Black NFL Players Arrested Nearly 10 times as Often as Whites

Brent Schrotenboer, USA Today, November 29, 2013

A police officer in Cincinnati watched a large black man get into his car and turn on the engine after being told it was illegally parked.

The officer thought the man was trying to avoid a parking ticket and told him to stop. So the man—Matthias Askew, at the time an NFL player—stopped his Cadillac Escalade, got out and was arrested in a scuffle with several officers. Police used a stun gun on Askew four times, alleging he resisted arrest.

A judge rejected the police account and cleared Askew of all charges.

“They tased him simply because he was a big black man, not because he did anything to make them fear for their safety,” Askew’s former attorney, Ken Lawson, told USA TODAY Sports about the 2006 incident.

For many black players in the NFL, it’s a familiar scene. Of 687 NFL player arrests since January 2000, Askew’s was one of 294 that came in a traffic stop, according to a USA TODAY Sports investigation. In a league in which 66% of the players are black and 31% are white, black players were arrested nearly 10 times as often as white players (260 to 28), accounting for 88% of those NFL traffic-stop arrests.

That percentage is consistent with the overall NFL arrest numbers: Of the 687 total player arrests in the USA TODAY Sports database that spans 14 seasons, 607 involved black players—88%, a disproportionate rate sociologists attribute to several social factors in the black population at large, including a disproportionate rate of poverty and single-parent backgrounds. Those factors also include profiling, civil rights experts and NFL players say.

{snip}

Police advocates argue that profiling is not the reason players get stopped and arrested. Rich Roberts, a spokesman for the International Union of Police Associations, says when police decide to pull over a motorist they often can’t see the skin color of the vehicle’s occupants. He also says the decision to make a stop comes down to a simple question that does not involve race: Did the driver violate traffic laws or give police a reasonable suspicion to stop the car?

“Racial profiling is bad police work,” Roberts said. “Situational profiling is good police work.”

{snip}

Of the black players arrested during a traffic stop, about 70% were convicted or agreed to a punishment with prosecutors. Yet about 30% saw the arrest charges get dropped or were cleared when they fought the case. And the statistics do not include the number of NFL players who were stopped and not arrested; such data were not available.

Roberts said the conviction rate couldn’t be ignored. “The bottom line is did he do it?” he said. “That’s a yes-or-no question.”

{snip}

The USA TODAY Sports investigation found other differences in how authorities handled black players vs. white players during traffic stops:

About 6% of traffic-stop arrests for black players resulted only from charges related to their driver’s license, such as driving with a suspended license. The records showed no white players arrested on such license charges.

Black players were pulled over at least 13 times for playing music too loud or having window tint that was too dark. By contrast, USA TODAY Sports found no examples of white players stopped for those offenses during the period studied.

{snip}

Rarely were white players arrested on charges that resulted from a search of the vehicle. Twenty-three of their 28 traffic-stop arrests, 82%, were because of suspected intoxicated driving. For black players, 56% of traffic-stop arrests were because of suspected drunken or reckless driving. Another 26% were arrested or cited mainly because of alleged gun or drug possession, often discovered in a car search.

    Correction:
88%, a disproportionate rate sociologists attribute to several factors in the Black male population at large, including a disproportionate rate of poverty and single-parent backgrounds, very high levels of testosterone, and small pre-frontal brain mass. Those factors also include police experience with Black behavior, African behavior experts and White NFL players say.

    • Jesse_from_Sweden

      Heh.

About 6% of traffic-stop arrests for black players resulted only from
charges related to their driver’s license, such as driving with a
suspended license. The records showed no white players arrested on such
      license charges.

Might that be because white players just didn’t drive with suspended licenses? Maybe because they managed not to get their licenses suspended in the first place?

Black players were pulled over at least 13 times for playing music
too loud or having window tint that was too dark. By contrast, USA TODAY
Sports found no examples of white players stopped for those offenses
      during the period studied.

      Oh, windows tinted too dark.
Well, if that isn’t proof of racial profiling, stopping cars where the windows are so tinted that you can’t see the person driving meaning you have NO idea what race that person in, then I don’t know what is.

Personally I suspect one big part of the problem is how these players behave when they do get stopped.
They’ve had such an entitlement behavior built up over the year where they think they “deserve” a whole lot of things and respect and so lose their temper when some civil servant doesn’t give them the “respect” they think they deserve (and that they get from grovelling sports fans in other cases).

I read somewhere (think it was a police officer who wrote it) that one reason that blacks are arrested so much more often compared to poor white trash hillbillies in dirty wifebeaters and mullets is that the latter is actually capable of holding their temper in check for the five minutes it takes for a police officer to do his check and then move on.
Blacks instead get confrontational, unable to control their anger, which results in an arrest.

  • One crucial figure that the article does not say, that I found out from tweeting Brent Schrotenboer, is this: Of the 80 non-black arrests, how many were white? The answer turns out to be 64.

That said, the disparity isn’t as bad as it seems.

