A shooting by Senatobia Police that resulted in the death of a 1-year-old in a Walmart parking lot in June has been ruled “justified” after a review by the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.

Attorney Ben Crump, representing Wiley’s family, issued the following statement in response to the ruling:

“A 1-year-old baby was shot and killed by a police officer, and now the state of Mississippi says that use of force was justified. How can anyone accept that conclusion when Kohen’s family and the public still have not been allowed to see the body-camera footage? This is a department whose chief was fired after reports of racial slurs in his text messages, and whose officer faced a complaint alleging a racially offensive remark two days before he shot Kohen. If the footage supports the state’s decision, release it. We will not stop fighting until this family gets the truth.”

According to MBI, on June 14, law enforcement officers responded to a shoplifting call at the Walmart on U.S. 51 in Senatobia.

Investigators said officers encountered two adults and a juvenile child who were seen fleeing the store and getting into a vehicle.

Authorities said officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver drove in the direction of officers and nearly struck one of them.

An officer then fired their weapon, according to MBI, and the vehicle fled the scene.
