Changing Times: Kohl Defends Plan to Halve Turkish Population

Spiegel Online, August 2, 2013

After the discovery of previously unseen documents, former Chancellor Helmut Kohl has confirmed that in 1982, he had a plan to drastically reduce the number of Turks living in Germany. But according to a statement released by his office on Friday, the policy reflected wider debate at the time.

Yes, he said it, and yes, he meant it. After Spiegel Online published details on Thursday of unsealed confidential British documents revealing that in 1982, conservative German Chancellor Helmut Kohl aimed to carry out a radical plan to reduce the number of Turks living in Germany by 50 percent within four years, the former leader has defended the policy.

“At the time, (Kohl’s plan) . . . was part of a broader debate on immigration policy,” said his Berlin office in a statement on Friday. After consulting with Kohl, who is now 83, the office also reported that the British documents correctly reflect Kohl’s standpoint at the time–but refrained from divulging any more details.

“The former chancellor is not prepared to make any further comment on the issue,” the statement read.

‘That’s Progress’

Thomas Oppermann, committee chairman for the center-left Social Democrats, expressed alarm at the mindset lurking behind Kohl’s recently-revealed agenda. “This school of thought was influenced by the idea that immigrants and refugees in Germany were nothing more than a liability,” he commented. These days, he added, immigration is seen as an opportunity, partly due to Germany’s shortage of skilled workers.

Representatives of Germany’s sizeable Turkish community, meanwhile, played down the disclosures. Kenan Kolat, chairman of the country’s Turkish Community Organization, said in a statement seen by daily newspaper Berliner Zeitung: “Today’s political class would never get away with that sort of thing. That’s progress.”

Memet Kilic, who is of Turkish descent and a member of parliament for the Green Party, commented: “Whilst the exposure of Helmut Kohl’s way of thinking may be a novelty, it is a mindset that has been espoused by the (Kohl’s) CDU and its Bavarian sister party for decades.”

“It was impossible for Germany to assimilate the Turks in their present numbers.”

Unfortunately Germany still has the same problem. Multiculti doesn’t work and even Turks born in Germany are a reminder of that.

  • These days, he added, immigration is seen as an opportunity, partly due to Germany’s shortage of skilled workers.

Plenty on unemployed Greeks and Spaniards. So either the EU was built upon the premise of open borders for citizens between member countries or Oppermann is just trying to destroy a nation by importing Turks.

  • Puggg

And why didn’t he go through with the plan? American pressure?

“It was impossible for Germany to assimilate Turks in their present numbers.”

It’s impossible as well as undesirable to assimilate Turks into Germany in any numbers.

    • sbuffalonative

      A great missed opportunity.

In 1982, multiCULTuralism was still in it’s infancy. There would have been grumbling but there would have been far less political pressure. They could have gotten it done.

      ‘He who hesitates is lost’.

“After consulting with Kohl, who is now 83, the office also reported that the British documents correctly reflect Kohl’s standpoint at the time–but refrained from divulging any more details.”

Well, at least he didn’t grovel and beg for forgiveness.

  • IstvanIN

Pay them to leave. The one’s that don’t leave within 90 days lose all their government benefits. If they haven’t left within one year begin deportation. Including the so-called “German” ones.

    • Sick of it

But people like Herr Oppermann would never accept such a policy. They proudly proclaimed that ‘Germany Must Perish’…not become free of parasites.

      • me

Truth! It’s pretty much the same thing.

  • Fighting_Northern_Spirit

“Today’s political class would never get away with that sort of thing. That’s progress.”
More like regress. The need is even more urgent today, but so is the White suicidal urge.

Where was Reagan’s plan to halve the number of Mexicans in the US? Oh, I forgot. His plan was amnesty with a closed border to follow. Well, half the plan worked. The wrong half.

    • IstvanIN

Congress never had any intentions of closing the border. He was against the amnesty originally but they tricked him. Congress at work.

    • MBlanc46

Reagan knew to whom he answered.

    • WR_the_realist

The good news is that Reagan later said that the amnesty was the biggest mistake he ever made. The bad news is that he made it anyway.

    And back in 1683.

Note for fellow history-ignorant Americans, Google “Battle of Vienna”.

Unfortunately conservative politicians never actually act upon their more worthwhile ideas.

Turks only started to flood into Germany from the late 1960s to the early 1970s – the oil hock of 1973 effectively halted the immigration, and previous to the late ’60s German labor needs were met mostly by southern Europeans.
So, in 1982 when Helmut Kohl suggested that the Turks needed to go home, they had only really been in Germany for 10 to 15 years or so. If Kohl acted then, there was still a chance to save the situation.

