Tech Industry Fights to Keep EEO Data Secret: What Are Companies Hiding?

The tech industry is going to great lengths to keep its lack of diversity a secret.

A multiyear investigation by Mike Swift of the San Jose Mercury News has found that not only do Silicon Valley’s biggest companies refuse to share their diversity data, but they have also fought to keep their information under wraps.

Swift sought diversity information from 15 of Silicon Valley’s biggest players. After an 18-month battle with the newspaper, only five disclosed EE0-1 information. And in a follow-up investigation by CNN, only three out of 20 companies voluntarily provided their EEO-1 data: Dell (No. 37 in the DiversityInc Top 50), Ingram Micro and Intel.

Although the companies cited “competitive information,” John Sims, a law professor at the University of the Pacific and an expert in Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) law, told the Mercury News that objections from companies such as Google and Apple were “absurd.”

When the information that was gathered is analyzed, it paints a picture of declining diversity among Silicon Valley’s big tech companies. Even though the companies analyzed grew in numbers between 2000 and 2008 (a 16 percent growth in the workforce), the percentages of Blacks, Latinos and women in their ranks all dropped.

Despite making up the majority of the population in Silicon Valley, women went from 37 percent of the workforce in 1999 to 33 percent in 2005. The number of Black employees dropped by 16 percent in the half-decade to start the century, while the share of Latino workers fell by 11 percent.

The same declines were seen in management-level positions. Only about 300 of 6,000 managers were Black or Latino, a 20 percent drop over five years. {snip}


Every year, companies with more than 100 employees are required to file an EEO-1 report with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The report is a simple, one-page form that lists employees by their self-identified race and gender.

While the data is officially listed as confidential by the government, companies do have the option to publicly share their EEO-1 data. {snip}


Many of the companies, based in an area with a population of more than 4 million people, declined to provide the information. Six companies went so far as to file lawsuits to block the requests, claiming that sharing the information would give competitors an insight into their business practices and potentially hurt the company.


Google publicized its donation of more than $8 million in money and equipment in late 2009 to help candidates from underrepresented groups find work in the tech industry (Google had $23 billion in gross revenues that year), yet the company still fought to keep its own diversity data a secret.  “We don’t release this information for competitive reasons,” a spokeswoman said.

A judge agreed, allowing industry giants Google, Apple, Yahoo!, Oracle and Applied Materials to withhold their employment data. {snip}

    I think they’re covering up, but I don’t think they’re covering up because they have a lack of diversity. I think they’re trying to cover up all the Indians and Asians that work for them, and trying to cover up how few white people work at these firms.

    All of these powerful companies, and even they quiver at the thought of offending ethnic groups incapable of their own Silicon Valleys. Perhaps a more fitting name for that area would be Silicone Valley, as in what they use for fake boobs.

    They want to keep their H1-B usage secret, because they will start getting swarmed with lawsuits filed by Americans who could do those jobs but weren’t allowed the opportunity to because the company didn’t take reasonable steps to hire a US citizen first.

            By far the kindest and ablest nurse in my hospital ward two years ago was a Romanian (but then we were both whites).

            I have come across several efficient (though also quite European-looking) medical people from south Asia in our “National” Health Service, and one frankly useless (white) Austrian, among our unduly large proportion of foreign doctors. There have also been some hair-raising scandals involving non-white personnel.

            Our exchange on Romanian and Bulgarian migrants next year could not be developed on another thread which has been closed for further comment.

        Lawrence Summers who was the leading candidate, and Janet Yellen who is now the front runner just happen to share that characteristic that only 2.14% of the US has.

          It’s been getting harder to find white doctors for the last 20 years or more. There are lots of Hindus who have taken up medicine. I wonder if under Obamacare you can be forced to accept a black doctor.

            Last month, thinking increased mitral valve dysfunction, consulted my cardio for shortness of breath on the mildest of exertion.

            After clearing cardiac status, cardio ordered stat blood work. At 1900 hrs, his urgent call insisting on immediate admit to the E.R. for infusion of two units of packed cells. Blood work revealed a “panic level” hemoglobin at 6.8, [for females, l2 considered normal].

            All night in the E.R., repeat blood work with type and x-match, CT scan, gastroscopy, colonoscopy, chest films, 2 units of A Negative blood would have cost me a fortune were private pay the only option.

            All exams were negative.

            The etiology I researched, discovered on my own: Studies have demonstrated that RX’d proton pump inhibitors, i.e. Prilosec, result in severe anemia in a significant number of individuals.

            I discontinued Prilosec, am dosing with OTC Folate, B complex, B12, Vit D, low dose Vit. C, and a high Fe diet.
            Hgb now at 12, in spite of not taking oral or I.V. Fe, which I cannot tolerate.
            The belabored point: one moment, well and happy, the next moment, a spiral into the jaws of the medical non-care industry, bankruptcy and a second mortgage if no safety net of insurance.

    LACK of diversity? Isn’t it funny that DiversityInc assumes that the nation’s most SUCCESSFUL tech companies are suffering from a LACK of diversity!

    If diversity is really our “strength” then doesn’t it stand to reason that the most successful companies would have the HIGHEST diversity? Yet, DiversityInc is certain that the tech companies are keeping their diversity figures a secret because they’re suffering from a lack of diversity.

    Something is not quite right here! Could it possibly be that DiversityInc knows that diversity is NOT a “strength” at all and therefore it must be enforced by the whip?

    Soviet workers were always pushed to increase the production whether in the farm or the factory. Once they achieved the quota, they were rewarded… with higher quotas.

    Same here, we can never do enough until all White christian heterosexual males are castrated or killed.

    The state is dictating who you can hire and who you can’t (White male citizens).

