Two Female Football Fans Found Guilty of Ripping Up Pages from the Koran

Emma Glanfield, Daily Mail (London), May 1, 2014

Two female football fans ripped up pages from the Koran during a match before throwing them in the air ‘like confetti’ while chanting racist songs about Muslims, a court heard.

Middlesbrough FC supporters Julie Phillips, 50, and Gemma Parkin, 18, have been found guilty of using religiously aggravated threatening or insulting behaviour while watching their team’s away fixture against Birmingham City on December 7 last year.

Magistrates heard that 25 minutes into the second half, Philips pulled a copy of the Muslim holy book from her handbag and started ripping out the pages.

She then handed them out to other fans sitting in the stands at St Andrew’s stadium who began throwing the torn pages into the air.

Philips and Parkin also joined in with anti-Islamic chants about killing Muslims with a bayonet while others pretended to set the book on fire, the court heard.

The pair were convicted at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court today following a one-day trial.

During the trial, prosecutor Amar Sanghara told the court: ‘On that date Birmingham City Football Club were playing home against Middlesbrough.

‘There was a crowd of 13,454 and 655 were Middlesbrough fans who were standing in the stand behind the goal.

‘A club steward Matthew Corne was stood in the Gill Merrick stand. While there he observed fans ripping pages from a book.

‘They were also chanting words like “Muslim”, “Koran” and “bayonet”.

‘Mr Cornes asked them what they were doing and asked the control to get the CCTV cameras to monitor them.

‘The group were followed from the ground and then intercepted by the police.

‘Mrs Phillips was interviewed on January 17 by police when she admitted tearing up the Koran but said she had been handed the book and didn’t know what it was.’

The court heard the pair were among a group of around 20 fans who were chanting racist songs during the Championship league match, which went on to finish 2-2.

Giving evidence Matthew Cornes, who was part of the security response team at the game, said:

‘They were passing pages of the book around and tore the book up.

‘They were throwing them up in the air like confetti.

‘There was shouting going on and singing, I don’t know the words but it was about the Koran and they mentioned Muslims as well.

‘I had never heard chanting like that before.’

John Newbold was working as a steward in the away end on the day and also witnessed pages being ripped from the book.

He was on duty in the Gil Merrick stand at the time of the offence and told Birmingham Magistrates’

Court: ‘I was at the back of the stand, when I saw, about four rows in front of me, somebody ripping something up.

‘I went down and asked “what are you ripping up?”. The reply was “the Koran”.

“My mate was behind me so I asked him to radio it through to control to keep an eye on it and keep the cameras on them.

‘We followed them at the end of the game to the away car park where the police stopped them and had a word with them.’

Sentencing chair of the bench Gordon Sayers said: ‘Mrs Phillips we have seen clear CCTV evidence you ripped up the Koran and passed pages around the small group around you.

‘You waved pages and tore them up.

‘We are satisfied you were aware of what you were distributing.

‘We have seen you and Mr Newbold’s heads move enough for him to ask you and you to shout the Koran.

‘Other supporters seemed uncomfortable and this behaviour was in a large stadium with people of all nationalities.

‘We find your behaviour both abusive and insulting.

‘Miss Parkin we find your version of how you got the Koran unbelievable.

‘You ripped up the Koran and were well aware of what you were doing.’

Phillips was fined £300, told to pay court costs of £400 and a victim surcharge of £30, while Parkin was fined £200, and ordered to pay a further £420 in court costs.

Neither were banned from attending future football matches.

Earlier today, Phillips told the court she did not know what the book was at the time of the incident.

She said: ‘I can remember just being passed a book, I didn’t know what it was.

‘I tore it up like confetti as that is what people do at a football match.

‘As we left a policeman then came over and I was mortified when I heard it was the Koran. If I had known I would not have torn it.

‘I am old enough to know not to do something like that.

‘I certainly wouldn’t have done it because a lot of Muslims live in Birmingham.

