Group: Minority CPS Students Were Flunked Unfairly

A parents group says thousands of Chicago Public School students have been unfairly flunked.

Parents United for Responsible Education or PURE has filed a complaint with the U.S. Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights. They say the policy of flunking 3rd, 6th and 8th grade students based on standardized test scores has disproportionately harmed Black and Latino students.

“No school system should carry on policies that have been proven to increase and even speed up the student dropout rate. Especially at a time when the nation has committed itself to addressing this crisis,” said

CPS says it would be a disservice to promote a student who was not academically prepared.
