DeMint Writes Letter to Vladimir Putin on American Exceptionalism

Amy Payne, The Foundry, September 13, 2013

This week in The New York Times—on September 11, no less—Russian President Vladimir Putin took issue with the idea of American exceptionalism. He wrote:

It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation. There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too. We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal.

Yes, all humans are created equal—but not all nations are created equal. Heritage President Jim DeMint sent a letter to President Putin today explaining this idea.

Letter from Jim DeMint to President Vladimir Putin on American Exceptionalism

Is this the same DeMint who fired Jason Richwine for his Harvard dissertation?

    • NorthSea

American Exceptionalism has been betrayed, then, by DeMint’s own definition if its central tenet is limits to government power. What limits?

    • Erasmus

Yes, this is the same DeMint who fired Richwine for telling the truth.

DeMint said the US is exceptional; he didn’t say that he himself wasn’t a coward.

  • Phrases I wish would disappear from the American lexicon by yesterday:

    “American Exceptionalism”

All used these days to justify open borders.

    • Oil Can Harry

And thanks to the massive immigrant invasion supported by Jim Dimwit America will soon be an unexceptional Third World police state. While Russia stays majority white thanks to Putin, a good man.

      • It’s a bit unfair to claim that he wants open borders. To this day, even though DeMint de facto fired Jason Richwine, Heritage is still using his research to oppose the latest amnesty bill. However, Heritage still thinks more legal immigration is good, an affliction common to many conservative Republicans, including Ted Cruz, whose recent statements in that stead are making people think that he’s selling out, when in reality that has always been his position.

        • Oil Can Harry

I stand corrected. DeMint’s record on immigration is better than I remembered.

Aside from their betrayal of Richwine my main beef w/Heritage is that for years they’ve put out propaganda pieces denying there’s any waste in our military budget while they receive funding from defense contractors.

We may have been exceptional when we were created but lost our way with the Lincoln administration. After that we were no different than any other country. Creating an empire with the Spanish-American War, allowing innocent men and women to be killed to get the US into WW1 and 2. The sell out of Eastern Europe. The useless deaths in Vietnam. The current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. And now we are dying. The Senate wants to define what constitutes a “journalist”, led by Shumer and Feinstein. Spying on us through the internet. Forfeiture laws that allow the police to take your money and possessions even when no crime has occurred. Yeah, we’re exceptional.

That whole website is worth a read. When I found it – I could barely pull myself away from the screen until I finished reading it in its entirety.

The “Tomato Bubble” is the perfect analogy for what is happening to our currency.

      • Spartacus

Agreed. Amazing site, especially the comparison between Barack and Assad’s wives. Genius !

    • dukem1

Great site! The Putin v. Obama pretty much sums up what is wrong with the world…
Man, I’d love to see how Vlad would deal with Sharpton, SPLC, Tim Wise, et al.

All countries, as all entities are exceptional; in as much as they are in some ways different than other entities. The question that perhaps being raised is whether America is immune to the fate that has befallen other countries.

Putin, being a Russian, has observed this in Russia. The Communists took over with great joy and hope; soon Communism would rule the world. Well it didn’t, and Russia is now smaller than when the Communists triumphed.

Putin also has a good knowledge of the Germans and National Socialism: Today Germany, tomorrow the world. We know how that turned out; Germany was destroyed physically and spiritually. Germany never has recovered spiritually.

Rome, Greece, the Empires of China, Aztecs, England etc., etc. etc. etc. all suffered massive declines. Putin asks why America will be any different.

  • Extropico

Putin’s missive is better than both Obama’s speech and DeMint’s piece. Putin remains correct in his assessment of the general perniciousness of believing that only your nation is exceptionally benevolent and worthy of decades-long wars. I am a patriot, but not a patriotard. #Merica

Apparently the phrase “American exceptionalism” is a neologism used by lamestream conservatives (like “Judeo-Christian”) which allows them to both adhere to political correctness while carving out a niche more politically acceptable to middle America than whatever the Marxists are currently offering.

But just as Judaism has had little effect on American religion or Christianity throughout the ages (modern Judaism should not be equated with OT Hebrews), non-whites are not what made America exceptional. And, as their numbers increase, are making it a less and less desirable place to live.

  • bigone4u

I feel sorry for deMint, who is a self-deluded neocon. He’s still mentally living in the Reagan era, believing that Obama is a surd, an outlier, and that Amerika will self-correct and get back on the right track. Amerika will get back on the right track, but not so long as the present government is in power. It will take secession or a new revolution, in which I fear that much blood will be spilled. Most likely, Amerika will remain a bully on the world stage until her economy is exhausted and she rapidly sinks into third-world status. Her population will see a shrinking population of whites as the race is miscegenated out of existence, her middle class will disappear, and historians will write about why it happened. White nationalists may get a footnote in those future books, noting that we called it correctly, while trying to keep America on the right track.