‘There were no racist songs to my knowledge at all.’

If I had a Koran I would shred it one page at the time and pour bacon grease over it.

That’s how much I respect Islam.

    • David Ashton

You don’t live in the Motherland of Parliaments.
A really clever ripper here might just tear out only the pages about crucifying infidels, or prohibiting friendship with Christians and Jews. “I was only protesting against this offensive religious hatred and racial incitement, m’Lud.”

      • Pro_Whitey

Would you ask you judiciary and queens’ counsel how it can be racist to be anti-muslim when muslims can be of any race? But seriously, I would not want you to waste your time. Who needs to be rational when there’s a viewpoint to be suppressed? I’m not a betting man, but I’m guessing it’s a safe bet that those with the signs that say “Behead those who say islam is violent” don’t get called for racism, or anything else for that matter.

        • David Ashton

Your point about Islam is technically correct, but it would indeed cut little ice with those who claim that attacks on Muslims are a “cover” for attacks on Pakistanis and Bangladeshis.

Some years ago Lord Avon and our Upper House “liberals” tried to bring in legislation against “religious hatred” supposedly parallel to “racial hatred”, and invited submissions from the public. I sent in a carefully documented detailed critique, pointing out e.g. that “sacred texts” themselves expressed religious hostility (Koran, NT, Talmud); a fatal paradox for any legislation. The idea was eventually dropped, and submissions published. My reasoned and annotated objections were not excluded, and instead the printed booklet was crammed with pages of identical round-robin objections from Baptist churches claiming that (their fundamentalist) Christianity was The Truth, and that’s that, giving a false impression of the objectors to this assault on free speech.

I had a comparable experience years previously after a submission to Lord Scarman’s Inquiry following the Brixton Riots, including evidence of West Indian immigrant propensities to certain types of behavior and crime, and the role of leftist organisation in the attacks on the police, etc. My material was acknowledged in the Report, but actually returned to me unopened and therefore unread. Scarman took his cue from the US Kerner report, which was subsequently exposed by critics like Eugene Methvin.

Today (May 3) “Daily Mail” attacks UKIP because some supporter said in an internet debate that the parliamentary parties are changing the culture without permission from the indigenous white population, i.e. speaking truth to power, and only repeating in franker terms what the paper’s own writers – Littlejohn, Phillips, McKinstry, Hitchens, Heffer, etc – have said themselves in only slightly less guarded language.

“Deport those who say England is racist!” – how about that?

      • Anon

Yeah…..about that. That place no longer exists. I’ve had a number of people from over there comment to me the last few years that, when witnessing black and muslim crime, no one calls the cops because they routinely arrest the one calling them for “racism”. The criminals don’t get prison time but the “racists” do, especially if anything in the way of self defense, no matter how justifiable or how serious the threat, is involved. About a million white people flee that country every year citing various reasons that boil down to the country is no longer, safe, sane, or economically viable.

        • David Ashton

The scale you describe is exaggerated, but the points you make are valid. To “defend the British way of life” is “racism” and “racism” is evil and “evil” must be punished, etc.

    • I read the Koran when I was in prison, and left crumbs of pork rinds inside it.

“Two female football fans ripped up pages from the Koran during a match before throwing them in the air ‘like confetti’ while chanting racist songs about Muslims, a court heard.”

    And the problem here is???

    • Oil Can Harry

The problem is they’re being prosecuted- and by someone called Amar Sanghara, no less- for the crime of free expression.

      • ncpride

        More like persecuted.

    • Lagerstrom

      It wasn’t the Bible.

  • When Christ returns, the muslims remaining will burn their own Korans………

  • D.B. Cooper

I would also print the Koran onto a roll, and sell it.

  • DudeWheresMyCountry?

The worst part about this story is that the defendants tried to lie about their actions. They were already going to be fined, they should have stood their ground and raised the question… Why is this such a sensitive issue? Are you concerned Muslims will act uncivilized? Of course they are!

