Kenya Clashes Kill Dozens in Coast Province

BBC News, August 22, 2012

At least 52 people have been killed in ethnic clashes in south-eastern Kenya, police say.

The clashes in Tana River district, Coast Province, took place late on Tuesday between the Orma and Pokomo groups, the region’s police chief said.

Most of the dead were women and children, many of whom were hacked to death with machetes, he said.

The clash is the worst single incident since violence rocked the country after disputed polls four years ago.

Regional deputy police chief Joseph Kitur told AFP news agency that those killed were either hacked to death or burned alive when their huts were set alight.

Mr Kitur said 48 people were killed on the spot, while four more died of their wounds later.

However, the Red Cross said it had counted 59 dead bodies, according to the Reuters news agency, suggesting the death toll could be higher still.

The attack is believed to have escalated from a dispute over grazing rights for cattle.

The victims included 31 women, 11 children and six men, Mr Kitur said. It is unclear whether any of the perpetrators have been arrested.

‘Revenge attack’

Mr Kitur said that, according to investigations, the attack had been carried out by the Pokomo on the Orma.

Danson Mungatana, the lawmaker for the area, said the killings were the latest in a string of attacks and cattle raids and had been taken in retaliation for a previous incident.

“There have been problems simmering for a while,” he told AFP.

The BBC’s Frenny Jowi in the capital, Nairobi, says violence between the two communities is often reported, but not on such a huge scale.

Our reporter says there is long-standing enmity between the communities, who get caught up in a cycle of revenge killings over the theft of cattle and grazing and water rights.

In 2001, a series of clashes between the Orma and Pokomo left at least 130 dead in the same region.

The semi-arid region is one of the poorest in Kenya, with very little infrastructure or industry.

The government recently created a ministry to promote development in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid areas, but there has been little improvement in peoples’ lives, our reporter adds.

The violence comes as Kenya prepares for elections early next year. More than a 1,200 people were killed and 600,000 displaced in the months following the last election in 2007.

  • Rocky Bass,

Violence? No, not in our presidents homeland, say it isn’t so.

Look for more “refugee” Kenyans to be resettled in your neighborhood.

The fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree. The fruit being our home bred Africans (although from a different Geographic region of Africa) and the tree being Africa itself, all of it below the Sahara. Doin’ what they do best with edged weapons and/ or firearms against women and children.  What no raping? Maybe that’s in the “Original Article” . I haven’t read it yet. Any refugees shouldn’t be coming here. That’s the UKs problem. Sent them to the Nefud Desert in Saudi Arabia.

I know it sounds redundant, but these killings in Kenya demonstrate, once again, the savage nature of the Black man. Such murderous rampages are not uncommon wherever Blacks reside, and they are only somewhat tempered when Whites secure or police the community.

These people are unable to live peaceably with others – and even among themselves! And while other racial groups have had, at times, their killings and genocidal incidents, they are relatively few. Yet, among Blacks, it’s quite frequent. We cannot simply blame poverty or lack of education on such atrocities (although they may contribute) because many races or ethnicities live in poverty, yet they are able to live in relative harmony with each other. Such incidents as reported by the BBC occurs because Blacks are, by nature, violent, deeply angry, impulsive and poor at being able to consider the consequences of their actions. It’s not merely Kenya and South Africa that proves this, consider any urban city in America which has a high population of Blacks.

Racist. RAAAACISSSTTTT! HOW DARE YOU! Blacks are the same as white people. Exactly the same except for skin color.

      • Rocky Bass,

You are absolutely correct! There is no difference between blacks and whites besides skin tone, uhm well and propensity to violence, criminality, lower average intelligence and higher sexual promiscuity, but these teenie weenie tiny little differences should not matter. We should all pray that we one day have the pleasure of being in the minority when these folks grace us with the wondrous happy and fulfilling experience, that before existed only in the Congo.

Liberals take note – two ethnic groups that you would never be able to tell apart hate each other enough to use machetes to settle the issue.

Now, please, continue telling us about how Western countries need to import large numbers of every race, creed, religion and ideology before we can consider ourselves to be successful societies….

The people responsible for the importation of these savages know full well what the results will be.

      Act accordingly.

The myth of the peace-loving “noble savage” is persistent and pernicious. Indeed, for the last fifty years, most popular and scholarly works have agreed that prehistoric warfare was rare, harmless, unimportant, and, like smallpox, a disease of civilized societies alone. Prehistoric warfare, according to this view, was little more than a ritualized game, where casualties were limited and the effects of aggression relatively mild. Lawrence Keeley’s groundbreaking War Before Civilization offers a devastating rebuttal to such comfortable myths and debunks the notion that warfare was introduced to primitive societies through contact with civilization (an idea he denounces as “the pacification of the past”).

Building on much fascinating archeological and historical research and offering an astute comparison of warfare in civilized and prehistoric societies, from modern European states to the Plains Indians of North America, War Before Civilization convincingly demonstrates that prehistoric warfare was in fact more deadly, more frequent, and more ruthless than modern war. To support this point, Keeley provides a wide-ranging look at warfare and brutality in the prehistoric world. He reveals, for instance, that prehistorical tactics favoring raids and ambushes, as opposed to formal battles, often yielded a high death-rate; that adult males falling into the hands of their enemies were almost universally killed; and that surprise raids seldom spared even women and children. Keeley cites evidence of ancient massacres in many areas of the world, including the discovery in South Dakota of a prehistoric mass grave containing the remains of over 500 scalped and mutilated men, women, and children (a slaughter that took place a century and a half before the arrival of Columbus). In addition, Keeley surveys the prevalence of looting, destruction, and trophy-taking in all kinds of warfare and again finds little moral distinction between ancient warriors and civilized armies. Finally, and perhaps most controversially, he examines the evidence of cannibalism among some preliterate peoples.

Keeley is a seasoned writer and his book is packed with vivid, eye-opening details (for instance, that the homicide rate of prehistoric Illinois villagers may have exceeded that of the modern United States by some 70 times). But he also goes beyond grisly facts to address the larger moral and philosophical issues raised by his work. What are the causes of war? Are human beings inherently violent? How can we ensure peace in our own time? Challenging some of our most dearly held beliefs, Keeley’s conclusions are bound to stir controversy.
Among males the paleolithic era selected for the desire and the ability to kill other humans.
In civilized nations the more aggressive males are gradually culled by the criminal justice systems. This is why populations that are closer in number of generations to a paleolithic way of life nearly always have higher murder rates than countries where Caucasians or Orientals in the clear majority.

Um, Kenya, South Africa, Detroit, El Paso, and other majority black or majority brown areas are backwards and poor because orf liberalism.  Yeah, that’s it.  That’s the only reason.
