Up to 27 Million People Living in Slavery: US

Jo Biddle, Yahoo! News, June 20, 2012

Up to 27 million people are living in slavery around the world, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton estimated as the US unveiled its annual report into human trafficking.

But the report showed that as governments become more aware of the issue, instigating tough new laws and programs to help victims, progress is being made in wiping out what it called the “scourge of trafficking.”

“The end of legal slavery in the United States and in other countries around the world has not, unfortunately, meant the end of slavery,” said Clinton.

“Today it is estimated as many as 27 million people around the world are victims of modern slavery, what we sometimes call trafficking in persons,” she said at the unveiling of the report at the State Department.

“Those victims of modern slavery are women and men, girls and boys, and their stories remind us of the kind of inhumane treatment we are capable of as human beings,” said Clinton.

As America prepares to mark the 150th anniversary of the proclamation of the emancipation of US slaves, people must reflect on “how much further we have to go to free all these 27 million victims,” Clinton added.

Myanmar was removed from the blacklist because the government “took a number of unprecedented steps to address forced labor and the conscription of child soldiers; these steps amount to a credible commitment to undertake anti-trafficking reforms over the coming year,” the report said.

Syria however fell onto the blacklist for the first time, in a move which could cut off any US aid and make it harder to get US backing for funds from organizations like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

“The government of Syria does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and is not making significant efforts to do so,” the 2012 Trafficking in Persons report said.

Among the 16 other countries on the blacklist were Algeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Libya, North Korea and Saudi Arabia.

Kenya slipped down onto the watchlist for the first time in five years, while Nigeria lost its place on tier 1, moving down a notch as the report highlighted that women and children were forced into labor and sex trafficking.

But Clinton hailed the fact that a total of 29 countries had been upgraded to a higher ranking, “which means that their governments are taking the right steps.”

Want to see an American liberal’s head explode? Ask him this –

Which is the bigger outrage – that there were about 4 million slaves in the U.S. in 1860 or that there are 27 million slaves in the world today?

    • “African-Americans were enslaved by blacks and freed by White-Americans”

      • Sheila Dinehart

dang…that is true…at the cost of what?…at least a half million white men (can’t leave out the dead Confederates either because of so many black CSA soldiers)…American white men (and Irish and German on the Union side)…you gotta wonder where is the respect for that… the descendants of those men could file collective law suits against organizations like the NAACP and other groups and organizations or all of them where members are descendants of African American slaves for reparations…of course it can be done…such irony.

  • The__Bobster

Does this include the Ukrainian women who are being kidnapped by White slavery rings?

    • Of course not. According to the media, whites are never slaves, whites aren’t preyed upon by non-whites, there is no such thing as white genocide (even in South Africa) and to even suggest one of these things is “racist”

    • WhitesRdumb

Where are they taking these white woman. It couldn’t be that **** hole in the south east corner of the Mediterranean Sea.

Yes, but only until they end up in Israeli brothels…

      • True, the slave trade is run from Israel.

“So why are whites the only ones made to feel guilty for slavery?”

Because we’re the only race that has a substantial portion who are foolish enough to feel guilty.

If you told the members of any other race that they should pay reparations money because their ancestors owned slaves they would (correctly) laugh in your face.

I think it would be like telling the Chinese people in China that China should choose to have African leadership to prove to the world that China isn’t racist.  The Chinese people know that it would really be showing the world that China is stupid.

    • Heavenawaits

Exactly.  no other races feels bad for their past.  Muslims don’t feel bad.  Africans don’t feel bad.  The Chinese don’t.  The Japanese don’t.  Etc, etc, etc.

  • I believe part of this “slavery” is play acting.  I’ll spell it out for you like this:

White do gooder comes along and buys the freedom of slaves.  So if you want to make some money, pretend to be a slave owner, get some of your friends to be slaves, and eventually, some white liberal or white fundagelical Christian dweeb will give you money to “free” them.  Just make sure all your pretend slaves get a cut of that money.