    • IstvanIN

      Or at least stood silent.

    • Moooochelle

If I were them, I would have worn an “I Love Bacon” shirt to my sentencing.

    • Epiminondas

WW2 shattered what was left of English self-confidence in any racial awareness. To make those sacrifices count for something in the war with Germany, England has swung to a hypersensitive stance on the subject of race and religion. The non-whites who live there are well aware of this strange psychological English profile and as you now see, they are taking full advantage of it. Hitler would have laughed, “I told you so.”

  • Padrig

But did they behead anyone in broad daylight? I’d say stopping shy of reciprocity is “heroic restraint” and deserving of a reward of some sort.

  • Andross

Be careful what you say here. The moderator apparently doesn’t like “koran” and “toilet paper” being juxtaposed in the same comment.

  • Luca

Has anyone seen the street demonstrations by Muslims in Britain and read the signs they carry and the slogans they chant? Most are explicit death threats.

But oddly, no law enforcement agency in Britain thinks those Muslims are being abusive or insulting, nor do they get carried into court and fined.

So, this is the brave New World Order? The words “disgusting and pathetic” do not begin to describe it.

    • Urbane Neanderthal

      Like these?

      • Luca

        That and worse.

        • DiversityIsDeath

You know what the difference is? As in this particular incident, it is only two white women the cops are arresting, compared to endless sea of angry, violent, white hating muslim men (like in that photo above). The cops are cowardly and scared, they wouldn’t DARE take those muzzies on. And that’s when fed up Whites will get some power and respect– when there are crowds of THOUSANDS of us in the streets. I would LOVE to be a part of something like that. Like part of history.

I was with them and ripped out more pages from the Koran. Come arrest me. I am Spartacus.

  • DiversityIsDeath

Aww, so what? Why are these cowardly, grovelling “British” authorities making such a fuss about this nonsense? They ought to do something productive like identifying and prosecuting the thousands of free roaming muslim gang-rapists and perverts who prey on white kids, instead of hassling white women at sporting events in front of the TV cameras.

  • A Freespeechzone

Meanwhile, a muslim defiling the Holy Bible is likely not a hate crime….

The ‘religion of peace’ makes bold threats and promises to force sharia law on the United States–and too many are assisting them by being cowardice and defiling OUR values.

Those behavior in the UK just might be a glimpse of OUR future, unless we force change.

  • The Jury should hang their heads in utter shame for allowing this case to find a guilty ruling … shameful . . . . .

  • In a pinch, I once used pages of the koran to clean my undercarriage after a sudden gastrointestinal issue.

In the interest of cultural sensitivity, I selected passages that mention Mohammad’s 6 year old blushing bride.

  • Einsatzgrenadier

The Koran isn’t even fit to be used as toilet paper. Who cares if that ridiculous book gets torn up? Muslims believe that the Koran, a book without a coherent narrative and filled with long, rambling passages that hardly make any sense, is the literal “speech of god” and the world’s greatest miracle. Talk about low IQ. It’s no wonder so many blacks join that murderous religious cult.

  • IstvanIN

What would happen if every Englishman picked a day to stand in the street and tear up a Koran? Would they arrest all of them?

    • ncpride

Oh how I would love to see that! I suspect the government would soil their pants at such defiance.

  • ncpride

They insanity of continuing to allow immigration from people they clearly fear boggles the mind. That their government has put the British people in such a suicidal position is beyond reprehensible. I hope for revolution there often. It’s their only hope at this point, I believe.

    • Sloppo

They allow continued immigration of worshippers of the pedophile-pirate’s moon-god because destruction of western civilization is the desired outcome of the global elitists. They want the endless conflict because that can cause people to become desperate enough to WANT a global authoritarian government which is powerful and invasive enough to control the perpetual violence. Globalists want absolute power and they know they’ll never get it willfully from peaceful and prosperous populations of white people. Muslims are very useful to the globalists right now.

