Deal Approved in Muslims’ Suit against McDonald’s

Jeff Karoub, Yahoo! News, April 17, 2013

A judge on Wednesday finalized a $700,000 settlement between McDonald’s Corp. and members of Michigan’s Muslim community over claims a suburban Detroit restaurant falsely advertised its food as prepared according to Islamic law.

Ahmed Ahmed, the Dearborn Heights man who represents plaintiffs in the class-action suit, claims he bought a chicken sandwich in September 2011 at the restaurant but found it wasn’t halal. Islam forbids consumption of pork, and God’s name must be invoked before an animal providing meat for consumption is slaughtered.

The McDonald’s restaurant chain and one of its franchise owners agreed in January to the tentative settlement that would be shared by Ahmed, as well as a Muslim-run Detroit health clinic, the Arab American National Museum in Dearborn and lawyers.

The lawsuit technically covered anyone who bought the halal-advertised products between September 2005 and January from the restaurant and another McDonald’s in the city with a different owner. The other location wasn’t a defendant or a focus of the investigation.

Dakhlallah has said he was approached by Ahmed, and they conducted an investigation. A letter sent to McDonald’s and the restaurant franchisee, Finley’s Management, by Dakhlallah’s firm said Ahmed had “confirmed from a source familiar with the inventory” that the restaurant had sold non-halal food “on many occasions.”

In the settlement notice, Finley’s Management said it “has a carefully designed system for preparing and serving halal such that halal chicken products are labeled, stored, refrigerated, and cooked in halal-only areas.” The company added it trains its employees on preparing halal food and “requires strict adherence to the process.”

McDonald’s attorney Thomas McNeill said the investigations and negotiations proved that if a problem arose, “it was isolated and rare.”

There are only two McDonald’s in the United States that sell halal products and both are in Dearborn, which has one of the nation’s largest Arab and Muslim communities. Overall, the Detroit area is home to about 150,000 Muslims of many ethnicities.

  • How does someone ‘find’ that a chicken sandwich is not halal?

This sounds like a set up.

    • Lygeia

If it touched a piece of bacon it is no longer halal.

      • NYB

One of the minimum wage employees alleged that non-halal chicken was substituted for actual Halal meat.
Halal products usually come from a halal butcher, of which there aren’t many in Michigan. The halal butcher who won the contract from McD’s would have been keenly interested in catching McD’s in an infidel lie.

        • The__Bobster

Which is another good reason for deporting these people. When in Rome….

        • StillModerated

Apparently you’ve not been to Dearborn lately. Halal butchers abound in that part of Michigan. And realtors’ signs are in Arabic.

          • D

I worked in Dearborn for 30 years. little be little t has be turned from a beautiful city to a middle eastern slum, sad but true

      • Paleoconn

We shouldn’t know these things. The words halal and kosher and burqa and niqab shouldn’t be in our lexicon.

        • Alexandra

My husband works at a snack food plant and he told me–I kid you not–that once a month there’s some Jewish rabbi that comes in and “blesses” the snacks. So it’s kosher.
I have nothing against Jews (I am no anti-Semite), but it is ridiculous. Laws concerning clean/unclean meats were for the Israelites…but given they generally don’t believe the New Testament….

          • Paleoconn

Nothing against them either, but I object to having their culture forced on me so that I have to know what kosher and dreidle and mazel tov mean, the latter is even in the song by the Blacke-Eyed Peas.

Judeo-Christian is a fabricated term. Our western culture and society is Christian, period.

Btw, I read in another article how many Jews are leaving Europe because of rising anti-semitism. We were always told how anti-semitic Europeans are, but I guess there is no anti-semitism like the brand recent Muslim imports bring with them. Ditto sexism, homophobia, and the rest of the evils invented and perpetrated by all White Christian males since the dawn of time.

          • NYB

            I beg to differ.

With all respect, Christianity is an imported Abrahamic creed which began as a sub-sect of Judaism. It came around Europe after the foundations of Western civilization were laid in Athens and Rome.

The values of white Europe lifted the Christ Cult to greatness, but lately it is dragging whites down into a multicultural hellhole. I’d rather draw my spiritualism from exclusively white Druidism, Wiccan or Odinism than multicultural Christianity.

          • StillModerated

The Christ Cult is precisely what raised White Europe up from the ruins of the Roman Empire. If you don’t like Christianity, then just shut up about it.

          • Michael_C_Scott

Actually, it is what forced abandonment of classical knowledge that the Arabs and Persians preserved. The Dark Ages were for the most part self-inflicted.

