Liberals Seek Health-Care Access for Illegals

More news stories on Immigration

Stephen Dinan, Washington Times, Sept. 28, 2009

Fearful that they’re losing ground on immigration and health care, a group of House Democrats is pushing back and arguing that any health care bill should extend to all legal immigrants and allow illegal immigrants some access.

The Democrats, trying to stiffen their party’s spines on the contentious issue, say it’s unfair to bar illegal immigrants from paying their own way in a government-sponsored exchange. Legal immigrants, they say, regardless of how long they’ve been in the United States, should be able to get government-subsidized health care if they meet the other eligibility requirements.

“Legal permanent residents should be able to purchase their plans, and they should also be eligible for subsidies if they need it. Undocumented, if they can afford it, should be able to buy their own private plans. It keeps them out of the emergency room,” said Rep. Michael M. Honda, California Democrat and chairman of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.

Mr. Honda and his allies, though, say illegal immigrants should be allowed to pay for insurance if they can afford it, even if it comes through a government-established exchange. As a generally young, healthy part of the population, illegal immigrants could help reduce overall costs for those who buy into health exchange plans, the lawmakers said.

The Democrats’ letters, however, do not issue ultimatums or threaten to withhold support for the bills if their requests aren’t met.

The National Council of La Raza launched its own “flood their voice mail” campaign last week to put pressure on Mr. Baucus to expand coverage in his proposal to include all legal immigrants and to drop verification language in the legislation that would prevent illegal immigrants from obtaining coverage.

Rep. Steve King, Iowa Republican, said proposals that include government coverage for illegal immigrants leave him incredulous.

“If anybody can, with a straight face, advocate that we should provide health insurance for people who broke into our country, broke our law and for the most part are criminals, I don’t know where they ever would draw the line,” he said.

Mr. King, who opposes Democrats’ health care plans in general, said illegal immigrant access in legislation “would be a poison pill that would cause health care to go down” to defeat.

Under the 1996 welfare law overhaul, Congress restricted most federal benefits to longtime holders of green cards—those who have been in the country at least five years.

But Democrats chipped away at that rule when they reauthorized the State Children’s Health Insurance Program earlier this year and allowed states to cover all immigrant children and pregnant women, regardless of how long they’ve been in the country.

Notice that Honda is the chairman of the Asian Pacific Islander caucus. I suppose he thinks that “undocumented” Asians will be able to buy health insurance.

It’s all moot, because up next is “comprehensive immigration reform.” The problem of illegal aliens getting HC will be solved, because there will be no more illegal aliens. Read the stitches on the fastball.

They say it will keep them “out of the emergency rooms”.

Well i’ll go along with that. Let them put their money where their mouth is and agree that the illegals may purchase govt healthcare plans.

And in return they will agree that any illegal that shows up in the ER without such a plan will be arrested for theft of services. In the ER that is going to be a felony amount. After sentencing they’ll be immediately deported without appeal.

Would they agree to that compromise?

Tell me why I should trust this Government? Our Country is broke so we should send our “guests” home, they’ve worn out their welcome. We the taxpayer have watched our schools turn into a tower of babel that we get to pay for. Our hospitals have closed due to the “free” care given to those with no right to be here. Tell me why we have to fight for “our right” to choose who enters and stays in our Country? Tell me why the EEOC and Census have two catagories Hispanic/Nonhispanic? Tell me why our leaders would have language in a bill that would force us to pay for linguists? Tell me how long it would take for our Empathetic Supreme Court to rule that it is unconstitutional to NOT insure illegals? [Bet they are working on the law as we speak} My worry is for the unemployed citizens that the Government is forgetting!

The argument seems to be that illness knows no borders or immigration status.

We’re the policemen to the world. Why not be the world hospital as well?

We cannot continue to pay for all these people leaching off the system. The working people of this country should not have to sacrafice for people who don’t belong here. This cannot go on, the well is running dry! And anything a politician says is a LIE.

Fellow citizens some of us major in madness, perhaps madness squared!
They come illegally and we say ‘poor Jose just wants a better life’.
They stay illegally and we arrange a job, cash basis if no paperwork.
They stay illegally, and buy counterfeit documents for a better job.
They stay illegally, make babies and we make the babies citizens.
They stay illegally, put their citizen babies on welfare to lower expenses.
They stay illegally, use fraudulent documents for bank accounts.
They stay illegally, use fraudulent documents for driver’s license.
They stay illegally, use fraudulent documents to buy a home, perhaps subsidized.
They stay illegally, send school age children to free public schools.
They stay illegally, and wonder why they shouldn’t vote on community matters.
They stay illegally, and do Lord-only-knows what else that should be reserved for citizens only!
They stay illegally, and now we provide them health insurance, also subsidized.
One day some authority wakes up and says ‘say Jose I have discovered you are here illegally and you will have to go home now’. Little wonder that Jose objects to being sent home after being welcomed to all these opportunities. Madness!!!!

Opening up American facilities to illegals is like saying “come on over folks”. It’s an invitation to migrate in even greater numbers. Health care, education, all the other benefits will be bestowed on them as soon as the healthcare furore dies down & you suckers will be paying for it.

Stand up & stop the socialists now or you will surely regret it for the rest of your lives.

If they get their way and the Republicans get back in power I bet they will not revers a thing. They are almost as bad. You need to send some pretty clear messages to all your politicians.

Did Rep. Honda stop to think that even if the lawbreakers are allowed to “buy” health insurance, they would then add to the crowded waiting rooms that doctor’s offices will become? If Obamacare goes through, we’ll have waiting times for maybe months like the socialized medicine nations of Canada and Great Britian. With a few million illegals thrown in, you can triple the waiting time to see a doctor. But, let’s not worry. Many doctors will leave the profession anyway rather than submit to a pencil pusher telling them how to treat their patients. So no one will get adequete care. Thanks, Rep. Honda.

“If they pay the premiums… ” that’s too funny! Illegals are the worst parasites on earth. So expecting them to “pay the premium”, that’s got to be an oxymoron.

I have a better idea Mr. Honda. How about a plan that keeps them out of the U.S. instead of out of the emergency room.

12 — June wrote at 1:53 PM on September 29:

Why should illegals “pay” for health care, when they can go to any emergency room and get it free? We can stop all this by voting in those who care about legal, taxpaying citizens rather than foreign freeloaders.

13 — Cat Patrol wrote at 9:57 PM on September 29:

Illegals can already buy their own private insurance, and guess what? They almost never do!

And a government run insurance policy will almost certainly be subsidized by general tax revenues, so illegals or anyone else buying into it will be getting a discount rate at the expense of others.

14 — feller wrote at 4:18 AM on September 30:

Yeah, let the illegals purchase health insurance. like they would ever spring for a penny to pay for services. assuming they do, arrest them the minute they or their brats enter the waiting room, sick or not. with air travel they can be in mexico or el salvador within 24 hrs to enjoy the fine medical care these progressive nations run by nonwhites provide.

The nature of Universal health insurance is those of lesser means will be subsidized by those will greater means. Illegals will by far be the recipients of that wealth transfer. Are there no disadvantages to being illegal?
