Revealed: The One in Nine Schools Where English Is Not First Language

Steven Swinford, Telegraph (London), January 31, 2014

English is no longer the first language for the majority of pupils in more than one in nine schools, new figures have revealed.

Last year the majority of children in 1,755 primary and secondary schools spoke another language at home following a sharp increase in the number of pupils with foreign born parents.

In more than 200 schools nine in ten pupils do not speak English as their mother tongue, with children speaking as many as 14 different languages.

Across England, the number of pupils who have English as their second language has risen by a fifth to almost 1.1 million in the past five years.

Of the ten schools with the highest proportion of children who do not speak english as their first language, all but two are outside London. All but one are rated as either good or outstanding by Ofsted, the schools watchdog.

To help cope with the growing diversity of their pupils, schools have enlisted interpreters to help at parents evenings and bi-lingual teaching assistants for reception classes.

The figure, revealed in Department for Education figures, comes amid concerns that immigration is having a significant impact on public services.

The concerns have been heightened after restrictions on Bulgarian and Romanian migrants were lifted in January.

According to official estimates the number of pupils is to grow by a million over the next decade and reach the highest levels in more than 40 years.

By 2022, the pupil population in England will exceed eight million for the first time since the early 1980s, fuelled by a combination of higher birth rates and an influx of migrants in some areas.

The Coalition has insisted it is taking steps to ease the crisis, with £5 billion being spent on school places by 2015.

However Douglas Carswell, a back-bench Tory MP, said that Britain’s needs to have a “national debate” about the impact of immigration on social cohesion.

He said: “Up until now immigration has been all about economics, but we need to start talking about the cultural impact too. We can’t hold it against an individual wanting to come to this country on behalf of their family, but are we doing all we can to integrate and assimilate?

“It’s time for a national debate about the impact of social cohesion in Britain today. I want to make sure that we create first and second generation Britons.”

More than 15,288 primary and secondary schools provided the Department for Education with information about the first languages of their pupils as part of the annual schools census.

Of them, 1,755 schools attended by a total of 835,174 children had a minority of english speakers. The figure has risen by 10 per cent since 2009.

Previous research has suggested that schools where native english speakers are in the minority are almost entirely in London. However, the official figures reveal that they are significantly more widespread.

While 968 of the 1,755 schools are in London, there are a total of 290 across the Midlands, 172 in the North West and 162 in Yorkshire and the Humber. The schools are in predominantly northern areas.

At Maidenhall primary school in Luton, 98.9 per cent of pupils do not speak english as their first language.

Children speak no fewer than 14 different languages, including Pahari, Urdu, Bengali, Punjabi, Somali, Polish, Hindi, Gujarati, Tamil, Portuguese, Arabic, Spanish and Pashto.

When pupils arrive at the school at the age of five, some have never seen a word of english before. Pupils are up to two years behind the national average for when they arrive.

Yasmine Dhillon, the head teacher, said: “Some of them have never seen the written word. At home the parents may not have any books, and when they come to us some of them only have words or phrases in English.”

For the first year pupils are “immersed in English”, after which most pupils have reached national standards.

The school also has translators on hand on parent evening, and is attempting to improve their standard of English. “The parents are aspirational, they want their children to go to university, to be doctors and highly skilled professionals.”

A spokesman for the Department for Education said: “We are determined that all children, whatever their background, get a first-class education.

“Our reforms to the education system, and the hard work of heads and teachers, are ensuring that is becoming the case–last week figures showed that a quarter of a million fewer children are being taught in failing schools than three years ago.”

Coke should crank out an ad with people singing “God Save the Queen” in all those languages. The Brits would love it.

The only people who show up at her Jubilee and birthday celebrations are the real British. That should give the real British politicians an idea of whom they should be representing.

I remember watching William and Kate’s wedding on TV. Looking at the crowd, the world would never know they are being overrun and displaced by Muslims. Quite a few people are shocked when I talk about that, because they have no clue how bad it is over there. One person even said ‘I didn’t know there were black people in England’……wow. They only nearly burned London to the ground a few years ago. Part of the problem we have is that a majority of Whites have no idea how bad it is in nearly all White nations.

Yup. If you complain to a typical libtard about our rapidly coming minority status in the United States they invariably say, “Well, go back to Europe!” But of course whites face minority status in all Western European countries too, with a delay of perhaps a few decades compared to where we are in the United States.

Unleash an army of Charlie Bronsons on the wankers…
I think I found a purpose for whites like him…

Everybody has their purpose and role.

Do you mind if I pinch that? Ta.

For the next thousand years these so-called Britons will be at each other’s throats. A peaceful homogeneous folk has had its world turned upside down by the traitors among them. Death, rape, poverty, filth, chaos and hate is the legacy of those traitors, whom I hope will one day pay for their treason.

  • Puggg

    Why be worried?

From what I’ve seen today, the Coke ad should cover all their languages.

  • IstvanIN

I have a solution to this problem but my comment would be deleted.

  • JohnEngelman

In order to move to another country one should be able to speak the language, and one should have a job waiting for one.

I hope some dark night Tony Blair and the minions that helped him trash what was a perfectly good society are, when they least expect it, “diversified.”

And in roughly 1 out of 9 public schools in England, majority of students are on (permanent) welfare

  • MBlanc46

All public schools in the US (I won’t presume to speak for the British) should conduct all instruction, except that in a foreign language course, in the English language. Adults who, legally, bring a child into the US should be held responsible for seeing that the child has sufficient command of English to attend school.

  • GeneticsareDestiny

Deport them all. Every single one. Including the children and the “refugees.”

    • Einsatzgrenadier

Yes. Repatriation is the only logical solution to our government-manufactured problem of massive third world immigration. Our traitorous elites import these non-white foreigners into our countries and we’re the ones who are going to have to ship the non-whites out when the economy collapses.

  • Einsatzgrenadier

This is the whole point of multiculturalism, which is really about facilitating the ethnic balkanization of England by institutionalizing the “politics of difference”. The globalists want to consolidate their hold on power by playing off ethnic groups against each other. This means that the truly disadvantaged, white people, will be too busy fighting off rival ethnic groups to effectively mobilize against the state in favor of broader shared interests.

  • Carney3

If only this headline were about a revival of the Celtic languages in Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, and the Isle of Man.

  • Carney3

    I agree, but more realistically:

    1) end all immigration from those not descendants of ethnic natives of the British Isles.

    2) hunt and deport all illegal aliens. Systematically squeeze them out of life by requiring secure British ID to access the banking system, obtain employment, get welfare, anything.

    3) Enforce the time limits on non-white legal aliens with temporary visas. Change the law so that those with permanent residence must depart after a set period.

    4) Offer generous cash payouts to non-white citizens who renounce their citizenship and depart. Systematically harass those who do not with audits, frequent police visits “to check up”, humiliating searches, etc. to emphasize their unwanted and alien status. Find ways to make them stigmatized, stressed, and unemployable the way current pro-white and patriotic activists are. Add the pressure by making the cash reward decline slowly steadily on a daily basis.

    5) Require lasting contraception on all welfare recipients. Make non-whites the top priority for enforcement; while dragging one’s feet on doing so with whites, only doing so with the most egregious cases for whites (flagrant criminals, dangerous addicts, worthless yobs and chavs who refuse the chance to clean up and join the Army or the like). Offer sterilization in exchange for large cash payouts for any non-white. Offer it to criminals in exchange for early release, castration in exchange for instant release.