          • Paleoconn

You should read pastor Chuck Baldwin on vDare. There is nothing in Christianity which pushes multicult, in fact quite the opposite the Bible stresses the importance of nations even if we are all God’s children. Ditto open borders, nothing Christian about that.

Without Christianity,,western civilization would have been wiped out around the time Rome fell.

Also, Christianity and Judaism are vastly different. Jesus is recognized as a prophet in the Koran too, that doesn’t make Islam and Christianity brothers. Also, how many people practise wicca and druidism?

          • Alexandra

Chuck Baldwin’s on vDare? Awesome. I voted for him in ’08.

          • Paleoconn

Yes, he writes there about biweekly I’d say, not as regularly as some others like Steve Sailer, James Fulford, Pat Buchanan, Michelle Malkin.

I believe his son is running for some sort of office too, and they are publishing a book together on Christianity and 2A, ie. he normally blasts other pastors and religious leaders who betray their flock by telling them to be obedient to government even when government abuses its power and concocts ridiculous, freedom-limiting, and tyrannical laws.

          • Michael_C_Scott

You beat me to it. Most of our law comes from pre-Christian Roman law and pre-Christian Germanic law.

          • Voice of Reason

“Germanic law” like what…? “Rome” conquered and Romanized Germania (with Christianity) after Germans sacked Rome, causing the Dark Ages.
Christianity and Roman civilization was alive and well in the Eastern Empire, the Byzantine Empire. The Dark Ages were only due to non-Roman savages.

          • Michael_C_Scott

Jury trial by peers was Saxon.

          • Voice of Reason

To be fair, Rome wasn’t idiotic. It adopted Christianity and needed it to conquer/tame the “savage Germanics.” Rome and Greece are responsible for Western culture, civilization, law codes, and society. But Christianity is responsible for European identity and a united Europe, under those Roman values.

You mean once a month a rabbi comes in, walks around, that leaves with an envelope full of money. That is Kosher.

          • anarchyst

That is the jewish “kosher” tax that is put on many food items. The “rabbinical blessing” does not come cheap.
Look for a letter “u” inside a circle. It is one of many symbols certifying food as “kosher”. There are many others. Google “kosher” . . .

    • JackKrak

      No doubt about it –
      -accusations hard/impossible to verify
      -certified “victim” group
      -deep pocket corporation
-strong to desire to make this story go away
Dream set up for lawyers and poor, exploited victims from Central Casting

    • Michael_C_Scott

It’s actually impossible to prove one way or another, which means this lawsuit was a sham. Leaving aside pork, blood, alcohol and carrion, the halal requirement is that the name of Allah must be invoked when the animal is slaughtered. Surah 5:5 in the Quran also says that “the food of the People of the Book (Jews and Christians) is lawful for you”, which plainly means that even without the invocation, the meat is still completely permitted.

  • Why would any one want to try and do business in Detroit??? I have watched that Pawn Shop in Detroit on TV and i would not put up with the rif-raff for it…..

    • MBlanc46

It’s suburban Detroit, where the whites went to escape the black invasion. Unfortunately, Dearborn wound up with the largest Arab community in the country. They’ve got some good Middle Eastern restaurants there. Why would anyone eat at McDonald’s?

      • Alexandra

Hamtramck used to be Polish (that’s where my mom met my natural father, in fact) and now I hear it’s all Muslim.
Glad I beat it out of Detroit 20 years ago. Living near the Amish in Ohio….

        • MBlanc46

Hamtramck is surrounded by Detroit. It was pretty rundown the last time I was there, but that was 15 years ago. I don’t know Dearborn Heights, but I used to visit Dearborn a couple of times a year. Too many Arabs but it was otherwise okay. Anyone who caters to the Muslims deserves what he gets.

        • StillModerated

Hamtramck is full of Bengalis now. All the corner saloons have become halal butchers.

  • MikeS

Why on earth would anyone want to do business of any kind with these people. Some people are just gluttons for punishment I guess. It’s time for the franchise to be taken out back and put down. Suff like this just emboldens them even more which, in turn, puts the average citizen in even more danger.

  • Good. I want Ronald McDonald to embrace diversity and pay for it.
Jack would not have put up with this, especially because he himself was the victim of a bombing over 30 years ago. Serves him right, selling horsemeat and all.

    • Bill

As I recall, way back when, it was actually kangaroo meat. In the 50’s. Yup, I’m that old. Burgers were 15 cents from McDonald’s then. Big scandal over it. Hence the claim ever since then of it being 100% beef. My friend (we were kids then) was hired by McD’s to pick up trash for like a dollar a day. Anyway, they almost went out of business back then due to the scandal. So…..from the beginning they were using kid labor, selling cheap product not really what is was supposed to be, and relying on imported meat not local.

