What Makes a Criminal? Gene Trawl Raises Questions

Mariette Le Roux, Medical Xpress, October 28, 2014

Is a violent criminal born that way, or shaped by childhood experiences and circumstances?

Delving into one of oldest questions in psychology, some scientists have suggested genes may contribute to roughly half of the influence–by affecting complex brain chemistry, for instance.

But, until now, DNA clues to support this have been sketchy.

Scientists in Europe and the United States on Tuesday fingered two genes which in a mutated form are found in a “substantially higher frequency” in violent offenders.

A study of nearly 800 Finns jailed for both violent and non-violent crimes, and compared to the general population, found variants of two genes, called MAOA and CDH13, to be “associated with extremely violent behaviour”.

“No substantial signal was observed for either MAOA or CDH13 among non-violent offenders, indicating that findings were specific for violent offending,” said the study, published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry.

The scientists took into account environmental factors–whether or not people had a history of substance abuse, antisocial personality disorders or childhood maltreatment.

But this did not alter the outcome.

The study was not designed to explain the impact of genetic variants and the authors believe there could be many other genes which play a role, directly or indirectly, in the molecular cascade.

And, they note, the two mutated gene versions or genotypes are “rather common.”

As many as one in five people have them, of whom the vast majority never commit rape, assault or murder.

Similarly, people without the variants were found in the ultra-violent trial group.

“Although the high-risk genotype combination of MAOA and CDH13 has a risk of about 13-fold compared with the ‘usual’ genotype combination, still the vast majority (of) high-risk genotype individuals do not commit severe violent crimes,” study co-author Jari Tiihonen of the neuroscience department at Sweden’s Karolinska Institutet told AFP.

The MAOA gene has been linked to the metabolism of dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in addiction and the ability to experience pleasure.

The CDH13 is believed to be involved in impulse control and has been associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

{snip}

“I think that we have found two genes which have the largest effect on aggressive behaviour, and that there are probably tens or hundreds other genes having smaller effects,” said Tiihonen.

{snip}

“Should these preliminary findings hold up, they would have significant implications for identifying potentially violent offenders at an earlier stage,” William Davies, a lecturer in behaviour genetics at Cardiff University wrote in a comment describing the work as “interesting and potentially important.”

It may also allow yield avenues for treatment.

[Editor’s Note: In A Troublesome Inheritance, Nicholas Wade cites a study which found American blacks are fifty times more likely to have the variant of MAOA that is associated with propensity to violence.]

  • E_Pluribus_Pluribus

Nicholas Wade’s account, in A Troublesome Inheritance, of the MAOA gene is much richer and detailed than this article. Besides the fact noted by the Amren Editor above, Wade details how “promoter” genes affect the expression of the MAOA gene. One of many advantages of careful reading of the book.

“We’ve isolated a gene variant that predicts future violent behavior.”

As more genes for criminal behavior are discovered it will be found that they are more frequently found in members of some races than others.

What’s that comment supposed to be, some insightful new bit of knowledge? You just summarized what the article said. Go away. You hate us White goys and we know it. Why is Engleman not banned.

In the last few days someone posted some of Engleman’s anti White posts. No one can help.

  • Can there be moral justification for aborting future violent offenders in the womb?

I say yes, because the living have a right to protect themselves. But, this would be the one instance where liberals would oppose abortion because aborting violence prone fetuses would have a “disparate racial impact.” And in general, liberals are opposed to people’s right to protect themselves. Witness their efforts to ban gun ownership among patriots.

    • Stan D Mute

If the Central American indians are deported and the negroes bribed to return to their homeland there would be no reason to abort anyone. In fact, government would then be helpful in promoting population growth at the upper end of the bell curve.

    • DaveMed

Anti-White “liberals” have a remarkable ability to explore trains of thought to pathetically shallow degrees but give the impression that their subsequent conclusions are profound, earth-shaking discoveries.

An obvious example is the constant trumpeting of the notion that America’s judicial system is “racist” because Blacks and Latinos are incarcerated at higher rates than Whites are. They neglect to take the logical next step and wonder whether this might be due to higher rates of violent crime among those racial/ethnic groups. (Conveniently enough, they never seem to complain about the fact that Asian incarceration rates are generally lower than those of White Americans.)