Where you have 607 black arrests to 64 white arrests in a league that’s 66% black and 31% white, it means that a black player is only 4.45 times as likely as a white player to be arrested. And I say “only” because, relative to other such measures of black-over-white multiple times likelihood of violent crime, as presented in “Color of Crime” and elsewhere, a 4.45 times black-white disparity is pretty good for blacks.

    • John Smith

      C’mon.

So how do you explain that filthy rich millionaires are 4.45 times more likely to be arrested? Poverty and oppression sure don’t explain it.

And regarding the national rate of blacks committing violent crime at about 10X the white rate – why is this?

In actual numbers, there are MILLIONS MORE poor whites, MILLIONS MORE whites hooked on drugs – why aren’t they committing the lion’s share of violent crime?

Growing up in a “racist” society that supposedly favors whites, you’d think these “racist” whites (that are poor and drug addicted) would be rampaging. But this is not the case? Why?

      • Because it’s not poverty.

The relationship between poverty crime is that crime causes poverty.

The point I was trying to make by adjusting the NFL player arrest race disparity into NFL player demographic disparity is that the disparity isn’t as severe as this study makes it out to be. They do this all the time: True to the axiom that figures never lie but liars figure, they’ll present a statistic in political ways to try to make a point.

When they want to concoct some grand conspiracy of racial profiling against NFL players, they’ll say that blacks are arrested ten times as often as whites, when, like I computed, the actual “more likely” disparity is only about 4.5. Or we’ll hear that in a given state, equal numbers of blacks and whites commit murder. But then you look at the state’s race demos and see 90% white and 10% black, meaning a black is nine times as likely as a white to commit murder.

        • Alexandra1973

Even if blacks and whites commit crime at the same rate, white people are smart enough to try to cover their tracks, while blacks are posting the videos on WorldStarHipHop.

Which STILL indicates that there’s a difference between the races.

          • NeanderthalDNA

Yes, they tend to be stupider than Whites, therefore when given lots of money still act stupid…because they ARE…

Reminds me of Plaxico Burris, former Giants WR, who packs a pistol in his pants and goes “clubbin” in NYC, shoots himself accidentally in the leg.

Wow. Stupidity incarnate. No amount of money raises the IQ’s of these folks.

      • Who is the black for Chicago Bear that just got sentenced to prison for trying to become a major cocaine dealer?

Making bank and feel the need to deal coke ….. Genius?

          Sam Hurd.

  • evilsandmich

Left unsaid is that a lot of current NFL behavioral rules are derived from that horrifically behaving Bengals team (the racial make-up of the offenders I shall leave unstated).

  • Luca

The article states disproportionately high statistics of blacks being arrested and wants the reader to believe that the cause is racism and profiling.

However, I have come to the conclusion that blacks commit crimes in disproportionately high numbers, even when they are NFL millionaires. (There goes the poverty theory).

    • Sick of it

Local nobodies who happen to be black get pulled over all the time for violating traffic laws…and scream racism.

      • me

Personal reflection and claiming responsibility for one’s actions is nonexistent in the Bantu brain, as well as ‘obeying the White man’s raaaaycis laws’. They are not compatible to White/civilized society, so all Bantus should be given their own homeland, away from the oppressive White devils. It’s the only humane thing to do…

  • Lewis33

I hope the left succeeds in destroying football on the basis of it being too “violent” as they are trying to do. Not because I agree, but so people will quit glorifying NAPA’s who can run fast.

  • Dave4088

White NFL players are rarely, if ever, arrested because they are civilized unlike their black teammates.

  • Another half baked part of this article: Blaming the poverty of black NFL players for their being 4.5 times more likely than a white colleague to be arrested.

“Poverty,” in a league whose minimum salary this season $420,000 this year for rookies graduated up to $940,000 for 10+ season vets.

  • sbuffalonative

…88%, a disproportionate rate sociologists attribute to several social factors in the black population at large, including a disproportionate rate of poverty and single-parent backgrounds.

Yes, that’s what the problem is. Disproportionate rate of poverty and single-parent backgrounds. If so, one solution would be to simply discourage single black women from having bastard babies. Yet that’s one solution that’s never proposed by black leaders. Think about it. Blacks claim this is the problem but refuse to do anything about it. They use this as an excuse all the time but they never focus on the solution.

  • NeanderthalDNA

    Maybe they need more programs?

Hey look…if you are making a few hundred grand a year or more legally, your days of getting arrested should be pretty much over. No excuses.

But Blacks need excuses in general. Racism…

    • sbuffalonative

OF COURSE they need more programs. That goes without saying. Ending racial profiling in regards to criminal behavior is another. I would propose that if a black man is found committing a crime, he should simply be excused of the crime. *end sarcasm.

  • IstvanIN

The NFL has a 24/7 ride program. Call a special number and they will send a car to pick a player up and take him home. No need to drive or even find a cab. No need to ever drive drunk, yet they can not even do that.

    • willbest

What and leave their $100k car in that kind of neighborhood over night are you nuts?

