Teacher Group: Math Is ‘the Domain of Old, White Men’

Danette Clark, EAG News, September 12, 2014

According to a Teach for America website, culturally responsive teaching in math is important because “math has traditionally been seen as the domain of old, White men.”

As reported earlier this week, Teach for America groups across the country are committing themselves to “culturally responsive teaching,” a radical pedagogy used by communist Bill Ayers and other blatant anti-American indoctrinators.

The site, Culturally Responsive Teaching, Teach for America, says that because math is seen as a domain for old, white men, many students cannot identify with it. Therefore, educators should find ways to relate math to the lives of their students.

Judging from the math curriculum recommended, this TFA group, like all other social justice educators, wants minorities to believe that what relates most to their lives in America is racism and oppression.

For example, the site recommends “Critically Conscious Mathematics” and “Radical Math.”

Radical Math was created by educator Jonathan Osler several years ago while teaching at El Puenta Academy in New Jersey. Osler taught Radical Math along-side Cathy Wilkerson, a former member of the Weather Underground Organization (with Bill Ayers) who once participated in a plot to detonate a nail bomb at a dance for military personnel at Fort Dix.

Radical Math provides hundreds of social justice math lessons obviously meant to indoctrinate. For example, lesson titles include “Sweatshop Accounting,” “Racism and Stop and Frisk,” “When Equal Isn’t Fair,” “The Square Root of a Fair Share” and “Home Buying While Brown or Black.”

{snip}

Astonishingly, in proudly promoting ‘cultural competence’ and ‘critical consciousness’ in education, the TFA website’s home page links to a Wikipedia definition of critical consciousness that describes it as a concept developed by Paulo Freire and grounded in post-Marxist critical theory.

{snip}

If Teach for America, as a whole, does not agree with the content of this particular website that bears its name, now would be a good time to say so. {snip}

More leftist insanity. Calling math the domain of old white men is similar to the Third Reich’s condemnation of “Jewish” physics. Such idiots can only think in the narrowist political terms.

    • Yes it dose. there are many things being called too white that echo’s the same mentality, sad that it would appear that many don’t see it….Some do with disgust. but many seem to be very clueless to it.

    • APaige

I always thought math was the domain of young geniuses that excel to the point I never could. It just so happens that genius-level IQ is much more common in Whites and Asians.

    • Sick of it

Do you have any idea what all those “idiotic” scientists in Germany invented or had on the drawing board? Meanwhile our universities and laboratories are filled with “scientists” who say nothing can be done better.

      • tetrapod

I did not call the German scientists “idiots”. What I actually had in mind is captured in the following anecdote involving David Hilbert, a non-Jew regarded by many as the greatest mathematician of the 20th century.

… At a banquet, the [Nazi] minister of education asked Hilbert, “And how is mathematics in Gottingen now that it has been freed of the Jewish influence?” Hilbert replied, “Mathematics in Gottingen? There is really none any more.” …

I was attacking a narrow-mindedness that thinks something as transcendent as math could be nullified by PC references to old white men. Those are the idiots I was talking about.

        • The Worlds Scapegoat

Yea right. There was no math in Germany during Hitler’s time.

Jews controlled Germany from WWI to just after Hitler was elected, yet there was no major scientific advancements, but there was an astornomical advancment in homosexuality, perversion, and corruption.

Jews controlled the Soviet Union from the time of the Bolshevik revolution until the Berlin Wall came down. There was no major scientific advancement during that time, and everything was copied from the West.

Israel receives more money from white countries than all other countries combined. If that is a sign of intelligence then negros make Einstein look like retard.

“Jewish physics” turned out to be nuclear physics; and germany avoided the product of nuclear physics by a few months. Japan wasn’t so fortunate.

      • bilderbuster

To the eternal dismay of the peace loving Jewish atomic scientists I’m sure.

I can see you’re still upset about that too.

      • The Worlds Scapegoat

If Germany knew nothing about nuclear physics, why did Germany send several hundred pounds of U-235 to Japan just before the end of the war?

        www[dot]youtube[dot]com/watch?v=nzT2yyP_q24

Why did Oppenheimer need non-jewish engineers to come up with different ideas on how to build the bomb so he could decide which ones to use? If he was the inventor, he wouldn’t need non-jews to come up with the idea. This is like saying Von Braun needed negros to come up with different ideas to build the Saturn V.

Why did Edward Teller run away from Bikini Atoll and hide underground at Berkeley University because he was afraid his H-bomb wouldn’t work? Howard Hughes didn’t go and hide when his planes were test flown.

Why did Soviet jewish spies need to steal American nuclear secrets if they were so smart?

Here is another one. Germans supposedly needed jewish slaves to build V2 rockets, but the US never thought about using those jewish slaves [sic] to design and build rockets for the military. Maybe if the US used the jewish slaves [sic] we might have beat the jewish Soviets into space. Making the preposterous claim that Germans used jewish slaves to build V2 rockets is akin to claiming Stanford University Medical Center uses negro inmates from San Quentin to perform brain surgery.

        .

