraid that this is precisely the sort of article that Salon considers to be important. Which is why no white person who doesn’t hate himself would read it, except to satisfy the same perverse emotions that make people look at 12 car pile ups.

    • The left is very diligent these days when it comes to reinforcing their own irrelevance.

  • Cid Campeador

    Gee Randa,
I just Googled your picture. You look pretty White to me! Shall we call you “Black”?
Salma Hayek is also of Arabic origin through her father.
Danny Thomas was also an Arab.
WTF is wrong with you. You use the work “white” as though it were an obscenity!
YOU are another self hating White.

    • BonV.Vant

Inside her is a thin white woman who wants to get out…no make that five thin white women

      • guest12

She has ‘brown’ ME features, she doesn’t look white, just a lighter-pigmented ME.

    • guest12

Chechens are considered ‘blackass’ by northern/eastern european standards, and they are even whiter than sicilians. Southern Italians/Ashkenazis/Greeks are not white, they’re wogs, some can look white, others look ME, because they have ME ancestry in the first place, and thus they aren’t fully white, but rather wogs. As for her, she has clear middle eastern features, not even pseudo-sicilian looking, not european, lighter MEs look more like caucasus people than white euros. Zimmerman isn’t white either, trying to assimilate non-whites into white culture doesn’t work, see what happened in Latin America.

      • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Zimmerman is a Mestizo, so he is clearly non-White. The AmerIndian genetics of the Mestizos is why they have created a bastardized version of Southern European culture in South America. Catholicism seems to have done little to stop this. Without the influence of the Europeans, the AmerIndians of South America would still be living in the stone age, ditto for the North American Indians. Give an AmerIndian a beer, and a senseless fight is inevitable.

  • TheAntidote

My god. That would be quite a sight, wouldn’t it? A shaking, bobbling mountain of lard. Mohammed was right: throw a tarp over the whole thing!

    • I think they call that “twerking”. Yuck!

    • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Each to his own. I prefer full-figured ladies. She is one hot lass.

  • SFLBIB

Hoo, boy. How much longer before we run out of victims?

  • Lada Belyy

I don’t like non-Whites that play string and wind instruments in musical pieces, written by White artists. I don’t like non-Whites that play White sports, read White books, speak White languages, wear White clothes, then flood into EVERY White country, apply for welfare, and expect our societies to conform to their non-White anti-Whitism. That’s White geNOcide. Anti-racist is a code word for anti-White.

  • DieWulfe

    Anyone see an agenda?

  • Truth Teller

Randa looks just like that 5ft 3 400 pd dance teacher in Dance Moms. A bit more blubber, but Dance Mom teacher has the sense to cover up her arms and chest. I was taught in private school that a lady never makes fun of people, especially appearance challenged other women, but oh my Gawd. And she looks like a fair skinned brown haired European White. Sarah Lawrence is ultra progressive. Maybe they have an affirmative action box for the appearance challenged.

    • Truth Teller

Here is what she said during one of her rants:
I am fat- really fat, and in the past year, I have become more and more in love with my fat. I love my body rolls. I love my double-chin. I love my flappy arms. I love my stretch marks.

For years I hated trying clothes on, but now I love going to F21 or anywhere else and trying on whatever the hell I damn please. And, because I am gainfully employed, I can buy whatever outfit I damn please. I wear whatever I want– red lipstick and tight clothes if I want to. Sexy & flamboyant clothing is not limited to certain types of bodies.

    • guest12

She doesn’t look like a european white, she looks like a lighter ME, she has clear ME facial features. Plenty of lighter mixed latinos, but they still have different facial features and aren’t considered white.

  • Truth Teller

In New York it’s mostly the Greek restaurants that have belly dancers. She must be a Christian Palestinian because the Muslims are getting more and more puritanical about women’s dress every day. If she went back to Palestine with those arms, neck and chest all blobbing about she would be attacked for immodesty.

    • Truth Teller

She says she is an ex Muslim. I have no idea what religion she is now.

      • Interesting, because apostasy in Islam carries the death penalty.

        • Truth Teller

I’ve known this family where both sides converted from Islam to Christianity. They were from the UAE and moved to the US.

      • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

I think her religion is now Liberalism. This is why She is infatuated with non-Whites and Homosexuality, and has such as issue with men gazing at a belly dancer.

    • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Nothing wrong with the Arab Muslims being puritanical about sexual morals. This is the complete opposite of non-Whites, Asians included. Thailand and Cambodia have extreme problems with the sex trade. The Mestizos have very high rates of out of wedlock birth, and the Negroes are Sodom and Gomorrah with regards to sexual matters. White America’s decline in our sexual morals is shameful, and Arabic Muslims are right to be repulsed by this.

  • shmo123

There isn’t a bigger group of whining, bed-wetters than the writers at Salon.