  • willbest

Perhaps the cops don’t have a lot of tolerance for people driving $80,000+ cars thinking that the rules of the road don’t apply to them.

There is probably something else about impulse control and mouthing off to authority in there as well.

  • The fact that these negro thugs can play football does not cause them to somehow stop being thugs. They’re groids, and this “stuff” is what groids do.

  • dubyasee

What was that urban program years ago? You know, the one where they put up lights on ghetto basketball courts to facilitate “Midnight Basketball”. The idea being that if you engaged young black males in playing basketball, all hours of the night, then they wouldn’t be out causing murder and mayhem.

Maybe they need to schedule NFL games at midnight?

  • John R

Black NFL players arrested more often than White players? Geeze, I am just so surprised, NOT! The one thing worse than a large black man is a large black man with an inflated ego. Consider OJ Simpson!

  • Atheist Realist

i’ve started to think that college football should have a requirement of SAT above 1600 or ACT above 24. Since CFB is a feeder of the NFL most NFL problems would go away as well

    • Jacobite2

Doubtful. But at least some openings in good colleges could go to people with the IQ to do college work. Some of these eedjits were illiterate after 4 years in college (Dexter Manley).

    • I’ve said for years that college football should be eliminated and the NFL should start its own minor-league teams the way professional baseball has done.

      • NeanderthalDNA

Or keep athletics but apply the same academic standards to athletes as the general student body.

Which would still result in stupidity, but perhaps not as much.

I just don’t think it’s a good idea to mix in criminally prone thugs with low IQ’s with a general student body trying to get an education.

Of course look at our primary and secondary education systems where it’s more important to keep Dalpacino Alcapone Goins in skool where he can assault, rob, rape others with potential until he’s big enough to go to big boy prison (or gets killed as a result of his stupidity and violent nature).

It’s such a shame, too. Football is a great sport, very complex, ironically subtle tactically and strategically. I’ve come to usually pull for the team with the most Whites on it…

But I remember years ago my friends and I got into playing Madden 08, coach and franchise mode. No control over players, just calling plays and audibles, wheeling and dealing with other franchises, designing playbooks and strategies that optimized strengths and minimized weaknesses…

    Great stuff! Lots of fun!

Here’s what cracked me up. After the first season, the AI generated a slew of fictitious draft picks, used the database of names already in the system, and proceeded to churn out things like…

“Dbrickashaw Gomez”, a blond, blue eyed White boy!

Funny though, most QB’s were White, and those black QBs the AI generated…tended to be incorrigible scrambling trainwrecks no matter how well they were rated…

  • Zaporizhian Sich

One more reason why college athletics are they are today must be eliminated. Our sons and daughters are jeopardized by the sociopaths these college athletic programs are full of. I personally had to deal with this reality, I know what kind of felons really are in these college football teams.

  • dd121

I don’t know why so many posters on AmRen have such a disdain for football. Entertaining whites is the one socially redeeming thing blacks can do.

    • My main entertainment back in the day was shooting old military rifles. I can’t do that anymore, so I make do with vegetable gardening, cooking, hiking, bicycling, cross-country skiing, woodworking, metal working, writing naval history articles, and fishing – I started tying my own fishing flies in high school. Not one of these pursuits requires the presence of an African’t.

I neither need nor want them to entertain me.

  • Massif1

I have seen a black Falcons player going 90 in 65 zone on 1-85 – driving Audi R8. This brings me to a point that most blacks in sports have never grew up to become adults. Some basketball players with good contracts have nannies that oversee the spending and lifestyle choices. NFL players are big kids except their salaries is a couple of millions a year.

If whites stopped watching NFL and buying NFL merchandise the league would start reconsidering what kind of garbage they’re promoting.

  • JohnEngelman

    – Brent Schrotenboer, USA Today, November 29, 2013

Excuse me. Professional football players make tons of money, so the excuse of poverty does not work for them.

The fact that blacks have a high rate of violent crime even when they are not poor, indeed even when they are rich and celebrated indicates that violent behavior is inherent in their nature.

  • Katherine McChesney

Why do Whites watch these thugs play sports? Seems like they would have figured out long ago that they are supporting criminials and their violent behavior. Even Conservative Whites drool over the games. It is disgusting behavior.

    • Zaporizhian Sich

Not me, I detest sports because it is all too often dominated by Negro Felon Leagues.

  • Someone who refused a duel was legally allowed to be killed in public in northern lands, where an insult from a social inferior usually merited only a beating. Italy appears to have porked it in this respect.

  • macGrath

I quit watching football many years ago realizing I was supporting a class of people who would rob or kill me in a dark alley if they weren’t running up and down a field with a ball. I can watch my dog run up and down a field with a ball and derive the same satisfaction. Tuning into a recent game for a minute, The Saints and IIRC The Lions I thought I had tuned into Bulawayo versus Zimbabwe. I had to check the channel as it appeared from the players on the field I had mistakenly tuned into The Africa channel. The white sport nuts who support this embarrassment are just as wacky in their own way as their moon bat white libbo fellow travelers.