    • plaintruthforidiots

LOL at your attempt to sully the name of the German people, the most recent country to expel the Jews who were destroying them… (along with the previous 108 countries they’ve been expelled from.) The Jews are our misfortune. Never trust the fox on the heath, nor the Jew on his oath. The Jew cries out in pain as he strikes you…

    Q. How many blacks constitute a flash mob?
    Q. How many blacks does it take to knockout an ‘old White man’?
    Q. How many blacks in my classroom have IQs over 75?
    Q. How many blacks does it take to smoke a blunt?
    Q. How many blacks are being ‘oppressed’ by ‘racism’ today?

    • Adolf Verloc

“D’Mentia has a case of 40-ouncers. If he trades 4 of them to B’Dacious for some blunts, how many does he have left?”

      • MekongDelta69

        My White answer:
In my day (in the Paleolithic Era), a case of beer was 24. But these days, a ‘case’ of ‘fotys’ is 12. So that means D’Mentia would have 8 ‘fotys’ left.

        Black answer:
        “Wutz fo’ meen?”
        [Ebonic Translation – “What’s “4” mean?”]

    • bilderbuster

They will have even dumber “math problems” than your examples and the funny thing about all of this will be that the Blacks will still come up with the wrong answers.
Then they will blame it on the racist way Blacks are taught to read.
Will Malcolm X comic books be next for Black high schools?

      • texasoysterman

“Will malcolm x comic books be next for black high schools?”
Yes, maybe. But only with pictures, no words.

        • bilderbuster

When I was in high school I would sometimes amuse myself when I finished a test early by watching the Blacks in the classroom.
They would be struggling with their tests while moving their lips when they were silently reading and rereading the questions that had them baffled.

          • anony

That’s where you’re wrong…assuming they were moving their lips while reading.

Sorry, but that’s just too good not to steal!

      • I borrowed it from “CH”.com.
        It’s a classic!

  • My oh my. The Can’t Teach for America social justice dingbats have a new novel way of teaching math.

By peddling a bunch of anti-white racial agitprop, adding in a little bit of applied arithmetic, and boom, you’ve bot math.

Which means math isn’t math anymore. Though that’s not a surprise to me; they tried socially conscious sidebars to pander to non-whites, but take it from me — All the socially conscious sidebars in the world about how a mulatto scientist solved a differential equation to make peanut goop isn’t going to help you solve a differential equation if you don’t have the ability to do so.

CTFA is right when they say that math is the “domain of old white men,” (actually, younger to middle aged white men, with some East Asian men thrown in for good measure), because it is that most abstract and binary right-wrong of disciplines wherein very high IQs are necessary for success in the field. In that case, hooray for old white men.

    • APaige

The following is a quote from the website:
“Classroom teachers and other educators need to understand that achievement, or lack thereof, is an experience of an accomplishment. It is not the totality of a student’s personal identity, or the essence of his or her human worth.”

Young minorities do not. It aggravates them.
      Hence the insults.

Incas and Mayans supposedly build pyramids, but somehow they didn’t need math to do it.

        .

        • 1stworlder

An Asian or white child can build pyramids out of legos before they can do math.

          • The Worlds Scapegoat

You do realize that the Mayan pyramids are not 6 inches tall.

I would love to see you or the other posters below build a pyramid without math.

        • CourtneyfromAlabama

A pyramid is the easiest way to build a structure. A lot of civilizations barely north of the equator seemed to use the model.

          • TruthBeTold

A pyramid looks like a mountain or something that forms when you poor a loose solid into a pile. The symbolism of the mountain, earth reaching into heaven, is universal.

    • TruthBeTold

I started hearing about ‘old dead white men’ on currency in the ’90s so it likely began before then. It was used by rappers to talk about money; ie, ‘gonna get me some dead Presidents’.

  • dd121

If you really want to know who can do math, it’s really the domain of YOUNG white men.

    • Adolf Verloc

Yep, mathematicians age even faster than gymnasts. The number of world-class mathematicians who did their best work in their twenties is staggering. And it is almost all young white men (Ramanujan excepted.)

      • The Worlds Scapegoat

There are a lot on non-whites who are good at math. The problem is that math by itself is almost useless. You have to be able to use it to make something. Without an idea to build something, math has almost no purpose.

        .

        • ElComadreja

Those non-whites are almost without exception Asians or Orientals.

        • Define “good at math.”

  • Mary

Well, thank God for all those reviled “old White men.” If not for their intelligence, bravery, and ingenuity, we’d likely still be stuck in medieval ignorance and squalor. So instead of expressing a shred of gratitude, for even old men of the past if not current ones, the “enlightened” wish to destroy White men altogether.

  • Alexandra1973

Old white men believe 2+2=4. Nowadays it can equal anything you want, but try to avoid 4.

    • APaige

That’s true, but even 2+2 B fo would be ‘acceptable’.

    • bilderbuster

      Words can mean anything too.
At Barry Soetoro Middle School the teacher asked lil ‘Treyvon to use the word “Before” in a sentence.
Lil’ Treyvon thought for a moment then said “Two and two before”.

I’d love to see a film where one of these anti-Whites has an “It’s a Wonderful Life”-type experience. The main character gets to experience a world where those “evil” White people never existed. This would be a short film, of course, because within five minutes he’d be begging to return to the real world.

