Largely White Audience Turns Out to Hear Rand Paul Speak at African-American Outreach Event

Amanda Terkel, Huffington Post, December 9, 2013

The Michigan Republican Party is seeking to increase its visibility in Democratic- and minority-heavy Detroit, and last week, it brought Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) to the city to open the party’s African-American Engagement Office. But if anything, the launch event put into stark relief just how much work the GOP has to do, when a largely white audience turned out to hear the senator speak.

Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus has said that attracting more minorities to the GOP is crucial for the party’s future. He visited Michigan last month, hired radio personality Wayne Bradley to head the African-American Engagement effort in the state and launched the Michigan Black Advisory Council.

Paul initially spoke at the new African-American Engagement Office on Livernois Avenue in Detroit for about four minutes on Friday. According to the progressive site Eclectablog, “The seats in the tiny space were filled with well-dressed supporters, most of whom were African-American.”

“Today’s opening of this office is the beginning of a new Republican Party,” Paul said. “This is going to be a Republican Party that is in big cities and small cities, in the countryside, in the city. It’s going to be about bringing a message that is popular no matter where you’re from, whether you’re rich or poor, whether you’re black, white or brown.”

Paul then went to a larger grassroots event at the Grace Bible Chapel, where there were protesters from the civil rights group National Action Network outside. The online invitation said the event was intended to “celebrate the opening of our African-American Engagement Office in Detroit.”

Detroit is approximately 83 percent African-American.

the last republican to carry a majority of the black vote was probably lincoln

    • Andy

No, after the Civil War northern abolitionists went south, enrolled black voters en masse, and gave the states Republican governments while former confederates couldn’t vote yet.

    • JTK

Last Republican who won majority of Black votes was Hoover in 1932. In 1932 FDR got only 23 percent of Black votes. FDR won anyway. The 180 degrees reverse started with 1936 election. Republicans never got more that a third of Black votes ever since.

    • NeanderthalDNA

The Repugnants would do better to go for the White vote and a sprinkling of high achieving “others” by championing meritocracy. In the US this means White regardless of non-White or debatably White exceptions, a la Engleman’s exotic obsession. The cream rises to the top while the dregs sink to the bottom and in North America the cream is White. A new man, White.
There are still enough Whites and Republican ideology should recognize this.
In terms of our people, regardless of politics, we need to form a phalanx.

  • D.B. Cooper

Reince Priebus. Remember who this tool is. He is why I will be voting democrat until his kind are out of office.

    • Katherine McChesney

I’ll vote other than Republican but I have a degree of self-respect and I would never give a Democrat my vote.

      • D.B. Cooper

You must get rid of the CAUSE before you work on the RESULT. These fake republicans are by far much more dangerous than the typical democrat.

      • IstvanIN

If there were only a third major party so we didn’t waste out votes. I voted for Pat Buchanan in 2000. Now I vote for the least obnoxious.

    • Andy

I don’t know. Extra democrat votes might just give them the idea they should be heading further left. Losing their votes to a party that’s further right than republicans wouldn’t be as likely to give them the wrong idea.

      • If the GOP goes further left that would disenfranchise the right who would possibly form a new party while the GOP died out. Of course, the GOP is pretty far to the left today and there’s no viable 3rd party, so I could be wrong.

  • bigone4u

Remember the black females spouting ebonics,”Obamaz gonna buys me a phone, buys my gas, and payz my rent.” Unless the Republicans want to up the ante to appeal to her, “Rand Paulz gonna do all dat and buyz me a big screen TV too,” then Republicans are going to lose even more of the whites they’ve already lost. One solution to cheap pandering like this would be to deny the vote to anyone who does not pay federal income tax.

  • JohnEngelman

One should fish where the fish bite.

    • blight14

Hence the reason ‘racial profiling’ is such a great idea!

      • JohnEngelman

Absolutely. If young black men do not want to be treated like criminals, they should stop committing all those crimes.

  • IstvanIN

Fools, insane, naive, treasonous, I am out of words for Republicans.

    • Homo_Occidentalis

You only need two words to describe them adequately: controlled opposition.

