Where the Black People at in OC?

Gustavo Arellano, OC Weekly, May 30, 2013

If Orange County were separated from Los Angeles and considered its own metropolitan area (and isn’t it about time? There’s only about 3.1 million of us, you know), we’d rank as one of only two metro areas in the nation’s 25 largest with an African-American population of less than 5 percent—and we’d clock in at a pathetically low 2.1 percent. Of all of OC’s many embarrassments, this is by far the worst—2.1 percent? In the 21st century? In a county that’s otherwise wildly diverse? WTF?

Yet when we at the Weekly point this out, we get a collective shrug from OC residents, or mumbled excuses about how black people don’t want to live here because black people don’t live here. {snip}

Why does this skewed demography matter? Because the harvest of such a pathetic situation bears its bitter fruit seemingly every year, with juvenile incidents that make us the butt of the national media again and again, incidents that can only originate from people who grew up or live without black people around them. Fraternities donning blackface for music videos. Surf shops deciding that a 50 percent-off-all-black-items sale for Martin Luther King Jr. Day is somehow funny. Bartenders writing, “McStinkynigger” and, “McNigshit” on the receipts of their black customers. Congressmen comparing Nelson Mandela to a rapist.

Enough’s enough. It’s time we call out our eternal shame. And this package of stories does that. We’ll start with Michelle Woo’s sobering report on the state of being black at UC Irvine, one of the most diverse campuses in the United States, yet one in which African-American students get harassed on an almost-daily basis. Music editor Nate Jackson reflects on growing up African-American in OC—an interesting life, to put it mildly. And I chime in with a timeline of the silliness we’ve put OC’s African-Americans through over the past century.

  • Well, if there is ONE place that needs a good ol’ fashioned dose of diversity, it is Orange County. Why don’t you just go out to Watts and invite some to move in there, Gustavo?

    • Greg Thomas

I live in OC. We have plenty of section 8 blacks, along with hordes of illegal invading mexicans. Gustavo is a la raza racist, who dreams of the day his invaders will be a majority in this county.

      • asian migrants

Invaders is right. When will whites understand Spain and Spanish is caucasoid race white European and why everything is Latino and Hispanic in the west and in New Spain who gave independence to the in 1821 after 325 years of white Spanish rule? They renamed it Mexico.

White Hispanic Latinos are the real deal. The Asian migrant mongoloids who came to the west over the Bering land bridge 1500 yrs ago are not a native species but of the red yellow mongoloid Asian race who flooded here by the millions like they do now north of the border.
They are Asian migrant invaders. They never owned America. The name is European origin since 1512 when it was officially used after the Italian explorer who notated this was a new hemisphere and not India.

        • Greg Thomas

The illegal invading mexicans jumping our border are not White. I’ve been to mexico city (and travled throughout mexico) plenty
of times and have seen the White Europeans of Spanish decent for which you speak.
These are not the ones invading our country. We get the dark, squat mestizos that have next to no White in them. These are also the ones mexico does not want, the bottom of the barrel sort of speak.

        • FatMan

They didn’t rename anything Mexico! The so called ‘Aztecs’ called themselves MEXICA. The only reason the spanish called them ‘Aztecs’ was because of their passionate descriptions of their origins (theological in nature) in a place they called Aztlan…

      • Funruffian

Which town do you live in? Garden Grove?

        • Greg Thomas

          • Funruffian

Are you serious?? Section 8 projects are now in HB?? OMG! I never thought that would happen. Scummington Beach isn’t the most exclusive beach in the OC, but I never thought I would learn about this.

  • Some Guy

To this anti-American it’s not about equality, it’s about destroying anything White and traditional. Too many white people, it must be bad!

  • Bandmo

Need more “Cheerios”, yes the breakfast of?……forgot the word.

    • Elfego

  • The Guardian

The Blacks that moved in would probably be the subjects of intense harassment and possible murder. The county is a hotbed on Klan and Neo-Nazi activity.

    • Unperson

I assure you that in California, Mexicans harass and persecute blacks far more than the groups you mention. Any blacks in Orange County are way more afraid of Mexicans ganging up on them than those Caucasian boogeymen who scarcely exist outside of the imaginations of lazy Hollywood screenwriters. Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca has even described it using the term “ethnic cleansing.”

