Businessweek Warns That Minorities May Be Buying Houses Again

Matthew Yglesias, Slate, February 28, 2013

Bloomberg Businessweek is a genuinely great magazine that does an amazing job of making business and economics news accessible and interesting, but this way of illustrating a cover story about the return of aggressive mortgage lending products is really something else.

The idea is that we can know things are really getting out of hand since even nonwhite people can get loans these days! They ought to be ashamed.

Update, 1:48 p.m.: Bloomberg Businessweek “apologizes” with a pretty categorical non-apology:

“Our cover illustration last week got strong reactions, which we regret,” Josh Tyrangiel, the magazine’s editor, wrote in a statement sent to POLITICO. “Our intention was not to incite or offend. If we had to do it over again we’d do it differently.”

  • It only drove our economy to the vestibule of out and outright collapse. NBD to a kook like Matt Yglesias. Yes, it’s the same Matt Yglesias who literally said on Twitter that he didn’t care if your kids were murdered in school.

    • pcmustgo

He’s doing the standard White Liberal “I’m so offended. I’m going to throw a tantrum in the hopes that minorities will someday give me brownie points so in the future when I get called a racist for something there might be a 20% chance they will stick up for me and my right to breath”.

      • pcmustgo

I’m so offended. Even though it’s painfully obvious less than 1% of my readership is Black. And reading and watching the news in general is a white thing.

    • josh

Yglesias is a YKW. He was mugged once by…THEM,but fortunately–yeah right heh heh fortunately– they didnt do much damage.

    • Robert Binion

This is the fallacy of quantitative easing. A central bank can flood the market for pink houses like this one with money, but it can not, being a mere institution, comprehend why the houses next door should remain so stubbornly vacant.

  • Jack Krak

If you don’t include blacks & browns in your adverstisements, illustrations and graphics that’s exclusionist and racist.
If you do include blacks & browns in your advertisements, illustrations and graphics that’s demeaning and racist.

  • Why aren’t white people protesting State Farm Insurance for all of those offensive commercials about bungling white people who need a genius magic negro to bail them out?

    • The__Bobster

I’m still ticked off at Verizon’s godlike Bantu in a bucket.

    • pcmustgo

      WE SHOULD BE….

      • liberalsuck

But the fact we don’t go out and protest and riot and sue is because we are Nordics. Thousands of living in the cold in Europe, our ancestors didn’t have time to get mad when someone said something offensive nor did we go out and look for fights. It was cold, we had limited resources, we had to spend our time finding resources, spend our time hunting, spend our time planning ahead, get ready for the winter, etc. The only time we Nordics would get violent is when someone threatened us or, especially, our families. For example, do you remember that scene on the movie The Patriot with Mel Gibson? Notice he didn’t get violent and take a stand until the Red Coats killed his kid and were walking his other son off to be hanged? That’s when he hunted them down with muskets and hacked up one Red Coat with a tomahawk. Whites are slow to anger, but strike hard when we absolutely fed up.

        • joesolargenius

I agree with your analogy of whites having to plan ahead to survive because of living in a cold environment , perhaps this explains why there are a lot less stupid people in our race .

        • Anon

The point you are talking about was passed nearly 5 decades ago. What you are saying about whites simply isn’t true….which is shameful considering how well armed we are. What is true is your average white person lives a slave existence, desperately trying not to offend anyone lest something bad happen to him. No matter how unreasonable the situation, few whites who aren’t overt outlaws will stand together….if there is even a smidgeon of authority. Literally, a hundred whites armed with military grade weapons will step aside meekly and let a non-white cop mercilessly beat a little old lady to death for no reason.

Until we ADMIT that problem exists, change is….unlikely. Living in a fantasy of pseudo-science and historical fiction about past glory isn’t helpful.

          • ye ol’ swampyankee

            Frustrating isn’t it?

Perhaps much has to do with impending retaliation by the white dominant power structures who’d crucify their own kind for just about anything. From law enforcement, the courts, the media etc. Hence, whites suffer from significant threat within their own ranks. This has resulted in a kind of intraracial paralysis. A pitiful affair indeed.

And your accurate about your other point. Those whites who don’t care or haven’t anything to lose (overt) i.e. prisoners, white biker gangs, certain ethnic gangs and the occasional tough- as- nails white guy who won’t take any crap.

