NIH Allocates $31-Million to Tackle Racial Gaps in Training

Paul Basken, Chronicle of Higher Education, October 22, 2014

The National Institutes of Health on Wednesday awarded more than $31-million to a dozen university groups that will develop and test strategies for improving the racial diversity of the nation’s medical work force.

The lead universities receiving grants include some of the nation’s top institutions for training minority scientists. Their projects involve modifying enrollment processes, revamping undergraduate courses, and improving mentoring, among other efforts.

The NIH, the world’s leading financer of medical research, formally studied its diversity problem in 2011. It found the odds that a black scientist would win an NIH grant were 10 percentage points lower than those of a white scientist, and it promised to pour money into strategies to rectify that disparity.

Such findings “are of grave concern to NIH,” its director, Francis S. Collins, said at a briefing outlining the awards.

The lead institutions are Boston College; California State University’s Long Beach and Northridge campuses; Morgan State, Portland State, and San Francisco State Universities; Xavier University of Louisiana; and the Universities of Alaska at Fairbanks, of Detroit Mercy, of Maryland-Baltimore County, and of Texas at El Paso. The University of California at Los Angeles will host a center for evaluating the success of the programs.

The NIH intentionally limited the awards to smaller-budget institutions with a history of training minority students, while expecting them to team up with a wide range of universities, Dr. Collins said. The agency hopes that improved educational approaches, such as earlier exposure to hands-on scientific experience, can cut the loss of minority students at the undergraduate level, he said.

{snip}

The wide range of participating institutions should provide good data on what works, said Raynard S. Kington, a former NIH deputy director who is now president of Grinnell College. It’s a “good first step,” he said. “Now comes the hard work of implementing and rigorously assessing to see what works best in which setting.”

Money well spent if you ask me.

Liberals have learned nothing from 40 years of throwing money at minorities and expecting results. If doing the same thing but expecting a different result is insanity, this must be some sort of schizophrenia at this point.

NIH head Francis Collins is the same man who headed the Human Genome Project.

After the human genome was mapped Collins either falsely claimed- or was misquoted by liberals- that the Project showed there were no genetic differences among the races.

If memory serves, there were several groups working on the Human Genome Sequencing Project. One was sponsored by the federal government — which estimated three years or more to complete their mission — and there were private sector groups, one of whom completed the project first and in less than a year…

  • SentryattheGate

Well if we just lower everything down to the lowest-common denominator, then we’ll have more diversity! Like our gubmint schools; we’ll just dumb down everybody, for equality’s sake!!!!

If they want to increase racial diversity of the nation’s medical work force, would it help if hospitals hired a few more black janitors?

    • GeneticsareDestiny

I imagine Hispanics have already taken over hospital janitorial jobs by now, and once too many Hispanics work in a certain job, no English-speakers (white or black) will be hired, because it makes communication between different janitors too difficult.

      • Ron Cheaters

funny thing is, janitors in a hospital environment make more than the starting nurses who work there (for about 3 years).
I lived with 2 nurses for a while, and I used to hear this complaint almost daily.

Look – if I wanted completely incompetent black doctors, I’d recruit them directly from Africa. They’re doing a bang-up job right now.

“The lead universities receiving grants include some of the nation’s top institutions for training minority scientists.”

A true oxymoron – if there ever was one.

    • This will founder on the fact that pre-med college study programs very effectively weed out the less intelligent and less motivated students. The undergraduate organic chemistry classes for pre-med students at CU Boulder, for example are not as tough as those for chemistry majors, but they are exactly the same as those for molecular biology and chemical engineering majors, so they’re certainly no joke.

By the time students have graduated and are entering medical school, the selection process for the most part is already over.

  • This can only mean one thing:

More affirmative action black doctors of Patrick Chavis quality.

    • Luca

Kermit Gosnell and Conrad Murray come to mind as well.

    • me

      “niggling”…hee hee!

  • My HMO is Humana. THEY assigned me a Mexican WOMAN doctor as my PCP. How the hell do I get out of that thing?

That said, many of my Mexican students at the University of Texas at San Antonio were intending to enroll in the UT Health Science Center, a HUGE operation in San Antonio, which is run by Mexicans. All my students echo the Mexican philosophy, which is “If I want to be a doctor, nothing can stop me.” Most of these “dreamers” had low IQs, but had been told by the public schools “You can be whatever you want to be.”

How to put a dent in this corrupt system is the problem because we have the teachers telling these retards to become doctors, scientists, and astronauts, while the government pays off the universities to suck them in and make them doctors, etc.

