Gang Brawl Breaks out at SE Side High School

William Lee, Daily Southtown (Chicago), Jan. 12

Ten teenagers at a Southeast Side high school were involved in an interracial gang brawl Tuesday that resulted in a stun gun being used on a student after he attacked a teacher who prevented his escape from police, officials said.

One of the 16-year-olds was subdued with a Tazer by a Chicago police sergeant after he attacked a 45-year-old female teacher who blocked his escape, Herrera said. Police repeatedly demanded the student stop attacking the teacher and was Tazed when he would not, Herrera added.

The second 16-year-old was charged for fighting with another teacher and two security guards.

Some at the school said brawl highlighted two ongoing battles at the school — the mounting racial tensions between black and Latino gangs, and tensions between teachers and school administrators over safety.

“Violence has escalated to the point where safety is a special issue for teachers (here),” Garnett said.