Why are all our politicians pink poka dot panty wearing pansies? We were exceptional right up until our nation was taken over by leftists with jungle fever. And now our fool politicians credit diversity, the very force that is destroying America, with what makes us exceptional. It makes exceptionally weak, uncivilized, broke, and headed into the trash heap of history.

  • Easyrhino1

And if you don’t believe that the USA is exceptional Mr. Putin, we’ll simply detain you indefinitely without evidence or a trial to defend yourself as President Obama says we have the right to do.

And if we’re not able to detain you we’ll simply assassinate you and or blow your family members to pieces via drone strikes as President Obama also says we have the right to do.

Rest assured we’ll only do these things after the NSA has thoroughly read all your emails and listened to your phone calls as President Obama says we have the right to do.

    Why? Because we’re exceptional!

  • Tim_in_Indiana

when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal

Now even the Russkies are spouting that line!

One of the many mistakes of the founding of this country was the line by Jefferson “All men are created equal.” No other short phrase has been more twisted, more misused, more misinterpreted and more distorted than those few words.

Jefferson could have said “all men are created free” and it would have been just as pithy, but without the potential for misuse and abuse. Now that line has become holy writ, and it will become our downfall.

    • Rhialto

In understanding this phrase, you must consider the context in which it existed. The phrase “All men …” was in the Declaration of Independence, a document addressed to King George III. As such, the King would have considered it a rejection of his royal authority by Divine Right. In todays language it would be: Hey King, you’re no better than we are, just luckier because you popped out of a queen’s [birth canal]. God had nothing to do with it.

The king deemed it, and the revolutionaries intended it to be, a declaration of treason. The idea of human equality in rights or political status was a concept too ridiculous for the King or the revolutionaries to even consider.

Hard to believe DeMint is from the same place which produced Francis Marion, John C. Calhoun, and Wade Hampton. Now they have Nikki Haley and Tim Scott. South Carolina has been rather disappointing lately. Personally, I blame Sherman. 🙂

  • jackryanvb

South Carolina is leading the South in racial renegades. This A &[email protected] Demint was responsible for firing a Heritage researcher who did a study that mass illegal alien amnesty, open the flood gates to the third world was bad for US economy.

This A $&@ pulled the strings to appoint an affirmative action Black US Senator from South Carolina, the first since Reconstruction.

South Carolina now doesn’t have a straight White Southernor in the offices of Governor, US Senators.

Flaming queer, RINO, open borders immigration, Grahmnesty, ‘X’tian Zionist Lindsey Graham is my least favorite US Senator. Maybe it’s time to take down the a confederate Battle flag from the SC state capital.

  • Strider73

DeMint revealed himself as a neocon slug when he wrote “When we have used our power, however, we’ve done it for good.” The following people would beg to differ, if they could:

    * the ~600,000 killed in the War of Yankee Aggression (not counting civilians)
    * the ~50 million killed in World War II, the direct result of US intervention in World War I
    * the two million Vietnamese killed in that idiotic war, plus the nearly 60,000 Americans killed
    * the ~500,000 Iraqi children killed in the 1990s by US sanctions, which Madeline Albright claimed was “worth it”
    * the million or so Iraqis, Afghans and Pakistanis killed in Bush’s (and Obama’s) Mideast misadventure

Add to those millions the thousands killed around the world by CIA coups and the puppet tyrants they installed in various countries (Somoza, Saddam and the shah of Iran being the most obvious).

The US was exceptional when it was the Switzerland of North America — maintaining a policy of armed neutrality and keeping out of other people’s blood feuds. That genuine exceptionalism, unfortunately, vanished long ago.

  • Puggg

Pfaw. This “American exceptionalism” tripe is basically saying that Americans are somehow exempt from the real forces that have governed human societies since the beginning of civilization. It would be like creating a myth called “pug exceptionalism” that somehow because pugs are pugs, they can’t get heartworm and suffer from it like all the other dog breeds.

  • JohnEngelman

The European influx to the United States ended long ago. When Europeans look at the United States they see our exceptionally high crime rate, our exceptionally frayed safety net, and they are repelled by the American gun culture.

    • alex

Our high crime rate isn’t exceptional, but it’s relatively high because of blacks.
“One does not see Scandinavians fleeing the horrors of Social Democracy…”
One doesn’t see Americans fleeing the horrors of high crime and poverty.
Speaking of poverty: How come people allegedly living in poverty have phones, TV sets and Michael Jordan sneakers? Some of them have cars and apartments. Virtually all of them can afford to buy drugs and alcohol.
Social Democracy can work in Germany and Scandinavia as long as overwhelming majority of the population are white Germans and Scandinavians.

  • DeMint shouldn’t bash Putin too much, preferably not at all.

See the news this morning? The House Republican leadership found spines re the defund ObamaCare effort.

What explains this sudden onset of courage?

    My theory:

    Vladimir Putin.

He showed that Obama could be had, and how it’s done.

  • MBlanc46

Jim DeMint is a publicity hound. Who cares what he thinks about anything?

  • WR_the_realist

Nowadays the term “American Exceptionalism” is usually just used as an excuse for why we should jump into another war that has nothing to do with us.
