Jamie Satterfield, Knoxville News Sentinel, August 27, 2009
When members of the panel of Davidson County residents walked into a Knox County jury room Wednesday, they sat down before the proverbial scale of justice.
On one side, the jurors told Judge Richard Baumgartner, they piled on the legal reasons to take Letalvis Cobbins’ life: the heinous nature of the killings, the motive to rid himself and his alleged cohorts of a witness, and the many crimes that preceded the deaths of Channon Christian and Chris Newsom.
On the other, they explained, they stacked the legal reasons to spare his life: a horrific childhood, the pleas of his relatives and his alleged role as subordinate to an evil mastermind.
Three hours later, the panel’s members walked into Knox County Criminal Court and announced the results. The scales, they said, tipped in favor of sparing Cobbins lethal injection and allowing him instead to spend the rest of his life in prison.
“The aggravating factors do not outweigh the mitigating circumstances,” the jury foreman declared.
The jury of four black women, two black men, one Asian man, three white men and two white women then headed off to a hotel, where they’ve been sequestered for more than a week, to ready for a return trip to Nashville. They left in their wake a relieved Cobbins and angry Christian and Newsom relatives.
{snip}
Jurors next heard from a trio of Cobbins’ sisters and his cousins. All of them described his upbringing as chaotic. Although he had love and normalcy while being reared by a great aunt, she died when Cobbins was 13, they said. He wound up homeless and bounced between a drug-addicted mother and alcoholic father, they told jurors.
“I love my brother,” Misha Davidson told jurors. “He’s not a killer. It’s not in my brother to kill anybody. I’m so sorry to the families. Everybody looks at me and hates me for what happened. I know you hate his guts. But he’s my brother.”

““I love my brother,” Misha Davidson told jurors.”
If she loves him so much why had she not seen him for 7 years although they lived within 20 miles of each other?
Excusing vicious torture rape murders because of their unhappy childhood is the fault of Sigmund Freud (Dr. Fraud) and the entire psychiatrist psychology profession who have enabled countless murders like this to be found either innocent or released early because of psychiatric testimony.
Not too surprising that they let im off with life, instead of execution, which is what he should have gotten. With half the jury being black, I would guess they browbeat the six non-blacks into going along with the life route instead of the lethal injection.
What dumbfounds me is that, in writing this news story, the reporter did not bother to get one word of comment on the verdict from the families of the two young victims. Not one. Satterfield writes that the verdict produced “anger” on the part of the victims’ families, but did not follow up on that at all. Simply quoting what they said on the stand about their kids doesn’t cut it. What was their reaction after the sickening sentence was announced?
And if this Davidson was really the one behind the two murders, and Cobbins just a “pawn,” then that should be a good argument for an automatic death sentence if he is convicted in his trial. Anyone want to bet that instead he’ll get life, also?
I disagree. I don’t think the awful childhood got the sympathy this article portrays. Maybe with the black portion but the whites and asian were plain old spineless.
So since roughly 75% of all black males fit that profile, why bother with having a trial?
This is a case where the White jurors were probably either afraid of appearing racist with the 6 Black jurors deciding with them and/or they just couldn’t argue effectively simply because again they were just too afraid - in front of the Black jurors - to attempt to get the death penalty because Whites unfortunately become very closed-mouthed in the presence of Blacks no matter what the intellectual and educational level is of the Whites.
I had worried that the half black jury wouldn’t vote to convict. Turns out my fears were misplaced, but they came through in a big way in this one (sarcasm).
Just what is it about a “horrific childhood” that allows you to get out of the death penalty if you rape, torture and kill two people?
I was pretty sure they wouldn’t give him the death penalty. The folks went out of their way to ensure the deck was stacked to make even a prosecution hard.
As far as the black man having a difficult childhood, don’t most of them? Many don’t even know who their father’s are. Many don’t care.
I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that the whites on the jury voted for the life sentence so as not to offend the black jurors. However, that’s complete supposition on my part.
Anger.
It’s not nice, is it? Both religion and liberalism tell us that.
But that is what happens when abominations occur. My profound sympathies are with the White families.
It takes character to hate. “Love” is easy, because it is the coward’s way out. it is a way of avoiding taking a stand, of standing on principle. It is just so easy to give up, shrink into the background, and say that you did it out of love, or Christian mercy, or whatever, and declare yourself to be some sort of superior righteous being (where other people’s children are involved).
I don’t know where the jury was coming from, but they should have loved Channon and Christopher, and hated the criminal. Yes, yes, I know, he said to love your enemies. Perhaps that is part of the problem, or even the source of it.
Love is not the fulfilling of the law—-hate is.
Hatred of the evil that keeps multiplying, and will harm us all.
I am just so damn mad and frustrated.
