IC SGA Passes Bill to Create System to Report Microaggressions

Evan Popp, The Ithican, March 18, 2015

The Ithaca College Student Government Association passed a bill March 16 to create an online system to report microaggressions, which sponsors of the bill said will create a more conducive environment for victims to speak about microaggressions.

The bill, sponsored by Class of 2018 senator Angela Pradhan, calls for the implementation of a campus-wide online system to report microaggressions to “make Ithaca College a safer, more inclusive and diverse community for all students.”

Pradhan said the online system would fill what she sees as a lack of an adequate system to report microaggressions.

“I know a lot of senators are working on microaggression stuff within their respective schools, but I felt that there was a need for something to happen schoolwide,” Pradhan said. “And if there was a concrete way to document [microaggressions] online, it would provide students a way to kind of state what’s going on.”

The system would allow individuals reporting microaggressions to remain anonymous. However, junior Kyle James, vice president of communications and co-sponsor of the bill, said those reporting a microaggression would likely have to reveal their identity if they wanted to pursue any legal action.

James said in addition to a space to report the particular incident, the online system would track the demographics of those reporting microaggressions as well as those accused of committing them.

{snip}

She said the demographic information would be used as data regarding the issue of microaggressions. Currently, Pradhan said there is no data system tracking microaggressions at the college.

The bill does not currently state that the names of people accused of committing microaggressions will be reported. While Pradhan said she believes the names of alleged offenders should be reported, she said there could be possible legal barriers.

James said the college’s legal affairs representatives are looking into potential legal roadblocks regarding the online system. However, he said he is not sure exactly what parts of the bill are coming under legal scrutiny.

{snip}

Pradhan said the bill is not meant to be a cure-all solution to the issue of microaggressions. She said it is meant to work in tandem with bills the SGA has already passed to address microaggressions in the individual schools of the college. Class of 2015 senator Taj Harvey said this is one of the main reasons he supported the bill.

{snip}

Sophomore Joshua Kelly, senator-at-large, was the only SGA member to vote against the bill.

Kelly said he was taken back by mentions of taking legal action against people who commit microaggressions.

“The very definition of a microaggression is that it isn’t intended, so the very idea of taking legal action against somebody for not intending to say something that happened to be harmful is not my idea of living in a free society,” Kelly said.

  • Since a “microaggression” is a vague, nebulous invention, by sissies, for sissies, there can never be any real standard of proof.

    • Usually Much Calmer

That’s a feature for the ‘victim’, not a bug.

    • Cindy

Exactly. Everyone is keeping their mouths shut and being PC. And the sissies were like, “Oh, crap! How do I cry victim now?
So they had to come up with another way to find fault, ergo microaggressions.
They have vivid imaginations, I’ll give them that.

      • I wonder whether our routine mockery of them on this site is an uber-mondo-aggression. Any nominal “adult” so deliberately emotionally fragile deserves mockery, but even these dopes don’t really need to make the process so completely enjoyable.

I hope some of them read this.

        • Well M.C. Scott, I can see how you’ve accumulated 20,889 microagressions on Discus alone. At a very nominal and fair charge of $100 per microagression, that’s over 2 million $ you owe in penalties (not including interest).

Not to worry, you can be assured that your 2 million will be well spent, either bringing needed relief to the “Food Desert” which will undoubtedly spring up in Ferguson, MI, or by importing Somolians to Colorado, giving you the Diversity you so richly deserve, or perhaps by just providing medical care & birth incentives to Emilliano Heurta & his needy family of 19.

      • You nailed it Cindy!

    • RagnarDanneskjold57

I have a modest proposal. Flood this “campus wide online system” with thousands of examples of MINORITY micro-aggressions. If I were an accomplished programmer, I’m sure I could suggest a hundred other ways to overwhelm this computer site with garbage equivalent in impact to the dritt it is intended to disseminate. Any creative computer geeks out there?

      • John Smith

Do unto others before they do unto you.

      • Alden

All we need is the student password FYI Ithaca is like Sarah Lawrence, created as a place to store upper class girls between their debuts and marriage For middle class girls not eligible to be debutantes it served as a husband hunting ground place where they could meet upper upper class men the normally would not have .

