Diversity Is Strength! It’s Also . . . Forensic Science Scandals

“Don’t ask, don’t tell” (DADT) may be dead in the military, but it is very much alive in the world of diversity hiring. “We won’t ask if you are qualified, and don’t tell if you aren’t.”

Law enforcement and criminal justice rely on modern, First-World police science—medical examiners, crime scene investigators, ballistics experts and forensic scientists. These people conduct autopsies; gather evidence at crime scenes; dust for fingerprints; test-fire and examine suspected murder weapons and ammunition; and weigh and test substances suspected to be drugs in narcotics cases.

If the “experts” are incompetent and/or dishonest, countless innocent people will be doomed to spend years in prison, some may even be executed, while the guilty will go free.

Thanks to the blessings of diversity, America has now reached this level of Keystone Kop police science.

  • In Boston on November 22, Trinidadian-born Annie Khan Dookhan pled guilty to 27 counts of “obstruction of justice, perjury, and tampering with evidence,” during the ten years that she was a Massachusetts state police chemist, and was sentenced by Suffolk County Superior Court Judge Carol S. Ball to three-to-five years in prison, and two years’ probation.

Judge Ball said:

[T]he consequences of her behavior, which she ought to have foreseen, have been nothing short of catastrophic . . . . Innocent persons were incarcerated, guilty persons have been released to further endanger the public, millions and millions of public dollars are being expended to deal with the chaos Ms. Dookhan created, and the integrity of the criminal justice system has been shaken to the core.

Dookhan’s misconduct-tainted cases involving over 40,000 defendants. So far, almost 350 convicted defendants have been released, and the state crime lab where Dookhan worked for ten years has been shuttered.

Dookhan lied in claiming to have a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Massachusetts. All Human Resources had to do was contact the school where she claimed to have earned it. But it would be “racist” to scrutinize a diversity applicant’s bona fides.

While Dookhan was working ever more rapidly, her colleagues’ work had slowed down, due to a Supreme Court decision requiring drug analysts to appear in court. Quality control should have caught what she was up to—except that she was the head of quality control! She also violated security, and deliberately contaminated thousands of samples.

Finally, Dookhan maliciously claimed that thousands of samples that she had not tested—that’s how she could “complete” her work so rapidly—had tested positive for narcotics, and on top of that, lied about their weights, so as to turn offenses into higher-level crimes entailing longer sentences.

Dookhan was only caught when she forged a colleague’s initials on documents to remove samples she had no business touching.

My reader-researcher RC wrote,

She’s a twofer: A person of color as well as female.

How much will Taxachusetts pay to those whose civil rights were violated thanks to her falsified drug tests?

The answer: Potentially billions.

At least the winsome Dookhan has confessed to most of her crimes, and shown contrition. But what made her commit them?

Some observers suggested she sought to impress her superiors. However, I believe the simplest explanation is: she did it because she could. Dookhan worked in an institution in which, previously, applicants were thoroughly vetted prior to hiring, and worked in a secure environment under strong normative constraints on their behavior. But because she was a diversity hire, she found herself in a state of moral anomie, in which there was no vetting, security, or institutional constraints on her behavior. She was the proverbial kid in the candy shop.

Dookhan was merely the latest diversity police science scandal.

Joyce Gilchrist

Gilchrist was a legendary, black Oklahoma City Police Department forensic chemist whose (initially non-ironic) nickname was “Black Magic,” because for 21 years she was the consummate expert witness, her credibility unchallenged—until 2001:

Oklahoma City Police Chief M.T. Berry on Tuesday fired forensic chemist Joyce Gilchrist, whose lab techniques and testimony have been under scrutiny by federal, state and local investigators for several months.

Gilchrist, 53, was fired for a variety of reasons, including “laboratory mismanagement, criticism from court challenges and flawed casework analysis,” according to a police statement.

As I wrote in 2003 for Middle American News,

For years, Gilchrist’s critics claimed she had falsified evidence and given false testimony, which caused 23 men to be sentenced to death, eleven of whom were executed.

Gilchrist has steadfastly insisted that she is innocent of any wrongdoing. She has never been criminally charged.

Millions of Americans learned about the Gilchrist scandal when it was dramatized in 2001, in a “ripped from the headlines” episode of the popular TV series, Law & Order, “Myth of Fingerprints.”

