‘Liberal,’ ‘Tolerant’ Vanderbilt Muslims Seek to Bully Black Professor into Silence

Eric Owens, Daily Caller, January 21, 2015

A black Vanderbilt University professor’s op-ed critical of Islamic terrorism has touched off a wave of protest by Muslim students and other critics.

The op-ed author is Carol Swain, a longtime professor of law and political science at Vanderbilt and a self-proclaimed political conservative. Her op-ed, entitled “Charlie Hebdo attacks prove critics were right about Islam,” appeared in The Tennessean (Nashville’s main newspaper) on Jan. 15.

Swain, who opposes burqas and advocates stronger efforts at assimilation for American Muslims, argued that radical Islam “poses an absolute danger to us and our children unless it is monitored better than it has been under the Obama administration.”

In response, Muslim students, led by Vanderbilt undergraduate Farishtay Yamin, took great offense.

Yamin told The Vanderbilt Hustler, the campus newspaper, that she “could not believe her eyes” when she read Swain’s column. The student also quickly labeled Swain’s opinion as “hate speech.”

She then used Facebook to set up a “Campus-Wide Protest Against Hate Speech Published in the Tennessean” on Saturday afternoon.

Attendance at the fairly brief event was in the low hundreds, The College Fix reports. Students who showed up brought signs emblazoned with slogans such as “Better a brat than a bigot.”

Yamin, who is the publicity chair for Vanderbilt’s Muslim Student Association, told the audience in no uncertain terms that a black female professor’s speech must be restricted if she says “these kinds of things” in the future.

“What I’m really trying to show her is that she can’t continue to say these kinds of things on a campus that’s so liberal and diverse and tolerant,” Yamin declared.

Swain “used a platform of murdering people to gain publicity,” Yamin charged.

“There is no way the students here are going to allow further attacks on their own peers,” the Muslim undergrad also threatened, according to the Fix.

“And if the university respects us as human beings, it has to come out and condemn these statements and promise us that it’s not going to happen again in the future.”

I hope the university is providing some security for the professor.

    black vs. muslim.
Let’s see who’s on the bottom of the ‘perpetually oppressed’ crowd’s food chain this time.

(Btw, Carol Swain has brought up Jared Taylor many times.)

The Rainbow Coalition has always been a group of peoples who have nothing in common other than they hate “the establishment”: men, white people, Christians, et cetera. It’s only a matter of time before the Coalition descends into chaos and infighting, like the Muslims and Hindus did in India after they were granted sovereignty from Great Britain.

      • David Ashton

The crock at the end of this rainbow is not of gold but of something with the same number of letters.

        • Hammerheart

Islam may just be the catalyst that destroys the rainbow coalition for good. The wolf hiding amongst the sheep always over plays it’s hand/paw and then gets flushed out.

“What I’m really trying to show her is that she can’t continue to say these kinds of things on a campus that’s so liberal and diverse and tolerant,” Yamin declared.

How can one argue with that?

Swain is gem. The real purge on college campuses is ideological. When less than 4% of Humanities and Social Sciences profs self ID as “conservative”, 20% as “moderate” and the rest as “liberal” or “radical” it’s obvious Marxism is the religion of the Academy.

    • GeneticsareDestiny

Usually blacks are at the top of the progressive stack, but I think the Muslims will win out this time. This professor is black, but she is also conservative, and that is absolutely unacceptable to modern day liberals. White liberals will think she’s been brainwashed by conservative whites and her fellow blacks will think she’s an Uncle Tom. Both groups will want her to avoid expressing any conservative opinions, ever.

    • KyraNelson

Regarding Mr. Taylor, In what context? Supporting his views or giving the knee-jerk banshee shriek about “white supremacism?”

  • David Ashton

The Qur’an and Hadith constitute “hate speech”.

Conservative Inc. (and especially Hannity) have a new pet!

  • jayvbellis

I am a Vanderbilt alum. I note that a Carol Swain and many other decent Black Americans in Middle TN are, well…

    It’s a fallen world.

We all must try to do our best.

  • superlloyd

Muslims are trying to usurp blacks’ position as the demographic that can’t be criticised despite both groups manifest delusions, pathologies and psychoses. This gives the lie to Obongo’s fatuous obsevation that the US is managing muslim integration better than the EU.

  • Capn Dad

Yeah Nashville will soon have minarets popping up all over the city. Nashville is now inhabited by yankee liberals who have decided to “civilize” all us hillbillies. We wrote Memphis off a long time ago…now we have to write off Nashville and Knoxville. Go to Vanderbilt and you would swear you are in the middle east.

    • jayvbellis

Are you interesting in joining others of us here and related places (Occidental Dissent, Leauge of the South) in doing activism, organizing in and around Nashville Middle TN, along exactly these lines?