And if you won’t take it from me, maybe you’ll take it from the Barack Obama-Eric Holder US Dept of Justice:

Aguilar and Marquez allegedly are members of the Compton 155 street gang, which uses violence and threats of violence in an effort to drive African-Americans out of their “territory” on the west side of Compton. According to the indictment, members of the Compton 155 gang often refer to themselves as “NK” or “N***** Killers.” To instill fear in African-Americans, members of the gang tag their gang moniker and “NK” throughout their “territory.”

Gustavo Arellano must be the only Hispanic in OC who wants more, not less, blacks in town.

      • Stop Immigration Now!

The fact is the harass Whites to. Deport them.

    • Token Finn

Are you sure you’re not reading and citing the back cover of a straight to DVD film there? Could be one with actual theatre distribution for all I know.

  • Rhialto

Some people take even the most absurd and asinine statements seriously. So I hope the readers of this giveaway paper realize that this article is a joke. The OC Weakly is just having some fun, and possibly publicizing OC as a good place to live.

    • Vanga

Rhialto, you are wrong, wrong, wrong. Alternative newspapers are staffed with losers who want desperately to work in the mainstream media. They try to make their bones by being as anti-white as possible. The author is calling attention to the overwhelming whiteness of OC not for satire but because he wants to impress the true powers in media with his being offended by whiteness.

Unlike the mainstream media, the alternative media make no pretense at all of objectivity. It’s like liberal media on steroids.

      • Potestas Tenebrarum

Check. This guy Arellano has his own webpage, mostly promoting a book of his called “Ask A Mexican,” full of Mexican self-promotion and anti-white jibes.

        • Greg Thomas

He’s a militant la raza racist.

      • AllSeeingEyeSpy

“Unlike the mainstream media, the alternative media make no pretense at all of objectivity. It’s like liberal media on steroids”.

        I wish I could friend you. . .

      • KenelmDigby

        Absolutely right.

    • E.Bay

There are alot of gays living in Orange County.

      • guest

Not at all. It’s about 1% like anywhere else. There was an enclave in Laguna Beach 30 years ago+. Most died from AIDS and the rest moved away. I don’t care for them, but at least they don’t shoot at you. I believe OC is about 40% white. There are white enclaves but it’s mostly a combo Mexican and Asian. The 405 freeway is extremely dangerous and third world because of Mexicans…even in Orange County. You can avoid most of the Mexicans by driving on the toll road. It’s expensive, but your life is worth it.

        • Funruffian

There are many Chicanos and lower-middle class Mexicans in OC, but you would have to go to cities like Santa Ana, Garden Grove, Cerritos and Anaheim where there is a high concentration of them.
As far as Laguna Beach and gays are concerned I will agree with E. Bay. Laguna, sometimes referred to as Faguna, had a gay mayor for awhile. The beach town of 20,000 is also home to the Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters which is held annually. It attracts many artsy fartsy people who are also the hippie dippy type. Fortunately, that art culture doesn’t attract too many Blacks.

  • jay11

Why are cities like Detroit almost all non-white and decidedly non-diverse? Where is the outrage and soul-searching among blacks that they are unwelcoming to whites? Oh, I remember now, those were ORIGINALLY white cities that blacks invaded and took over through a campaign of relentless low level violence and ethnic cleansing! They are never happy with what they take over, but like locusts move on to the next easy pickins’.

  • The__Bobster

Why is it “embarrassing” to have a shortage of Zulus? It’s not like having a shortage of money. Money is useful. Spoonies are not.

  • The__Bobster

We’ll start with Michelle Woo’s sobering report on the state of being black at UC Irvine, one of the most diverse campuses in the United States, yet one in which African-American students get harassed on an almost-daily basis

Yeah, right. Do you have a bridge to sell me, too?

    • jambi19

LOL yes those Asian college students are surely burning crosses in the black student union.

      • Tell The Truth

If anything, the likely suspects would be Whites.

        • jambi19

There are no likely suspects. It’s called a joke.