    • OS-Q

Just record the Peace Corps in some African hell-hole. The colonial infrastructure is gone by now in many places.

  • Tarczan

I went to their website and just couldn’t understand what math concepts they are trying to teach. They just have a bunch of flow charts, no math at all. A lot of teachers are pretty smart and will instantly see through this nonsense. I don’t see how any intelligent person could subscribe to this total farce. Of course, I know people who actually believe blacks do poorly in school because of slavery, so anything is possible.

It just seems like a way to explain the terrible math scores blacks have. All it will do is cause further harm.

    • “No math at all”

That’s the point. Since blacks have a hard time with mathematics that are in any way abstract, the thing to do is to get rid of math, and slide in its place a whole conga line of social justice gibberish with some simple arithmetic on the side, and call it “math class.”

Physics class? No, you play basketball, and during at time out, you have to listen to some smart guy talk about -9.8m/s^2 being relevant to the hang time of basketball shots. Everybody gets an A.

Literature? They can’t read, so they’ll watch Roots instead of reading it. Then they’ll get the printed books; if they can read as much as one word from the book, they’ll get an A.

      • Mark

And after the “graduation” they get a government job. Perfect!

      • texasoysterman

Funny that you mention that about the negro relatives.
When my daughter graduated fron Penn State a few years ago, the audience was asked to withhold their applause while diplomas were handed out to the different groups until the end. Then everyone could applaud the entire groups accomplishment without drowning out the individuals name as it was announced.
This was too difficult a concept for the die-versity to grasp, so as each negro grad’s name was called out, huge numbers of their relatives jumped around hootin’ and hollerin’.
We couldn’t hear anything but that racket for 10 or 15 seconds each time.

        • Tarczan

The exact same thing happened at my sons’ high school graduation. The five darkies out of 700 ruined it for everyone.

          • Alexandra1973

At my high school graduation in 1991 they danced across the stage and the blacks in the crowd went wild.

        • Raydonn

We attended my nephews graduation from Ol Miss last year, same thing. In addition, there were a couple of negro ‘professors’ on stage, each time a black got their diploma, they’d stand up, hug them, high 5, etc……the white valedictorian, not a peep, they stayed seated and just nodded as they walked by. It was sickening to witness.

      • Nancy

I had 20-year-old black 12th graders unable to read anything above the level of “The Giver”, a 4th/5th grade book when I taught it in other (white) private schools. Any other mandatory reading (To Kill A Mockingbird, etc.) I had to read aloud to the class, wasting precious class time that needed to be spent on other important English topics, such as “How To Locate The Predicate in a Sentence”, “What is a Linking Verb?”, and “The Difference Between Their, There, and They’re”.

        • Diana Moon Glampers

“The Difference Between Their, There, and They’re”

This lesson is not needed for black students. Those words are: Dey, Dare, and Dey Be. They do not sound anything alike in Ebonics.

    • Adolf Verloc

TFA is a truly vile organization, providing newly graduated leftist liberal arts students to enable school districts to replace veteran teachers. My daughter, who is not an ed school graduate, looked briefly at their literature and said “how could anybody claim to teach you to teach in five weeks?” How, indeed?

      • Nancy

I taught in two different black schools, and never met any TFA teachers. In the Atlanta Public Schools, all veteran teachers had tenure, which means it would take an act of Congress to fire them. Likely the TFA’s are either scooting in to positions left by retiring teachers, or taking the positions of non-tenured newer teachers (like me) who, after a couple of years of that mayhem, resigned before earning their renewable certificate.

Academia can’t accept the fact that blacks cannot learn at a standard level as other groups can. And that they’re especially backward when it comes to reading comprehension, understanding abstract concepts, and doing math….even basic math.

So they work night and day coming up with one ludicrous scheme after another to close the achievement gap. The most bizarre schemes imaginable are attempted by these foolish people, and the result has been a dumbing down of all non-black students to accommodate 13% of the population that should be in special education classes.

And when all their failed schemes don’t work, they’re not discouraged, they just come up with another hare-brained idea.

So did I, NC, but I confess the presence of a mild obsession with numbers.
All it takes is a random glance at some numerical configuration and this brain engages reflexively, and without my conscious awareness, to set up an equation. Whether presented as a problem or not is inconsequential.

I have a bit of that myself. It’s very easy for me to memorize license plate numbers. I opened a new back account not too long ago and by the end of the day I had the number memorized.

My son might have that too.

As a mom with elementary school children, those pictures turn my stomach. I send them to school, but teach math at home. We haven’t had any pushback from teachers when we send math homework in with correct answers derived from traditional methods. I have written the occasional snark next to them, especially on problems with vague wording and unpronounceable names. All word problems include crazy ethnic names now. I tell my kids the truth about them. Someday, child protective services will have the power to abduct children who have been taught the truth, or are not sent to the indoctrination center. I am glad we aren’t there yet.

            indoctrination center.”

We need to get busy to see that this never happens. It’s going to be a rough row to hoe, but the future of Western civilization depends on it.

          • newscomments70

I remember the 70s and 80s; the word problems referred to policemen, firemen, and soldiers as “she”. That was our indoctrination.