It was established in Ithaca to sort of parasite off Cornell

This nothing new. It started in government work places within a year of LBJs war in poverty programs It was war in poverty programs that invaded government workplaces with sensitivity programs
In a few years the Ford Foundation and numerous others spread these programs to every workplace

Most if us have suffered through this garbage all our working lives. It won’t never end. After the last White is gone from every college and workplace the blacks, browns and tans will turn on each other

    • LHathaway

haha, we ‘civilize’ the brown and black men right under their noses . . And the important thing, they think it’s their own idea, morally superior creatures that they are . . .

    • Wing-nut.

My mere existence may possibly be a micro-aggression…

Must be my privilege kicking in again.

  • Does one need a microscope in order to spot a microaggression?

    • No. Just a chip on one’s shoulder.

      • Kenner

        A macrochip.

    • Fair Dinkum

No, just a malicious mind and a big imagination.

    • Charles Martel

      Just a microscopic brain

  • OT and related. The NYT reports that some Brown University students were so traumatized that there was a libertarian speaker on campus who was trying to deflate the “rape culture” witch hunt hysteria that the campus created a “safe space” for them:

The room was equipped with cookies, coloring books, bubbles, Play-Doh, calming music, pillows, blankets and a video of frolicking puppies, as well as students and staff members trained to deal with trauma.

It was said not so approvingly of recent generations that they never got out of high school, the way they act so clique-ish as adults. The millennials never got out of kindergarten.

    • Worse, it is now considered the duty of parents and any adult for that matter, to be careful not to harm the precious “self-esteem” of any young person. In the past, we were told it was not good to hit any child, so we ended corporal punishment. Now, it is considered just as bad to tell any child that he/she is “dumb”, “stupid”, “lazy”, or even not applying themselves. Yeah, yet another reason the Chinese are overtaking us.

      • On a positive note, most of the parents I know personally do discipline their little ones. Of course my circle of friends may not be representative of the US public at large and is heavily weighted towards those who collect ancient Roman coins.

Spare the rod & spoil the child is still a common phrase.

    • Dale McNamee

I read the article and all I could say of the students was: “poor wide babies poor wide kids… I wonder what you’re going to do when you leave your cocoon ?”

I also wonder if the parents who are footing the tuition approve of an extremely expebsive “playschool” ?

I’m happy & fortunate to have grown up knowing that my feelings would be hurt, that my self-esteem came from something great deep inside my character, and that I was expected to be an adult once I graduated high school…

      • You’re asking if the parents approved? The parents created these 19-year old kindergartners with the way they raised them. Even if the parents didn’t approve, it’s a bed they must sleep in because they made.

    • Somewhat aware of current business culture. US businesses are preparing for the neXt generation as if they’re some sort of super intuitive free thinking genuises. This group is described as against regular structure but are those who can design a city or the neXt gen supercomputer or web phenomenon on a small napkin with a crayon in 20″.

If not given a regular job, they’ll simply create their own global multi-conglamorates at a level of sophistication our current old brick & mortar generation cannot even fanthom. Somehow trillions of megadollars will be created but the method escapes me at present.

“microaggression” is a word and concept created by a psychiatrist, a black psychiatrist at that, figures.

    • Alden

Surprised he or she could put 2 such big words together

  • David Ashton

Same jargon again – “safe, inclusive, diverse” & “micro-aggression” – these mantras do not spring up accidentally, or even like poison mushrooms in the right climate.

  • MekongDelta69

    Next insane step – Picoaggression.

    Wusses. All pathetic wusses.

    • But at least it would be efficient. You can fit a trillion picoaggressions within the space of a plain ole regular aggression.

  • pcmustgo

OMg, this is horrifying totalitarian stuff.. and micro-aggression is a misnomer.

  • Mack0

Though crimes are here! The real intention of these types of restrictions are to stifle debate. The fools advocating for rules against micro-aggressions know this. The United States is over. Stick a fork in her, she’s done. Anyone with illusions the situation will get better needs to check their privilege.

    • Speedy Steve

      All politics is local, secede!

Congregate and then secede. Like minded individuals within our community are much to scattered.

  • NowhereTearsOfHonor

“Microaggression”? That’s a new one to me…good grief…I had to look it up:

    “Microaggression
is a form of unintended discrimination. It is depicted by the use of
known social norms of behavior and/or expression that, while without
conscious choice of the user, has the same effect as conscious, intended
discrimination.” (Now there’s a load of progressive bullcrap if I ever heard any)

  • Ella

I thought that there were campus rules already about porn via Internet and bullying. This is absurd! We have MORE rules and laws at a college probably more now than some nations!

