Clemson Gets 5 Million to Advance Blacks in Science

Sigourney Nunez, Loop 21, May 21, 2013

The grant will be used to launch the Institute for African American Mentoring in Computing Sciences.

In an effort to increase African American participation in the computer science field, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded Clemson University a $5 million grant.

Serving as a national resource, with an emphasis in mentoring, Clemson University will use the grant to launch the Institute for African American Mentoring in Computing Sciences.

“African-Americans represent about 1 percent of the computer science faculty and researchers in the U.S.,” said Juan Gilbert, chairman of the Human-Centered Division at Clemson, in a written statement. “We formed this institute to increase the number of underrepresented groups earning computing science doctoral degrees and researchers in the academy, government and private sector.”

The institute will aim to increase the number of African American doctoral graduates who enter the workforce with a research focus and develop the future African American leaders with computing expertise in the academy, government and industry.

In collaboration with its partners, the University of Alabama, Auburn University, Carnegie Mellon University, Rice University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Winston-Salem State University, Clemson will extend the work of current NSF alliances and demonstration projects that utilize different strategies towards broadening the participation of African-Americans in computing sciences.

Ironically, the U.S. Senate is just days away from passing an immigration bill which vastly increases the annual H-1B allotment, and even worse than that, it implements the “Stapler” provision, i.e. stapling green cards to STEM-CSIT diplomas earned by those here on student visas. That will accomplish nothing but drastically lowering the wage scale in STEM-CSIT and effectively acing NBWAs out of that career track. Of course, these black computer “geniuses” won’t have to worry about that, because I’m sure Intel will hire them as human resources bureaucrats.

    • Morris LeChat

There wont be any black computer geniuses, this is a total waste of money.

      • The__Bobster

A lot of IT companies are importing Trinidadian “computer geniuses” to serve as furniture.

I would wager that many, if not all, of the trinidadians were indian or of majority indian heritage rather than negroids.

      • Charles W.

So true. You’ll even get the odd Mexican IT guy once in a while, but never a black.

      • Romulus

        Hurray

      • Paleoconn

They’re omnipresent in the movies. Like the black nerd codebreaker in Die Hard (‘and the quarterback is toast!’) not to mention the Samuel Jackson character in Jurassic Park. Or the creator of Skynet in T2: Judgment Night played by Joe Morton.

        Art imitating fantasy.

      • Observer

You mean like the young Black lady in Florida who is a straight A student and was arrested for practicing an innovative experiment.?

    • me

      Science!

      • This is hilarious.

    • The grant will be used to launch the Institute for African American Mentoring in Computing Sciences.

Diet Coke out the nose when I read that.
      .
This reads like an April Foold Day joke. Doctorates in CS for blacks? They are going to build the first successful commercially produced quantum computer? Just donate the money to the schools’ black fraternities’ party funds. Either way it is being pissed away.
      .
QD is right, the only PhD they might get in CS is a Phd in CS HR Management. Which is over kill in the degree ….

    • sbuffalonative

Little (if any) bang for the bucks. Good money after bad. Take your pick.
It’s too bad this is being paid for by our tax money but it’s yet another experiment that needs to be done. The results are a foregone conclusion but they will be noteworthy (and ultimately hidden from public scrutiny).

  • Read between the lines here. The real scientists know that diversity is a load of pyrite.
What’s their angle? Diverting attention away?
Give $5 million, but get $10 million back?

    • Oil Can Harry

True. BTW, did you see the author’s name? Sigourney Nunez.

Let me guess: a burrito-bender decided to name his anchor-baby daughter after his favorite actress from the “Alien” movie series.

  • thurlow

Prediction: $5 million yields three more bantus with BS in Biology/Chemistry/Geology, eight new administrators and a new major at the university – The History of African Science.

    • shmo123

You may be right, but I think they’ll shoot for the moon and set up a course of study to rival NASSA (The Negro American Space Society of Astronauts). They can then attempt to emulate Loopy Louis Hayes and Suitcase Jefferson, two pioneers who landed their modified Coupe De Ville near the Sea of Tranquility on September 31, 1966. That news was blacked out at the time, depriving those trailblazers of their rightful place in history.

    • Romulus

      The optimal acronym being BS.

  • Rhialto

I and others have posted this before, but it is needed. A black who has the intelligence and initiative to succeed in computer technology, has the intelligence to know that other fields will be more desirable. Orientals and Indians, who are also Diversityites, are gobbling up the computer jobs. Much better for a black with a 130+ iQ to go into law, medicine, administration, crime, etc. In these fields, the black’s social and language skills (something the Indians and Asians lack) will be a big plus.

This is another waste of Fedgov money.

    • Intrepid

Asians don’t lack language or social skills. That’s just a stereotype.

      • The__Bobster

Obviously, you’ve never had one of them as an underpaid TA.

      • White Mom in WDC

No they are just mean anti whites and most of them voted for Obama

    • The__Bobster

Also, an engineer’s salary caps out rather rapidly, due to the brown foreign imports

    • josh

Plus he DOESNT HAVE TO WORK.

    • YTisPissed

Hahaha, 130+ IQ? Show me one!

