US Military: White Males Need Not Apply

Rod Dreher, Substack, July 18, 2023

I retweeted this last night, saying that the US Military is signaling to white men that they are not wanted. Can you imagine the sh*tstorm that would (reasonably!) arise if a colonel said that the military should stop hiring or promoting black men, or Latinos, or women, because they all think alike? But as a middle-aged white man, he can get away with saying that. He can also get away with saying it because that kind of bigotry is both accepted and celebrated by our ruling class, including the Pentagon.

One of my Twitter followers agreed that what Col. Wootan said was wrong, but pointed out that the USAF Civil Air Patrol is not a big deal. Well, Mark Wootan had a distinguished and consequential military career prior to this appointment, but okay, I get that. But am not comforted. Col. Wootan, having worked at senior levels for most of his career, has internalized the new doctrine of the Armed Forces. Read this:

Army Majors currently attending ILE (intermediate level education) at the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth are being taught that only the dominant racial group can be racist (whites), and all other ethnicities are simply prejudiced in their actions. The course is also teaching that gender is a social construct while sex is a biological category given at birth. According to students going through the course right now, an individual who is white and male is not allowed to feel like someone is racist or sexist towards them because they’re in the majority.

… Dr. Angela Riotto teaches the course which is titled “Race and Gender in U.S. Military History.” The course description states, “An effective military only functions under the principles of equality and inclusion. Manpower policy regarding inclusion and equality has only changed when forced to by the necessities of war or from outside social and political influence. This course will examine the history of service of minority groups and women in the U.S. Military, major amendments to manpower policy, and historic problems with presenting a less than unified force.”

One of the course vignettes covers the definitions for prejudice, racism, gender and sex. According to the slide, “racism is a complex system of beliefs and behaviors that result in the oppression of people of color and benefit the dominant group.”

{snip} These lies — this malicious, bigoted, un-American ideology — has now been accepted and is taught by the US military to its leadership class. If you doubt it, read this address that Thomas Spoehr of the Heritage Foundation gave last year about wokeness in the military. He offers a number of examples. Excerpt:

The Biden administration’s Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Michael Gilday, decided last year to add Ibram X. Kendi’s book, How to Be an Antiracist—one of the leading sourcebooks on critical race theory—to his list of recommended readings. To give an idea of how radical Kendi’s book is, one of its famous (or infamous) arguments is that “Capitalism is essentially racist,” and that “to truly be antiracist, you also have to be truly anticapitalist.”

{snip}

Indeed, last year a senior officer in the U.S. Space Force, Lt. Col. Matthew Lohmeier, was removed from command for publicly describing the role of critical race theory in indoctrinating servicemembers at his installation. And just this summer, multiple media outlets reported on training materials on the problems of “whiteness” obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. One training slide read: “In order to understand racial inequality and slavery, it is first necessary to address whiteness.”

Congressmen have obtained curricular materials from West Point showing lectures titled “Understanding Whiteness and White Rage” and classroom slides labeled “White Power at West Point.”

Why would a white person, especially a white male, join the service when he has every reason to believe that he will be at a disadvantage when it comes to promotions because of the color of his skin, and his sex? {snip}

{snip}

The military today remains majority white (between 50 and 60 percent) and overwhelmingly male (around 80 percent, though it varies between branches of the service). Additionally, though Generation Z — the generation from which the military is trying to recruit — is the most racially diverse in US history, it is still majority white. With males overwhelmingly more likely to serve than women, the US Military is openly telling the demographic group — white males — who will unavoidably make up the greatest number of recruits that they will be second-class citizens in the new woke military. You can dress it up in all kinds of ways to deny the ugly truth, but there it is. Col. Mark Wootan’s error, if error it was, was to lay it out bluntly.