He’s not a killer but he killed; he can be forgiven for his upbringing but can’t be condemned for ending lives who had nothing whatsover to do with his upbringing.
The leniency is of course absurd but expected.
And the message sent is: kill in a horrible manner and you will be treated in an understanding manner.
With 6 blacks on the jury and what probably amounts to whites who wanted to show how kind they were did anybody expect this thug to get the death penalty? I know there are those who say that life in prison is worse than death, but not to an imbecillic black, who can be entertained by shadows flitting across the wall.
And speaking of black thugs, Glenn Beck came right out on his show this evening, saying he thinks the “civilian army” Obama is raising, that will be funded and as strong as the US military, (In Obama’s own words.) is going to amount to black thugs like the Black Panthers who were carrying a stick at a polling place, telling white voters they were there to assure that a black man gets elected. Obviously he’s right, because they refused to charge them with intimidation or to even pursue civil charges. They have shown us they have no intention of prosecuting their own “defense corps.”
Other thugs, mostly black, would be Acorn and the SEIU union.
Beck laid out a VERY convincing argument, and there’s no doubt in my mind he’s right. He had on plenty of high profile people to back up his opinion also.
And why is this army being raised? According to Beck, to fight the same people who they have been demonizing as right wing extremists: The tea party crowd, those who believe in traditional American values, the type of citizens at town hall meetings, the type of people now organizing in self defense. In other words, all of us who don’t have our minds “right.”
The black professor, Carol Swain, who wrote recently that Obama has made race relations worse not better, and added she fears serious racial conflict, and Jon Voight, who asked if Obama is going to start a civil war, are both right, in my opinion.
In my estimation we’re in the most dangerous period in our history, because we’re on the brink of breakup right now. Now, more than ever, I would advise people to prepare for hard times, and their own defense and sustenance.
Well, the racial makeup of that jury sure did guarantee they would take “his horrific childhood” into account now didn’t it? What about the victims who will never get to finish out their lives and have children of their own? That wasn’t horrific enough for the jury?
When criminals enter into a criminal enterprise they are all guilty of all crimes committed. A liquor store robbery by two men is a good example, one man is the driver and the other goes into the store and robs and kills the clerk. This is a felony murder and both are guilty of 1st degree murder.
Here is what happened in the Knoxville case:
According to the testimony of the Knox County Acting Medical Examiner Dr. Darinka Mileusnic-Polchan at the subsequent trial of Eric Boyd, Newsom was repeatedly raped and then blindfolded, gagged, arms and feet bound and his head covered. Barefoot, he was either led or dragged outside the house to a set of nearby railroad tracks. He was shot in the back of the head, the neck, and the back, and his body then set on fire. Christian’s death would come only after hours of sexual torture, medical examiner Mileusnic-Polchan testified. Christian suffered horrific injuries to her vagina, anus and mouth. She was not only raped but savaged with “an object,” possibly a broken chair leg, the doctor testified. She was beaten in the head. Some type of chemical was poured down her throat, and her body, including her bleeding and battered genital area, likely scrubbed with the same solution - all while Christian was alive, the forensic expert said. She was then “hog-tied,” with curtains and strips of bedding, her face covered tightly with a small trash bag and her body stashed inside five large trash bags before being placed inside a large trash can and covered with sheets. Christian died slowly, suffocating, the medical examiner said.
Cobbins was involved from the beginning to the end and the jury’s verdict is unbeliveable. At the penalty phase the members of the jury were given relatively easy choices. Did the proven facts of the crimes outweigh the fact that Cobbins had a bad childhood. The jury obviously found that the childhood was more important.
From what I understand, he had at one point during the crime, an opportunity to release her, but chose not to. That says a lot.
During his testimony, which he insisted on giving against his attorneys’ advice, he admitted that he told the ringleader that he wouldn’t tell anyone.
If you are even with a group of people who kill someone, you get the same punishment as the killer, even if you didn’t actually kill the person. Cobbins deserved death.
By age 13, Letalvis Cobbins should have had a moral conscience. Neither chaos nor addiction, his own or his parents’, could have created the monster he became. This outcome was ordained by his genes. His dismal parents main role was as vector for this.
Well, if it was the fault of his unhappy childhood, logic would dictate that he be hanged along with all those who contributed to his twisted development.
If the death penality was ever made for anyone it would be people like Cobbins. The excuse for Cobbins crime is pure liberal progressive psycho babble. There have been people who grew up in circumstances far worse than his and they didn’t find it neccessary to do this to another human being. Here I have to say, that I’ve always admired the Mafia’s way of justice. Imagine for example, what would happen if the victims were the children of a Mafia boss. There would be no taking chances with the possibility of stupid jurors and judges.