      • Sick of it

Black geeks have it rather rough in their community.

        • cherrie greenbaum123

It makes for a very lonely life for them. I’ve seen it. They are totally shunned at an early age. One black student told me that “Marquarilus was mocking her.” She was quite pissed off about it. She was prim and proper, and bright. Her vocabulary and comprehension were far above her peers. And they mocked her. Blacks don’t value intelligence. It’s literally something they don’t have and can’t appreciate. It scares them when they see one of their own (usually mullato) “act white” and use the discernment and and character of whites. It’s a primate species that never evolved, sadly.

          • Samuel Hathaway

So, mullatos are “evolving” from the primate species that make fun of their academic intelligence? Is this an argument for miscegenation?

          • tetrapod

Hate to say it but the majority of whites don’t seem to value intelligence either. White discrimination against other intelligent whites, while not as blatantly cruel as that of blacks, is still present. I vividly recall a neighbor’s teenage baseball-star son looking at me incredulously while almost spitting the question: “You mean you read books?”

          • ncpride

Perhaps it’s not so much that we don’t value intelligence, but rather take it for granted..?

          • dmxinc

No, it’s always been this way in group school settings.

I didn’t want other guys to think I was smart, because they would think I couldn’t play sports (elementary and middle school).

Sad that this is part of the white culture too and has been for decades. We still seem to have risen above it, but we would probably be doing far better as a society if intelligence had been held in higher esteem as it used to be.

      • Samuel Hathaway

However, they still vote for Obama, and really aren’t particularly interested in George Washington’s birthday being re-instated as a holiday.
And when they grow up, they will gladly take racial preferences from my white nieces and nephews, EVEN if it was demonstrated that their qualifications were a few notches below the white applicants.
So, no, I don’t feel sympathy for them.

      • tetrapod

I knew a very bright, studious black kid in Jr High. He was at least 6’4″ and built like an NFL running back. He was also neurotic as hell and painfully uncomfortable in his own skin. One can only imagine how he was treated in the ‘hood by D’Antron and L’Atrina.

      • dd121

The really bright blacks that I’ve know were in the IQ 120 range. When it comes to brightness, that’s really pretty dull.

        • Anonymous

Are you serious? I went to a high school that was 93% White and the average IQ was 118. By your standards, 118 is retarded. It is not. Even 100 is not retarded.

      • Nancy

Those little simians relentlessly picked on and teased those students. They called one boy in my class “Steve Urkel” every day, because his father was a high-ranking military officer and he was disciplined to behave in school properly. To them, that translated into “nerdy white sell-out”.

    • Max

Number one, they refuse to call it what it is: an IQ gap. They therefore continue seeking impossible solutions to an improperly described problem.

    • Nancy

And this has been going on for decades. Back in 1990, I had to attend a two-day conference for my “continuing education” hours required each year for teachers. It was in a downtown Atlanta black high school, and was all about “blacks self-esteem and identity”. It had us bring EVERY subject back to “Blackness”: they were proposing concepts like the “black Egyptians”, black inventors, black music (the rhythm in music is “math”), Kwanzaa, and wearing kente cloth to school. They even said that Jesus was black.

  • Bon, From the Land of Babble

Old, outdated confusing White way to solve 9 + 6:

    9 + 6 = 15

    (and ONLY 15).

New, improved, non-White method of solving 9 + 6 as explained by Common Core:

“Our young learners might not be all together comfortable thinking about what 9 plus 6 is. They are quite comfortable thinking about their friend 10. 10 is emphasized in our young grades as we are working in a base-10 system. So if we can partner 9 to a number and anchor 10, we can help our students see what 9 plus 6 is.

So, we are going to decompose our 6 and we know 6 is made up of parts. One of its parts is a 1 and the other part is a 5. We are now going to anchor our 9 to a 1, allowing students to anchor to that 10. Now our students are seeing that we have 10 plus 5. Having them now more comfort seeing that 10 plus 5 is 15. That is much more comfortable than looking at 9 plus 6, an isolated math fact.”

Now, doesn’t that make so much more sense?

I guess you have to be non-White to get it.

    • Max

Looks like you’ve been to the land of babble.

      • Bon, From the Land of Babble

Max, I LIVE and WORK in the Land of Babble.

    • MBlanc46

All right, for those who really don’t have the mental equipment to just memorize that 9+6=15, this isn’t a bad way to get there. Those people may very well need at some point in their lives to be able to add 9 and 16, and if this works, more power to them. I never buy the “For Dummies” books because I won’t have some cashier think that I think I’m a dummy. But we might actually need “Math for Dummies”. It’s not because math is for “old white guys” (although most of the people who created it were white guys–although mostly younger white guys), but because math is hard for dummies and some dummies might have to master at least addition and subtraction. Just separate out the dummies (we used to call it tracking), teach them as much math as we need to any way we can, and leave real mathematics to the whites and Asians.

      • Bon, From the Land of Babble

Well, see that’s the problem: Tracking is considered RACIST for obvious reasons. The vast majority of those who cannot learn that 9+6= 15 are blacks and browns and education now is geared toward teaching to them, to teaching to the lowest common denominator.