    • dogbone

It depends on how “harassment” is defined. If a math or science professor tells a black person they need to do an assignment in order to complete the class. That is considered harassment to black people. Black people think a university degree is about having sex with white woman and partying. How dare a professor harass them with school work. They won’t have to do work in the real world, so why should the have to do it in school.

  • bigone4u

The comment about black students being harassed on a daily basis at the local university is ridiculous and a great big LIE. What happens is blacks as usual act inconsiderately and are politely asked THE FIRST TIME to tone it down. Sometime they start **** immediately, but other times after multiple instances of being asked politely to tone it down, somebody starts something. Gustavo is full of you know what. Just another reporter with a deadline to meet and so he writes junk to keep his editor off his case.

    • Working Student

As a non-traditional student who attends UC Irvine on a half time basis,, I can attest to the fact that students of color have and are frequently the victims of on campus harassment from campus security, fellow students and in some cases, professors. So before you spout off with your blowhard, inaccurate comments , you should know the facts first!

      • kjh64

I don’t believe that for one second. Blacks are catered to everywhere and UC Irvine or any other university is a hotbed for extreme political correctness. Blacks can go to a White campus or in a White neighborhood safely however Whites can’t go into Black neighborhoods without being in serious danger.

  • Dave4088

Just 2%? That sounds like 2% too many to me, but to Obama and Holder that looks like disparate impact. They better build some housing projects and import some welfare queens and baby daddies so OC can be blessed with flash mobs, drive by shootings, gang banging and other vibrant and enriching activities that blacks bring.

    • Jefferson

2 percent is a lot better than than national average which is 13 percent Black. In a 13 percent Black nation if you live in an area that is only 2 percent Black, consider yourself lucky.

  • sbuffalonative

Surf shops deciding that a 50 percent-off-all-black-items sale for Martin Luther King Jr. Day is somehow funny.

Well, I always know to buy a new mattress on President’s Day.

    • APaige

It would honor MLK’s true character if they gave a discount to all plagiarists.

    • Unperson

Buying a new mattress on MLK Day would also be appropriate — but only if you intend to use that mattress for abusing white hookers during three-day “bottle parties”.

  • Ronald

Perhaps the reason “Black” migration into Orange County is lagging is because of the county’s large non-“Black” “Hispanic” population. They don’t pussy-foot around with them, and they don’t feel a bit guilty because of it.

  • So CAL Snowman

A hispanic (Gustavo Arrellano) asking where the black people are? Priceless. Maybe in his next article Gustavo can ask why Disney has yet again raised ticket prices for admission to Disneyland in majority Mexican Anaheim.

    • Fighting_Northern_Spirit

Indeed, it’s Gustavo Arrellano’s people who are driving blacks out of California. The irony is strong with this one.

      • John

His compatriots have a lot more sense than he does. The article reads like an Onion parody. Only the most dimwitted buffoon can fail to notice what happens when large numbers of Blacks live in a community. I strongly suspect that he’s status-whoring and wouldn’t really want to live around blacks in any great numbers.

  • Seek

Why is it embarrassing for Orange County to have blacks constitute “only” about 2 percent of the total popualtion? What would be embarrassing is if the figure were anything above that. This author, an Hispanic I presume, is either moronic or evil. And in this context, it hardly makes a difference.

    • Jefferson

Gustavo should move to Compton, if he feels embarrassed by Orange County’s lack of Blackness.

  • joemcgee

I’m no scholar in any way, but I’d be ashamed to put my name on this sophomoric scribbling…

  • Erasmus

When I first saw my niece run at a HS track meet, I remember thinking what a nice-looking, wholesome bunch of polite, well-behaved people, there to watch their children run. Then I realized there were only a small handful of blacks and Hispanics there and understood why. No thuggish behavior. No loud music. No spitting, smoking, swearing or other loutish behavior.

  • libertarian1234

Some of the most atrocious racial fighting has occurred in Orange County and is continuing right now, and ALL of it involves blacks and Hispanics.

This OC paper has some of the most incapable, ignorant people I’ve ever read on their staff.