I would go after the perps families and eliminate them. This would take months and even years but it could be done. A cancer has to be removed completely if it is not to recur—this sub-human garbage MUST be eliminated. This includes “parents”, “siblings” and ANY OTHER RELATIVES.
And…as I’ve posted on other articles, how much longer? How much will it take for white people to wake up and realize there is no appeasement with blacks?
i agree with no. 15 p.b.l. blacks’ genes play an important role in their propensity to violence. this combined with a much lower overal average i.q. is a dangerous combination.
as far as the racial makeup of the jury, haven’t we learned from the first o.j. trial…that stacking the jury with blacks by the defense is the key to some sort of victory. play the race card like johnnie cochran on top of that and you have a certain winner.
if these jerks had possessed o.j.’s money, it’s possible they could have gotten an overwhelmingly black female jury and an aquittal as a result. after all, these thugs were obviously ”framed” by the police like o.j. was.
To 2 — Wayne Engle:
The reporter wrote a separate article about the reactions of the victims’ parents:
http://tinyurl.com/m3rjt7
In Knoxville there’s a huge amount of sympathy for the parents, and identification with them by other parents with children. Posts to the various articles in the Sentinel were overwhelmingly in favor of the death penalty for Cobbins, and the posts now are angry and disappointed that it wasn’t applied. There are some dissenters, of course.
The Sentinel’s archive of stories on the case is at:

To 13 — Jake:
Good summary of the crime.
Also, the medical examiner testified that in Ms. Christian’s “genital rectal area” there was “blood pooled” to such an extent that she could have taken it out “with a spoon,” which she said was trauma way beyond what would be caused by even the most brutal rape, and indicated some attack to that area such as being kicked forcefully there.
Also, I’m pretty certain that Christopher Newsom was anally raped with an object.
Next trial, beginning shortly, is of the apparent ringleader Lemaricus Davidson, who was pictured by the defense and “character” witnesses in the present trial as having led little (half)brother Cobbins astray in supposedly coercing him with fear to participate in this crime. (But it was when older brother was out of the house that Cobbins orally raped Ms. Christian as he admitted, tearing the membrane connecting her lip or cheek to her gum.)
Remember the days when rape alone got the death penalty?
As Ms. Christian’s father reportedly said after the verdict, “What do you have to do today to get the death penalty?”
Fear of consequences is what keeps those without conscious from acting unconscionably. The cowardice of that jury has indirectly insured that more people will be raped, tortured and murdered. But at least they can sleep all cozy in their little beds tonight knowing they spared this animal’s life. They blew it.
2 Wayne Eagle: You bet the “ringleader” will get life too. The next jury will get the same story, bad childhood and blame the accomplice, and Davidson will go on Three Squares and a Roof for Life. Co-felons should never be tried separately, they should have to sit in the same room and explain themselves to the same judge and jury. The only reason for separate trials is to make lying easier.
A defendant is found guilty of first degree murder and is sentenced to life without parole. This result causes intense anger among the public. I don’t think I have ever seen this before. If Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom had been shot dead in the parking lot this sentence would not have caused the outrage it did.
The reason is the agonizing torture the young couple received. That is why people were so upset over the verdict.
There is an upside to the verdict. A death sentence would very likely have been reversed by an appellate court on the grounds of “pre-trial publicity,” and they would have wanted nothing better than to overturn it in this trial. A life without parole sentence is unlikely to be reversed. Considering the jury, a life without parole sentence is better than it could have been.
With alittle luck, he will get his in prison. I can’t believe he did not get the death penalty. I think that if I was a juror, I would have kept repeating what Jake wrote to drive home the point of what they did to Christian, WHILE SHE WAS ALIVE, and then let all their excuses to keep him alive fall on my deaf ears!
And I am another one who feels that the obamination is making race relations worse. The double standard is becoming ever more apparent and white folks are WAKING UP. Let the blacks start something and give us the excuse to “clean house”. Obama is maybe figuring his army of blacks will get the upper hand,. but that idea is a joke in itself. They are too stupid and can’t be controlled. They may get away with butchering whites in AfriKA, but they won’t here. I have a liberal “friend” in CT who went on and on about how intelligent and wonderful he is,. well, she and her husband won’t be hiding behind my skirt when the you-know-what hits the fan. I don’t even think they keep a firearm for protection in their home. He is a former Harvard professor. They haven’t a clue.
I am so sick of hearing the “poor childhood” defence. Are they somehow suggesting that because his parents were drug addicts, that he didn’t know the difference between right and wrong? Is he mentally retarted? No. Was he thinking about his poor childhood when he was engaged in the horrific torture of this couple? No. So what does his childhood have to do with it? Nothing. The excuse not to give the death penalty to this vicious monster because of a poor childhood to me, is absurd.
