Survey: 62% Support Arab Emigration

Yael Teff, Jerusalem Post, May 9, 2006

Roughly 62% support the demand that Israel should encourage Arab emigration from Israel to other countries, while 29% believe that there should be a Jewish majority for decisions deemed crucial to the state, a new survey published by the Israel Democracy Instituteon on Tuesday showed.

In response to the statistics regarding Arab emigration, Muhamad Barakeh (Hadash) told the The Jerusalem Post that he was not surprised by the survey’s findings, and saw them as a result of a racist policy aimed at the Arab population — a policy that had infiltrated all levels of education. He added that these sorts of racist mannerisms were already deeply inculcated in Israeli institutions as well as the Israeli street.

Barakeh had initiated a special hearing in the Knesset on the subject of racism in light of these dangerous and worrying findings. The hearing had been planned to include representatives of the Arab community and its institutions.

MK Ahmed Tibi (United Arab List) commented: “It (the survey) proves once and for all the inherent racism in Israeli society.”

MK Taleb A-Sanah also responded to the report, saying “This is part of the ongoing regression of the Knesset and the further distancing of Arab MKs from the Israeli government.”

When asked about the relations between different groups, 26% answered that relations between religious and secular Jews were good, while only 14% answered that relations between Jews and Arabs were good.

It seems that Israelis are proud of who they are: 86% of participants feel proud that they are Israelis and 90% wish to live in Israel in the future, though only 69% feel that they are a part of Israel and its problems.
