Half of Oslo Residents Now Fear Street Crime

The Local, November 19, 2013

More than half the people living in Oslo have had their sense of safety affected by a recent rise in muggings, a survey commissioned by the VG tabloid has revealed.

According to the survey, 50.7 percent of the capital’s residents said that the recent rise in street robbery, which has been heavily reported in the media, had affected their sense of security.

So far this November, there have been 58 street robberies reported in the capital, more than three a day.

Roger Andresen, the deputy chief of the Oslo police, said it was important to put the rise in robberies in perspective.

“The police understand that people feel fear, but it is important to emphasize that the chance of being a victim of robbery in Oslo is still small,” he said.

[Editor’s Note: Two years ago, it was reported that all rapes in Oslo were committed by immigrants of a “non-Western background.”]