This is Justice?! Where are the White Mobs storming the Court House in outrage? Not too many years ago, these Criminals would have been dragged out and hanged for what they did.
These are the kind of people (animals) that Ted Kennedy forced the middle class of America to support and cater to ease his own guilt. He certainly played a big part in the deterioration and brain washing of America because he was a rich boy looking for a cause. He played a big part in the inferior genes presently flooding this country. An advanced civilization dies when inferior genes become the majority. And this country is on that track with no turning back in sight. Because superior genes respect law and order, those very laws now work to undermine its civilization. It is very obvious that this individual and others like him have no place in an advanced civilization. His inherited inferior genes should have not been allowed to reproduce long ago. Eventually, future superior genes for their own survival will have to make tough courageous decisions in the area of selective breeding.
Whatever happened to the “firing squad”? Seriously. Immediate, guilt-free (for the executers) end of life for these types.
A White’s life isn’t worth 2 cents, thanks to political correctness. This is a license for the underclass to rise up and kill the “oppressor” (Whitey)
The jury spared the sobbing, pleading family of the murderer the pain of his being executed.
The jury shifted that pain to the suffering families of the murdered.
That’s the twisted justice of today’s criminals-are-victims society.
That’s the twisted justice of today’s blacks-are-victims society.
That’s the twisted justice of today’s blacks-are-smart-enough-to-serve-on-juries society.
That’s….well, you get the idea.
Horrific childhood? What about the horrific things he did to this couple? What about the torture? What about the tourture that this two families went through when their son and their daughter were missing? What about the torture of these families finding out what happened to their son and daughter. What about the torture of these families sitting in a court room seeing pictures of their son and daughter’s bodies. What this low life did to this couple outweighs any childhood he had.He deserves the death penalty.Bring back the gallows!
In all honesty death by lethal injection is too easy for a crime as heinous as this (as well as others). Life at HARD labor in a gulag would be more appropriate. Let those we currently execute spend 16 hours a day at grueling labor in the middle of a desert with no hope of relief. Have them move dunes from the right to the left then back to the right again. Force them to grow the food they eat else starve. A lifetime of suffering and reflection with no hope for any release than death by natural or self-inflicted causes seems appropriate.
That insidious liberal POISON strikes again. Ever ready to excuse the perpetrators of the most revolting, most heineous crimes. Ready to provide society’s most revolting specimens with ready-made excuses for their foul deeds… how, pray tell, can poverty, a bad childhood “excuse” sadistic killers like this one?
I urge EVERY thinking AmRen reader to remember this if ever called to serve on a jury for a capital murder cas.
When this unhappy childhood defense is used, I think the parents of the criminal should be punished right along with the criminal. At the very least, the victims of the crime should be able to file civil suits against these parents for having contributed to their victimhood. Maybe lawyers would stop using this defense stratagy if it had consequences.
If isn’t the straw that broke the camels back, and sets the people on passionate fire, then nothing will. Our children will fade into obscuirity.
Our criminal justice system just doesn’t work for us - it’s a fact, just like traveling in Mexico and encountering corrupt cops, no reason to be “shocked” - that’s just the way it is.
We have to find new ways of living and thinking given the realities of what doesn’t work.
Other societies had different customs of crime and punishment that didn’t involve wasting 3 and half years to come to any type of punishment for a rapist, murderer.
Consider some rougher Hispanic societies or Southern Europeans, things like Vendettas have their place.
I agree with the above posters who theorized that the White jurors and possibly the Asian -American juror were intimidated. If the above scenario is true, I hope that soon these people will have recovered their stones and will speak out on what went on in the jury room.
I infer that all these people were from Nashville. Was that to guarantee their unawareness of the details of the crime or was it because there were no Whites in Knoxville who wanted to serve due to fear of reprisals by the “family” and peeps of the mutants?
If it were to find jurors who had no prior knowledge of the atrocity ( I use this word because in today’s society “crime” is too weak a word to describe what was visited upon that couple. By today’s standards a crime is running a Ponzi scheme or shoplifting) then it speaks volumes about the MSM and its ability to bury stories like this, as they so efficiently did with Wichita, Eve Carson, Lilly Burk, Lauren Burke. Missy Mc Laughlin, Anne Pressley et cetera ad infinitum. A few of these cases were reported initially and then suddenly and misteriously disappeared from the radar screen. Searching the internet revealed that the perpetrators in all cases were Black. In the Lilly Burk atrocity , Martha Mc Callum of FOX News was the only one who mentioned it and that was the last anyone heard of it.
I know that I’ve brought this up before but I can remember at least three cases where the scrawling of the dreaded “N word” attracted national attention. The case of the suburban Philadelphia swim club is a perfect example of a non- story that became a cause celebre.
