Where Do “Obama Phones” Come From?

Charlie Spiering, Washington Examiner, September 27, 2012

The video of an Obama supporter bragging about having an “Obama phone” has gone viral on the web, but where do these “free cell phones” come from?

The program is called Lifeline, established in 1984, originally created to subsidize landline phone service for low income Americans, funded by government-collected telecommunication fees, paid by consumers.

In 2008, the program was expanded to support cell phones which quickly escalated the cost of the program. In 2008 the program cost $772 million, but by 2011 it cost $1.6 billion.

A 2011 audit found that 269,000 wireless Lifeline subscribers were receiving free phones and monthly service from two or more carriers. Several websites have been created to promote “free” government cell phones, including the” The Obama Cell Phone” website at Obamaphone.net.

Rep. Tim Griffin R-Ark. has proposed a bill to eliminate federal subsidies for free cell phones and has produced a great YouTube video highlighting the runaway cost of the program. {snip}

Where Do “Obama Phones” Come From?

    Obama’s stash.

    • The__Bobster

The 269,000 welfare mammies have a second free sail foam, which they use when the 250 free minutes run out on the first one.

      • Dan Reardon

Next to Whoopi Goldberg that has got to be the most repulsive thing I’ve ever seen on a video screen. These things cannot be fully human.

  • haroldcrews

And here I’ve been paying my mobile bill for the past thirteen years like a sucker.  Looks like I’ve been paying for someone else’s mobile too.

    • The__Bobster

The “poor” have things that I don’t even have. What does that make me?

  • America, the only country in the world where the poor get cell phones, food stamps, section 8 housing, farm loan reparations and everyone of them probably has a flat screen TV, Xbox, iPad, get their nails and hair done weekly and $180 Air Jordans. Meanwhile think how much better off the poor would be if we would only pay our fair share to give them a fair shot at the American Dream.

  • frank pucillo

How much crack can you get for an Obama phone.

  • Anan7

How about we throw away the income tax along with it?

or just repatriate out “brethren” back to Africa?  It would be a lot cheaper than keeping them here.

  • RHG

The “47%” Romney catches hell for, for having the audacity for bringing it up. Amazing how many “Section 8” type redistribution scams are out out there that we don’t know about. We pay for their rent, we pay for their food and now it looks like we pay so they can have cellphones and who says we aren’t paying “reparations”?

    • seattlesnow

it all sounds great until you see its happen to people that look, well just like you

      • Hey, welcome back.  We missed you, and especially the way you tie together mac-and-cheese, Wal-Mart, Ruby Ridge and Baltimore without the benefit of a period, as only you can.
BTW, I know this a bit belated by about a week, but happy birthday.  What I wouldn’t give to be 32 again.

    • Up to my neck in CA

And they use these free cell phones to plan and coordinate mob attacks on the very people who’s tax money pays for said phone. What a scam!

Btw, the page where that video is on You Tube (owned by Google – a very leftist organization) of Miss Left Side Of The Bell Curve spewing ebonics, deleted multi-thousands of comments (including mine) b/c they didn’t like the ‘tone’ of the discourse.

Almost all (if not all) of the Net giants (Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Amazon, Apple, Dell, ad infinitum) are leftist.

  • My Verizon bill just kept going up and up and I got tired of it.

    Here is what you do.
Go to a company like Virgin Mobile.  Enroll in a pay as you go plan but link it to a credit card so that it automatically renews (tops off)  your “minutes” monthly.  If you run out of minutes you “top-off” with a card from a drug store or similar place or just log in to your account and buy more minutes.

I went from a promotional $55 a month 1000 minutes + 250 texts, $86 a month total after taxes and fees, at Verizon with a free phone every two years to a (promotional) $35 a month plan plus paying $200 (got lucky, it was on sale at BestBuy when I changed) for a Samsung QWERTY smartphone with 1200 minutes  2.5gb data unlimited texts.

    $86 x 12 = $1032 a year with Verizon Two year cost $2064.
    $35 x 12 + $200 = $620 if I buy a new $200 phone every year. Two year cost (one phone) $1060. This plan is now $45 a month or $540 a year.

Virgin Mobile in Chicago is essentially Sprint re-branded and I have had very few issues.

    • pillowman

I’m currently using an iPhone 4  I picked up on Craigslist for $200 and I am paying $45 per month unlimited talk, text, and data on Straight Talk “pay as you go.” It’s a pretty good deal.