  • JohnSmith

If you don’t want your culture “appropriated”, leave the USA, and the hapless EU countries that have taken you in like fools, and return to your native lands!

  • Janice Jordan

At the risk of weird comments here…First I am white. I am a woman. Nope cant dance worth a crap. However…before I would go imitating any other culture I would first study the reasons and meaning of things. Intelligence would commonly be used. If the white women would do so then these comments could be ignored. She would be up to date of its history and hopefully not place herself in any other culture and making herself look ridiculous and draw ridicule to herself and our race. All races have different beliefs and ways of demonstrating them to the world. Some are ok and some are just stupid…to some of us. Not one of us had the decision of whom or where we were brought into this world. But we do have the power of understanding and tolerance. I am very proud to be white just as I would be proud of any other race I was born into. Yes these certain women attract such posts as this one and deservingly so. They should stay within our own race and culture and out of others. My thoughts.

  • Untanned animal hides.

  • Jon

Shows u how Jealous they are of White women and yes Islam is only moral for the masses but the elite can do what ever they want. I bet she turned green with envy because White women are the Envy of the world today.

    • Zaporizhian Sich

True, the debauchery of the ruling elite in Muslim nations is nearly boundless.

      • Jon

They know they can never match European Society in anything so they whine about our women and how they make it look so much better.

  • Bwood65

I have Middle Eastern heritage on both sides of my family. I am a well built woman and thin with very fair skin and don’t look Middle Eastern, but let me tell you something, if you came up to me and told me I have no business doing a dance you’d find yourself picking out skewers from your face. Who are you to decide who can and can’t perform. I know many men who personally would prefer a fit woman be dancing for them rather than one that looks like Jabba the Hut.

My point here is nobody died and put you in charge of who can and can’t dance and if they’re doing a fair job of it and everyone is entertained what does it hurt. You need to change your attitude.

Oh and for the record, people of Middle Eastern heritage are considered part of the Caucasian race therefore making them white. God, I hope you don’t go killing yourself now, knowing you aren’t anything special. Your article certainly proves it.

    • Truth Teller

Yes this is true. People, telling people from there not to use technology are not used to the upper class ones. My family was part of the top upper class during Ottoman times and changed their names ect to blend in. A lot of people were jealous and disliked my family for no reason. Jews called them traitors and Arabs called them sinful/wicked. A lot of things were forced on people. These people don’t know that not everyone spoke Arabic as their main language even.

      • guest12

Caucasian or rather Caucasoid doesn’t mean white, Both Native Americans and East Asians are mongoloid, yet Native Americans are not asians, as far as ralph nader, etc. you have it backwards, it’s sicilians, ashkenazis, etc. who can look like middle easterners/arabs because they have middle eastern ancestry, not the other way around, so they aren’t even fully white in the first place, they’re wogs. Chechens are even whiter than sicilians, but they are considered ‘blackass’ by northern/eastern european standards. Put that into some perspective r.e whiteness.

        • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

AmerIndians are not Oriental, no, but they are still descended from the Mongol hordes.

    • Zaporizhian Sich

I’ve seen Ukrainian, Russian and women from central Asia who are amazingly good belly dancers, as well as a LOT of them in South America and the U.S. I have also seen some Egyptian, Turkish and Persians who are very talented. Exactly where belly dancing originates is still a matter of debate, but it’s known to have been practiced for at least 6,000 years. Some think it came from Egypt, others from India, but where it came from is not important. I’d rather see white European women belly dance than do that idiotic “twerking.”
Classical music is a European art form. It does not bother me that there are Middle Eastern or Asian musicians who play it as well as any white European would. The author of the article as gone over the rainbow, literally to find not a pot of gold but a sack or rocks at the end.
The 19th century Ukrainian poet, artist and nationalist Taras Shevchenko had this to say about adopting aspects of other people’s cultures. “Absorb from every culture bur forget not one’s own.” In other words, he thought learning from other people is a good thing as long as people do not forget their own culture and heritage.

  • Perhaps its insulting because the white belly dancers actually look pretty. No swarthy looks or huge hooked noses. Its hardly turn-on.

  • Truth Teller

She looks like Honey Boo Boo’s Mother before she dyed her hair blond.

  • WR_the_realist

If Randa Jarrar is a principled opponent of cultural appropriation, why is she writing an article in English?

  • puffdaddy

I hope she never plays classical music.

  • Truth Teller

Upper class families were not living in mud huts. They were not nomadic and riding camels everywhere. They were living in the cities making money in trade and commerce. People claim that civilizations like the Phoenicians were so great but want to deny them to people living in the Levant today.

  • Fraunhofer Society

Like all Asian appliances , there would be no “Liquid-crystal display” without the founding work and inventions of Whites who were the first at discovering, patenting and applying liquid crystals technology (i.e., Friedrich Reinitzer, Marconi Company, RCA, Hoffmann-La Roche, T. Peter Brody, and In-Plane Switching).