  • Rocky Bass,

You sir have nailed it. Slavery in the US is at EPIDEMIC proportions RIGHT NOW!  Obongo is hell bent on making this number as big as possible as fast as possible!
Obama would surely be better suited to being King back in his own country.

Blacks tend to be very sensitive about the slavery issue from 150 years ago, but they vote for slavery to the government at a rate of 90% or better today.  If a white person expresses a preference not to live under a system of slavery to the government (marxism), he or she is considered to be “racist”.

  • You’d make them play professional sports and keep their earnings! Hmmm, maybe I should buy a Nigerian sprinter…

  • Audieleon

We are all slaves to corporate America.

  • Whites living in america today can only feel bad about the institution of slavery, if :
1-They have a negative view of slavery AND
2-They assume that they are enjoying the benefits of historical slavery in Material Wealth or an Unmerited Social/polical status due to skin color. or
3-They define themselves by their relationship to those who practiced slavery.

This is the description of a thoughtful  well informed individual. A civilized person, if you will.

  • Why does the headline read: “Up to 27 Million People Living in Slavery: US”?

Why did they tack on US at the end, linking on-going slavery with the US?

Is this a psychological trick to make people unconsciously believe that 27 million people are slaves in the US?

I wouldn’t waste my time with liberals.  They are either too emotional or too immature or too condescending and manipulating to argue with.  I don’t have conversations with liberals nor do I discuss racial issues with blacks, being that they will never see things the way we do.  Don’t waste your time with liberals or blacks in regards to racial issues.  you’d be better off trying to teach your dog algebra.

    • HenryHolliday

I only engage in real debate with people who are basically sensible, but have succumbed to liberal brainwashing in some areas.  I do engage in argument with full blown liberals, but only because they get enraged, and I don’t.  All that anger drains energy and interferes with what little rational thinking liberals are capable of.  Psychological warfare has its place.  And I admit. it’s amusing to see the folks that always accuse conservatives of being violent warmongers resort to personal insults and direct or indirect threats of violence when words fail them, which doesn’t take long.

  • Dave4088

Black supremacists and white liberals will retort that the world “learned” the practice of slavery from wicked, colonialist whites.    So whites are still guilty as charged and must give away their wealth and women to the third world as penance.

  • JuneSondra65

This report is totally WRONG. There are actually 100s of millions of slaves in the world. Virtually every muslim woman is a slave to either her abusive husband or her father. She is little more than a chattel than is sold or bartered as a bride and then held in captivity by her husband/master.  As a child she is often sexually abused, beaten or even subjected to genital mutilation. As an adult she is often locked away and serves as little more than a servant and breeding stock for little fanatics.

There was an interesting comment in the news the other day about Egypt. Perhaps 40% of Egyptian women are illiterate, not because of poverty but because their families will not allow them to lead to read. Look at Afghanistan where schools for girls are bombed, the students poisoned or have acid thrown in their faces and because of the mental illness that some call a religion.

These poor people really are slaves.

  • Sheila Dinehart

So why are whites the only ones made to feel guilty for slavery?

    No kidding…

I guess one of the reasons has to do with the fact that America is the richest nation on earth so the thinking is that America became a wealthy country on the backs of slaves…but is that really true?  America had African Slavery trade later than the Brits, Dutch, and French, Spanish and the Arabs had African Slavery first…well no, the Africans owned other Africans first but America had slavery for the shortest period of time all things considered…the most humane as well.  The old trick is to find a scape goat, so America (white skin privilege covers western civ get it?…white skin of England, France, the Dutch and Spain…and even the nonwhite skin of the Arabs have to pay too which is part of the reason things are broken up over there) gets to be the scape goat by which the world realizes the redistribution of wealth vis spreading democracy all over the world…that’s like manifest destiny, the spreading of christianity…always spreading something that backfires.

  • HenryHolliday

Could you expound on that? I’m not being sarcastic.

  • Willowville

Why don’t you do something for the American people instead of spending our money to make the world hate us?  We can’t even pay our schoolteachers.

  • Deb89919413

    Very well said.