But, following the m.o. of liberal producer Dick Wolf’s show, his scriptwriters changed the rogue, black police chemist into a blonde, white woman.

Also unlike reality, the fictionalized chemist was prosecuted, convicted, and imprisoned.

Jonathan Salvador

Everyone who worked with Jonathan Salvador in Houston described him as a friendly, hard-working young man, who wanted to improve his work. Unfortunately, as he later admitted, he was in hopelessly over his head. Although he was a police chemist at a Texas Department of Public Safety lab, he did not understand chemistry.

Nevertheless, Salvador’s superiors were pleased with him, and he failed his way up the ladder. He was only caught when he substituted the drug lab results from one court case on an unrelated case. Suspended in February 2012, Salvador was either fired or quit in August, 2012 (reports conflict):

[A]fter falsifying evidence, and acting ‘with total disregard for policy and procedure,’ according to an inspector general’s report.

And now, the verdicts in some 4,900 narcotics cases are in jeopardy. So far, 18 convictions have been overturned on which Salvador did lab work—for example, this one.

A grand jury heard testimony on Salvador’s case last year, but did not indict him.

A Texas state police crime lab scientist whose shoddy work may have tainted thousands of drug cases had been promoted despite a history of problems doing accurate and timely work, according a review by the Texas Forensic Science Commission.

A commission report adopted Friday found that Houston crime lab worker Jonathan Salvador struggled with chemistry, was told to correct his work in about a third of his cases and, according to his supervisors, routinely scrambled to keep up with monthly work expectations.

On paper, Gilchrist, Dookhan, and Salvador were all qualified. They all had the requisite college degrees. And yet, they were all utterly unqualified.

Such scandals could have easily been prevented by exercising the hard-won knowledge that has grown out of generations of the development of tools such as college admissions and professional tests. But such tests had been ruled “racist” because blacks, Hispanics, and many other non-white groups did not do as well, on average, as whites and Northeast Asians did.

And so, in the mid-1960s, colleges began a massive program of sotto voce Affirmative Action, whereby first blacks, then members of all sorts of groups who on average could not come remotely close to meeting admissions requirements, were admitted. Once admitted, these students enjoyed collegiate social promotion and grade inflation.

Affirmative Action got a boost from the Supreme Court in 1971, when the Court ruled in Griggs v. Duke Power that requiring job tests of applicants, or for promotions within a firm was a form of racial discrimination, since blacks (who have a lower average IQ, 78-85, than whites, who average 100) don’t do as well on them, on average, as whites.

Griggs resulted in millions of young people being forced to attend college for no good reason, at great expense in time and money, to receive a substitute IQ test in the form of a college degree. This made Higher Ed, despite its constant cries of poverty, much richer and more powerful. However, faculty and officials engaged in ever more aggressive Affirmative Action, and thereby destroyed the value of the bachelor’s degree, and then even graduate degrees.

When companies that still care about quality seek valid but informal selection mechanisms, such as not hiring applicants with black underclass names like S—avious, academic pseudo-scholars accuse them of—what else?—racism. And if anyone dares notice this pattern of advantaging incompetents “of color,” followed by scandals, the same pseudo-scholars and activists cry “racism!”

There is no viable solution to the vicious cycle of Affirmative Action. An immigration moratorium would stop the scourge of additional waves of incompetent Third Worlders, but would not solve the problem of a country that has been kidnapped by racial socialists. For that malady, stronger medicine is indicated.

      That is exactly right. There is the token black guy at my husband’s company that is beyond incompetent. He still doesn’t comprehend his job even after two years, has caused near disaster on several occasions, and usually stays on his cell phone most of the day. They have since given him minimal responsibility to divert chaos, and everyone knows why he is there, including him I’m sure….. to avoid a lawsuit. All at a cost of a little over fifty grand a year.

        Suppose a company were to go on strike and leave all the AA hires and other incompetents in charge. The company or organization would fold under its own incompetence from an operational standpoint. Then subsequently it will lose all of its shareholders and clientele.
        Has anyone ever had the courage to take this to the test. It might work if each of them would forego the fear of being branded a ‘racist’.