Asians only copy or improve what we have already built. Nothing new here…

  • David Ashton

I am not denying the personal talents of individual black dancers or singers, and I do not support threats to their life and limb.

Here are my own tastes in a nutshell: (1) Multiracial casting on stage for mono-cultural scripts is a usually a nonsense, just as silly as miscasting (a Chinese Shylock, an Eskimo Othello). (2) I dislike the political motives that deliberately cast black males with white females in usually erotic partnerships in intimate roles in ballet, theatre and films. (3) Personally I do not like rap “music” (or lyrics) or even most jazz, and generally I fund negro pop videos stupid or disgusting (4) I do not object to black musicians in classical orchestras – which is a more respectable position than jumping up and down to crude rhythmic beats which aim at the genitals rather than the brain.

  • Steven Bannister

I’d actually respect this – if it weren’t for the fact that non-whites have no problem whatsoever with appropriating white culture, fashions, technologies and institutions when it suits them…so to hell with em.

  • Funruffian

She’s most likely a dark-skinned Arab. There are some fairer skinned Arabs and Middle Easterners, but I think this woman is suffering from envy of European Whites which is very common among Arab women.

  • Le Fox

Funny, since most Indians prefer their dancers to be of lighter complexion.

  • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Most Arabs are racial realists who look down on Negroes as the inferior race that they are. I spent quite a bit of time around Arabic men in my job a number of years ago, and a few of their wives. I bonded with these guys on the common ground of our hatred of Negroes and their inferior ways, something that I rarely enjoy with other Whites these days. These guys had not been in the U.S. long. They did not have a hatred of Whites or European culture, but utterly detested American greed, and permissive American Liberal morals. We also bonded on these issues. They hated homosexuals, and loose American women that had slept with scores of men. They had no hatred for folks like myself who wanted to maintain decent moral values in America, and hated America trash culture, not European culture. As far as Nationality, these guys were Iraqi and Lebanese, both Iraqi Catholics (Chaldeans) and Sunni Muslims. When I informed them that American trash culture derives from White Liberals holding Negroes up on a pedestal, and adopting their depraved ways, I was met with hearty agreement. When I spoke with pride of my own German/Scandinavian heritage, I never sensed any hatred from them. .

  • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

While I can respect Ms. Jarrar wanting to see Belly Dancing remain a custom celebrated by her people, I am repulsed by her use of the label “White” in such a hateful fashion. She uses the adjective White in the same spirit as a Negro, Mestizo, or other non-Caucasian minority. Belly dancers are popular in Greece, and the Greeks are, without a doubt, White people. Not only are Greeks Caucasian, Greece is a European country with a proud history, and is a Christian land, and I doubt that any Greek belly dancer would take kindly to her insistence on White women not being belly dancers.
The Arabs that I have known did not consider themselves European, but considered themselves White. Arabs are racially Caucasian, closely related to Greeks and Italians genetically. They may engage in violence when under the spell of extreme Islam, but this is due to Islamic ideology, not racial genetics as with Negroes and Amerindians/Mestizoes. Arabs who have significant Negroid admixture in their genes are a different story, but that is to be expected, as these folks are actually Mulattoes.
Out of curiosity, I pulled up a picture online of Ms. Jarrar. She looks 100% Caucasian, would definitely be seen as a White woman by the Chalupa Eaters in the Barrio, and also in Chinatown. If Ms. Jarrar actually hates us Whites, maybe She should try to eat dinner at a Negro rib joint or Taco joint where She is surrounded by Mexicans. If She leaves with her life and without being violated, I’ll bet She will start considering herself White, and thinking of her Arabic relatives as non-European Whites, not Brownies or Darkies.

  • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

I doubt that She actually received death threats from White Southerners. This sounds like a piece of Libtard propaganda. She may have received boos and jeers, though, as well She should have, and this probably bruised her ego, prompting her to make up slanderous lies against the White audiences. Blacks do this kind of stuff all of the time. Classical Ballet is not a Negro art form. Negresses look like idiots trying to do these delicate ballet moves.

  • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

I’ve always found it interesting that, before 50 years ago, White Southerners were allegedly so cruel to Negroes. I spoke with many an elderly person who had grown up in this vilified old South when I was growing up. Most Southern Whites in the old days would give you the shirt off of their back, and would only throw a punch in self defense, or the defense of loved ones. They understood the Negro temperament, though, and what it took for Whites to retain their dignity with large numbers of Negroes living in close proximity. The Negro is a very violent and cruel species of human that erupts unexpectedly and needlessly into violence. Southerners in the old days employed common sense in dealing with Negroes, and did what needed to be done to protect themselves from Negroes.