A German chancellor who had a secret plan to deport the country’s minorities.
Now, where have I heard that one before ? It kind of rings a bell.
The last time a German chancellor mulled deporting people because of their identity, between 40-50 million Europeans ended up dead. Germany’s horrific historical record of invading and attacking almost all of their neighbors and committing massacres and genocides against various ethnic groups is a matter of historical record.
What these revelations make clear is how little the country has learnt from its history. True, the country apologized to its neighbors and paid compensation to Jewish survivors – one certainly would think it would be the least they could do given the magnitude of horrors they inflicted. But what is becoming increasing obvious with contemporary Germany is how the country’s political culture demonizes immigrants, foreigners and present day minorities. German politicians of all stripes routinely rail against multiculturalism, openly berate the country’s immigrants, many of them lifelong residents of the country for not “integrating” when the majority are law abiding, decent people who try to live normal lives in an intolerant society which detests their very presence in the country.
Now we are being told that as recently as 1982 a German chancellor apparently inspired by Hitler mulled deporting immigrants because of their ethnicity, and not one German politician, civic society or political party has bothered to come forward to condemn these proposals or point out their obvious comparisons with Hitler’s genocidal tactics.
Exactly why Turks and other minorities in Germany put up with this nonsense is beyond me.

    • me

Why the German people are supposed to be displaced with Turks, Muslims, Gypsies, Africans, etc. in their own country is beyond ME. You don’t know how Turks and other ‘minorities’ “put up with this nonsense”? You are advocating for genocide by immigration. How about the fact that EVERYONE is entitled to their own culture and their own country, without having hostile strangers INVADING their neighborhoods, demanding free financial support, insisting on preferential treatment, and forcing the Germans to accommodate their every whim, at the cost of their own rights, their own wealth, and their own cultural identity? How long are the new generations of Germans going to be flogged, marginalized, vilified, and put upon for the sins of their fathers? The German people have paid their reparations, and continue to do so, apparently forever. Nothing left for the Germans to do but be replaced, right? You think that Germans that had absolutely NOTHING to do with the events of WWII should be punished forever? You think that the German people don’t have any rights to their own culture, their own freedom of association, their own wealth, their own self-determination, and their own country–yet you’re okay with the Japanese (who were part of the Axis coalition), the Turks, the Arabs, the Chinese, the Mexicans, the South Africans, the Israelis and other non-Whites having these rights? Maybe we should kill all of the Germans, since they’re all so ‘evil’–according to your flawed logic and sadistic sense of justice. You are racist against Germans. You think the German people should suffer forever. You want genocide for the German people. You are ridiculous.

    • KenelmDigby

The immigrants should go back home.
That’s the simple and obvious solution.

      • sasboy

How about German immigrants in South America who formed isolated communes and imported Nazi war criminals like Mengele and tortured and conducted medical experiments on local people ?

Should’nt they go back too ?

And how about German and Dutch immigrants like the Amish who live in isolated farms, far away from mainstream society in America ? Should’nt they be sent back too ?

Germans have a habit of not mixing with local people. They assume an air of superiority both in their own country with immigrants as well as when they colonize other places.

      • sasboy

Why don’t German immigrants in South America leave if they think immigration is such a bad idea ? From what I hear most of them specialized in torturing local people in isolated communes and importing war criminals like Paul Schafer and Josef Mengele. Hardly a model of “integration”.

  • DocLawyer

The so called holocaust? I guess you flunked history in high school; did you also drop out? As Mahmoud Ahmadinejad liked to say, the holocaust never happened but we need a holocaust now!

    • me

The “Holocaust” hasn’t anything to do with the Germans that are alive today, but they will be flogged for the ‘sins’ of their fathers, and WWII, for the entire 21st Century–or until all native Germans are wiped off the face of the earth. Whichever comes first…

      • Epiminondas

Ditto for white Southerners, and for the “sin” of slavery.

  • JackKrak

The last vestige of testicular fortitude in a German government.

  • me

Germany has the biggest case of White Guilt in the entire world….

  • me

“Multiculturalism” and massive immigration of hostile cultures to replace a native population is genocide. Genocide=Satanic

  • MBlanc46

The corporate elite to whom all American politicians answer.

  • KenelmDigby

    This is true.
The Immigration Act of 1971 offered substantial cash bounties for ‘commonwealth’ immigrants willing to go home. The Act was passed after Powellite agitation (so much for Mr. Contessini’s contention).
Unfortunately, successive governments were ‘ashamed’ of this provision, (which is still written in UK law), and haven’t had the guts to publicize and implement it.

    that is not progress

When it comes to cruelty, Germany takes the cake, at least in the 20’th century, having killed upwards of 50 million fellow Europeans in the Second World War alone. That includes 6 million Jews, 20 million Russians and millions of Poles, French, Dutch, Gypsies and Slavs. Their record of mass murder is probably unparalleled since the time of Gengis Khan.

The Turkish state cannot take responsibility for the Ottoman empire’s actions, but they do have the right to protect themselves from PKK terrorists who have been menacing their country for decades.

Turkish immigrants in Germany own and operate a staggering 80,000 businesses, with a turnover of upwards of 40 billion Euros and provided a source of cheap labour which contributed to Germany’s post war economic rise. That said, Germans have had a tendency to view their minorities as a liability and liked to see the backs of Jews, Slavs, Gypsies for a long time. So their less than enlightened attitude towards ethnic Turks is not exactly surprising.