    • Funruffian

You have to specify which area exactly has gang violence. The only two cities that come to mind are Garden Grove and the Northeast side of Anaheim. Otherwise, Orange County is pretty awesome.
I know the area very well and can tell you that the beach cities from Dana Point all the way up through Laguna Beach to Huntington Beach are very safe. If you go a little bit inland toward Tustin, Yorba Linda and Fullerton the crime index is still very low.
Yorba Linda has an even lower crime index than Newport Beach.
The city of Orange, Garden Grove, and the North side of Anaheim has crime, but not much. If you go further North west toward Westminster and Fountain Valley the amount of crime rises. Overall, the area is still low on crime.

      • libertarian1234

“You have to specify which area exactly has gang violence. ”
I wasn’t referring to crime in general or gang violence.
The entire Southern California area has ongoing black/Hispanic fighting.
OC has had several incidents the authorities are calling hate crimes that involve blacks and Hispanics.

      • Jefferson

What is the crime index in areas of Los Angeles where the percentage of Black people is in the double digits/above 10 percent ?

        • Funruffian

Inglewood, WATTS, south-central LA are the most Black infested I know of. Also south of LAX and east of the South bay beaches are Torrance, Lawndale and Hawthorne which have around 20% Black.

          • Jefferson

Any area that is at least 20 percent Black, sounds like a very undesirable place to live.

          • a multiracial individual
          • Funruffian

Sorry about Torrance. My bad. But Torrance is a neighboring city to Hawthorne where marauding Blacks filter through. So it seems that even though Torrance is only 3% Black, on occasions it seems much higher do to Black vagrancy.

  • APaige

We are they at? Destroying their own neighborhoods. I bet OC has low crime and great schools, right?

    • Potestas Tenebrarum

Yes. We’d like to keep it that way. But what do you think the odds are that we’ll succeed, now that we’re apparently in the cross-hairs of the Enlightened Ones?

  • Spartacus

    I nearly vomited reading this…

  • AnonymousTruther

Black people make up only 14% of the population, yet liberals think they should be 100% of the politicians, 100% of athletes, 100% of doctors, 100% of college students, 100% of engineers, 100% of journalists, 100% of teachers, 100% of EVERYTHING.

Enough. There just aren’t that many black people even if you took them seriously. In a group of 100 people, 14 of them will be black and that is 100% representation. Liberals call reality “racist”. Stop the “racist” witch hunting, and move on with your lives.

    • [Guest]

      >>>In a group of 100 people, 14 of them will be black and that is 100% representation.

I understand your point, but …

Name any pursuit that requires intellect, insight, foresight, diligence, and hard work, and the number of blacks will be closer to zero than to 14 out of 100. Now name any pursuit that is backward, primitive, uncivilized or even barbaric, and the number is likely to be close to 100 out of 100.

      • Jefferson

Blacks definitely DO not make up 14 percent of all job fields in the U.S that require a triple digit I.Q.

You do not need a triple digit I.Q to be a rapper, NFL player or an NBA player.

    • jay11

I also get that impression. If there isn’t a black running the show, regardless of the racial composition of the group, the liberals are upset. They’ve been programmed to feel that way for some time, especially the more vocal 20-something liberals. They’ve grown up on a steady diet of movies and TV shows where the black man is always the president, head doctor, wise guide, key player in the pivotal moment, voice of reason, etc. I am so used to seeing it myself, I am no longer surprised. I am just old enough to be insulated from the kool aide.

Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington and Will Smith have collectively accomplished a major feat of social engineering and influence.

  • Eric Shun

Where the Black People at in OC? Don’t know, but some of them were at the wedding of Sen. John McCain’s son, including the bride!

Lt. Jack McCain married Renee Swift at lavish ceremony in San Francisco…

He obviously wants a future political career in multi-racial amerika. He’s just setting everything up now.

    • Seek

Looks like Dad’s been asleep at the switch.

    • John

Yes, Jack McShame, son of Juan McShame, is burning the coal.

Don’t forget that John Boehner’s daughter married a Black savage from the Caribbean, Paul Ryan has had episodes of jungle fever, Dick Cheney’s daughter is a militant lesbian, and Jeb Bush is married to a Mestizo mongrel from Colombia. There’s plenty of coal burning, miscegenation, amalgamation, and other unsavory and undesirable actions and outcomes within the Republican Party.