There’s a huge enclave of Hindu, Mexican, and mystery meat doctors that live in northwest San Antonio in high buck homes, huge houses jammed together on small lots. The whole city is becoming a medical tech center, based on a farce, a fraud, paid for by Rick Perry and the Texas legislature.

When I’m ready to see a doctor, I want to see a good white or Jewish doctor, someone who pays attention to the details. That’s almost impossible anymore.

“Their projects involve modifying enrollment processes, …”: Instituting affirmative action to ensure unqualified vibrants displace qualified YTs in admissions and enrollment.

“…revamping undergraduate courses, …”: Dropping such unimportant subjects as algebra, calculus, stats, and chemistry down to remedial levels – for everyone, since singling out mental midgets causes poor self-esteem.

“…and improving mentoring, among other efforts.”: Saddling bright YTs with Little Brothas and Little Sistahs from the urban jungle, to ensure the white students are too swamped to attain their best grades, while dragging up the GPA of the future Rev. Dr. Jerquelian Jackson King, Jr. by 0.5%.

      • Earl P. Holt III

The communists running the Yankee Government are NOT experiencing “cognitive dissonance”: They never believed their own BS, but merely saw Marxism as an effective route to achieve power.

It’s why the “Democrat” Party is the focus of Marxism in America…

I have thought the exact, same thing: Both Clintons ARE Pathological Liars by ANY clinical definition, and so is the Bolshevik-in-Chief and his VP.

Unfortunately, anyone who designates himself a “Democrat” — in this day and age — is either too stupid, too dishonest, or too ignorant to recognize the fact…

          • MBlanc46

Or perhaps is trapped in habits of mind that were formed decades ago and are just to deeply engrained to escape.

    • Even professional sports. If not hard and fast quotas or almost-as-hard affirmative action, then the soft affirmative action of the cult of black athletic supremacy at work.

      • Earl P. Holt III

“…the soft affirmative-action of the cult of black athletic supremacy…”?

No honest person can look at the way blacks dominate Track & Field, the NBA and the “speed” positions in the NFL and not recognize that blacks are better athletes, in general.

What is a truly fascinating societal phenomenon are the leftist dolts who are quick to acknowledge black athletic superiority, but REFUSE to acknowledge the intellectual superiority of whites over blacks.

        • The only thing western African blacks can hang their hats on in that regard is sprinting speed. They dominate the NFL and NBA because the system has been rigged in their favor.

          • Earl P. Holt III

Sprinting speed, jumping ability — both height and length — quickness, “wiriness” and probably many other skills. Not only do they dominate EVERY running event from the 100 Yd Dash to the 880, they also dominate the Long Jump and the various Hurdles events.

They do NOT do as well in events that require “technique” developed by endless training — such as the high jump and pole vault — but they dominate these other events, even though they are 14% of the population (or 7%, if you count only the males.)

Even the “females” dominate these same events, and the WNBA, as well.

You are not the first person I’ve heard suggest that there was a “conspiracy” favoring blacks in professional and amateur athletics. I think the idea is ludicrous…

          • There’s no conspiracy. This is not a result of some cigar muncher on the 115th floor ordering things. The world rarely works like that.

The straw that stirs the drink is the early high school years. Black 14-year olds are way more physically mature than white 14-year olds on average, so the football and basketball coaches gush over the blacks. This creates a chain reaction where the college scouting services (Rivals, Scout, etc.) drool over blacks, this increases their college presence which in turn increases their pro presence. And with the game so black, this means the rules are tweaked, fouls and penalties called and not called, to tweak the games around the way blacks play them.

This also means that everyone so gushes over blacks that whites who show up in stereotypically black positions, who deserve scholarships, are ignored. Here’s a quick example: Google “Chaz Glotta.” He poured in almost 30 a game on average during both his junior and senior seasons in HS, (being mindful of the fact that Missouri HS basketball games’ regulation clocks are only 32 minutes long for the whole game), but at the time the media around here profiled him, the only scholarship offers he had were one Ivy league and one from a D-II school in Colorado. No Kentucky, no Duke, no Carolina, no UCLA. Why not? You guess. He wound up getting an offer from and going to SIUC.

If you read Caste Football, then you’d know that the legion of white cornerbacks and wide receivers and running backs who obviously deserved scholarships from big time schools but never got them for their wrong color are legion.

Incidentally, Steve Sailer did a little research recently, and found that of the few white American men playing in the NBA, they attended high schools that are (or were at the time they went there) either almost all white or hardly black. The conclusion is obvious: Because blacks weren’t at the school, they didn’t dominate the basketball team in vast disproportion to their numbers. This means that whites actually got a chance to make the team and grow and develop, without “master race” blacks eclipsing them.

Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Danny Ainge wouldn’t have a prayer today.

          • Earl P. Holt III

By the time players get to the NFL, with the salaries the “speed” positions command, it doesn’t make a bit of difference what anyone did in high school (or even college, for that matter): The thing that matters most is your 40 yd dash speed (in pads) and your size and quickness. Guys with great reputations in college — even Heisman Trophy winners — are sometimes a bust at the professional level, because the ONLY thing that matters is your PERFORMANCE THERE.

Arguing that coaches show favoritism to more fully developed black athletes, at the expense of the psyches of white athletes — and that this psychological “hex” carries over even into professional football — sounds as ridiculous as the excuses a lot of the nigros carry with them their entire lives, about how “the white man never gave them a chance…”

I earned three varsity letters in high school football, and can tell you that I have competed against some world class athletes. The best athlete I ever knew was a 4-time all conference running back in college, who had won the EXTREMELY PRESTIGIOUS Golden West Invitational 440 Yard Intermediate Hurdles event while in High School. He was ferocious, and had a work ethic like no athlete I’ve ever known, and he is a black man.

He got a tryout with the Houston Oilers, but was cut because he could only run a 9.7 second hundred yard dash…

          • Earl P. Holt III

Larry Bird would be a superstar today, just like he was in the 1980s…(Google”Larry Bird’s Greatest Passes.”)

        • MBlanc46

I’ve seen (but can’t claim to have really understood) a paper on the differences in muscle structure and function between blacks and white. There appear to be real and substantial grounds for black superiority in running and jumping. I’d think that race realists would be willing to accept empirical evidence of racial difference wherever it’s found.

          • Ella

The usage of cars slow down our running speed and will to run faster between our villages, lol.

The history of oppression of blacks in the US. eg, a black kid might grow up in the suburbs in an intact family, educated parents, safe neighborhood, good schools etc, but his great- great- great- great- great- great- great-grandparents were enslaved, and this prevents him from understanding algebra and trigonometry.

      • Earl P. Holt III

They have to appear to be “doing something” to get the race hustlers off their back. $31M is probably a small price to pay. By the time the grant-receiving universities report their findings, the whole thing will have blown over. How long is it going to take to determine whether “hands-on scientific experience” in high school leads to more black science undergraduates? Years.

  • Another Guest

I don’t know where any of you live but I’d approximate the percentage of white doctors around here at maybe 10%. That’s not to say there are any significant number of black doctors.

  • Jacobite2

Unfortunately, back in the LBJ regime, the Labor Dept was ordered to issue a report listing jobs where performance was not impacted by differences in IQ. They could find not one job, no matter how simple, that wasn’t performed better by a person with a higher IQ than by one without. So, what will be the ultimate impact of this program? One (and I expect the one the Left is interested in) will be that nobody in his right mind will allow a non-white doctor or medical technician to treat him in lieu of a white. Racism again!!! And, yet again, ‘racism’ is equivalent to reality — that’s why whites are constantly being found guilty of it.

  • dewdly

The usual strategy is to simply lower the standards.

  • Earl P. Holt III

Excellent point, and right on the money…!

  • Who in their right mind really wants to see a black doctor? I recall that didn’t work out very well for Michael Jackson.

    • MBlanc46

I think that there should be black doctors to treat blacks. Unless one believes in the pipedream that blacks can be repatriated to Africa, one has to accept that they’re going to be here and are going to require medical care. I’m pretty sure that most of them feel more comfortable with a black doctor and I see no reason to not respect their preference. There used to be black only medical schools, and if I had my way, those would be re-established and supported.

      • Wouldn’t this simply drive up malpractice insurance costs across the board, i.e. for everyone?

        • MBlanc46

I’m not sufficiently expert regarding malpractice insurance to venture a guess, but separate medical and insurance systems ought to do the trick. Let them pay for their own doctors’ malpractice.

  • Joey Patton

Just 10%? Sounds like affirmative action already working in overdrive.

  • E. Newton

Elite whites want you, the regular guy, crushed like a bug. They hate and despise the ordinary white man and woman.

    • MBlanc46

At the very least, they no longer have any use for us. Now that they’ve got all those Chinese and Mexican workers, we’re surplus to requirements.

  • Earl P. Holt III

Interesting. When I was on the St. Louis School Board, I heard numerous complaints from white teachers that their black students “wake up to a new day every day.”

That is, the teachers could drill concepts into their craniums all day, but the effort would ultimately be futile, because it was lost overnight…
