Liberia Troops Fire on Protesters as West Africa’s Ebola Toll Hits 1,350

Clair MacDougall and James Harding Giahyue, Reuters, August 27, 2014

Security forces in the Liberian capital fired live rounds and tear gas on Wednesday to disperse a stone-throwing crowd trying to break an Ebola quarantine imposed on their neighborhood, as the death toll from the epidemic in West Africa hit 1,350.

In the sprawling oceanfront West Point neighborhood of Monrovia, at least four people were injured in clashes with security forces, witnesses said. It was unclear whether anyone was wounded by the gunfire, though a Reuters photographer saw a young boy with his leg largely severed just above the ankle.

Liberian authorities introduced a nationwide curfew on Tuesday and put the West Point neighborhood under quarantine to curb the spread of the disease.

“The soldiers are using live rounds,” said army spokesman Dessaline Allison, adding: “The soldiers applied the rules of engagement. They did not fire on peaceful citizens. There will be medical reports if (an injury) was from bullet wounds.”

The World Health Organization said that the countries hit by the worst ever outbreak of the deadly virus were beginning to suffer shortages of fuel, food and basic supplies after shipping companies and airlines suspended services to the region.

Did they say Monrovia or DIE-Troit?

    (Same thing)…

    • APaige

Almost the same. In Monrovia the ‘security forces’ use real bullets. In the U.S they use rubber bullets. Yet, progressives complain about ‘White’ police brutality. (Another difference is that Detroit used to be great, Monrovia never was.)

More importantly, why is the capital of a proud African nation still named after a white man?

    • That’s an easy one to answer: White privilege, racism, de turrble, turrble legacy ob de colonialism, global warming, homophobia, the gun lobby, carbon, sexism, talk radio, police officer Darren Williams, the number “H” and the letter “41”.

Heck, these reasons make as much sense as the rest of the drivel we get out of the left.

      • Rhialto

        Carbon?

    • Paleoconn

Agree, they should call it Lincolnia.

That is the least of my concerns. I am inclined to feel empathy for people, but I cannot feel empathy for people who despise us no matter what we do.

    • APaige

I view empathy like Eric Holder…only for ‘my people.’

  • Again we see the MSM using the term “protesters” to describe rock-throwing rioters, this time rioters who – rather than being motivated by looting as in the case of Ferguson, MO – were attempting to assist the spread of a fatal, nearly incurable disease.

This just in from Monrovia: Locals have found a fairly sound cure for ebola: Cut off your left pinky, rape a virgin, smear cow dung on your forehead and sacrifice a rooster to the Joo-Joo god.

Now if they could only find a cure for Low IQ.

      • Nancy

“Cut off your left pinky, rape a virgin, smear cow dung on your forehead, and sacrifice a rooster for the Joo-Joo god”

In other words, an average Wednesday afternoon.

      • Paleoconn

Of course when that doesn’t work, you know the right pinky will be history too.

        • Luca

The major problem being getting them to know their right from their left. They have a 50 – 50 chance and after two tries they’ll get it right.

  • If an ebola outbreak hits the US, it will probably start in a black area. I have absolutely no doubt that the American Negro will behave as his African cousin.

Thus, as insurance, stock up on some masks and some bullets because Holder will not allow US cops to keep the blacks quarantined via shootings. They’ll break out and spread the disease.

I’ve been wondering about how the recent spate of zombie movies and TV shows is a subliminal reaction to the black and brown hordes coming at us, many with exotic diseases.

Well, say what you will about the Liberian government, shooting someone to death is a sure way to keep him from catching Ebola, if he hasn’t caught it already.

      • Nancy

Many people refer to the Zombie Apocalypse as “The Day the EBT Cards Run Out”. We sure do at our house.

      • 1stworlder

        ..How to recognize zombies:
        Bad smell
        Lacks intellect
        Attacks for no reason
        Creates nothing
        Known to attack in packs
        Spreads disease

I may be skirting thin ice here, but perhaps a widespread outbreak of a fatal disease is in the long-term interests of the people of sub-Saharan Africa. It’s clear that they can’t properly (or anything close to it) house and feed a very large proportion of the African population. In the medium term (half a century) the population is predicted to double. That would certainly lead to a catastrophe. Perhaps a catastrophe now would be considerably milder. As a former employer of mine used to say, “In a pay now or pay later situation, it’s almost always cheaper to pay now.” It might be cheaper for the African people to pay now. I’m not saying this out of callousness toward or hatred of Africans, merely to suggest that when there are no good outcomes, they might be better off taking the outcome they know rather than the unknown outcome a generation from now.

    • 1stworlder

If we keep sending them food and medicine the only thing we get is more Africans and more diseases white mans medicine cant cure

    • M.

The scale of the outbreak is way too small to have any effect on population size.

Just to give you a little perspective, the number of dead that disease has caused so far is less than 2,000. At the same time, the Liberian population alone has increased 87,740 since the beginning of 2014.

As long as the birthrates remain high, it doesn’t matter how many die, they will be replaced very quickly.

      • MBlanc46

Ebola. AIDS. Malaria. And dozens or hundreds more that I can’t think of off the top of my head. Plus good old-fashioned starvation. What I’m suggesting is that we allow Africa return to the status quo ante the contact with Europeans. Let food supply and disease return the population to a sustainable number. Better for the Africans. Better for us.

  • De Doc

Huh. You’d have thought that they would have made some effort to build infrastructure to allow for proper waste and sewage disposal and clean water. Lots of Darwin Awards being won in that part of the world.

  • Michigan Patriot

Nah; Philly is their destination; lots of sistas & bros there; had a huge neighborhood fire, some children died, that blamed the black run city & fire department for slow service. City stated that the fire trucks where there within 5 minutes of the call; must be faster service in Liberia. By the way; why are they back in racist America ? They left in the 1840’s for freedom from the white man; flip-floppers ! The evil White man society & his creature comforts aren’t so bad when contrasted with the black society they create anywhere; Haiti anyone ?

According to Drudge, dogs are digging up Ebola bodies from the too shallow graves. The bodies were buried by the “Health Service.”

    • I guess we will shortly find out if dogs can catch Ebola.

We already know that pigs in the Philippines have tested positive for Reston, but Reston doesn’t kill people (or pigs either, I guess.) These filoviruses at any rate, do show a marked ability to jump species.

  • They should immediately evacuate all the Ebola infected in Liberia to Rotherham in the UK.

Compare the behaviour described in the article with that of the villagers of Eyam in Derbyshire, England in 1665, who voluntarily remained quarantined while bubonic plague claimed at least 260 of them.

To quote from the Beautiful Britain web site:

“The Plague in Eyam raged for 14 months and claimed the lives of at least 260 villagers. By 1st November 1666 it had run its course and claimed its last victim. Eyam’s selfless villagers, with their strong Christian convictions, had shown immense personal courage and self sacrifice. They had prevented the plague from spreading to other parishes, but many paid the ultimate price for their commitment.”