Your smart White child will be used as a tutor if he finds himself stuck in such a class – which is nearly ALL classes now in public schools; there has been a massive push to eliminate honors and AP classes – once havens for smart White kids – because they’re “too White.”

The only solution for White parents is to get your kids OUT of the public schools, NOW and don’t look back. Find a good private school or, better, home school if possible, otherwise your White child will be indoctrinated with leftist propaganda and taught to believe that his people were nothing more than barbaric tyrants, thieves, rapists, enslavers, warmongers & conquerors with absolutely no redeeming qualities.

        • MBlanc46

Fortunately, the public schools in my area are still mostly white. Grade inflation and a certain amount of PC indoctrination are very likely problems, but they’re not all that different from the schools in which I got a more than adequate education. Not too far from here to the north, however, where the blacks have taken over, it’s an entirely different story.

      • Alexandra1973

When I was in elementary school we had addition and multiplication tables.

        • MBlanc46

And you have to memorize them (aside from using your fingers and toes). People of at least average intelligence have no difficulty doing that. Beyond the tables, math is a matter of logic. Alas, blacks have trouble with both memorizing and logic.

  • DLRisVH

So wait, 2+2=hands on the car and spread em?

  • MBlanc46

If that’s the case, then why do Asians do so well at it? I don’t know if there’s any serious empirical research on the IQ necessary do grasp mathematics, but it can’t be in the 85-90 range. I majored in mathematics at a small liberal arts college. I aced my courses, but a lot of that was hard work. I remember memorizing the proofs of the two dozen or so theorems from which the prof said the questions on the real analysis final would be selected. I did understood the principles behind the theorems, but there’s often a move–like a chess opening–that you need to know to to prove the result, so I made sure I memorized the move for each theorem. There were nine theorems on the exam and one problem. Fortunately the trick for the problem was easy to suss, so I got 100% on the final. I scored above the 50th percentile in the annual Putnam undergrad math exam (I forget the exact rank, so I’m underestimating). What I’m leading up to is that I wasn’t too bad. But, I was pretty certain that I didn’t have what it took to be a serious research mathematician, so I declined to apply for the position in grad school that the department head was pushing me to take. The only IQ test that I’ve taken was in primary school. I came in at about 125-130. Perhaps those with lower IQs could succeed at undergrad maths, but I’m skeptical. Not many Negroes in that range. Not many Negroes get beyond elementary arithmetic. I doubt that that’s coincidence.

    • The Mexican doctorates who ran my former university had what I estimate to be IQs in the 90 to 100 range, in fields like social work and history. The university, despite rolling in money, always ranks near the bottom of the Forbes rankings of American universities.

Correlation? Methinks that be the case. You would be a freaking genius compared to some of the recent doctorates I encountered. The education PH.D.s are the worst.

      • Tarczan

One time one of my darkie tenants was taking a course at the local community college, and telling me how smart his instructor was. The instructor had a Master’s degree and was himself a darkie. My tenant showed me some writing and published class notes from the instructor. They were unreadable, completely garbled gibberish. I was honestly amazed that someone teaching a college level course could have such poor writing skills. it was one of many incidences that lead to my racial awakening.

        • MBlanc46

Seeing writing by black high school students (comparable to what I and my classmates could do in early primary school) was the first step on my path to race realism, as well. If you have any significant contact with blacks, you have to be in willful denial to not see that they’re not as intelligent as whites.

    • dukem1

Asian students are grinders, to answer your question.
Nothing wrong with being a grinder, I’d say the world needs ’em…seems to keep them out of trouble, so, there’s that, too.

      • MBlanc46

I suspect that their 105 average IQ has something to do with it.

  • Bill Ayers, et .al., should have spent his life in prison, not on the faculty of an urban university. He’s murdering scum. In fact, it’s too bad he didn’t die in a shootout with the police, but I guess cowards die with their boots off.

This story just adds fuel to the argument that white, conservative, traditional, and Christian parents MUST homeschool. Go on welfare if you need to in order to make that work for you, but do not allow any white child to be so corrupted as described here.

Also, ALWAYS vote against school bond issues. There’s plenty of money in schools to teach the basics, but they want more money to fund social engineering programs. Starve them.

One anecdote was that his grade school teacher wanted to keep the class occupied for awhile, so he asked them to give the sum of numbers from 1 to 100. Gauss, in a quick moment devised the scheme of adding 100 + 1=101, 99 +2=101, 98 +3=101. Fifty pairs times 101 + 5050. He did endless logarithms in his head.