      • They also studiously ignore the fact that men are incarcerated at much higher rates than women. Does this mean men are oppressed?

        • none of your business

It should. Men also die younger. They also pay most of the taxes. I’ll bet that about 85 percent of women who work work for some kind of government whether as actual civil servants or in hospitals and other non profits that depend on government grants
It is private sector men who pay the salaries of all the government and non profit women.
Men are more likely to be mugged and robbed due to being out alone late at night. They are more likely to work in dangerous occupations like mining, construction and farming. They get drafted and sent off to be cannon fodder. Men have to beg and connive for sex while women get offers just by existing.
          Men are the oppressed victims.

          • I agree. My rhetorical question was directed at liberals, who would never admit such a thing.

          • none of your business

I forgot to mention that it is against federal law and the policy of most employers to hire White men.

Surgical castration at birth would work just as well. They would never secrete much testosterone or grow muscles so they would be harmless. Plus they could not breed.
But abortion would spare the expense of childbirth and medical care during pregnancy.

Some genes can be detected even before the fetus really develops into a fetus. Some clinics already offer parents to choose the hair/eye/skin color of their newborns before the in-vitro fertilization.

      • meanqueen

Okay, as a former IVF nurse, I can’t let this one go by without a response. NO clinic anywhere is offering those kinds of choices, and NO IVF laboratory is capable of determining those genetic features either. What is offered now is chromosomal or genetic analysis to detect abnormalities, and some clinics will offer sex selection.

        • M.

          How about this one: http://www(dotyoutube(dot)com/watch?v=-mhKeoYTTUY

          Are they lying?

          • meanqueen

This is some fruitcake guy who thinks he’s being very clever, claiming to be speaking with a knowledgeable person over the phone (but who knows who she really is), so I would say yes, definitely, he is lying. Gender selection is possible and has been for a long time, because gender is determined by examining chromosomes. Chromosomal abnormalities can be determined fairly easily as well. It is much, much harder to test for genetic abnormalities as that requires a lot more labor intensive work on the part of the laboratory. It is possible to examine a genome of an individual and predict eye color, and to come close to predicting ancestry (genealogy organizations offer DNA testing for this purpose), but no IVF clinic is offering that kind of DNA analysis of embryos. Usually a big, stupid lie incorporates some strands of truth into it in order to dupe the misinformed. Don’t fall for it. If you are opposed to “designer babies,” stick to protesting chromosomal abnormality detection and gender selection, because that’s what’s being done today in reproductive technology.

          • M.

Okay, thanks for sharing your perspective.

I’m not opposed to designer babies at all. Quite the contrary. I wish I could choose which physical (and other) traits of my ancestry I pass to my progeny, and which ones I could dish. Same for the mother. If this were, it would herald a new era for eugenics.

          • meanqueen

M., I’m sorry if I sounded a little testy, and knowing that you aren’t critical of designer babies per se changes things – I’m just tired of people who are really anti IVF (usually devout Catholics or fundamentalist Christians) spreading rumors that IVF is all about getting the eye color you want in a baby rather than what it’s really about, and that is helping couples overcome nature in order to have a beloved family, or avoiding giving birth to a child with abnormalities. That’s where we are at with the science right now. Also, just FYI, even if it were standard practice to detect the genetic makeup of the embryo and select it for transfer (to the womb), we are still limited by what is there to work with. Let’s say you have eight embryos and one of them has blue eyes and you want that, there you go, you pick that embryo. But what if none of them have blue eyes? You can only select what is there to be selected. You cannot create an embryo with certain features out of nothing. I believe people actually think that can be done and that it is being done. We aren’t even at the point where you can select an embryo that exists and has genes for blue eyes, let alone inject blue eye genes into an embryo that doesn’t have them already! I hope that makes sense.

          • M.

“Let’s say you have eight embryos and one of them has blue eyes and you want that, there you go, you pick that embryo. But what if none of them have blue eyes? You can only select what is there to be selected.”