    • Sick of it

Outsiders don’t understand that we simply did not accept criminal behavior. And yes we just plain strung up people for it (including whites). Have a problem with it? Don’t commit a crime. Oh wait, they sent in the military instead.

      • amilah

Yes, because when someone commits a crime, you murder them. But wait… Isn’t that kind of hypocritical since murder is a crime? You and your little friend justifying this crap are sick in the head. Murder is never acceptable and fit you to sit Ann’s think that any type of petty crime deserves a punishment as serious as death just proves that the white race is just as barbaric now as they were in their past. You should be ashamed. You’re not even a proper human being quite honestly.

    • amilah

Lmao it’s funny when you say negros are violent. Guess you don’t remember a all the wars that went on in Europe before they ventured out? War if the roses? Hundred years war? All the wars between the greeks? The holy Roman empire? Do you also remember the Spanish inquisition? Or the conquistadors who gave Mayans and Aztecs blankets purposely infected with small pox? Came over and completely destroyed the native American population? They were minding their business across the ocean, were whites protecting themselves then? How about south African apartheid? Colonization of india? How about Hiroshima and Nagasaki? What about for the past 15 years, all these white politicians sending our young men to die in pointless wars for profit? Lololol yes you’re right, white people are so peaceful.

  • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

The whole point of belly dancing is the male gaze. If Ms. Jaraar wants to “gaze” at other Women belly dancing, I suspect Lesbian ideations. I am sure that the Liberal Arts heck hole college She went to is encouraging Homosexuality, though, along with the ignorant worship of the inferior races. I also suspect that homosexuality is exciting for Ms. Jaraar, at it is appropriately viewed as repulsive sodomy in Middle Eastern culture. If She truly wants to respect her roots and carry on the proud traditions of the Middle East, She should be a socially conservative racial realist who is repulsed by homosexuality, and repulsed by the pathological behaviors of Negroes and Mestizos instead of fussing over Northern European looking women belly dancing. Negroes are Abeed where her family is from, and are despised.

  • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

She is just another self-hating White Libtard who is infatuated with non-Whites.

    • Karen Bradley Ehler

I disagree. Her views are more akin to conservatives.I don’t think it’s political though – just plain prejudice that she is in denial about. I’m a left leaning feminist with an independent streak and will point out BS on all sides and let me tell you, her rant DOES NOT represent the left or feminism in any way. That’s why so many folks on Salon are commenting and angry with her. Her rant is the antithesis of feminism and most of the progressive readers are calling her out on her racism.

  • OHDeutscheKlezmerRebel

Listen to traditional Arab music, though, and anyone with appreciation of real music will be impressed. None of the non-Caucasians have a musical tradition of this quality. Listen to traditional Oriental music, and there is no comparison to the complex harmonies of the Arab world, rife with quarter tones. Only Europe and the Middle East have produced music of this caliber.

  • Why can’t people leave each other the hell alone —- you realize none of this stuff will matter once whatever apocalyptic crap happens – think about it logically or at least try to – I realize this is alot to ask from the average human. The fact that you allow such petty things to literally bother you so intensely sounds more like you have something missing from your life or you simply need something to do. There are many more things to be seriously worried or bothered about. No really there are – try really hard to think about it, make a list if you have to. But just for sake of argument, what is your response to say, something like this: what if an individual simply incredibly enjoys the music and dance more than anything else there is – none of the others out there is of any interest to them – they gave them a shot, but well, just plain can’t stand it – say for example a person is German or of German descent and they wish to be a dancer – should they only get to dance and listen to Polka music even if it literally is like fingernails on a chalkboard to them? Or if a person is Irish or of Irish descent – should they only get to dance an listen to Irish step dance? What if it is just incredibly annoying to them? You’re pretty much saying “Hey you’re ‘this’ therefore you can only do ‘this’ and listen to ‘this’ or else you’re going to piss me off.” Hhhhmmmmm….. anyone think of what else all throughout history this sounds like and leads to? Anything positive or beneficial in any possible way come from it? So hey when the belly dancer’s pictures/videos came up that you looked at – how did it impact your day/evening/weekend? If you have a family or a partner or whatever your living arrangements may be, did it change what day you had to go grocery shopping, pay rent/mortgage, get your oil changed in your car, affect what color shirt you chose to wear, what tasks you completed at work, how you were going to care for your sick friend/relative/pet/yourself, etc…………… The pettiness of humanity is ultimately what will keep us in the dark ages and will most definitely be our undoing.

Ugh, the author is racist for trying to restrict a simple dance to one race. I scrolled to the comments looking for some people who were thinking the same thing and instead I found people who responded with racism of a different type. Everyone can dance how they like and whites are not superior to any other race. We’re all equal and should coexist peacefully, sharing and learning other people’s culture is good as long as its done respectfully and accurately.