” You think knowledge is to be got cheap–you’ll come and pay Bartle Massey sixpence a-week, and he’ll make you clever at figures without your taking any trouble. But knowledge isn’t to be got with paying sixpence, let me tell you. If you’re to know figures, you must turn ’em over in your heads and keep your thoughts fixed on ’em. There’s nothing you can’t turn into a sum, for there’s nothing but what’s got number in it–even a fool. You may say to yourselves, ‘I’m one fool, and Jack’s another; if my fool’s head weighed four pound, and Jack’s three pound three ounces and three quarters, how many pennyweights heavier would my head be than Jack’s?’ A man that had got his heart in learning figures would make sums for himself and work ’em in his head. When he sat at his shoemaking, he’d count his stitches by fives, and then put a price on his stitches, say half a farthing, and then see how much money he could get in an hour; and then ask himself how much money he’d get in a day at that rate; and then how much ten workmen would get working three, or twenty, or a hundred years at that rate–and all the while his needle would be going just as fast as if he left his head empty for the devil to dance in. But the long and the short of it is–I’ll have nobody in my night-school that doesn’t strive to learn what he comes to learn, as hard as if he was striving to get out of a dark hole into broad daylight. I’ll send no man away because he’s stupid: if Billy Taft, the idiot, wanted to learn anything, I’d not refuse to teach him. But I’ll not throw away good knowledge on people who think they can get it by the sixpenn’orth, and carry it away with ’em as they would an ounce of snuff. So never come to me again, if you can’t show that you’ve been working with your own heads, instead of thinking that you can pay for mine to work for you. That’s the last word I’ve got to say to you.”

The highest level of mathematics is indeed dominated by white men, however, this has little relevance to high school maths. The 2014 US International Mathematics Olympiad team consisted of 4 East Asians, 1 South Asian, and 1 Caucasian. This utterly dispels the idea that minorities are being discriminated against. Anyone with a “critical consciousness” will realize the importance of genetic differences.

    • Ultimate187

      Not the right minorities.

I am totally fine with the black and brown hordes leaving mathematics to the whites (and to a lesser extent, yellows). Who wouldn’t celebrate with schadenfreude the morons further inhibiting themselves?

    • De Doc

Unfortunately it won’t stop there, because to have other kids with higher perceived skills in mathematics is just not fair!

      • SolStans

That’s when we bust out some pseudo-math and tell the darling little cocoa pebbles that their IQs, adjusted for their birth defect, places them a standard deviation or two above the middle Twix bar. Because of that, they’re above average/borderline “gizzenius”, and can thus stop their white man math lessons.

We can then give them a mental trophy (or is it mental atrophy?) and encourage them to invent the next peanut butter-powered stop light.

  • Malgus

Maths are the keys to the kingdom. Master mathematics, you can master anything else.

Unfortunately, those who historically have low mental horsepower will never master mathematics, no matter how you dress it up or which Communist teaches it “radically”…

Those who command mathematics are Masters of the Freakin’ Universe. That means US.

    Too bad for the Diversities…

  • Bill

Mathematics are absolute, and universal. 2+2=4 here as well as across the galaxy (at least, I think). So the only reason to change the instruction of math, would be because the students were either younger, older, smarter, or dumber.
Therefore, the smart thing to do would be for educators to just admit they had less intelligent students.
It’s mind-boggling to think these people could associate racism and oppression to math.

  • CourtneyfromAlabama

Wait a minute, I thought arabs and Hindus were the best at math (or so we keep getting told).

    • Alexandra1973

According to the guy in the movie “Stand and Deliver” the Mayans came up with the concept of zero. I don’t know if it’s true or not.

      • TruthBeTold

Zero appears in ancient Egypt and India and many people discovered it for themselves.

It really only came into it’s own with the use of decimal numbers. The Greeks and Romans got along fine without it.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Mayans used zero but as I said, most cultures that used math eventually discovered it on their own.

        • Malgus

Interesting in that you state the concept of zero came into its own with the use of decimal numbers, then say that the Greeks got along fine without it.

What’s interesting is that the Greeks came up with the Golden Ratio, which is the perfect ratio of something to be optically pleasing. The Golden Ratio is 1.61:1 The Parthenon is built using this ratio, and Phidias used it to make the Parthenon’s statues as well.

Fibonacci worked it out 1500 years later (give or take) in his “Fibonacci Sequence” of ratios…

(The only reason I know about it is because I crafted a Fibonacci Gauge. Measure one length, and it automatically scales other lengths to their proper proportion without calculations)
          .
Not arguing with you. I actually agree with you. Just saying it’s interesting that the Greeks used decimals, yet had no concept of “zero”…

          • Do you mean by the Golden Ratio the number of kilometers in a mile? There are 1.61 km per mile. That may be where the number comes from…

          • Malgus

No, I don’t think so. The metric system had not been invented when the Greeks came up with the Golden Ratio. The golden ratio started, I believe, with measuring parts of the body and comparing them to larger parts – like the first digit of a finger when compared to the next two. The “perfect” ratio optically is 1.61 to 1.

Let’s say you have a box. The ‘perfect’ box, optically, is one that has the short side – height – being considered “one”, and the length being 1.61 of whatever the height is. Example, I want to build a box 12″ tall. Applying the Golden Ratio, it would need to be 19.32 inches long. Or, about 19 and 5/16ths of an inch (I rounded down, but there’s not much difference between 5/16ths and 21/64ths when you’re cutting wood).

  • 2 + 2 = 4 is racist? Who knew?

  • Douglas Quaid

I remember how they were slipping multi-cultural nonsense into math even when I was a kid. We would get word problems with names of people that were ridiculously non-European. It was names like, “Gomez, Hasiana, Keisha, and Trayvon.” So a problem would read something like, “Keisha has five apples, she sold 3 apples to Gomez for .25 cents each, how much money did she get in total?”