Conservatives are no longer represented in the government and haven’t been for a long time. While the White race is slowly amalgamating itself out of existence, the Republican Party has become the slightly-moderate wing of the Democratic Party; virtually indistinguishable from the hard-core leftists in every way that matters.

All of the multicultural horrors that plague America today would never have been possible without the leadership of the Republican Party. I see no difference between them and the Democrats.
One can only look on in astonishment and bewilderment. There are no words to describe that has happened to civilization. This is just the beginning, my friends.

  • Funruffian

I grew up around the OC during the 70’s and 80’s and it was a touch of heaven, because you would rarely ever see a Black.
I also recall never seeing a single Black on the beach during the mid 70’s. The one time I saw a Black family on the beach around 1976 it was very odd as they looked so out of place.
The OC became diverse during the 90’s with Asians, especially at UC Irvine. But Blacks are still very rare. The reason why OC and its neighboring beach cities are so crowded and expensive is due to the awesome climate and very low percentage of Blacks.

    • Jefferson

With the exception of Sacramento or as I call it Bantumento, most areas of California that are north of The Bay Area, also has very few Blacks.

I have some family in Roseville, California. Roseville is also very Nonblack just like Orange County.

  • anarchyst

Diversity and multiculturalism–the genocide of the white race–imposed by those of the “tribe” . . .

  • Luca

These Weekly papers are okay as birdcage liners, for wrapping fish guts or for reading escorts/hooker ads. But as for journalism, just look at their childish headline: “Where the Black People At?” Really? if they were attempting ebonics it should read “Where all the MF’n blacks at?”

As usual, liberals take a non-event and turn it into a social crisis. Hard to believe that even the hookers still advertise in these rags, I actually thought they had more class than that.

    • Nathanwartooth

Where da Blacks be at? Gnome sayin’?

  • Talltrees

It’s called ‘redlining.’ See this particularly in Corona Del Mar, a small town within Newport Beach. Anyone renting or buying faced a third-degree and approval panel, even if White. Owning a Mercedes helped to get in.
Was a 100% White community prior to the mid-90’s. Now, it’s been infiltrated by Asians with Mercedes.

    • Funruffian

I would rather have wealthy Asians than Bantus.

      • IstvanIN

        How about neither?

        • Jefferson

Do Asians rape White women ? Nope. They don’t come from the mah dick culture.

  • curri

Even Gustavo Arellano isn’t dumb enough to believe this crap-but he is smart enough to know that his position as an Affirmative Active journalist is dependent on regurgitating PC nonsense. Or at least that’s the easy way out for a lazy and mediocre hack.

  • IKantunderstand

I completely agree with Gustavo Arellano, pour more Blacks into O.C. In fact, I want to see MORE Blacks living in all rich White enclaves. Let’s start with the state of Vermont. They don’t have nearly enough diversity. As a matter of fact, we should start up a fund called “Send Diversity to Vermont” I bet if we all contributed only ten dollars each, we could manage to pay for all kinds of diversity to move to Vermont. The next fund we could contribute to? Well, the islands off Massachusetts: Martha’s Vineyard, and Nantucket. I know for a fact, that neither of these two islands have any poor people, Muslims, Sihks, or any REAL diversity. Section 8 housing now! All of us, rich and poor, should partake in diversity. ALL OF OF US. From Malibu and wherever else those Hollywood hypocrites live to Hyannis Port. Every Liberal voting enclave should be swamped with diversity. If I were a billionaire, that is what I would do with my money.

    • Potestas Tenebrarum

Great idea! I would add as targets for such “vibrant diversity transplants” places up North like Big Sur, Marin County, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Portland, Whidbey Island… all the places here in California and the other Pacific states chock-a-block with rich white liberals, but without any blacks within a hundred mile radius, whose oh-so-progressive inhabitants like to cluck their tongues and roll their eyes about the alleged lack of and need for black people in Orange County….

  • Basketeddie

Wonder what their crime rate is?

  • Orange County’s asians are Vietnamese and the older ones are loyal to the Republican party, whereas their children are not unfortunately.

