Video Reveals Fight over “Justice for Mike Brown” Shirts, Two Face Assault Charges

It happened October 18th, 2014 in the middle of the day.

Three different fights erupted on the parking lot of Reds BBQ at the corner of West Florissant and Canfield. It lasted such a long time that someone driving by had time to record it. It’s now resulted in assault charges that identify two of the people you can see in the fray.

When you slow down the video you can see a woman with a stick, now identified in court records as Latonya Ewings. She appears to swing at a man held on the ground. Court documents also identify Calvin Carter pinning down the victim. We had to blur part of the video because Carter’s pants were coming down. Prosecutors identify the man pinned, as Michael Brown’s cousin, Tony Petty, who reportedly identified Carter and Ewings.

According to a Ferguson police report, it’s a fight over t-shirts, which reportedly spread the message “Justice for Mike Brown.” The report says Michael Brown’s paternal step grandmother and another relative were selling the shirts, when several cars pulled up and 20-30 people jumped out, including Michael Brown’s Mother Lesley McSpadden. The report says McSpadden yelled ”you can’t sell this s%$&” and that she “then ran up and punched (step grandma).”

McSpadden does not face charges. Again, you don’t see her in the video. She’s only identified in the police report according to witnesses. Carter and Ewings face felony second degree assault charges.