Even that level of multicultural idiocy wasn’t enough apparently. Too much real math frustrating certain demographics I suppose.

    • phillyguy

Douglas the problem should have started out by stating Keisha gots 5 kids, she just got knocked up with twins by a dude she knew for 5 minutes, how much in food stamps is Keisha gonna receive in a month?

      • Leon NJ

        That’s harsh…but funny!

    • Yancy Derringer

So Keisha was due a total of three-quarters of one cent. How was she paid? She might as well have sold them four for a penny.

      • The US made half cent pieces from the opening of the US mint regular coinage in 1793 until they were discontinued in 1857. They were about the size of a quarter & pure copper. Now the quarter cent would be a problem unless you cut one in half.

Britain’s penney was worth 2 cents US and they made farthings and quarter farthings worth about 1/2 & 1/8 cents each. Thus the correct answer is one US half cent + two British quarter farthings.

in proudly promoting ‘cultural competence’ and ‘critical consciousness’ in education…a concept developed by Paulo Freire and grounded in post-Marxist critical theory.

    And there you have it.

“Culturally Responsible Teaching,” AKA Common Core is a social engineering experiment.

David Coleman, the architect of Common Core has never been a classroom teacher. He believes there has been massive social injustice in this country, that education is the engine of social justice and that school curriculum should be designed to address political-social changes.

Common Core is designed specifically to dumb down the masses. It teaches the broadest, most rudimentary math and reading skills to students while telling them, their parents and the public that they are learning, important, complex, “real-world” skills using higher-order, cognitive thinking.

Naturally, those who push Common Core won’t have their own children dumbed down and infused with leftist propaganda and government indoctrination.

Coleman’s next plan of action is to change Advanced Placement high school courses – the last refuge of intelligent White high school students – and their curriculum.

    • De Doc

You got that right. They can’t stand any perceived inequality in the system. At first they benignly sell it as needed to make the ‘others’ understand better, then they eventually give up and dumb it down for everyone, because to be differently abled in matters of learning is just not fair!

  • TruthBeTold

I know they’ve tried using rap to get blacks interested in math.

I guess that’s another one that didn’t pan out.

Why not just hand out high school diplomas to 6 year olds and let them play basketball for 12 years; then hand them their doctorate, and demand they be employed. Who would know the difference?

      • dd121

That’s pretty much what’s being done now, except they withhold the degree for a bit longer.

  • IstvanIN

I just realized something terribly confusing: I am bad at math and I am an old, White man. So, does this mean I am good at math or have I turned colored? Good golly Miss Molly!

    • dd121

I guarantee you’re better at math than old black men. They can toy with different methods of teaching it, but only with IQ and motivation will the subject be learned. That will always be whites and asians.

  • Chris

With “teaching” programs like this, math will remain the domain of white men, and I’m just fine with that. The intelligence and overall cognitive abilities required to solve mathematical equations is simply beyond the grasp of non-whites, except for Asians. It does, however, undermine the left’s attempt to give credit to non-white civilizations for basically inventing math. The left loves to claim the Mayan’s, the Arabs, even Africans invented the earliest mathematical concepts. Then it was stolen by the Greeks (Greek homos according to Sharpton) and spread around what became western civilization. Nobody said leftist indoctrination has to make sense.

a European explorer (presumably Francis Galton, the man who invented eugenics) agrees to trade an African shepherd two sticks of tobacco in exchange for one sheep.

That’s from the CRT website. Already we are at retard level here. Sir Francis Galton merely coined the term “eugenics” but did not “invent” eugenics. Mother Nature invented eugenics. It’s called NATURAL SELECTION. These idiots would have these poor souls believe that some old evil white guy invented eugenics to oppress the black man.

    • OS-Q

Wha?! You can’t make this stuff up!

If Sir Galton visits my farm, he can have as much lamb as he likes.

      The full math situation:

… a European explorer (presumably Francis Galton, the man who
invented eugenics) agrees to trade an African shepherd two sticks of
tobacco in exchange for one sheep. When he offers four sticks of tobacco
in exchange for two sheep, however, the shepherd declines; the explorer
later tells this story as evidence of the shepherd’s inability to
comprehend simple mathematical reasoning and as “proof” of intellectual
inferiority on the African subcontinent. But, if sheep are not
standardized units, as there is no reason to believe them to be, then
doesn’t it make sense that the second sheep might be worth far more than
the first? And then doesn’t our premise of 2 + 2 = 4 look awfully
      naive?

This is economics and livestock husbandry territory. These B grade English majors need the boot.

  • SolStans

If you want a real eye-opener, try tutoring mid-level math. Granted, there’s a selection bias (those who suck at math more often come for tutoring), but jeez louise it’s scary that these kids will go on to be our future. I tutor online, so I don’t have to deal directly with the darlings, but I always know I’m in for a good session when Laquanda or Jarmielius signs in for “help”.
At least the upper-level math students aren’t too bad. You generally have to show an aptitude to get that far.