Canada forbids the death penalty, and initially, I thought that was an example of typically Great White North liberalism and wishy-washy cowardice. However, infamous serial killer Paul Bernardo has been sentenced to life imprisonment in solitary confinement at Kingston Pen. A reporter who covered the story said that he would much rather die than have to live out the rest of his natural life as Paul Bernardo is doing. Canadians wanted Bernardo to go to hell, and they’re getting their wish. Giving him the death penalty would have been too light on him. This way, he’s truly suffering for the crimes he committed.
Of course, the trick is to make sure that the prison sentence is truly awful, not some sort of country club paradise (such as what Bernardo’s equally guilty ex-wife, Karla Homolka, got to enjoy). Done right, a life sentence instead of a death sentence can truly be the more miserable of the two to foist on criminals such as the Knoxville butchers.
To a piece of sub human sludge like this prison is like a vacation. He can rape and murder to his hearts content once he gets there? But I don’t blame him, I blame the white racists who cause this to happen, those victims just shouldn’t have been out on the street so it’s their own fault, when a poor mistreated black tortures and rapes them for several days? (Total Sarcasm)
The death penalty in Tennessee is a joke, as it is in most states. The convict sits on death row for 30 years and the tax payers foot the bill for appeal after appeal. And there is no doubt that his lawyers will file an appeal. With the taxpayers footing the bill for their legal fees, it is a given.
I wasn’t surprised that his family pleaded for mercy. What else would they do - stand up and say he deserves to die? And it is equally not surprising that they blamed his crimes against Channon and Christopher on his pathetic childhood. Remember the newspapers have described all 4 defendants as “poor and black” and the victims were described as “white and middle-class.” As if that should make any difference. With the white jurors outnumbered, I’m sure they were intimidated into voting for life w/o parole.
I wouldn’t be against the life w/o parole if he was going to prison and have to serve his life sentence at hard labor. But the hardest labor he is going to have is lifting weights and his meal trays.
This is the current template used by blacks to excuse and reduce(!) both charges and sentences. The coverage is total, even the comment boards in local papers are infiltrated. Deflection comments examples are:
1. Why are you bringing race into this? Every race commits crime (Avoiding the huge Black on white disparity and Typical on a story of black on white crime).
2. You can’t know what it’s like to be black in America.
3. Black on White crime stats don’t mean anything, because Whites commit more white collar crime, but it’s covered up. (Like Rape or Armed Robbery is the same as Embezzlement.)
4. He fell in with the wrong sort (Like being out at 2am and killing a person was not really his fault, just a function of association).
5. He was just turning his life around (This was just a bump in his never ending struggle to be the next fine, upstanding citizen taxpayer.
6. We can know all the facts, and who are we to judge what we would do in such circumstances? (Obscuring the fairly simple facts of blacks attacking/killing/raping whites.
And twenty or more others. These do not appear to change over time and are the teaching of the Black church, NO MATTER HOW AWFUL THE CRIME.
Blacks have embraced at least one aspect of the internet, the comment boards, and they don’t like what they hear. Their reaction is to run interference based on race.
I am speechless.
Did anybody read the next to last sentence of Misha Davidson?
What does “I know you hate his guts.” mean?
Does it mean that her brother should be honored for being brave enough to kill two innocent people?
If this is the meaning then I would like to quote Max Liebermann:
“I could not eat as much as I would like to vomit.”
From “fred” #22:
“…The cowardice of that jury has indirectly insured that more people will be raped, tortured and murdered…”
Yes. I would also add this:
The silence of the media has directly insured that more Whites will be raped tortured and murdered by blacks who target them specifically for murder and mayhem.
“…If isn’t the straw that broke the camel’s back, and sets the people on passionate fire, then nothing will…”
We have to know about it to become righteously enraged—again, I saw no mention of this case in SoCal where I live. The Lily Burk case, which happened right here died after a few days with no photo ever printed of the black criminal that bashed in her head.
It is the media’s fault for burying and then silencing these stories and then blowing out of proportion stories such as (as another poster mentioned) someone scrawling the n-word somewhere (and when it turns out that a black is the culprit, burying or not printing the corrected story as well).
From “Buffalogal” #25:
“… I don’t even think they keep a firearm for protection in their home. He is a former Harvard professor. They haven’t a clue…”
One of the investment newsletters that I read suggests that if you ever get into an argument with a person who believes that guns commit crimes and that the American people should be disarmed by government force do this:
Go to your computer and print out a page or small banner that reads “Proud to be a Gun-Free Home!” and give it to them as a gift. Ask them to place it in their front window or on their front door. Question why if they resist.
