Major Newspaper Pulls Cartoon Critical of Obama’s Immigration Reform After Many Call It ‘Racist’

Dave Urbanski, The Blaze, November 22, 2014

After the Indianapolis Star published a political cartoon on Friday that was decidedly against President Barack Obama’s executive action on immigration reform, the paper’s executive editor Jeff Taylor said many readers were offended and called it “racist.”

So on Saturday the Star pulled the political cartoon by Gary Varvel. Taylor said Varvel “did not intend to be racially insensitive in his attempt to express his strong views” about the issue but added that ”we erred in publishing it.”

More from Taylor’s column in the Star:

The cartoon depicted an immigrant family climbing through a window of a white family’s home as Thanksgiving dinner was served. I was uncomfortable with the depiction when I saw it after it was posted. We initially decided to leave the cartoon posted to allow readers to comment and because material can never truly be eliminated once it is circulating on the web. But we are removing the cartoon from the opinion section of our website, as well as an earlier version posted on Facebook that showed one character with a mustache.

The second version of the cartoon showed the character without a mustache, but every other element appeared the same as the first version.

It’s official: Mustaches are now racist.

    • Usually Much Calmer

Well, since Asian men have a harder time growing them, yes, they are!

      Alcohol is very racist.

    • ghettovalley

I once read an article stating that beards are a symbol of white male oppression and racism. You have to wonder if these dirtbags even believe the crap that spews out of their own mouths.

      • texasoysterman

My white male oppression and racism is hanging about 5 inches off of my chin.

  • superlloyd

Gutless cowardice in the face of the meaningless racism charge. The free press is a sick joke.

    • Speedy Steve

Welcome to the new free press, but don’t criticize the You-know-whos.

Is a mustache now recognized as a racist stereotype?

      >>>Is a mustache now recognized as a racist stereotype?

Yes, especially in combination with a red ball cap.

  • dd121

Don’t you love living in our post-racial times under our Dear Leader?

    • ghettovalley

Someone should design posters of Obama, depicting him in the way that North Korean leaders are depicted in their propaganda. Let’s be honest here, would you even be surprised if murals of him leading battles and reading to children started appearing in major cities? And some bizarre personality cult reminiscent of North Korea’s started springing up around him?

Meanwhile, notice how the white people are portrayed—the dopey galoot white man and the slouching, bug-eyed blonde.

Also, we’re told that Hispanic is not a racial designation. But the National Council of La Raza (“The Race”) identifies itself an Hispanic advocacy group, and to portray Hispanics in an unflattering way is said to be racist.

    Hypocrites!

  • David Ashton

    Isn’t a mustache also a homophobic stereotype – YMCA!

    • Speedy Steve

I’ve noticed that 3 types of men wear mustaches: Homosexuals, mohammedans, and corrupt cops.

      • David Ashton

It used once to be a formal requirement for officers in the British Army, and not permitted without a beard to the Royal Navy. For some reason none of our servicemen to my knowledge ever wears it in “toothbrush” fashion.

  • David Ashton

Isn’t a mustache a homophobic stereotype – see the Village People Puppets video.

I am allowed to say that I don’t want immigrants, which is kind of nativist as well as a preference.

But I can’t say the immigrants are Mexican and Central American, which is a fact and plain as day to boot.

This can’t last. It is too absurd.

    • Sick of it

It can as long as we live in a third world banana republic under a foreign dictator who simply declares law into being.

  • Luca

“Hispanic” is not a race. They are mongrel mestizos, comprised of a mixture of Mediterranean-European, sub-Saharan African, and Native American DNA.

Nor is “mustache” a race either. But Liberals have come to use that word as an multi-purpose attention getter. It is the Swiss Army Knife of Liberal insults.

    • JackKrak

And to the extent that “Hispanic” is a race, that actually means they’re white.

      Right, George Zimmerman?

  • 1gravity

It is just sad the way institutions, businesses, media and individuals flee before charges of racism. Of course, it is easy for me to say that, in my present role as keyboard warrior. I just hope that, when it’s my turn in the spotlight, I can tell them to buzz off.

  • withcaution

Let’s get real, the interloper needed to have a sombrero and brown skin. I can’t believe we’re all fooling ourselves into believing the people breaking in the country don’t have some very common characteristics.

ms13 tatts all over their faces and necks……………………

Whites Opposing invasion and their own disposession = racism.

    The new racial socialist math.

    • kenfrombayside

The reason for this invasion is simple: most Americans remain silent, don’t vote, and spend a disproportionate amount of time engaged doing nothing, like watching NFL football. Contact your US Rep and 2 Senators; get to the polls to vote against the traitorous demRATS; return fundraising letters saying you will not give until the border is sealed and our unique Anglo heritage saved; prepare your meals and do your own gardening; go to NUMBERSUSA to send faxes to our alleged leaders; and join real immigration reform groups such as FAIR. Our enemies are at war with us, and we have to fight back. If you say or do nothing, you are part of the problem.

      • ghettovalley

The republicans aren’t going to save us. They are already complicit in this amnesty nightmare that is being unwillingly forced upon us by the democrats. We will never be able to vote our way out of this mess.

        • See The Future

I would take an absolute miracle for us to vote ourselves out of this death spiral.

  • mobilebay

Why don’t you just run a cartoon showing who’s really sneaking in? We all know it’s those pesky Norwegians.

    • See The Future

Unfortunately the Norwegians have the same problem as the Brits, French, Dutch, Germans, etc. The political leadership is a fine collection of traitors. Scandinavia once a paradise, now moving toward third world status with real Norwegians subject to rape and violence.

  • LeonNJ

He looks like a large Turkish man trying to kidnap that blonde.

  • MannyR

MSM calling reality racist? Nooooooo…who on earth would see that coming from a mile away? So tired, so tired

    • Speedy Steve

No, the MSM are calling the truth racist. There’s a big difference.

  • LHathaway

    It’s a clever cartoon.

  • crockadoodle6

Just stop buying the newspaper. Same with 365 McDonald’s or any of the other businesses that froth with pc pandering.

  • Herman

    * The weaker the argument

    * The quicker the charge of “racism” comes out

Sanchez could not look like a Dirty Sanchez.

  • FinnShane

You are quite an astute observer of totalitarian fashion.

  • FinnShane

It looked more like Super Mario bringing the extended family.