Yes, that’s what I figured. “Designer babies” may be a bit misleading in that sense, as they’re not designed from scratch. All of the embryos would of the same parents. And since each parent randomly passes half their chromosomes each time, we’d get different “combinations”, of which we could choose from. That’s what I had in mind, and I’m considering consulting one of these clinics for that before having a baby.

If we take the example of blue eyes, based on my ancestry, I probably have the genes for them (although they’re not expressed), and my fiancée definitely has them. So it’s highly likely for us to pass them on to one of the embryos.

I would guess the same procedure is followed for more serious things, like avoiding passing certain disease- or defect-prone genes.

“I’m just tired of people who are really anti IVF (usually devout Catholics or fundamentalist Christians).”

I’m atheist, so the only unlikely reason I could be against that would be that I find the whole thing a icky. And even then, I would hope my rational and pragmatic side would prevail.

“Life” is not sacred to me. We kill billions of living things daily, from washing our hands, to taking antibiotics, to using insecticides. And humans are just another species of animals.

I prefer to measure morality by the amount of suffering rather than a spiritual concept as “life”. And to think that these embryos in the labs have any consciousness or endure any suffering is ludicrous.

          • meanqueen

There are websites you can go to if you want to estimate the odds of having a blue eyed child. As for life being sacred, I have really mixed feelings about this subject. I definitely am pro abortion and pro death penalty and pro death-with-dignity euthanasia, but there should be good, sound reasons for each. There should be some respect for life “per se” so as to avoid becoming totally callous, but I agree we have gone too far overboard with the life-is-sacred theme.

    • SlizzardAjeosshi

I will tell you a mildly funny anecdote: a few weeks ago i posted a comment on an Italian website where i expressed my favourable views of abortion as an excellent tool for eugenic policies, particularly in order to control the explosive population growth of some ethnic groups.

Of course i was virulently attacked with ad hominems and complete non-sense by the lib crowd.
Feigning surprise i asked them something along the lines of:” But but but i thought abortion was a pillar of the left”.

Some guy proceeded to lecture me on the existence of a left wing variety of abortion and right wing one, i kid you not

      • Max

Schizophrenia is rampant among the left.

    • dean53

That’s the problem with abortion. It’s a two-edged sword. Good if blacks and Mexicans abort themselves; bad if whites do. If I remember correctly, black abortion rates are about 5 times the white abortion rate. If abortion is outlawed we’ll be inundated with black [email protected]@rds.

After teaching kindergarten in darkest Atlanta I’m sure Nancy knows how to predict people with violent potential. So does anyone who ever taught at or attended a school with blacks.

    • Nancy

Oh, yes. It wasn’t that difficult back then, and it’s only become easier as the years go by.

For example, last week I went to meet my 3rd grade daughter at her school for lunch. As my husband and I were sitting at the lunch table, I couldn’t help but notice some of the black males in the room: specifically, their mannerisms, speech, and facial expressions. One boy in particular had just been spoken to by his teacher, and as he sauntered away, I could visibly detect the sullen, resentful, “F-U” expression on his face. I pointed him out to my husband and said, “There goes another FIA member”. (Future Inmates of America.)

My kid’s 2nd grade teacher last year was a race realist…she’d share the same kinds of stories about those FIAs that I’d come to know so well. They lack empathy, resent having to take direction, and rigorously avoid anything which resembles “work”. They have two main facial expressions: the resentful, sullen look reserved for authority figures, and a stupid, sneaky grin the rest of the time, like they’re looking for someone to impress by their shenanigans.

      Blood tests are unnecessary.

      • RacialRay

I heard somewhere that chimps (no, the ‘real’ kind) could be taught to mimic human facial expressions. I wonder if they could be taught the ‘pimp stroll’.

    • SlizzardAjeosshi

Philipinos in America are a relatively self-selecting group of immigrants, in other parts of the world where there’s a higher presence of lower class pinoy immigrants (like my own country Italy) they do get involved in violent crime on a fairly regular basis.

Manila is probably the most violent capital in East Asia, albeit still a much safer place than anything you would find in Sub-Saharian Africa or Latin America

Yes; I think not only was this protracted courtship and ritual a “filter” but thereby promoted success into future generations by propagating the desirable genetic characteristics of stable and civil society (at least those beneficial to Anglo-Euro societies).