    • Boost mobile has a killer deal as well. It’s a prepay one, costing either 50 or 55 per month. Here is the kicker, and it’s a good one:  every 6 months they drop 5 off of your monthly fee,  if you pay on time. After 2 years with them you should be paying 30 or so. BTW, they use Sprint’s network.

  • Puggg

We’re not allowed to play the video of the Seiu paid troll.

    You guessed it.

  • Bad_Mr_Frosty

I want a welfare system run by former Soviets. You get what you need to live, nothing more.

  • Les H

If Obama’s reelected, will he up the number of minutes for his constituents?  Maybe unlimited talk…..

  • If Obama’s reelected, will he increase the number of minutes for free? How about adding the latest smartphones– iPhone 5, various Android phones….?

  • You will find these same “wealth redistribution” fees (aka black lifestyle maintenance fees) on your other utility bills too

  • haroldcrews

If you’re at a location where you have a wifi connection most of the time you can use the phone to connect to the internet over wifi and use a voip service for free.  Get the minimum number of minutes on your plan and just use them on the road.

  • Only problem is Mexicans tend to line up for any freebie. If you try to ID them they have phoney ID. Once out here in SOCal there was a big fire up in the mountains  and the Red Cross was handing out free food and other items for victims of the fire. The Mexicans line up with their hands out and either use the stuff or sell it at their yardsales. Maybe 2 % of those Mexicans actually lived in the fire area, they just heard about the freebies.

  • KD_Did

call me cynical, but I wonder if there are any VOTE Obama texts being sent to those phones.

  • Bon, From the Land of Babble

When asked how the President gave her a phone, she explained that all she had to do was sign up for it. ‘You sign up! If you on food stamps, you on social security, you got low income, you disability,’ she explained.

Obama is promising a cell phone in every pot!!

Poor used to mean not having a roof over your head or food to eat — NOW it means not having a cell phone, broadband service, a car and gas, a big screen TV…

Here are a few fun facts about 0bamaphones:

*12 million free government cell phones have been distributed to “needy” Americans since the program expanded to cell phones in 2008

*Illegal aliens can receive free government cell phones.  Citizenship is NOT a requirement to apply for this programs.

*In most states, you can get a free cell phone and up to 250 free cell phones minutes.  In Alaska you can get unlimited cell phone service for 1 dollar and residents of Oklahoma can get 10000 minutes for 1 dollar

*The FCC is considering expanding the Lifeline program to include subsidized broadband service.

And I, like a fool, have to pay my mortgage, electric and gas bill, water and sewer, car insurance, food, clothing, co-pay for health insurance, property taxes, federal and state taxes, sales tax (about 50% of what I earn), use taxes, gasoline taxes, car tax and cell phone taxes, and tuition at two UCs –which has gone up 75% in the past 5 years.

All so that a protected group of lazy, indolent slobs can have handed to them what I have to work for every single day.  As Rush Limbaugh said: Too many people are using the so-called ‘safety net’ as a hammock.

  • dhs

The program was initiated in 1984, and expanded in 2008. The Repubs  were in control of the fed gov at those times. The presidents were Regon and Bush II;  thy controlled to senate, and in 2008, they still controlled the house.  Let’s give discredit where discredit is due.

  • rightrightright

The woman in the film was very fat.  If she cut down on what she piles into her face, she would save enough to buy her own ‘phone.   There’s a thought.

  • frank pucillo

Going to Netflix I found an alternative to ATT uverse now I am going to find an alternative to ATT phone service. Any suggestions.

  • patriotdad76

If you tell people that blacks get free cell phones from the government, they look at you like you are a crazy racist.

  • I love this video clip.  Even though one needs to remember that this program was not started or expanded by Obama, this highlights the nature of the “47%” that Romney was talking about.  This woman probably couldn’t tell you a thing about foreign policy, or the economy.  She barely has control of her native tongue.  But she believes that Obama gave her a cell phone, so that (and his black skin) is enough to award him her vote.  And more of her ilk are being wantonly bred every day, while the mostly white group of taxpayers who subsidize their entire existince are probably having their 1.5 kids because that’s what they can responsibly afford.  The barbarians are inside the gates and their enablers are biding the time until they breed themselves into the majority.  Absent radical changes to voting requirements, we are finished.