  • Truthseeker

Certain messages just don’t tend to resonate with certain people. What’s so hard about this?

  • Spartacus

You wanna fix Detroit ? First you have to nuke it.

    • NeanderthalDNA

Settle it with tough White Afrikaaner peckerwoods.

      • Alexandra1973

Trade. Send Detroit’s blacks to South Africa and bring the Afrikaaners to Detroit. Within a few years’ time, Detroit would be a nice city again.

  • NeanderthalDNA

Based on that pic the blacks really are into this Rand Paul fella…

    • bilderbuster

Was that all the republicans left in Detroit or did they have to bus both of them in?

      • NeanderthalDNA

I’m more likely to go with B.

  • Puggg

    It isn’t going to work.

It was never going to work.

If you define “work” as actually attracting black voters and making black people better.

That’s because in today’s sick society, all that matters is if you feel good about yourself, if your self-esteem is sufficiently high.

And if that’s the lens you’re looking through, then Rand Paul and all these white people going to a meeting about black outreach were a smashing success.

Because all involved got to feel good about themselves for being not racist.

The goofy part about it is that there are things that Republicans can easily do to get bigger percentages of black votes than they get now, even though they would still be landslide minority margins. But whatever Rand Paul is trying to sell, won’t work.

    Bunch of losers.

  • Bobbala

    You can’t fix stupid.

  • borogirl54

The only blacks that Republican party will attract are upwardly mobile, conservative blacks who are ashamed by the ghetto trash that get most of the attention from the media and the political parties.

    • IstvanIN

They aren’t worried about getting his vote any more than they are worried about getting ours.

    • Non Humans

Which channels are you watching? Media.. covering ghetto nonhumans? Since when?

    • bilderbuster

Both of them are already republicans.

  • Eddie Lutz

Dear Senator Quixote — Blacks do not like whites. Blacks do not share the values of whites. Blacks are not shamed by the things that shame whites. If you really want to change things for the better, you start by federally funding abortion for low-income, disadvantaged Americans and you eliminate welfare benefits that reward people for having more children. Next, you turn your attention to the other problem minorities by pulling our troops out of Europe and the Middle East and reassigning them to our southern border. You change legal immigration so that we only accept skilled immigrants with at least $10K in cash. And you eliminate the anchor baby rule. Do these things and the white population will increase while the unproductive races decline. All will be better off.

    • Jackryanvb

Eddie, many of these things are being done in subtle ways. The Black underclass birth rates are way down since the 1970s. A college education for Black women pretty much guarantees no children. How many children does Oprah have?

      • Alexandra1973

I think she had one when she was in her early teens but it died.

    • Jack Burton

That would just slow down non-White immigration, it’s not a solution.

We’re past the tipping point, our population is already too non-White. What is required now is much more than just immigration restriction. What we need to return to traditional White American would require so much aggressive reform it’s politically impossible. The only way out is through secession. We must have our own ethnostate where our political policies are for our best interests and not dictated to us by passive-aggressive, anti-White liberals and Jews.

  • Tim_in_Indiana

“Today’s opening of this office is the beginning of a new Republican Party,” Paul said.

The Republican Party will never give up trying to repeal the law of gravity (and deny other laws of nature), will they? Their whole party is crashing down around them and they still insist everything’s fine, or soon will be.

  • Eagle_Eyed

Yes Rand is a pathetic panderer. But the bigger truth is that he is popular among moderately conservative whites who have implicitly white small-government political views. This is why I argue the GOP must be reformed instead of abandoned. The vast majority of our deracinated brethren will never vote third party, but will still vote for their (white) interests even in less-than-perfect candidates.

  • drattastic

How do Republicans plan on outgifting Democrats? Because that’s the only way blacks vote Republican in any real numbers. Gimmedats only understand handouts. They may sway a few thoughtful blacks but a few is all.

  • I’d rather sit home on election day playing video games than vote for these clowns.

    • Alexandra1973

That’s pretty much what I do…playing with my lily-white neighborhoods in Sims 3.

  • BernieGoetzFan

The people in the crowd are not “largely white.” They are all-white. There is nothing that Paul can offer them.