We are in end days when the lying government-controlled media refuse to report or warn us about massive black on White crime rates. They’d rather leave us vulnerable to predatory, maurading blacks and disarm us. We are expendable Kulaks as the hostile elites in the media and government live in White majority communities such as Chappaqua behind iron gates in neighborhoods guarded by armed patrols.
This is where the outrage should be directed.
Bon
Just one more instance of blacks being as lenient on their own kind as they think they can get away with without raising a rebellion by whites.
Make no mistake about it. I seriously doubt there is even one black on that jury that doesn’t believe that the conduct of these two black thugs was prompted by their distorted view that all blacks are somehow victims of all whites.
Every black on white crime that occurs is viewed by most all blacks as payback for all black inefficiencies and failures, because they’re too unintelligent to understand that their lack of abilities have nothing to do with whites and everything to do with how they have evolved.
I don’t think a single one of them understands that black Africans do even worse, on average, than they do here, even in countries that have had almost no white influence at all.
Remember the black lady on television right after Obama was elected who announced that now she would get a new car and have her mortgage paid by Obama? How can such dimwits EVER fit into a civilized society? The answer, of course, is that they can’t. It’s useless to try anything but a separation of the races to insure domestic peace.
But that will never happen. And, it is this black attitude that will bring racial war to this country.
Parents of Chris and Channon speak out.
Gary Christian: ‘He deserves to die’
By Matt Lakin
Posted August 27, 2009
The families walked into the courtroom in silence. They walked out in disappointment.
“The jury let us down,” said Chris Newsom’s mother, Mary. “They’ve let Channon and Chris down. We were hoping for the death penalty. But we’re the ones under the death sentence. We had to look at those pictures. We have to live with this for the rest of our lives.”
The parents of Chris Newsom and Channon Christian spent the past two weeks hearing about the last moments of their children’s lives - Newsom’s at the point of a gun by the railroad tracks and Christian’s hog-tied in a garbage can. They saw the photos of their children’s bodies, the closeups of the fatal injuries, the bullets pulled from Newsom’s body and the trash can where Christian died.
“You saw it and I saw it,” said Christian’s father, Gary. “The jury saw it. They know what he did. He deserves to die.”
The decision by jurors from Davidson County - life in prison without parole - means Letalvis Cobbins will die behind bars for his part in the couple’s kidnapping, rape and killing. The sentence spares the families from a decade or more of appeals through the state and federal courts. That brought no comfort.
“I don’t care about the appeals,” Gary Christian said. “This is personal. You get justice. For the citizens of Knox County, I’m glad, because they’re safe from Letalvis Cobbins for the rest of their lives. But we didn’t get justice.”
Newsom’s father, Hugh, said he’d feared this result since the trial started. He believes the jurors lost their nerve at the critical moment.
“Every person on that jury said they could vote to impose the death penalty,” he said. “But when it came time to mark that paper, they couldn’t do it. The jury didn’t do its job.”
Channon Christian’s mother, Deena, wondered why the jury didn’t see what she saw.
“He gets a chance to live,” she said. “They never gave Channon or Chris that chance.”
The sister and cousin who took the stand to beg for Cobbins’ life didn’t stay to hear the jury’s decision.
“If they were so concerned about him, why aren’t they here?” Mary Newsom asked.
Cobbins’ half-brother, Lemaricus Davidson, could go to trial next month. Davidson, accused as the ringleader in the killing, has asked for a jury from Knox County.
“That’s where the jury should have come from to start with,” Hugh Newsom said. “Those people from outside Knox County don’t know the whole story.”
Like most racially aware Whites, I have been watching this story since the beginning. It was only through these types of sites that I discovered the racial identity of those involved. I gave the perps a less than 50% chance of getting the death penalty. Most of my thoughts have already been posted…a sad sickening crime committed by horrible beings.
The only things I can add is that this is neither the end, middle or the beginning. Many of our people are killed every year because of the color of our skin. Another aspect that I would bring up is that if the races were reversed, the parties involved would have been sentenced to death…and justifibly so as these are horrible crimes.
Our world is on fire and they are killing our people while the media attempts to cover it up.
I guess when a black person tortures and kills whites, it’s just one of those things. But black people should think twice before high fiving about this one. What does it say when much of the larger society thinks that this is simply how blacks act…and therefore they shouldn’t be held to the same standards as the rest of us and shouldn’t be punished for it?
Thanks, Al Sharpton. And Jesse. And Obama.
I live in Nashville and it is terrible what happened to these kids. I remember hearing about it on the radio, yet nothing was said in the local media. The Repub mayor of Knoxville was wishy washy on this case and Knoxville feared a race war. I favor the death penalty for this reason…I sincerely hope that nothing but hell awaits these thugs. BTW, Nashville was one of 3 places in TN that went for Obama…we have a bunch of Liberal progressives here.