But I’m not sure about your 100 armed whites example if you were serious. I’d think if it went that far the commitment would of been made.

      • Felix_M

        Agreed.

    • dd121

Cute blonde talking to the wise black man “Here’s my boyfriend, he’s from France”. Boyfriend (obviously not French) “bone jour”. The guy is fat, has buck teeth and is a dolt.
God I hate how whites are portrayed by those people at State Farm. BTW I canceled all of our insurance with State Farm that I had for 35 years and went elsewhere. I won’t do business at any business or corporation that portrays whites negatively. I know it isn’t much but that’s my active response.

      • 48224

Exactly, so glad I am not the only person to notice that. One of the whites in the commercial is an idiot and the other is an ugly liar.

      • Liberalsuck

I’ve noticed the ONLY ads with white people in it that make the white guy look smart are those PCMatic ads. It’s usually some clueless white female having computer problems and some white guy will say, “Try PCMatic.”

      • joesolargenius

The boycott is the best non violent means of protest for the masses , especially since attacking whites is the tool being used to get non whites to buy a particular product .

      • Tom Iron

Sir, do what you must, but the most important thing you can do is become a good marksman – one round, one hit.

      • saxonsun

That commercial really pisses me off.

    • 48224

My thoughts exactly. I am tired of seeing idiot whites being shown the way by a smarter “magical negro” type. My god, where will it all end?

    • StillModerated

About Allstate: they have the highest auto insurance rates because they cover large amounts of colored drivers. Other insurance companies can only discriminate by zip codes — and Section 8 housing is being used to even out the misery.

  • pcmustgo

I hate to say it, but that cover is pretty offensive… it shows Blacks and Latinos in a very stereotypical way, with the big lips and all. It makes them look like caricatures.

I guess Business Week is suffering from the same malaise as most publications- everything’s online now and all the Latino immigration means fewer Americans reading anything.

But yeah. I suppose they could have made this point without the cartoon.

    • pcmustgo

This style of illustration reminds me of Janis Joplin’s cover album and Crumb , that famous illustrator… He’s also run into trouble for “racist” depictions of blacks, despite being some kind of liberal.

      • Bill

Those “racist” depictions of blacks and browns were the NORM not long ago, and nobody batted an eye then. For some to find them offensive today illustrates just how brainwashed and PC we have become, even here. I DON’T find it offensive.

    • pcmustgo

I personally think they did this to do just that- incite, shock value, draw readers in.

    • josh

The latina in the upper right is prettys exy,I have to admit, lol.

    • robinbishop34

“I hate to say it, but that cover is pretty offensive… it shows Blacks
and Latinos in a very stereotypical way, with the big lips and all. It
      makes them look like caricatures.”

      Are you schizophrenic?

      • robinbishop34

I’m sorry for saying what I said… that was very unnecessary. I’ve been stricken with this awful flu and I can’t sleep. It’s made me so grouchy and irritable that I even snapped at my wonderful mom who has come over to help me as this miserable illness slowly fades away.

        • Thor Bonham

          Are you schizophrenic?

  • isn’t the definition of a “gaffe” is when someone accidently tells the truth?

    • The__Bobster

It is when politicians are involved.

  • The__Bobster

Wow! That IS offensive……and as you know, McMahon, I’m not easily offended….by minority stereotypes.

  • In the recent Financial Refrom Bill,, there is a section where banks lose any legal protections if they issue a mortgage that is classified as “sub-prime”, The intended effect is to have poor quality borrowers bundled into the banks prime mortgage portfolio. Now investors who buy mortgage backed securities will not know the actual credit quality of the bundled up mortgages unless they sift through each mortgage. It’s no secret that obama loved the CRA, and the democrats actually introduced a bill in 2009 to extend the CRA to cover credit unions and the like. The bill failed, but the dems managed to find a way to disguise CRA mortgages and buried it deep in the massive financial reform bill.

    • BellaCosa

Yeah this was absolutely outrageous. Essentially, banks can no longer price in the risk of nonperformance on a huge swath of their loans without opening themselves up to arbitrarily pernicious liability. The entire CFPB is a sham that merely subsidizes stupidity among consumers. Bravo, Congress, bravo.