  • MBlanc46

While I’d certainly be very careful about statements suggesting that people be killed, this story makes me want to destroy a Qur’an in public. Good on ya, Julie and Gemma.

  • Reverend Bacon

It’s a crime to rip up the Koran? ALWAYS??

Hmm. Suppose you go to some great Muslim food fest, where you are served all sorts of yummy treats. Look, just suppose, OK. Halal treats, yeah, whatever. And of course, you bring your copy of the Koran. But, being something of an infidel, the Muslim food doesn’t totally agree with you, and you have to make a mad dash to the toilet. (Hey, if they can have tasty muslim food, they can have modern flush toilets too). So you’re sitting there, reading the Koran, and you get to the part about “it’s OK to eat pork in extreme circumstances” (2:173) and you realize: there’s no toilet paper. So, what do you do?

    Have fun with your responses.

I saw a copy of the Koran in a used book store and I stuck a Chick tract in it and put it back on the shelf. Wonder if it’s still there?

    • Who Me?

Those dang Chick tracts are ALMOST (not quite) as annoying as the Koran itself!

      • sbuffalonative

I find them all the time. This week as as I walking to the store, I found one on a pay phone.

      • Alexandra1973

Yes, and I get free samples in the mail, since I’ve actually bought things from Chick Publications.

I love ’em. Jack Chick’s still at it, and hopefully he’ll be at it for a long time yet.

I bet you wouldn’t find the anti-Islam tracts annoying. 🙂

I thought about selling some designer toilet paper with the koran printed on it. Freedom of speech.

  • What a state of affairs – and what a ridiculous situation.

The worst aspects are no doubt that there are so many Muslims here in the first place that it has become an issue, and that certain peoples have planned to let them arrive in such numbers (as well as help pay for their expansion here).

As for the rest of it, I don’t know what’s worse…… that this is some sort of criminal offence, or that our own people seem happy to spy on their fellow countrymen with CCTV and go running to the police over it.

…”‘Mr Cornes asked them what they were doing and asked the control to get the CCTV cameras to monitor them.‘The group were followed from the ground and then intercepted by the police’….{..} John Newbold was working as a steward in the away end on the day and also witnessed pages being ripped from the book. He was on duty in the Gil Merrick stand at the time of the offence and told Birmingham Magistrates’. ‘I was at the back of the stand, when I saw, about four rows in front of me, somebody ripping something up. ‘I went down and asked “what are you ripping up?”. The reply was “the Koran”. “My mate was behind me so I asked him to radio it through to control to keep an eye on it and keep the cameras on them.‘We followed them at the end of the game to the away car park where the police stopped them and had a word with them.’”

People mock us if we suggest we live in a Big Brother society, and again, they will not see such thought control and conformity to the system and attitudes of the elites for what it fundamentally is.

I do think it is pretty stupid and pointless to be doing such acts in the first place though – as it will not solve the problems and nor will it gain us wider understanding and support – but it should not be a crime to “offend” or “upset” anybody.

  • mikefromwichita

Wanna bet ripping up a Bible would be A-ok with the ‘judge’.

  • gemjunior

What would have happened if they tore out pieces of the King James Version of the Bible, screaming about Christians?
    Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

    • Katherine McChesney

The Jesuits would love it considering their Counter-Reformation.

      • gemjunior

I don’t know what sect of “Christians” you hail from, but it must be a really messed up. I was making a comparison between the “sacredness” with which Islam is held publicly and the very unequal respect (none) given to Christianity. I used the KJV of the Bible because it’s used my many Christians. You still can’t stop bashing anything Catholic. I am not a great lover of Jesuits myself, but that’s not the point. The point is that you are an obnoxious c-nt. I’m dying to meet you in person. Maybe at the next AmRen conference? I can hardly wait.