          MF Global, before it’s demise, would fire entire departments to get rid of a few incompetent blacks which it had acquired through the acquisition of other firms. The reason behind this was the blacks couldn’t sue if the entire department was shutdown and everyone lost their job.
          AT&T (Southwestern Bell) used a similar tactic to acquire the blackened Ameritech (Chicago area phone company), then moved operations to Texas.

        Everyone has lived that story or is presently living it. Myself included. You just described every department of every federal agency and every federal contractor that exists today.

        Over time it becomes familiar and ambient. That’s the troubling part–how you get used to it and no longer fret over it. It’s a sickening feeling. That’s why I will never work for a large company again.

        I ask myself how aghast the founding fathers would be if the time machine were perfected and they were able to take a peek at the America they founded 250 years after. Imagine the bug-eyes.

          How about bringing the ancient Germanic peoples to the future and showing them all the wonders of diversity in their once only White countries? After a brief tour through the modern Western world our Germanic forefathers would feel the need to pick up their axes, spears and swords with every intention to make the Western world a little less diverse! Oh boy, if only we had our forefathers around to show us the right way, we would already have forgotten the meaning of the word “diversity.”

          It is unfortunate however that we still don’t have that time machine…

    This is old news for us in the Houston area. We had a Vietnamese woman in charge of our crime lab several years back. Many court cases were tossed. If I wanted to live a life of crime (other than skyjacking), I would welcome incompetents running the forensics department.

Leftist elites are mentally diseased, so you can’t expect anything different from them, but many average people with common sense would certainly object.

    Just think how many millions of unqualified minorities have taken jobs away from a white man or woman, who would actually be capable of doing the job and doing it well. Just think of how much these minority “professionals” are paid by their government employers. Just think about how much economic inefficiency is introduced into the system. Just think about the soaring taxes competent white workers pay to keep the Potemkin Village looking good.

    Minorities pretend to work in my experience at the university. In fact, some of them don’t even bother to show up for work if the office is small enough and obscure enough. We had one woman adminstrator who did show up, but spent her entire day at the university doing nothing but work for her business–a bookkeeping, tax, and accounting service. She was exposed when another minority was caught with his hand in the till. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg in my opinion. Government promotes these incompetents, (as stated in the story) and all we can do is stand around and watch
    As far as I’m concerned, the social contract between whites and government is broken. The government is my enemy, and if I can put some sugar in its gas tank to help bankrupt it or slow it down, then sabotage is my game. Certainly, I have no obligation to cooperate with a corrupt system. The Nuremberg trials established my right of conscience to disobey the government when it violates natural law. And disobey I will.

      Companies won’t take on the Feds. The reason is pure economics. It’s cheaper of pay off a few incompetent blacks than to create the bad will that the government promote. Fighting for white justice just isn’t worth it to them.

      That isn’t implied, they’re actively doing it. The so-called “innocents project” seeks to free people from jail based on dna evidence. I’d like to point out that the lack of dna evidence is not exculpatory in and of itself. Nobody ever says that they just assume innocence.

    There is a solution to this particular problem though. Professional tests. Engineers, for example, have to take several tests and to demonstrate experience in their field. It’s next to impossible to fake it or cheat. They need to expand it, since academia has become so corrupted.

    Americans learned about the forensic lab scandal involving Joyce Gilchrist on the Law and Order tv show. The producers, however, reversed the races and turned Gilchrist into a white woman. They did the same thing with a story that took place in Brooklyn, where a black man viciously raped an orthodox jewish woman. Law and Order’s producers again changed the races and turned the victim into a black woman and the rapist was an orthodox rabbi.