  • LHathaway

Stop thinking small. Think ‘macroaggression’. Think White United Students on campus. What would they have to say? What would they do? Who knows, but Ithaca college won’t have diversity until it also sports White United Students on campus. I’m guessing, for Ithaca, sometimes diversity is just too much work . . .

    • Speedy Steve

Maybe the WUS acronym is a mistake!

Oh dear a black Ithaca female ” Senator ” raised her left eyebrow 1/ 200th of a micron when I entered the gym today. I called 911, the Dean, the DOJ and the FBI. I am anxiously awaiting the report and can’t continue my studies until this crisis is resolved and people are punished.
Blacks are antagonizing whites to the point, soon whites will demand reinstitution of Jim Crow laws or they will fight it out with the federal government with AK-47’s la 1776 !

My avatar, Andy Capp, explained to a copper why he had just bopped some poor sod into a heap on the sidewalk, insisting “I thought he was going to hit me, so I hit him back first”.

Seems to capture the spirit of the micro-aggressed permanent victim class. Prescient, too, for an early 1970’s comic strip.

Microaggression??? What about macroaggression? You can’t have a safe campus if you focus on micro instead of macro just as you can’t have a sound financial condition if you focus on saving micro (like $1) instead of saving macro (like $10000).

A college “education” isn’t worth it… Go to trade school or a 2 year school and get a certification…

It’s cheaper, less aggrivating, more seriously focused, and profitable !

It’s time to grow up and leave childhood/adolescence behind…

A guy passed me in the fast lane on the interstate at about 80 mph the other day. He was picking his nose and threw the booger out the window. I think this is the kind of “microaggressions” the thought police are looking for.

  • De Doc

How are these kids ever going to manage in real life once they leave the protective cocoon that is Ithaca College?

    • Simple: they will get jobs with state agencies and demand the “right” to anonymously harass people with impunity.

The left loves a police state.

My history classes skipped over the part where those black barbary coast pirates kidnapped 1.25 million of my people and worked them to death in mines and galleys, so I was denied elevated victimhood status and the benefits which go it. I want reparations and a big apology from everyone with black African ancestry.

Ithaca College: the tab excluding books and beer money.
    2015 – 2016 Undergraduate Cost of Attendance
    Tuition and Fees $40,658
    Room $7,972
    Board $6,702
Optional Health and Accident Insurance $1,155

It’s no small wonder that students who get accepted think that they are genius, and feel themselves unteachable. So they question everything instead. Many left-wing professors express disgust toward these rich idiots.

RAF bombing of the heavy water plant in Norway put a big dent in their A-bomb project, too.

    • The Norwegian resistance sank a ferry carrying the stuff, as well.

      • There was no RAF bombing of the Norsk Hydro facility, not early on.

In 1942 a British glider-born commando team of paratroopers went in to link up with the Norwegian resistance to destroy the plant. However, the gliders and their Halifax tug aircraft all crashed and the British troops were variously killed or captured and the operation fell apart..

A year later a team of British-trained Norwegian commandos was able to sabotage the plant with explosives. That successful ground attack was closely followed by a series of Allied bombings of the now-crippled plant. These air raids convinced the Germans not to bother to try to restore the plant but instead to ship to Germany the heavy water remaining on site. The ferry carrying that shipment is the one you referred to.

To my knowledge the US A-bomb program did not bother with heavy water as a reactor moderator. Instead we used electrically controlled moveable cadmium rods, or so I recall.

      • Michael,

Did you know that the former Kaman Sciences plant on Garden of the Gods Road was where all the 1960s-and-later A-bomb initiators were manufactured?

  • Would these “legal roadblocks” that concern Ithaca’s officials include the First Amendment to the United States Constitution?

  • Microagressions Awareness is for the greater good. While I cannot suppost this form of witch hunt, it will serve to further awaken white college students to white identity. Thus it’s ultimately shooting the Librals and their pet Minority in the foot.

The whole idea that someone can be indicted for an anonymously made μA (microAgression) complaint and face possible legal action seems sure to lead to: whites who make unpopular comments getting uA complaints.

Cultural Marxism/PC has morphed from an ideology…albeit a silly one….. into the creation of a sect or cult that is every bit as kooky and absurd as the ones that have been prominent the last several years in this country.
And it is a fact that the people afflicted with it truly do have mental disorders.
I’m a firm believer that the people involved need to be assigned a number, stamped on an ear tag and attached to one of their ears, while they’re in college, with a tracking collar so they can be monitored after they leave for the safety of the public at large.