  • MBlanc46

Paul needs to plan his appearances more carefully. Surely he could have found–or bought–enough blacks to have at least created the illusion that blacks are listening to him. The whole thing is a PR move in any case.

  • [Guest]

The left owns minorities because it gives them money and special preferences through the force of the federal government. What do Republicans have to offer that can compete with that?

    • Jackryanvb

They can offer to pander, look scared. Blacks lie to see Whites pander, apologize, look scared.

  • Homo_Occidentalis

The vast majority of blacks are lactose intolerant. I don’t think “free cheese” would be too enticing. The massive importation of non-whites in recent decades must be bad for the dairy industry.

    • Non Humans

They wouldnt notice “Cheese”, but only the part that is important to nonhumans… “Free”.

    • IstvanIN

The vast majority? I would think that, in the US, white-admixture would have solved a great deal of that. Plus there are some African tribes that heard cattle.

      • robinbishop34

        Free kool-aid then.

        • IstvanIN

purple, it has to be purple.

    • bilderbuster

Free cheese for nachos & tacos encouraged the Mexicans.

  • Rhialto

Nobody can predict the future, but I cannot believe that the Repubs can compete for the Minority/Liberal/Feminist vote against the Democrats. The most the Repubs can achieve is to pick up enough moderate White and Minority vote to be a major force in American politics. This may be the case for the next few election cycles.

I think the best and only hope for a Republican party would be the fracturing of the Democrats into several antagonistic parties. I do not think this likely in the next two decades, but in crazy America anything is possible.

  • fuzzypook

He should have offered them free phones for showing up.

  • Budd Smith

A small fraction of White Republicans became Libertarian. Maybe one in a million black Democrats will become Libertarian. Since there are only about 600,000 blacks in Detroit, I wouldn’t expect to see many Rand Paul t-shirts in Detroit.

    • Jackryanvb

Libertarians are a small race denying cult, this cult only seems to attract Whites, but these White cult members insist that this cult is the one truth that will save the world, especially save poor, criminally prone Blacks.

The Liberal Left media likes to promote Libertarians as the only socially acceptable “conservative” alternative to political correct cultural Marxism. The Liberal Left MSM, political-academic establishment also likes it when the GOP nominates a pandering Libertarian Vice President nominee like Paul Ryan and Jack Kemp as these Libertarians are sure fire losers – Paul Ryan even lost his own state of Wisconsin, but he ‘s not too depressed about losing as he’s been working hard with Lib Dem Minority leaders like Chicago’s Rep. Gutierrez to pass immigration “reform” /amnesty.

  • WR_the_realist

The Republicans try desperately hard to get votes from racial and ethnic groups that will never give them more than 20% of the vote — 10% in the case of blacks. Meanwhile they do everything they can to screw over the one group that will vote for them — white people.

  • Berkeley Guy

How many look bored and/or are paying attention to their smartphones?

Here in Berkeley, people smiled in a knowing way, having a sixth sense for the straight white male with a straight nose type like me, when I showed up at the city hall to vote. They knew they would win the election just as they know that they own the SF Bay Area. Rand Paul or anyone else who supports self-sufficiency and smaller government will never win over a significant fraction of liberal voters.

    • itdoesnotmatter

Berkeley Guy, what you describe in your voting in Berkeley City anecdote is a good reason to vote by absentee ballot, which is what I do, living in an almost 100 percent Obama-bot region. I don’t trust the poll workers with my ballot. I have read that liberals working at polling stations have been known to collect and change ballots at the end of the day.

  • Rhialto

It occurred to me that the only non-Liberal agenda item that might appeal to the Black Detroiters is immigration restriction and reduction. Many Blacks fear and resent these invaders, and keeping them out of Detroit and out of America might gain some traction.

Of course no Republican with Presidential hopes would use such a strategy, she or he would much rather lose.

  • NorthernWind

The Republican Party is run by such idiots that it’s hard to believe.

    • Jack Burton

Not when you look at his and his father’s political history. They received a lot of backlash from liberals and blacks calling him and his father racist. This whole stunt is really just for PR and to try and deflect accusations of racism, he knows blacks don’t care about his politics.