Perhaps these juries are afraid of retaliation. They are seen by the criminal, their families, their friends, fellow gangbangers. I am sure that if they could, the juries would suggest harsher punishment. However, since they are opnely in the court, stared at for hours, I am sure that they live in fear during these trials that if they were to suggest something harsh, then they would get attacked themselves.
Frankly we need to figure out a way to telecommute for jury participants.
Oh, we “benighted racists” just don’t understand the jury’s “thinking.” The black perp. had a “horrific childhood” and the whites probably had a decent childhood. Therefore, in the racist and Marxist mind what the monster did to the two victims wasn’t all that bad. You see, INEQUALITY is the ultimate evil. So, by evening the score on horrific happenings “justice” was served!
There has been only one other case I can think of that was of a similar magnitude, and we have to look at the jury results and the aftermath to be less than harsh when we speak of life without parole. That was the case where the family [four brothers and one sister] in Georgia was wiped out by the villains decades ago now. Mass slaughter and sexual assault by five escaped convicts. All five were sentenced to death, then after thirteeen years they got retrial, and only one of the original five got death the second time, and it took thirty one years before they finally executed the ring leader!!
Wambaugh the detective and crime writer said that it is not so much the original crime that is bad but what occurs AFTERWARD that is the real crime. True!!
Letalvis and his buddies, however, are not like us [that is obvious]! They do not mind life WITHOUT PAROLE, rather, more than anything else find prison life boring. Have their friends there, don’t mind the restrictions, get to raise some hell from time to time, all their needs are met, they get their booze, pills and sex on a regular basis, and are basically contented with their life. NOT as would a normal person, BUT THEY ARE NOT NORMAL. AND can always find religion, become a “muslim” [don’t all the colored go for the “muslim” religion] and get protection inside the joint too!!

“I guess when a black person tortures and kills whites, it’s just one of those things. But black people should think twice before high fiving about this one. What does it say when much of the larger society thinks that this is simply how blacks act…and therefore they shouldn’t be held to the same standards as the rest of us and shouldn’t be punished for it?
Thanks, Al Sharpton. And Jesse. And Obama.”
Anon,
Trust me they don’t give a damn what it says. They are devoid of even a scintilla of human compassion. It’s all about them and their immediate urges. See, you and I can’t even conceive of committing such atrocities on two innocent people and by extension can’t conceive of another human being doing it. As I read the things that were done to them and to the men and woman in Wichita and Eve Carson, Lauren Burke and all the countless others I’ve become severly depressed. Every day I think that it could be my wife, daughter or son or my grandchildren who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and now it seems that anyplace and anywhere could be the wrong time.
People question what these victims were doing “in that neighborhood” . There IS no such thing as a safe neighborhood anymore; at least not for White people. Freinds of mine live in a gated community in Florida. There are security guards at the gates; all of them Black and seeing some of them didn’t give me a sense of safety.
Consider the case of Anne Pressley beaten to death in her own home by a Black thug( that’s almost a redundancy these days). There was apparently no sign of forced entry. Did she leave her door unlocked? Did she open the door to this bastard? Was there some liason between the two of them? I try not to think about the latter possibility.
There will come a time when we’ll have to begin to strike back and that time is almost here.
Letalvis will be hailed as a hero by all black prisoners. He will find prison life very accomodating for a man of his caliber. It’s will all be champagne wishes & caviar dreams for him from here until eternity. He has hopped aboard the gravy train.
There was black convicted of murder in Arkansas a few years ago and sentenced to life without parole. Three weeks into his life sentence, he escaped from prison in a food bin, shot and killed a neighboring landowner, stole his SUV and headed into Missouri. There he collided head on with a delivery driver, leaving him dead and his children and pregnant wife without their provider. He was captured, returned to Arkansas, tried for those crimes and I believe finally given the death penalty. I wonder what the victims’ families think of the jury that sentenced him the first time.
There are other who had a miserable childhood, but didn’t evolve to become rapists and murderers!
Come to think of it, on a certain level, this almost sounds a bit like the Sotomayor story, about growing up in the Bronx as a latina in America, and blah-blah-blah…
I am in no way comparing Sonia Sotomayor to murderer Letalvis; it’s just that this thing minorities often use as an excuse, about growing up poor and/or in a society in which they soon learned they were part of a minority, etc, has really worn thin, I think!
3 Hots:
Speaking of AR and the death penalty, there was at one point during the time that Mike Huckabee was Governor that both he and the Lieutenant Governor were out of the state at the same time. This gave the power of the Governorship to someone who was either the Speaker of the State House or President of the State Senate (can’t remember which). But he was a black man, and used the power to commute a lot of black death row convicts to life. After that, the state passed a law that the Gov and Lt.Gov. can’t be out of state at the same time.
