Chamber Pushes Boehner to Pass Immigration Bill

Neil Munro, Daily Caller, October 29, 2013

Business and progressive groups rallied at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Oct. 29 to reassure Speaker of the House John Boehner that he’ll get their political support if he schedules a major vote on immigration.

“He’s said in the press that the House should take up immigration reform and he plans to do it,” said Randel Johnson, the chamber’s vice president for immigration.

“I think he want to get this done, but it is our job to show that there is support in the business community and the evangelical community and in other conservative Republican groups that they’ll be there to back him up when he makes his decisions,” he told The Daily Caller.

The chamber is not pushing Boehner to pass the Senate bill on the House floor. “We have always said that the House has its own process and should move the different bills in a way they see appropriate,” said a chamber official. The chamber wants a “common sense immigration reform” bill, the official said.

But critics fear that if the House approves even a small immigration bill, Boehner would allow the subsequent joint House and Senate conference committee to create an ambitious bill similar to the Senate bill, and he would send that bill to the House floor for a vote.

If Boehner schedules a floor vote on the Senate bill or on a joint conference report similar to the Senate bill, it would likely pass, despite strenuous opposition from GOP-friendly and single-issue groups.

The bill would pass because almost the entire Democratic caucus will support the ambitious bill. Business lobbies and progressive reporters could concentrate their efforts to persuade roughly 20 GOP legislators to approve the unpopular bill.

{snip}

If approved by the House, the Senate’s immigration bill would bring in two million working-age immigrants and almost two million guest workers a year—or roughly one person for each of the four million Americans who will turn 18 that year. Overall, the bill would ensure the award of roughly 33 million green cards to illegal immigrants and new immigrants over the next decade, in a time of accelerating automation, high unemployment, declining wages, and increasing public worries about the future.

Surveys also shows that new immigrants, especially lower skilled Latinos, vote for Democratic candidates by lopsided margins.

{snip}

The Chamber of Commerce rally included many representatives from state Chambers of Commerce, some business leaders, and many left-of-center evangelicals organized by a progressive group, the National Immigration Forum.

{snip}

Evangelicals are increasingly supportive of immigration because they recognize that they have a biblical duty to help strangers, said Gary VanderPol, an assistant professor of justice and mission at Denver Seminary, in Littleton, Colo.

American Christians owe foreigners as much respect as they do to Americans, said Craig Davis, a pastor for a Quaker church in Yorba Linda, Calif. “To me, [nationality] does not matter,” he told TheDC. Foreigners should be aided, even if they end up voting for politicians who try to legislate against religion, he added. “We need to lean towards people who need help.”

{snip}

However, a June survey by Public Opinion Research reported that 51 percent of evangelicals want to reduce immigration inflow, while only 17 percent want to increase the inflow.

The survey of 1,000 people also showed that only 11 percent of evangelicals would grant full legal status to illegals.

Seventy-five percent of evangelicals said that American businesses should hire Americans before foreign workers, while only 2 percent strongly disagreed with preferences for Americans, said the survey.

The survey was funded by NumbersUSA, which wants to reduce the current inflow of 1 million legal immigrants per year.

    To say that the Republicans are committing political suicide doesn’t capture it.

  • Anchor babies and Amnesty criminals will rule us once they push the blacks out of the way. The IRS collection agency will have MS13 tats on their necks. We’ve gone past the point of no return. You can’t vote your way out of this horror. It’s guaranteed from now on. We lost. Hate everything.

    More immigrants mean more consumers and more job applicants. By the law of supply and demand this means higher prices, lower wages, and higher profits. No amount of fancy talk changes this simple reality.

    • itdoesnotmatter

      John says: More immigrants mean more consumers and more job applicants.

      In CA it means more illiterate, crime/rape prone mestizos hanging out on every street corner looking to pick up day work and when the urge strikes, peeing on nearby buildings and throwing their trash on the sidewalks.
      Contrary to popular opinion, only 3-4% of these invaders work in agribus.
      Surfed by the Food Channel long enough to see bits of a program portraying how packaged foods are processed. Working the assembly lines, only mestizos are seen.
      Is that a job Whites do not/will not do? It looks as if it would help to be near brain dead to work at that level. Perfect for blacks.

      It is more insidious, but just as with black and latinos, the Chamber Pot of Commerce has the same “Gibmedat!” attitude. Its members want the government to give them cheap labor, and they are happy to betray the country to get it.