The area is losing it’s Southern Culture, Southerners are being replaced in the South by:

      Bad (Muslim emphasis) immigration
      Bad Northeast Liberal Leftists
Bad anti Southern media – Hollywood, MSM
Cultural Marxists in academia promoting everything hostile to authentic Southern Culture, Southern Nationalism from MLK was a God, to Trayvon Martin was a little child victim of racism, to open Borders immigration to the USA. the South is a religious commandment, to Mathhew Shepherd Hate Crime/thought crime bills etc.

We have had some effectivism act ims and there is a reason Amren pulls off successful conferences outside of Nashville TN.

“What I’m really trying to show her is that she can’t continue to say these kinds of things on a campus that’s so liberal and diverse and tolerant,” Yamin declared.

    Really….this is just too easy.

  • dd121

    More “tolerance” from the left.

  • AmericanCitizen

We all know that the Liberal definition of tolerance is complete and unquestioning belief in Leftist ideology with no dissensions, contrary opinions, or alternate viewpoints. Any deviation from orthodoxy is neither required, desired, or accepted. Those who persist in holding and espousing conflicting viewpoints are to be labeled as racists, xenophobes, bigots, homophobes, the newly minted term “Islamaphobe”, or any such term that is designed to bring any semblance of a rational debate to a halt.

    • Fair Dinkum

“We all know that the Liberal definition of tolerance is complete and unquestioning belief in Leftist ideology with no dissensions, contrary opinions, or alternate viewpoints.”

That restriction is applied almost exclusively to whites and Westerners. Hispanics, blacks, Muslims etc. can express mind-blowing levels of racial, ethnic and religious hated with virtually no criticism from the left.

      • GeneticsareDestiny

That is usually true, but sometimes when one form of diversity attacks another the white liberals get infuriated. I think this is going to be one of those times. Blacks can usually say whatever they want about any race, but they don’t seem to be allowed to criticize Islam. This same thing (the effort to censor conservative opinions on Islam) has already happened to another black woman, Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

        • Henry Higgins

Are you seeing how this pans out on the interpersonal level, GeneticsareDestiny? As in, is there a certain element of ‘white’ liberals who take on muslims’ cause? Any sense of what’s going on there?

          • GeneticsareDestiny

I’m not sure, to be honest. Supporting Muslims seems to have become one of those things you simply have to do to even be socially recognized as a liberal. Plenty of people who are otherwise liberal but are anti-Islam get harassed endlessly by pro-Islam liberals for their opinion (Bill Maher comes to mind).

Female liberals do seem to be somewhat more likely to support Islam than male liberals, though, which is bizarre seeing as how Islam is very opposed to everything feminism stands for.

“What I’m really trying to show her is that she can’t continue to say
these kinds of things on a campus that’s so liberal and diverse and
    tolerant,” Yamin declared.

The irony and hypocrisy of her statement is completely lost on her. She is part of a campus that is liberal, diverse and tolerant yet she cannot tolerate an opposing opinion.

She must be related to the Muslim protestor holding up a sign that reads: “Behead all those who claim Islam is violent”

  • JohnEngelman

As a black woman Carol Swain is a twofer. A white man would probably be fired for criticizing Islam.

  • Steve_in_Vermont

Translated “show her we’re liberal, tolerant, and diverse” means “As long as you don’t say anything that offends me, you’re free to say anything you want”. Perhaps a campus “review board” (read: censorship board) would be in order. Apparently required reading in this institution doesn’t include George Orwell’s 1984.

  • Steve_in_Vermont

Millions of people worldwide are at protests supporting free speech. This because of the shootings in France. Perhaps the students at this university are not aware of this. Free speech is……….what these students say it is.

  • Katherine McChesney

I know Carol Swain and believe me, she is a TRUE Conservative.

  • Carol Swain has had decidedly less than hostile things to say and write about AR in the past.

  • LHathaway

Is it in bad taste to say, ‘Muslim violence, OK, a reaction to oppression and racism’. ‘Someone noticing the violence, not OK, must be stopped’?

  • Screamin_Ruffed_Grouse

“What I’m really trying to show her is that she can’t continue to say these kinds of things on a campus that’s so liberal and diverse and tolerant,” Yamin declared.

Well damn. If that doesn’t just say it all.

  • Atheist Realist

is this supposed to be irony?

  • Christorchaos

Dont let being in the South fool you: Vanderbilt is super-liberal plus kicked their Catholic student organization off-campus for not hewing to the PC code.

  • Screamin_Ruffed_Grouse

Hmm… so what are we doing wrong?

  • Hammerheart

Even the liberal media is beginning to disbelieve what they say about islam and peace. Eventually even the dumbest of all journalists are going to connect all the dots and realize islam doesn’t play well with others.

  • humura

Carol Swain had an important book about a decade ago on poor and middle-class whites angered by policies like affirmative action.

  • Who Me?

Maybe little Ms. Farishtay Yamin would be happier living in Saudi Arabia or Somalia, wearing the required burka and naqip in 114-degree weather, not being allowed to drive or go to the grocery store alone, or anywhere else for that matter without a male relative along (and we all know how men love to shop!) Also she wouldn’t be allowed to go to a university, and might even get beheaded for having more education than the local Imam.