  • josh

I am shocked that a mag owned by Bloomberg would print such a beautiful, truthful cartoon. My God! Theres more intellectual truth in that picture than in the entire Presidential race!!

  • Luca

They broke a Liberal Commandment of MSM: “Thou shalt never depict the blacks and browns in a negative way. Thou shalt show, at all times, that they are the smart, clever, hip, and saviors of the evil, ignorant, nerd-ish,racist Whites.”

    • Scott

Right…except those same liberals will move heaven and earth to keep their kids out of the black and brown schools.

  • Uh-Oh

The cover’s a huge mistake. Now that it’s in the national eye, any ethnic urban individual who identifies with the cartoon characters is going to get the message that there’s a huge shower of government money just waiting to be grabbed. They will look for ways to take illegitimate advantage of it, now that there’s already been a precedent.

  • MekongDelta69

Wouldn’t you just love to see an ‘apology’ worded the following way? – just one damn time:

“Our cover illustration last week got strong reactions, which we absolutely loved,” Josh Tyrangiel, the magazine’s editor, wrote in a statement sent to POLITICO. “Our intention was to tell the truth, and if that offends some low IQ idiots / leftists, and it incites them – good. If we had to do it over, we’d absolutely do it the same way again. ANY QUESTIONS?”

  • Lewis33

Looks like Bloomberg’s “friends” (and relatives) are taking a hit, and are not too pleased. No sympathy here…

  • ye ol’ swampyankee

That cartoon isn’t too far off from realism in many cases. “Jist gibs uz da money”! “Oh sheeeeets lordy, eyzzzz just found Obama’s: stash! “You go girl. . .”!

  • brengunn

Of course, they knew the reaction this would bring, they must have thought ‘f*ck it’, run it anyway, we’ll apologise later.

P.S. do swear words have to be starred to avoid moderation?

  • a multiracial individual

Can someone provide me a link to a recent (last ten years) ad in which a white person or persons is the “superior” and a minority is the “inferior?” I’m not sure if I have ever seen one. I expect to be waiting a while.

    • JDInSanDiego

I can’t think of one either but there’s a great website similar in stance to Amren called antiwhiltemedia.com that embeds commercials offensive to us, then the blogger picks them apart scene by scene and the readers pile on. It’s highly entertaining.

    • Jefferson

I have also noticed that commercials today feature way more Blacks than they did in the 1990s.

Commercial ads today where there is not a single Black face in sight is actually in the minority now. Most commercial ads today have to feature at least one Black face.

If I lived in a foreign country and I had never step foot in the U.S. And my only knowledge of this country was watching American television commercials, just by what I see I would think the U.S was at least 50 percent Black.

      • Thor Bonham

Hollywood movies too .. Can’t find any that doesn’t have a black cop or a black
CEO or black position of high level..

      • saxonsun

I watch and love Downton Abbey. It looks like the 4th season will fall prey to pc evil. I hear a black will be included.

  • thurlow

On the cover I recognize Shitavious, Le’Qui’she, T’Donnia and F’mor’que’tia from my old neighborhood. They are buying houses, that meth business must have really taken off.

    • Felix_M

Are those names from da ‘hood or new tropical diseases now finding their way to America’s shores?

      • Duke56

        There’s a difference?

  • Anone

I’m surprised (and a little disappointed) such an article is put up at face value without any real comment on its implications.

To be blunt (as usual), minorities don’t buy houses. Buying a house presupposes two things that are simply not true most of the time with minorities….1) they intend to actually live in the house and 2) they intend to pay for it. Hasn’t the US enough blighted neighborhoods and crackhouses left in the wake of the last big minority buying spree to openly say the obvious….that neither of these things is true?

What a non-white does is use low, low, looooooow standards for loans, often with no identity check, whatsoever, to “buy” a house, often with a loan over 100% of the value of the house with no collateral, VERY often under an assumed name. They take out what they can as cash and then disappear….leaving the house and bank and everyone else involved, in limbo. Rinse….repeat.

The last time this scam went on, non-whites milked the housing industry for between one and two TRILLION dollars..not billion….trillion. It is not a stretch to say that the entire economic problem in the US was caused by this theft. No…it’s not the only problem of its magnitude but by itself, it is the last straw in the collapse of our nation.