  • professor

When first reading this article I thought for sure it must be a joke. Can’t wait for all the black programmers to take the podium with all the astute black brain surgeons, propulsion scientists and genetic engineers. Maybe we’ll see a rap based python or gambas. ” My format is in java, sisters use godel, if you don’t like my hyperlink then you can go to h–l !!”

  • ncpride

Sheesh, what a waste of money. On another note, some of you may recall my post several weeks ago about my daughter’s new US History teacher, and how great I thought she was going to be. Well, I’m thrilled to report she is every bit as awesome as I predicted. What does that have to do with this thread? Yesterday, (while discussing various Presidents) she blasted Affirmative Action and today, she went on a rampage about ‘No Child Left Behind’, telling the class that some ‘groups’ of kids are just stupid and need to be left behind. She went on to say that it was not fair to other students, since NCLB forces teachers to ‘teach’ to the lowest common denominator. I KNOW this woman knows the real score…….How rare is it for kids these days to get a different, but truthful prespective from a public school?

    • jambi19

      Can I assume private school?

    • Basketeddie

      Hopefully she has tenure.

      • ncpride

According to my research, NC teachers are usually given tenure after 4 years of teaching. I know this particular teacher has been there for at least 10 years, so I am assuming, yes. However, our legislators are apparently working hard to do away with teacher tenure all together. I’m conflicted over that one. It seems to me tenure can be a double edged sword.

      • josh

        Hopefully she is single!!

  • bigone4u

Good reporting, but the tip of the iceberg. Texas has already for the last 20 plus years spent way more than $5 million to advance Hispanics and Blacks in math and science. Look up the PREP program. It’s nationwide and under the radar screen. Lots of money spent on hand holding minorities. The math and science profs are under enormous pressure to get minorities through to the doctoral level. Standards have been going to hell for at least the last 10 years.
If minorities can’t succeed then lower the bar and then hire them yourself. Where the hell are the lawsuits challenging this bull bleep?

  • JackKrak

Why doesn’t Clemson just get on the phone to Hollywood?
Movie studios obviously have a secret formula that magically changes blacks into computer experts, judges, doctors, professors and the like with a snap of their fingers.

    • bigone4u

Universities today are living in as big a fantasy world as Hollywood, as documented by numerous stories on this website. In my experience, many minority profs and students are “acting” the part.

      • josh

Dont forget Stand And Deliver, some ugly guy with hair plugs taught the mestizoes calculus.

        • Alexandra1973

I actually have that movie on DVD (which I bought years ago).
I have to wonder what the real story is behind that.
How about “Lean on Me”? If you watch it with your eyes open, you’ll notice that in the opening scenes, when the school is a great place, it’s majority white. In the present day (1987 in the movie) it’s majority black.

Morgan Freeman the maff teacher? I love it!

Through the Wormhole is an awesome series. Morgan Freeman did all of those physics calculations himself right?

“Why not use the $5 million to make the basketball team more diverse?”

Because they don’t want literal diversity. They want minority success at the expense of whites.

In other news Columbia Records has given a grant of $5 million to advance the Institute for Deaf Music Producers (IDMP).

    • You laugh, but UofW just graduated a deaf doctor.

      • ncpride

I actually think this is pretty awesome. I knew without a single doubt before clicking on your links these doctors would be White males, and I was right. Who else could set such precedent in this country….seriously? Kudos to these guys for overcoming major obstacles most of us can’t imagine.

  • a multiracial individual

Between 100,000 and 150,000 Blacks in the US have an IQ of 125 or higher. That is still enough people to fill plenty of science jobs.

    • Triarius

Yet I have seen more sightings of Bigfoot than an African American with a 125 IQ.

    • JohnEngelman

Because of affirmative action policies they have many opportunities handed to them that equally intelligent whites have to work for, and that many do not get.

      • a multiracial individual

Affirmative action? For big companies? Yes. For small businesses? Absolutely not.

Although, to your point, many recent law school graduates are struggling to find work. Many are taking jobs that are not actually attorney work. In our office, we have some young attorneys doing work like this right now. A young Black female attorney was stuck in our office for a couple of months doing work like this before she got a job with a bigger firm. She wasn’t with us very long. She left behind three young blonde attorneys. In fairness they all appeared similarly competent

    • Sherman_McCoy

Much easier to get a do-nothing job in the diversity department.

    • LastBastionOfHope

Lol well they must be living on some other island somewhere, because I can only think of one: Neil Degrasse Tyson

      • a multiracial individual

It is possible they skip academia for more lucrative careers in the businessworld.

    – Sigourney Nunez, Loop 21, May 21, 2013

Even that is due to affirmative action policies. I wonder how many of that one percent would be there if they had had to perform as well as whites.

  • boogieboogie

If you gave $5 mil to one person to teach one black with qualified IQ for this field,if we pay him 200,000 a year for 25 years, could he succeed????
what a joke and I cannot believe CLEMSON is doing this!!!!!!!
    total waste.

  • gemjunior

When will these libs stop pouring money down the drain ? This makes about as much sense as putting a billion dollars into a shredder. When will they finally admit the futility of it all? Pearls before swine.

I thought the reduction of cocaine hydrochloride to the water insoluble base had already been ‘mastered’…..Am I missing something?

  • Frank Wheeler

If Obama has recently called for an end of excuse making for black people then what would be his explanation be for the lack of blacks in computer science? Answer: A bunch of excuses.

  • josh