    Blacks and Latinos don’t have the brain power to do the work of designing sophisticated computer software and hardware. Many of these companies are owned by whites or Jews, with whites and Jews in positions at the top (e.g.,Jew Marissa Mayer at Yahoo), white middle managers, and with vast armies of Hindu drones doing the grunt work. The industry is too competitive to hire white males who won’t work for pennies on the dollar the way Hindus will. Blacks and Latinos won’t work cheap either, but in any case usually can’t justify a salary of even pennies on the dollar. Notice that a judge allows them to keep their dirty little secrets.

        I first read that Marissa Mayer is Jewish on the Business Insider website and took their word for it. Looking up the google search term “marissa mayer jew” just now, I see that there are quite a lot of websites stating she is Jewish. Anyway, Zuckerberg and many others are Jewish, the point being that blacks, latinos, and Hindus are generally not in the top echelon, while whites and Jews are.

      The overwhelming majority of blacks have no clue what it is white people do, whether software programming, gene sequencing, or just budget balancing. It’s all white man juju. They do believe however that if they are *given* the trappings of white success, the nice home, the nice car, the corner office, that they will somehow also acquire the juju – as if it is the trappings of success that created the success. We must constantly remind ourselves that the average adult black has the intellect of an average eleven year old white child. He can mimic what he sees the white adults doing, but hasn’t the depth of cognition to understand that it all follows the value of the work performed as determined by the (somewhat) free market.       What is crazy is that Indians have a lower average IQ than American blacks!

      When I was in Barcelona last year, there were Indians in the streets at night. They were all selling beers (but really drugs). They were the lowest of the low in Spain. Not at all the kind of Indian that comes to America to work. We are obviously getting a selective population of them coming here.

      But I can tell you that very VERY few indian programmers are any good. They lack imagination, and will spin the wheels of most projects they are given. They must be told very specifically what to make, and they will not offer any ideas or suggestions for improvement.

      It is really sad for our economy and American industry that they are replacing talented imaginative Americans with this incredibly inferior population of programmers.

        Certainly the average Indian immigrant has higher IQ than the average IQ among Asian Indians overall. This is in sharp contrast to Mexico — we’re getting Indian college graduates and Mexican peasants. The educated Mexicans can generally do okay in Mexico so stay home. So while the average IQ of Mexicans overall is no lower than the average IQ of Asian Indians, we have Mexican lawn care workers and Indian programmers.

        I’ve known some very intelligent Asian Indians, but they were academic researchers, not programmers. Among the Asian Indian programmers I’ve known, they tend to be mediocre to average. Okay, for the most part, but not super stars. The reality is that there is an enormous range of productivity among programmers. But management doesn’t think that way. To them two programmers with the same buzz words in their resumes are equivalent, so you may as well hire the cheap one. Thus they hire all those H1-b workers.

    Once I had a one year computer contract with a prestigious high tech field in Silicone Valley. About fifteen computer programmers were hired temporarily for a software project. All of us were white. One programmer was hired for a permanent position, with health and retirement benefits. He was black.

    He also never completed a single assignment during the course of the entire year. It also did not matter. At the end of the year we had to look for another job again. I had to move seventy miles away. He kept his job.

    I once had a black ‘programmer’ report to me. He never did any work, unless I was literally standing over his shoulder. No matter how simple the task, if I gave him an hour, or a day or a week or a month, it wasn’t going to get done unless I asked him 5 times to do it.

    And most of the time, what he did was not done well and needed to be fixed or redone by someone else.

      When another company I worked for hired a black programmer I mentored him, not because I had been told to, but because I enjoy doing that.

      He told my boss. My boss thanked me and said, “It is my job to train the new employees, but I do not always have time. You make my job a lot easier.”

      That is the best think a boss can tell a subordinate.

      • I would never have helped him. When a company hires diversitards and pays them big salaries to play “dress-up”, I’m done there. I am absolutely not a “team-player” when it comes to Fourth-Worlders impersonating genuine engineers, and I have called them curry-eating n-words to their faces, in front of supervisors. It is the most fun when the faux “men” cry.

        “I’m going to give you the chance to apologize” said one boss.

        “I quit, and eff you, too. Take your project deadline and shove it.”

        The look on that suit’s face was priceless.

        When they called a week later to say they couldn’t find my lab notes, I explained that I’d had them at home and burned them the afternoon I quit.

        The best thing a boss can tell a former subordinate is “You were right all along.”

        If I ever return to chemistry, I will still quit on the spot if I am being jacked with. I already have the right to live in the US, and I paid off my mortgage back in 2004, so I don’t need any “stuff” from the suits.

    At another large employer, I worked with two black financial analysts; both pleasant enough and just a couple of years out of (some) college. The employer actually had to hold remedial writing and English grammar lessons for them. No one, outwardly, thought this was strange and, apparently, was not uncommon for black employees. These were $50K per year jobs in the south in 1992!

    The Tech industry is closely mimicking the federal contractor/AA guidelines. The AA guidelines require quotas–don’t let them tell you otherwise. And their quotas are purposely disproportionate i.e. the Black population in this country is 12.5%, but the federal contractor population is 20%. The EEOC is 50% Black.
    The same disproportion requirements exist with Asians, Hispanics, LGBT, Feminist, etc.
    Consequently, those in the ‘other’ category: straight, white, middle-aged, men are aggressively purged with regularity. It’s America’s dirty little secret.

    This article and survey was never ready for prime time. 20 companies queried and 5 participated? And you get numbers like women managers dropping from 28% to 26%–in 5 companies? And they call that data and analysis?

    The reason why the EEOC and OFCCP had remained silent the whole time is because the big tech picture is a reverse discrimination nightmare.

    And they get all the data–every year. And all you heard from them was “crickets”. Get it?