Excellent. Keep telling them that. I mean, it’s true, isn’t it? I mean, as far as blacks and hispanics are concerned, wouldn’t it be better if we just told them that math is White man magic? As is physics, chemistry, biology, technology. You know, EVERYTHING. White man magic! Let us return to the days when the blacks were in AWE of WHITES. I was involved in a “PC Refresh” ( replacing new PC’s for old PC’s ) project for the DC Public School system…

I was in a classroom at Anacostia High and as I was working, there was a class being held… The teacher asked the question : ” Which seed uses more O2… One in cold ground or one in warm ground ? ” A simple & correct answer ( the one in warm ground ) escaped them… They couldn’t grasp or comprehend the idea !

I commented to the teacher that I knew the answer and seeds usually sprout in the spring which is easily seen… She made excuses for them and she said that they’re “pre-engineering” !

All I could do was shake my head…

This also called to mind the time that I was at the Md.State Bldg. in Baltimore, applying for a job… I was asked by a fellow job applicant how to spell “Auditor”… I gave her the spelling. She thanked me saying : ” She needed to spell it so that she can be an auditor !”

Another head shaking moment for me…

      • TonyWestfield

And that job applicant meant it literally, Dale, in that she intended to “be” an auditor as contrasted with WORKING as an auditor…a bit of neurolinguistic symmetry in play, as the verb “to be” is the signature non-action verb in the English language.

  • shmo123

This reminds me of a great academic hoax from several years ago. Back in the nineties, a physics professor named Alan Sokal got some academic magazine to print an article entitled, “Transgressing the Boundries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity” where he stated, using a lot of academic jargon and nonsense, that there was no such thing as gravity. He intended it as a hoax, to see how far he could get appealing to the liberal ideologies of the editors. They either didn’t read the thing, or didn’t understand they were being played for fools, but they printed it. Radical math sounds like an equally smelly pile of rubbish.

    • TonyWestfield

Shmo, I remember it well. The publication was “Social Text,” which fancies itself as a “peer-reviewed” and very serious venue for academic discourse. In the spirit of “You had me at hello,” it is reasonable to assume that the pinheads who review the articles got a whiff of “a Transformative Hermeneutics” and they began instantly to swoon as only a post-modern liberal can, weak in the knees upon the moment of his/her own confusion–because for them, confusion is a positive virtue–then overwhelmed at the article, with its pathbreaking level of convoluted thinking, referring entirely to itself, touching base with nothing in the known, dependable universe. Priceless. This fellow, Sokal, is one of my heroes.

  • MarcB1969

“math has traditionally been seen as the domain of old, White men.”

So has civilization, particularly the Western variety…

    • TonyWestfield

Marc, your sense of the truth is pinpoint accurate, but there is a verbal sleight of hand here–a classic trick perpetrated by cultural Marxists–that deserves attention. Math and civilization (the qualifier “Western” is redundant, in my opinion, since there is only one lineage that deserves the name “Civilization”) have in fact NOT been seen traditionally as the domain of old White men or dead White males, etc..It is the Johnny-come-lately Marxist troublemakers who have pointed their spotlight on math and civilization and everything else decent in life, and they’ve been working 24/7/365 to promulgate their fairy tale about how evil it all is…and the bogeyman in the fairy tale is the White male, now out of favor, and ripe to be replaced, because he is “old” or “dead.” Math and civilization have (traditionally) been the water to the fish: We live in it, we use it, we absorb its elements–but we don’t “see” the water as a distinct thing because there was no “other” against which to observe it. Ironically, math and civilization used to be for everybody. It was there for the taking, whoever you may be, as long as you muster the energy and the brains to partake of it. The Marxists, who claim to be the angels of “inclusion,” have in fact ruined the general, diffuse quality of math and civilization and other fundamental creations. The Marxists have divided people into so many balkanized sub-units, each with its own self-justifying (and in most cases inferior) civilization or “culture,” and now, apparently, each with its own self-justifying inferior math.

The strength and ballast of tradition is on our side. The truth is on our side. The burden of proof, or persuasion, is on the shoulders of the Johnny-come-lately gang. Too bad they have made such substantial inroads. Let’s defeat them.

Thanks very much, but having spent better than thirty years in reference and scholarly publishing, I’m trying to ease into retirement. A few years ago in a used bookshop in Chicago, I came upon some books from the library of algebraist Saunders Mac Lane, coauthor of Birkhoff and Mac Lane’s influential “A Survey of Modern Algebra”. (The bookseller said he’d rescued what he could of Mac Lane’s library from the dumpster to which it had been consigned by Mac Lane’s heirs.) I looked hard at one of the books, I think it was a “Differential Topology”. I said to myself, “Hey, I could work through this after I retire”. But it was $50, and $50s were a bit scarcer in those days, so I passed on it. In retrospect, while I wish I had one of Mac Lane’s books in my library (it’s certainly possible that it would have appreciated in value), I’ve lost millions of brain cells since my days as a junior apprentice mathematician, and I’m probably past studying any serious mathematics. It’s really a young person’s (sorry, ladies, but for the most part, a young man’s) game. Majoring in mathematics is something I’ve never regretted, and I recommend it to anyone who’s got the intuition for it, but I’m also glad that I recognized that I was close to my limit and didn’t turn what had been an up-to-then successful enterprise into a failure,
