Hundreds of Undocumented Immigrants Protest Loss of Free Health Care in Spain

Before It’s News, September 2, 2012

Hundreds of people protested in downtown Madrid Saturday against a measure that will leave undocumented immigrants without access to free health care, saying the decision by Spain’s governing Popular Party amounts to “health apartheid.”

The demonstrators cried out against Saturday’s enactment of a measure that will strip the more than 150,000 illegal immigrants in Spain of their national health cards.

It was included in a government decree imposing urgent savings measures to safeguard the future of public health care amid a severe financial crisis and an unemployment rate of nearly 25 percent.

Some 30 organizations and civil society groups, immigrant and refugee associations and defenders of human rights, grouped as the Network for the Right to Have Rights, rallied in front of Madrid’s Gregorio Marañon Hospital.

Those taking part, many of them foreigners living in Spain, chanted slogans like “No human being is illegal” and “Popular Party, Ku Klux Klan,” while demanding the resignation of Health Minister Ana Mato.

The health minister annulled Saturday the health cards of all foreigners who pay no contributions to Spain’s Social Security and of Spaniards who have never worked and have incomes above 100,000 euros ($125,000) a year.

Foreigners without papers will only be eligible for urgent care in the case of accidents, serious illnesses, or pregnancy, birth and puerperium, except in the case of minors under age 18, who will received the same services as other Spaniards.

No official data exist about people living in Spain without a visa, though comparing the number of foreigners in the National Statistics Institute with those who do not figure in the registry of Spain’s Employment Ministry shows 569,946 people “without papers.”

Of these, some 153,469 are illegal immigrants from Latin America and other non-European Union countries, the hardest hit by this measure, since they belong to a vulnerable group with little money, while the rest are foreigners of irregular status from other EU countries.

At the same time, the regional governments of Catalonia, Galicia, the Basque region, Castilla y Leon, Navarra, Andalusia and Asturias have already announced that they will continue treating the undocumented.

Yeah, I see that policy changing in about two years, tops.

And here, we have the No Papers, No Fear criminals flaunting their favored status in our faces and nobody would dare arrest them, because that would be deemed racist.

    We’re doomed.  Beware and prepare.

    • refocus

       Beware and prepare.

      Prepare for what?

A life of beauty and grace … hand in hand with our fellow brothers and sisters?

A life of honor and truth … along side people just like us who now finally have a chance to show us a better way?

A life of justice and freedom … with those who like us now finally have it?

All made possible by the extirpation of white racism.

      Sing Halleluiah !

We are the camp of The Saints !

      • Church_of_Jed

We’ll renounce our Racism when blacks renounce the benefits of White medicine, science, technology, education, integration, the vote, civil rights, affirmative action, welfare, etc.

        • refocus

           Blacks?

          Just blacks?

What about the other people of color?

          Don’t they count?

Or are they not in the same universe ?

… and when you say white medicine, science and technology remember this: the whites did not do any of that, the government did, and did it all.

Comprende’ comrade ? or should I say Torvich?

Healthcare is universal in Spain.  This will not change.  It’s as likely to change as Americans giving up their guns.

    • Sounds like it’s already a done deal there, Sparky

    •  Universal for Spaniards.  And if it was possible to come up with a system that was universal for Americans, even if it meant handouts for Blacks, Americans would have supported it.  But demanding that people pay for hostile infiltrators is a bridge too far, even for people cowed by accusations of racism.

If you had read the article and your admin wasn’t so happy with the delete button, maybe you’d understand that the program makes sense and isn’t targeted at immigrants only.  It’s for people, Spaniards and non-Spaniards, who are truly fleecing the system.

    _____________

    Lol…. America style race-baiting.

  • fizmath

This is the biggest cause of immigration into Europe, namely the welfare benefits that allows people to raise a large family on low wages.

  • This won’t happen in America. When the Affordable Care Act kicks in, illegal immigrants are going to go to the head of the line because they’ll be defined as ‘at risk’ and ‘under served’.

  • JohnEngelman

What part of the word “illegal” don’t those immigrants understand?

    •  Si no le gusta ser llamado ilegal, no entrar en España ilegalmente.

      • If you do not like being called illegal, do not enter into Spain illegally.

  • “Foreigners without papers will only be eligible for urgent care in the case of accidents, serious illnesses, or pregnancy, birth and puerperium”

What the hell else would you go to the hospital for?

If you want to stay healthy, stay away from the hospital. I just saw a picture of the local nursing school graduates and well over 50% of them are clinically obese. If they can’t take care of themselves, how well are they going to take care of others?

  • In the Spain system, when you are injured you are sent home with your health care benefits and you salary, it pays to get hurt. I know, I live there, the system is huge obama like vacation scam until you have serious health problems, find a private doctor and pay , if not you will probably die.

    • GravitonX

      Nonsense.

  •  “No human being is illegal” and “Popular Party, Ku Klux Klan,”

Would it be too much trouble for Spanish anti-whites to come up with their own slogans?

    • The__Bobster

Why should they? The same group controls all of these people and they know what works.

  • KenelmDigby

Now you know the real reason why Spain is bankrupt – and threatens to bankrupt and bring down the entire EU with it (except that the German political class seems intent on wasting hard earned German cash in bailing out feckless, brainless, corrupt foreigners).
Just how can any government, I repeat any national government of a sovereign civilly administered state, be so dumb as to pay for the ‘free’ medical treatment (in reality, of course, it is anything but free but costs taxpayers, German taxpayers as it happens!, fortunes), of non-citizens who have never contributed a penny to the central health fund, and what’s more are there illegally to boot!
     – One silver lining of the economic meltdown is that this madness has been exposed for the bullpoopy that it is. When money apparently ‘flowed freely’ into Spain soft-brained, soft hearted leftties could play their silly little ‘humanitarian’ games and make a big show to the world of what ‘good’ people they were.
    They really were pathetic.

    • GravitonX

German nonsense.  Germany, i.e. Deutsche Bank, was bailed out by Obama but fails to mention that part.  Instead it sits with it’s holier-than-thou attitude over southern Europe with a financial mess of it’s own creation.

You want to know why Spain needed the bailout?  Because tens of thousands of “snow birds” from Germany and elsewhere bought 2nd and 3rd homes throughout Spain but mainly on the coast.  When the credit crisis hit, the first thing they did was abandon their homes leaving the local governments with a huge loss of expected tax income.  But, also, not only did they screw us, they screwed their own banks who gave them the loans.  So, when Germany is talking about bailing us out, they are really talking about bailing themselves out via-vis us and laying the blame on us which is typical of the arrogant ……

But his doesn’t fit into your narrow Anglo propaganda, now does it?

      • refocus

Uhh… in case you do not know it… the German Central Bank is owned by the same guys who own the USA Central Bank, in its entirety… and all of the present losses are due to the derivatives.   The entire housing market could be bought with one minutes interest on the derivative scam.

Like everyone else, the Germans were completely defeated.  At least they have the satisfaction of knowing that they fought.

  • Natassia

    Go home.

  • When they protest, round them up and send them home since they dislike so much being here !

  • GravitonX

Ironic how you mention this.  This summer I returned home to a suburb of Madrid, over 200,000+ people.  I was surprised to see how many African immigrants had come.  I’m worried that we might repeat the same mistakes in the US.  But, apparently it’s not a problem.  My brother who is a police officer told my that last year there were ZERO blood crimes.  Try to say the same for anywhere in the States.  Not likely.