What does it take to get the death penalty?
Just unbelievable! Every time a jury is intimidated we slip closer to anarchy.
So when things come apart look to the “gated few” in Chappaqua, etc. for they have brought this on.
Speaking of which,if Sen. Kennedy was treated like the rest of us out here on our own, he would have been found guilty of at least manslaugter and the damage he has done to this Country would have at least been mitigated.
This savage attack was a hate crime, as was also the jury verdict for life imprisonment rather than the death penalty.
I am not a racist and I don’t like the death penalty much. I also fear for innocent people being convicted.
But some ‘people’ are far, far less socialized than others. In other words, they are extremely dangerous and there is no hope for changing their ‘minds’, whatever that mind is.
Why should they stay alive? We put dogs and bears down for less than that, because we know there is no other way to deal with it.
Obviously his sisters are not bad. But something is truly messed up with the males in the family.
“McElroy: Cobbins case about overcoming racism”
That’s the title of today’s article about the case by the editor of Knoxville’s newspaper.
http://tinyurl.com/np7sxo
If you want to post to it, keep in mind that they preview your first post. Despite the heavy censorship at that newspaper, it could be a feisty thread (one day’s thread on the case had 650 posts!)
Earth to ‘Clark’, no, 60 above:
Thanks for illustrating a point I’ve mentioned before: the sound of an argument being lost before it has begun is the statement ‘I am not a racist’.
Clark, here’s a clue: there is no racism , but there’s plenty of “racism” in the world, which is when anyone like you says anything like this:
“I’m not a racist…but some ‘people’ are far, far less socialized than others” [your words].
Here’s the news: for saying this, you are nothing but a “racist”, as ordained by our current Establishment. And as long as you care about avoiding the label, you’re a loser, you’ve bought in, you’ve drunk the Kool-Aide, and you’re no help to your race—quite the opposite, in fact.
Please don’t do us any more “favors”, my friend.
Today’s article in the Knoxville News Sentinel about the upcoming trial of the supposed ringleader:
“Strategies in Davidson trial likely to resemble those in Cobbins’ case”
http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2009/aug/31/strategies-davidson-trial-likely-resemble-those-co/
There were some good comments to yesterday’s article that I linked above, and very little censorship, which is unusual.
Here’s a post I put up there:
The racial liberals have captured us all, every one of us.
They have us all agreeing that feelings of racial solidarity in WHITES are bad.
They have us all agreeing that racial solidarity in WHITES should be referred to by the word, “racism,” and that “racism” is bad.
Thereefore, these threads contain no argument over the basic question of whether whites should or shouldn’t re-acquire a feeling of racial solidarity to help them reconstruct an orderly society.
We have all accepted the racial liberals’ view that such a thing would be “racism” and therefore a moral horror to even consider.
Instead, we argue within the bounds the racial liberals have set for us—we argue over whether certain acts are “racist” are not, with everyone accepting the racial liberals’ belief that if an act is “racist,” it’s a bad act.
When your enemy controls the terms of discourse, you’ve lost the argument.
To 64 — Oops, the brainwashing wore off:
Yeah, dealing with that word “racism” is a real problem.
My latest tactic (I’ve tried many) where I post in Knoxville is, when a poster makes an accusation of “racism,” I post back:
“‘Racism’ is a word used by persons who have no argument, who have no analysis.”
(If anyone likes that response, feel free to use it).
The word “racism” is a new word that was not even known when I was a young man. The word has been introduced and spread by our media and institutions and has done its nasty work.
It’s a word used to bring discussion and thought to a halt.
Or to make discussion and thought just run around in circles and get nowhere.
People have been trained to have one concern and one concern only about anything having to do with race, and that concern is, is it racist.
If a death penalty can not be awarded in a gruesome kidnap/rape/torture murder like this one, what on earth is the point of having a death penalty in the first place?
It would have blown me out of the water if the jury had voted for the death penalty, given the blacks on the jury, and I’m certain the whites felt obligated to appease the blacks. So, here we have it. On the other hand, the point has been made that life imprisonment, provided it’s not in a country club environment, could prove to be more punishment than a quick death from lethal injection. Cobbins deserves to die at least as agonizing a death as Miss Christian and Mr. Newsom did, if justice is to be served.
Only 40 years ago there probably would have been a white riot and/or attempt to get the perps. I only hope he meets up with the AB in prison.
Will the convicted killers get conjugal visits if given life?
Lamaricus Davidson had a white girlfriend named Daphne Sutton who, according to some reports, wore some of Channon Christian’s clothes and jewelry and was pregnant with Davidson’s child.
It will be interesting how this plays out.
All the rapist/torturers/murderers should be executed. But liberals adore violent criminals, especially those who hurt whites. Probably none of them will be executed.