  • JohnEngelman

When he is not putting that foot in his mouth.

  • JohnEngelman

In 1964 Lyndon Johnson defeated Barry Goldwater with over 60 percent of the vote. The Democrats won two to one majorities in both houses of Congress. The Republicans recovered from that and came to dominate the United States because the civil rights legislation and the War on Poverty were followed by five years of black ghetto rioting and more durable increases in black crime and illegitimacy. There was virtually no improvement in black academic performance, which had always been inferior to white and Asian academic performance.

In the United States the white working class has become a staunch Republican constituency. When I ask a white blue collar worker why he votes Republican he does not complain that the rich are being ruined by taxation, that labor unions force corporations to locate in low wage countries, and that private industry is being strangled by government regulations.

He complains about black crime, affirmative action, forced school busing, and how the welfare system uses his tax money to encourage unmarried black women to have illegitimate children who grow up to become just as useless as she is and just as dangerous as her fly by night lovers.

Race wrecked liberalism. Race will wreck the Republican Party unless Republicans understand why the Democratic New Deal coalition fell apart.

There is no point in Republicans trying to win the black vote until most blacks begin to perform and behave as well as most whites and Asians.

    • Fak_Zakaix

      This is a racist comment.

  • Jackryanvb

Can’t we get Rand Paul to speak in the new South Africa? Get him to head a market based branch of the Amy Biehl Foundation?

Love to see the latest Jack Kemp incarnation In a canibal’s pot.

  • Alexandra1973

I think what he’s saying is that in order to survive the GOP will basically sell out.

I say there’s not a dime’s worth of difference between the “two” parties. What we have, at least at the national level, is a duopoly.

  • Puggg

Some people might disagree with that idea that Ron Paul was once a genuine race realist.

    • Jack Burton

He stated he clearly isn’t. However what they aren’t are anti-White liberals. They just believe in self-determination and freedom of association.

Modern liberals hate that, they want to tell you that you must hire blacks, you don’t have the right to only hire Whites.

The problem is you can’t play nice with hostile Jews and communists, it just doesn’t work. They’re constantly working against you, you can’t be neutral.

  • blight14

Some create, others defile and destroy…..I’ll let you put 2+2 on that one……(Think Haiti/Detroit)

  • NeanderthalDNA

I disagree. The Republicans need to get that “Republican Noise Machine” David Brock wrote about up and running again, but they have to change their song. Meritocracy meritocracy meritocracy…

Part of their current flailing uselessness is indeed a factor of changing ethnic and generational demographics, but part of their problem is they have a broken noise machine blaring out stale, discredited grist – discredited partly by some of the less than stellar decisions and practices of the last pack of hubristic monstrosities.

But see my post above regarding this if interested.

David Brock is an interesting fellow, is he not?

  • crockadoodle6

To me, as a white 8th generation American, the idea of the United States has lost it’s magic. The office of the President now seems like the central Housekeeping Office at a Motel 6, and the FBI as an arm of justice is more like a cross between a leprechaun and a pair of leather pants. The Supreme Court has no moral authority and is no different than the corrupt congress, which is just a union-in-training….Putin 2016

  • Pro_Whitey

Rand Paul, you so crazy! As if blacks would show up to hear him speak.

    • Jack Burton

Apparently the vast majority of blacks showed up to protest him. Why the hell are they protesting him?? LOL.

“He wants us to what?! Be more individualistic, independent and conservative?? Oh unt-unh, he’s trippin’! Imma protest dat!”

  • withcaution

I love me some “global outsourcing” i.e. healthy competition. I remember the crap Detroit “union made” crap that we were producing in the 70’s and 80’s. and really still are. I remember being refused a skills trades job at GM because my perfect aptitude score was bettered by 25% bonus votes for diversity applicants and another 10% if they came from the union. In other words, “D”: scores were hired before me. Competition is great and it allows me to shop where I want and with whom I want. F you and all your controlled economy and your “union brotherhood” that demands some UAW get 14 bucks an hour to protect the old fat cats 28 bucks an hour.

  • JohnEngelman

    What you say is true.

Unfortunately, liberals have also been in denial about the reality of black crime.