Its very similar to the white Cubans in South Florida. Parents loyal Republicans. Children think their Mexican and vote for Democrats.

The writer if you look is fascinated with trying to say hate crimes are so bad in OC.

  • PesachPatriot

If they need more blacks in the OC they should try and put some ads in the papers in west palm beach, ft. lauderdale, miami, tampa, orlando, jacksonville, tallahassee and pensacola….we have plenty here in Florida….california does have legal cannabis and lots of dippy white and asian girls who love rap music, maybe some will start moving out there.

  • MekongDelta69

Gustavo ‘La Raza‘ Arellano is what passes for journalism in the ghetto-mindset in the New America.

Nothing’s keeping Mr. La Raza from moving to South Central, Compton or East Ellllll Laaaaaaa, where his homies ‘be at.’ (if I can use literary license to borrow a phrase from our esteemed author of the article – aka Mr. Grammar.)

But then again, one of the very most important traits of a leftist is that you absolutely HAVE to be a hypocrite.
“Diversity for thee, but not for me.”
“Free speech for me, but not for thee.”

With that said, allow me to end this with the same eloquent phrase this brown ‘Shakespeare’ used… WTF??

  • TonyWestfield

The author of this article, Mr. Arellano, is a perfect specimen of the New Left. Leftists have always been idiots, but I remember when the idiots seemed sincere with their stated objective “to comfort the afflicted, and to afflict the comfortable.” The New Left skips the first part and goes straight to afflicting the comfortable. That’s all they do.

  • Old Crow

Successive waves of African American migrations out of the cotton South made cities such as Detroit, Chicago and Milwaukee the multicultural and diverse paradises celebrated by so many today. Just as Governor Wallace of Alabama, in the 1960s, threatened Gov. Thompson of Illinois with making Chicago even more diverse by releasing Alabama’s black prison population into his care quickly shut him up, perhaps mayor Rahm could make the city fathers of OC happy by offering a similar solution to their shortage problem.

“Surf shops deciding that a 50 percent-off-all-black-items sale for Martin Luther King Jr. Day is somehow funny”

I was expecting someone to compare these possibly ‘made up’ incidents, with real crimes committed by blacks against whites, like murder. Or, say, some activist at the local college proclaiming kill whitey. Do we have a course syllabus? And should I be disappointed no one compared actual incidents?

  • White Mom in WDC

‘Where are the black people at?’ My answer: who cares?

  • AllSeeingEyeSpy

If they only put Half the effort they put into keeping whites from being racist and instead put that effort into keeping people of color from being racist: this is the only realistic way to improve the world today. Unfortunately, any effort to restrain people of color would be seen as racist.

  • Ted

The demographic fact of a white Orange County calls to mind what I find interesting in Texas
recently. Communities who hold the line and remain very large majority seem merely by
force of numbers to cause most Mexican “settlers” to gravitate toward those communities in which myopic community “boosters” have been (initially) welcoming of influx. “Holding the
line” is a legally risky task and detailed information of how it can be accomplished is much needed. This is probably accomplished best by short stories or novels or video drama–to reveal the linkages between acts and omissions, on the one hand, and demographic consequences, on the other. The Alamo, all over again.

  • Frank Wheeler

Awww…… isn’t that cute? Gustavo Arellano thinks he’s a white Liberal. i would love to know what this guy’s zip code is and for how long he’s lived in non-black areas his whole life. BTW there is no law stopping black people from moving into the OC. This guy makes no sense (yeah I know, big surprise) he states how blacks are humiliated in the OC and yet more of them should live there!

    • Potestas Tenebrarum

His webpage says he is “lecturer with the Chicana and Chicano Studies department at California State University, Fullerton,” so I bet he lives in or near Fullerton, a mostly white “college town,” rather than with his hermanos further south in central Anaheim and Santa Ana, both heavily Mexican areas.

    • Greg Thomas

Gustavo hates Whites and is a militant La Raza racist.

No wonder the OC is so nice. Say what you will about Hispanics (and what you say will be true) but I will kill for them over blacks. Even in “Hispania” the degenerative effects of blacks are obvious.