Why is this important? Because it is the last straw. Our economy simply won’t survive a repeat of the theft.

This has implications far beyond a few people getting houses they don’t deserve. Back, the first time this happened, nobody seriously considered such a thing could happen. Today….since it happened, what excuse do we have? It’s one thing to be robbed. Quite another to take all your belongings, including whatever clothes you happen to be wearing, put them in a pile, light them on fire and then jump in. We have no excuse…none. We’ve gone from being weak sheep to suicidal lunatics.

    • I’m surprised (and a little disappointed) such an article is put up at face value without any real comment on its implications.

That’s because I did The Great AmRen Mortgage Rant of 2011 once and only once. I’m not about to bore people with it again.

  • 1776is1984

This isn’t 1/1,000,000th as offensive as say Tim not-so Wise advocating White genocide or jamie foxx’s rants or even like those nauseous state farms commericals. please give me a break Libs!

  • Morris Thecat

    Artists usually aren’t color blind.

  • I’d leave the photo the way it is. Firsat, any number of cartoons show white people looking goofy. Apparently, blacks must be treated with reverence and solemnityofphots

  • are they wallowing in weed or cash?

  • LHathaway

It looks kinda offensive. Then again. aren’t they always being harassed about not have Enough people of color shown? Sounds like If it’s something positive, there must be images of color, it it’s something negative, color can’t be shown.

  • bigone4u

As an art critic wannabe, I would say the black cat symbolizes the bad luck that the white family next door will experience after the ghetto fambly moves in. The mountains of cash symbolize the loot stolen in home invasions, robberies, and burglaries by Juniorivious (upper left in the ghetto waders). The bug eyed dog, looking as if suffering from rabies, symbolizes the dog fighting ring that Dad runs. Teen daugher LaQuantisha (upper right) looks oh so sexy in her skin tight Beyonce slacks and top, with her long flowing Beyonce wig. She symbolizes rampant black sexuality. The adult female is noticeably lighter than the others, but fat lipped. She symbolizes the ugly black woman’s fruitless effort at beauty. The artist’s eye for color is revealed by the ghetto pink paint job on the house. I criticize the artist for omitting the Pontiac on concrete blocks in the driveway, which we know is a constant feature of ghetto life. Oh, and the bullet holes in the wall are also missing. Otherwise, fine job.

  • American Patriot

Again folks -The SOLUTION is for Whites to organise enterprises which employ and serve Whites ONLY. Kind of a Racially Realistic take on the libertarian ‘atlas shrugged’ of the shucking of the burden of the useless and ungrateful.

    • Bill

Won’t work. Not with a Federal government determined to undermine Whites in every way, backed by IRS, Federal Marshals, federalized national guards, ATF, HS, and FBI goons, and if need by the 82nd Airborne. As soon as you do that, some bantu will jump on it and bring it all down with law suits, and Federal intervention. The time to have stopped this all, and resisted the Federal government, was the FIRST time a black tried to block bust, and the Feds backed him. It’s too late now. Some brave patriots DID try, such as Gov Wallace, but everybody else stood by and watched them call out the Guard on him, and did nothing. There should have been nation wide support of him by all Governors and citizens across the country. I wonder how many of those alive then, in those positions, regret NOT doing so today?

  • Token Finn

Do the minorities in the picture look a bit goofy? Yes. Would have to see their previous editions (presumably with pics of white people) to determine if minorities really got the short stick or not. They may have published worse.

  • check out this VDARE.COM article about the Business Week cover:

    http://www.vdare.com/posts/volunteer-auxiliary-thought-police-are-out-again

There’s a comparison to the “offending” BW cover to artwork that was commissioned by HUD for George W Bush’s “Homeownership Society” madness back in 2002.

  • Whirlwinder

We are heading for another sub-prime financial bubble that will burst upon the financial world. We have not even begun to recover from the most recent debacle from the first sub-prime debacle. The financial world is hanging by a thread. If there are calls on the worthless sovereign European bonds the gig will be up and chaos will reign, thanks to our socialist/marxist in Congress and Obammy who is filling the world up with worthless American debt.
