Obama Admin Threatens to Cut Maine Food Stamp Funds over Photo ID Law

Wynton Hall, Breitbart, November 22, 2014

The Obama administration threatened to cut Maine’s food stamp funding on Thursday over its law requiring welfare recipients to show their photo ID when receiving their taxpayer-funded benefits.

In a letter to Maine officials, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees the food stamp program, said the state’s law could be a civil rights violation and may have a “chilling effect” on individuals seeking food stamps.

Maine officials rejected the Obama administration’s logic.

“We do not believe that a policy putting photos on EBT cards has a ‘chilling effect’ on their appropriate use any more than putting photos on drivers licenses has a ‘chilling effect’ on driving,” said Maine Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew.

Mayhew added, “The fed’s objective in coming to Maine was nothing more than an attempt to undermine our ongoing efforts to reduce fraud, waste and abuse in welfare programs.”

Wouldn’t Obama’s threat actually be a good thing for Maine’s white populace? It may cause food stamp recipients, who are disproportionately non-white, to move to another state. It reminds me of when New Orleans blacks were upset over a proposed teen curfew so they threatened to boycott the French Quarter. Nearly all whites were like, “Sweet! We support you no longer being in the French Quarter.”

    • propagandaoftruth

Hey, two birds, one stone! No food stamps = not good place for minorities and illegals, and all for checking voter ID’s to weed out illegal frauds and further de-welcome them?

      GO MAINE

    • Charles Martel

The briar patch. Oh please don’t have all of the Somali Refugees that taxpayer paid organizations have dumped on Maine flee to another state.

Picture ID’s for welfare benefit’s is a great idea. A family member works in that field and says that foodstamp / EBT card fraud is rampant throughout the nation.

  • superlloyd

    No ID, no food.

    • DonReynolds

No ID…..no food provided without identity, using tax dollars..
The No-questions-asked plates and bowls are filled at the back of the church or at the Salvation Army.

Obama’s sons and Eric Holder’s people seem to have a real problem with photo ID. Could it be there are arrest warrants outstanding for them?

    • dale hale

it may be because they all look alike.

    • SentryattheGate

The same federal gov’t. that is opposing states that want to drug test before giving out food stamps and welfare checks. Same federal gov’t. that does not restrict what foods are bought with food stamps (even though that would be easy with UPCs and computer check-outs) yet is now requiring restaurants to post calories on their food, in addition to their requirement to post nutritional info. on food product packages. Same federal gov’t. that raises health insurance on productive citizens, while giving free health care and insurance to “the less fortunate” (who are often obese and diabetic)!

    • DonReynolds

Not a chance……St Louis County recently took 220,000 arrest warrants to the landfill, representing tens of millions in payments and fines for local government, in an attempt to kiss and make up with the rioters and looters at Ferguson.

    • Charles Martel

People with warrants and felons never seem to like carrying ID.

  • WR_the_realist

More sanity from Maine, insanity from Washington, D.C. What everyone nowadays expects.

  • dale hale

Let them cut the funding, who is it going to hurt ?
what a hollow threat. let em eat cake !

    • evilsandmich

Exactly, every state should get on this bandwagon and call his bluff (we all know that Congress isn’t going to).

    • SentryattheGate

Here is another example of how lawyers oppose any sort of common sense! No doubt, there will be lawyers to bring it to court for discrimination.

  • Dave West

It’s as if everything that appears to be common sense these days, is anti-poor, anti-black, anti-immigrant, anti-woman, anti-LGBT, anti-latino, anti-Obama, anti-voting…………………………… ANTI-ANYTHING THAT ISN’T WHITE, EUROPEAN, OR MALE.

    • SFLBIB

Hey. Victimhood is where it’s at. If there aren’t enough real victims, new ones will have to be invented.

    • saxonsun

You men had better stop including women and gays in with these inferiors. It will only backfire on you.

  • dale hale

Red states should all cut the benefits to the bone and export their hooligans to blue states.
Be humane and give them a bus ticket and a box lunch with fresh fruit.

    • SentryattheGate

That reminds me of the so-called “welfare reform” under Clinton; in some states, able-bodied welfare recipients were told that 10-15 hours of work (like picking up litter etc)would be required to receive their benefits. I understand that California shed ~1/3rd of their welfare roll! Apparently that was changed; never heard any more about it. And California is deeply in debt!

      • DonReynolds

Obama re-defined “work” to include household chores, bed rest, reading an inspirational book, helping a neighbor or relative……these are all now examples of “work”.

      • Charles Martel

CA still has 1/3 of all US welfare recipients living there.

        • SentryattheGate

Oh, that’s right, I heard that too. I’ll betcha that most are Hispanic! Like blacks, they believe that whites owe them (because they are taught that we took “their” land).

    • DonReynolds

He He……and a heavy coat, with knit cap, scarf and gloves.

  • Michael Whalen

Just a little aside, but this situation might be a good example of why the 17th amendment should be repealed.

  • nordmann

If I’m not mistaken, I believe Maine is infested with Somali bantus as much as Minnesota or at least trending towards that Abyss.

  • Alex Miller

Maybe the Obama regime is a afraid that requiring photo ID will have a “chilling effect” on all those burqa clad Somalis applying for their gibsmedat, courtesy of the infidel.

  • Usually Much Calmer

I would think being hungry would have a chilling effect on my qualms about being photographed for free food.

  • IstvanIN

This law is discriminatory because how will recipients be able to sell their EBT cards 50¢ on the dollar? The bodega and independent Quickie-mart owners are very careful about their acceptance of EBT cards.

    • dale hale

ah, quikee mart….a parrelel world of greed and filth.

  • MBlanc46

I’ve got to show a photo ID to buy Sudafed in Illinois. It hasn’t had a “chilling effect” on my purchase of it when needed. For Sudafed, it’s an annoyance and completely unnecessary. For welfare benefits and voter registration, it’s perfectly reasonable and within the rights of the states (see the Tenth Amendment) to require it.

  • DonReynolds

    Hooray for Maine!
(Never thought I would get a chance to say that.)

  • LHathaway

Do food stamps just magically appear? Wouldn’t eliminating fraud allow the government to help more people who need help? Wouldn’t it encourage those receiving food stamps to spend their stamps on food and not some other item?

    • mobilebay

Why, LHathaway, don’t you know the government couldn’t exist without fraud? Corruption? Payoffs? Ignoring their own laws? And a hatred of white citizens as this administration does?

  • Alucard_the_last

The ‘poor’ (most of whom are just lazy) will never turn down an EBT card regardless of a photo. If I were in charge, one would only be allow to buy the basics such as rice and beans. No beef, no processed foods, no deserts, no tv dinners and no increase in the balance every time they squeeze out another baby.

  • Hell if that is all it takes to begin a reform of the welfare system, more states should follow

  • Realist

“The Obama administration threatened to cut Maine’s food stamp funding on Thursday over its law requiring welfare recipients to show their photo ID when receiving their taxpayer-funded benefits.”
This should be done nation wide.

  • Good, Obola; cut the funding.

  • John Barleycorn

Not a shabby idea for jungle-boy..

  • Maybe the state of Maine should impound the federal excise taxes collected on things like fuel, alcohol and tobacco.

  • BlackedOut

To take the tour of the White House you must show TWO forms of ID. My wife was almost prevented from accompanying the rest of our family as one ID had a middle initial and the other had her middle name.

I think having to provide ANY ID to tour the White House has a “chilling effect”. When will Obongola craft an Executive Order doing away with this injustice?