    An interesting lie. Although these things play a part, only on TV do they actually play an important part in law enforcement.
    The bottom line. For some reason, no one has ever, in my opinion advanced a reasonable explanation why. Criminals will simply tell whomever asks the, including law enforcement, all about their crimes to their ability to do so. Blacks won’t even wait to be asked. In the modern era, black criminals are tripping over themselves to film their crimes and upload them wherever they can.
    This IS law enforcement. All that other stuff is ancillary. Typically, a police officer will check wherever is currently popular for criminals to brag online about what they do. Typically, their name, address and phone number are right there. Sometimes they go down there and ask the criminal about his crime (and he is more than happy to tell them all about it). Sometimes they just call him up and ask.
    Before the internet, cops would simply talk to criminals and politely ask them about their crimes. The problem with black people is they are retarded and have a shifting sense of reality so it is quite common to ask them and then, an hour later when asked again, get a different story. They aren’t lying….they are, by our standards, psychotic. But, when a jury hears this, they assume discrepancies are lies.
    Other races, this is much more straight forward. The criminal simply admits what he has done and supplies details the police would never in a million years uncover.
    I really didn’t understand how universal this trait among criminals was until the BTK killer. This brilliant, high functioning psychopath who went so far as to have a wife and child just to provide cover for his murders, when caught, they simply put him in front of a classroom with prosecutors and police sitting at desks like students and for hours and hours he went into extreme detail about his crime.
    I’m not sure what to make of that. He didn’t seem to be acting out of compulsion and when asked about it he really gave no answer other than “why not”.
    It’s not important. What is important is the universal, reliable method to gather evidence about crime is to simply ask the criminal.

    For many years I was involved with publications for the lab tech professional association. I read dozens of articles about quality assurance, proficiency testing, certification, and licensure for laboratory scientists. Then I read this and wonder whether that was all just smoke.

        I don’t. The people that I worked for were primarily interested in hospital, reference, and physician office labs. I don’t ever recall seeing anything about police agency labs. I suspect the politics involved makes a big difference.

        Yet still some wonder why we second guess “diversity” employees bureaucrats or co-workers? Whenever I see a black supervising white employees I now just naturally assume he or she is an incompetent, until proven otherwise, put into a position of authority over people far better qualified to hold his position.

        That may anger the left, but when time and again we find examples of diversity put into positions for which they were never qualified, it’s always safer to assume they’re complete morons than not.

    There was a black San Francisco probation officer who was himself on parole for murder and was a high school drop out. He was actually visiting his parole officer in the state building when he saw the job ad. He applied and got the job as the test had been abolished by the courts. This was before cell phones. About 2 year later the probation dept began investigating huge long distance phone bills. They were not far away, just suburbs mostly Oakland, Richmond and Pittsburg. But since he was on the phone all day long the bills mounted up. They couldn’t fire a black man for running up the bills so they ran a background check and checked with the college he claimed to have graduated from. Finally he was fired. Cell phones means they can sit on their cell phones all day blabbing as loudly as possible and get away with it.
    It’s very much like the old mafia trick of extorting a business or organization often a labor union to put a mafia thug on the payroll for a no show job. At least the mafia guys only showed up on payday but the blacks are there every day being obnoxious, loud and looking for a fight.

The latest thing the liberal “all blacks are innocent” crew is to coerce the judges to abolish DNA evidence because DNA evidence proves without a scintilla of a doubt that blacks are guilt y as charged.

    In 2002 it was revealed that the Houston Police Department crime lab was staffed by lazy, incompetent, unqualified people. Innocent people were sent to prison because of their screw-ups. It got so bad that even The New York Times took note and asked the question, “Worst Crime Lab in the Country?” in a March 2003 article.

    Dookhan quite likely descends from a group of Muslims who fled India to settle in Trinidad. There is a large cluster of them there. It is obvious how she got away with such obvious fraud for so long. Her diversity numbers border on radioactive:

    Foreign born
    Born on an island (The EEOC and the OFCCP find that sexy for some reason. Diversity chic?)

  • I read some years ago about another diversitard Affirmative-Action hire doing the same thing: falsifying police forensic test results. This one was somewhere in the Midwest. Discovery of these incidents may just be scratching the surface; this may be much more common than we think.

    Jews are not a race, but a religion. Racially, jews run the gamut from blonde haired and blue eyed to black african.

    What is the difference between white and caucasian? Are only aryans white? To my knowledge, Amren has not defined the term “white;” so those of us who are not aryan are not excluded here.

    Also, orthodox jews have a low rate of rape, including statutory rape, especially compared to muslims and catholic priests. I would say they are on par with white protestants.

      White is defined as “White, European, and of Christian ancestry.” All three criteria must be met to be considered “White”. Muslims, jews, Spanish conversos, hindus, pakistanis, orientals, negroes, mestizos, are not “White”.