      • MBlanc46

Upscale was never McD’s marketing strategy. I thought they were great in the ’50s (“Over 50 million sold!”), but I was just a kid.

Soon, any company that fights against Muslim lawsuits will be deemed a criminal enterprise.

  • bigone4u

Muslims and blacks: prickly, loud, and unreasonable. That’s gonna work out fine.

  • So CAL Snowman

I’m going to sue McDonald’s for falsely advertising it’s food as food. McDonald’s is like some science experiment gone horribly right.

    • evilsandmich

God’s name must be invoked before an animal providing meat for consumption is slaughtered.

No prob, there’s not meat in it.

  • carole smith

I guess every burger needs to come with a disclaimer.

  • You know what they say about Mcdonald’s “Unhealthy food, unhealthy values”. They lost me as a customer forever when they made the decision to go 365 black.

  • The__Bobster

There are only two McDonald’s in the United States that sell halal products and both are in Dearborn,

200,000 muzzies in Philly and there’s not a single halal McDarkie’s?

  • Bill

The award SHOULD have been a bacon double cheeseburger. One. With double bacon.

    • MBlanc46

Make that a bacon double McRib.

      • Sherman_McCoy

        With extra bacon, please.

  • Anon12

Just what McDonalds deserve! They only pander to blacks, mexicans and now arab muslims. I haven’t been to McDonalds in over 20 years..All I ever saw even back then were blacks, mexicans as the workers and the patrons!

    • Sloppo

I haven’t eaten there in about 35 years, but sometimes it’s a good place to stop and use the bathroom when you’re traveling. I wouldn’t even drink their water though.

    • Ned

      Yep, McDonalds deserves it alright.
Their business is failing for going 100% negro 365 days a year.
And now this moooozlem lottery to boot.
      What were they thinking?
Pandering to negroes always brings misery, chaos and poverty.

    • StillModerated

I gave up eating at Mickey D’s after Ray Kroc died. That was when bantu cooks started launching lungers in YT’s burgers.

  • Greg Thomas

I bet Ronald McDonald never knew just how expensive diversity would be. I hope they get their fill!

  • IstvanIN

Halal butchering should be banned as animal abuse. That would solve the problem.

  • Gep

BTW, any food, not just meat, that has been prepared in Halal fashion, cannot be consumed by practicing Christians according to the Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15:19-21)

    • Sloppo

That sounds right to me. I’m pretty sure Christians aren’t supposed to eat food sacrificed to idols, so Halal meat is off-limits for me.

      • Mr Potato

Yep. Don’t buy anything that’s certified halal.

    • Alexandra

You mean practicing Catholics. There’s a difference. (Did you know that Islam was created by Augustinian monks? It’s Catholicism for Arabs.)
The Bible says that forbidding meat is a doctrine of devils.

      • TeutonicKnight67

“Did you know that Islam was created by Augustinian monks? It’s Catholicism for Arabs.”
        Absolute rubbish.

  • Alexandra

Tell you what, if they don’t like the way we do things here, they are more than welcome to head back to whatever sandtrap they came from.

Many foreigners and blacks complain of how bad it is for them in the USA and how “wonderful” their home country is. My response is: “if it is so bad here and so “wonderful” in your home country, what are you doing here?? Go back to where you came from”. . . the look on their faces is priceless.
Black author Ben Richburg travelled to Africa to find his “roots”. After being recruited to fight in some of the many tribal internecine wars, he changed his stance. He actually was grateful that his ancestors came over as slaves to America. He admitted that his “quest” was a failure.
When I am called “racist”, I respond enthusiastically with “thank you for noticing”. I notice the same bewildered looks on the faces of my “accusers”.

  • dd121

Anybody that does not believe that Muslims are our existential enemies is a damn fool.

  • Michael_C_Scott

I think this is good news. McDonald’s has foisted monumentally unhealthy food onto the public both here and abroad for decades, and their advertising has deliberately targeted the people least capable of thinking for themselves – children and blacks. The corporation has spent its profits promoting gun control and diversity at every turn. McDonald’s has sued critics for libel in order to silence them. For a company that makes about US $5.5 billion net a year, $700,000 is chump change for their failed attempt to pander to invading Muhammadan cultists.

  • Corporations are true diversity pimps. They betray country, kith, and kin for cheap labor and new markets. The diversity machine is fueled more by corporate capital than Marxist passion.
