Tea Parties Issue Demands to Tennessee Legislators

Members of Tennessee tea parties presented state legislators with five priorities for action Wednesday, including “rejecting” the federal health reform act, establishing an elected “chief litigator” for the state and “educating students the truth about America.”

About two dozen tea party activists held a news conference, then met with lawmakers individually to present their list of priorities and “demands” for the 2011 legislative session that opened Tuesday.

Regarding education, the material they distributed said, “Neglect and outright ill will have distorted the teaching of the history and character of the United States. We seek to compel the teaching of students in Tennessee the truth regarding the history of our nation and the nature of its government.”


The material calls for lawmakers to amend state laws governing school curriculums, and for textbook selection criteria to say that “No portrayal of minority experience in the history which actually occurred shall obscure the experience or contributions of the Founding Fathers, or the majority of citizens, including those who reached positions of leadership.”

Fayette County attorney Hal Rounds, the group’s lead spokesman during the news conference, said the group wants to address “an awful lot of made-up criticism about, for instance, the founders intruding on the Indians or having slaves or being hypocrites in one way or another.

“The thing we need to focus on about the founders is that, given the social structure of their time, they were revolutionaries who brought liberty into a world where it hadn’t existed, to everybody—not all equally instantly—and it was their progress that we need to look at,” said Rounds, whose website identifies him as a Vietnam War veteran of the Air Force and FedEx retiree who became a lawyer in 1995.

  • Wow, this is a lot more racial courage than the typical tea party organization.  It’s not the hard line I would advocate, but I’ll take it.

    I recall seeing a special report a while back on Fox news about the content of a History book being used in the classroom to teach our children. One History expert said he had never seen such anti-White, White bashing, pure hatred of Europeans all in one book.  Since that report, I’ve taken to looking through my kids Social Studies and History books, ready to counter any misinformation or out right lies, but have found them to be surprisingly fair and balanced, thank goodness. But we do live in a very rural area so it might just be that the PC madness hasn’t run amok here. Yet.

    Unfortunately. I think they will find that TN’s educators are too busy trying to solve the “achievement gap” and the riddle behind why so many more black kids are disciplined, suspended etc. than whites.

    I’m sure if we lived in a more “progressive” area, many a teacher would have my ire up as well. I stay very involved in what my children are being taught because let’s face it: That’s where our children usually get the largest dose of White guilt unless they have liberal parents, and I’m just not having it. I feel I have to stay on my toes, particularly from living in the South where we tend to get beat over the head more than most with charges of racism and other such nonsense.

    Yeah, no kidding!!

    Public schools and the textbooks they use no longer comport American values such as patriotism and honesty or aide the assimilation of the children of immigrants through American laws, customs and language.

    Today, the most widely used history textbook in U.S. public schools is A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn.

    The influence of avowed Marxist, Howard Zinn (“I stand to the left of Mao”), on textbooks and throughout the curricula in American schools cannot be underestimated.   His redistributionist, multicultural views and notions of “social justice” have deeply permeated the social studies, history, literature and even math curriculas of K-12 schools and political science and economic departments of colleges and universities.  

     Entire schools in my district, the LAUSD, have overtly turned themselves into “schools of social justice”, the curriculum revolving around Zinn’s premise that the United States is a predatory, sexist, racist and oppressive nation that benefits the rich at the expense of the poor. Considering that two of Zinn’s heroes are Mao and Castro, you can imagine the transformation will be in the direction of an authoritarian police state.

    This is from the first few pages of the mandated US History text that I have sitting on my desk:

    From Page 1, The Earliest Americans: An American Story:

    In 1925 an African American cowboy named George McJunkin was riding along a gully near Folsom, New Mexico when he noticed something in the dirt. He found a bone and a flint arrowhead.

    On the Declaration of Independence: An American Story:

    In 1781, an enslaved Massachusetts man named Quock Walker took an extrodinary step: He took legal action against his slaveholder who had assaulted him.

    Also from the textbook:

    Women and African Americans continued to be denied political rights… African Americans still faced discrimination….No group in American colonies endured lower status or more hardship than enslaved Africans…they were subjected to beatings and brandings by planters.

    Contrast that with a 7th grade “basal reader” from the 40s entitled Readings in Literature:

    The next selection is a Hymn.  I cannot imagine any of those selections included in a modern school textbook.

    Now, I’d better put away the old, forbidden textbook before the school komissars find it in my possession.  I wouldn’t want to suffer the consequences which I imagine could be severe — the teachers’ union certainly wouldn’t come to my defense!! 

    How soon before we’re going to have to start memorizing the old texts that reflect our values and heritage before they’re ordered burned by the overlords of the NWO??