      I have little doubt if the Chamber Pot’s members could get slaves, they would even do that as they sanctimoniously rationalized their actions as “sound business principles” or “maximizing shareholder profits.”

      The USA is and has always been an immigrant country. The only time that there was no immigration was during the Great Depression and that didn’t help much. The zero immigration policy of the USA during the Great Depression may have been a contributing factor for WWII. If millions of unemployed Europeans could’ve immigrated to the USA, they wouldn’t have listened to people like Hitler and Mussolini.

      • JohnEngelman

        If millions of unemployed Europeans had been able to immigrate to the United States the unemployment rate would have approached fifty percent. Americans lucky enough to get jobs would be paid quite a bit less.

        • Bossman

          Well at least there would not have been WWII. What caused the Great Depression was a great contraction of world-wide trade, commerce and migration.

          • Luca

            Actually, what we need is the opposite of immigration. We need deportation.

            Immigration is based upon whatever the market and society can bear. We can bear no more, nor could we during the Depression.

            The immigration programs of the past were justifiable because America was a booming emerging world power with an incredible economy and in desperate need of workers, when everything we and much of the world consumed was made here. It was a controlled program taking only those people from Europe who could more easily assimilate into our society and work force.

            Now we are exporting jobs and our economy is declining at a rapid rate. Politicians only want non-assimilating, benefit seeking, immigrants to destroy the White power base in this country and to herd them for a voting block.

            When did it become our duty to relieve the world of its unemployed, illiterate, criminal peasants? Are we the dumping ground?

            Your powers of reasoning and logic are breathtakingly puerile and one-dimensional. I would expect better from a 6th grader.

        I am not opposed to immigration. But I want more white immigrants and fewer or (better) no more third worlders. We’ve had enough spanish, muslims, indians, and chinese. It’s high time to bring fairness and balance back to US immigration policy by recruiting more white immigrants.

        I am sure many afrikaners would like to say a final adios to the black cannibals who terrorize them in the country they built from a bunch of mud huts. Encouraging afrikaner immigration to the US would be a humanitarian act and greatly benefit the US.

        I problem is whitey. He is lazy and apolitical. Can’t he get off his fat, spectator sports keister and march in the streets (lawfully of course) and demand a better deal for his race?

  • joesolargenius

    If they cut welfare and social benefits they will be able to find tens of millions of new workers right here in America !

    My disgust with evangelicals increases every day. That Good Book of theirs approves of breaking the law and being rewarded for it? As Jesus said, there would be many preaching in his name who are of the devil.

      It’s the reason I stopped going to church. Evangelical churches are full of racial mixing, mulattoes, etc., and false doctrines are preached, not the Bible.

  • NoMosqueHere

    Third world immigration is the cornerstone of the Democrat party. More third worlders, including but not limited to hispanics, mean more democrat voters. In other words, the lower the percentage of whites (and consequently, white voters) the higher the probably Democrats will retain control of the US government. This is why the amnesty issue is so important. If 10 – 20 million illegals are given amnesty, the republicans will never carry another presidential election, and that’s pretty much the end of America.

    First order of business: They are not “progressives” they are regressives. They are desirous of this country to allow over population, to allow more pollution, to allow a greater strain on water and other natural resources. They are desirous of allowing uneducated barbarians to pollute our country and look the other way when they introduce foreign species into our fresh water. They are desirous of us contacting diseases that have never been in this country. They are desirous of bring back diseases that we eradicated. These so called “progessives” are the MOST REGRESSIVE people on the face of the earth. Let’s start calling them what they really are: REGRESSIVES.

  • DaveMed

    Big business can promise all it wants. If Republicans cave on this they will not get a single more vote from me.

    • Pro_Whitey

      If amnesty gets through, it won’t matter whether you kept voting for the GOP or not. The left would gain majorities in key states, and the GOP will be frozen out for decades if not for the rest of the life of the United States, given the disastrous course we’re on.

  • bilderbuster

    You can’t have a first world standard of life with a third world population & the problems of the third world can’t be fixed by bringing their problems here.

  • Pro_Whitey

    If the evangelicals want to help strangers so much, the evangelicals should get off their sorry butts and travel to those turd world hell holes and minister to them. There is absolutely no reason to bring anyone here to do that.

  • Erasmus

    If amnesty happens, the country goes hardcore democrat. When that happens, the Chamber Pot of Commerce can say “B’bye!” to any hope of ever having another republican in the White House, and soon the democrat-party-dominated government in Washington won’t leave them even a pot to piss in.
