House Formally Apologizes for Slavery and Jim Crow

More news stories on Pandering Politicians

Jim Abrams, AP, July 29, 2008

The House on Tuesday issued an unprecedented apology to black Americans for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow segregation laws.

{snip}

The resolution, passed by voice vote, was the work of Tennessee Democrat Steve Cohen, the only white lawmaker to represent a majority black district. Cohen faces a formidable black challenger in a primary face-off next week.

Congress has issued apologies before—to Japanese-Americans for their internment during World War II and to native Hawaiians for the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom in 1893. In 2005, the Senate apologized for failing to pass anti-lynching laws.

{snip}

The Cohen resolution does not mention reparations. It does commit the House to rectifying “the lingering consequences of the misdeeds committed against African-Americans under slavery and Jim Crow.”

It says that Africans forced into slavery “were brutalized, humiliated, dehumanized and subjected to the indignity of being stripped of their names and heritage” and that black Americans today continue to suffer from the consequences of slavery and Jim Crow laws that fostered discrimination and segregation.

The House “apologizes to African-Americans on behalf of the people of the United States, for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow.”

“Slavery and Jim Crow are stains upon what is the greatest nation on the face of the earth,” Cohen said. {snip}

Cohen became the first white to represent the 60 percent black district in Memphis in more than three decades when he captured a 2006 primary where a dozen black candidates split the vote. He has sought to reach out to his black constituents, and early in his term showed interest in joining the Congressional Black Caucus until learning that was against caucus rules.

Another of his first acts as a freshman congressman in early 2007 was to introduce the slavery apology resolution. His office said that the House resolution was brought to the floor only after learning that the Senate would be unable to join in a joint resolution.

I think Congress should make a “formal apology” to all White Americans for importing all these millions of non-White 3rd worlders the past 40 years…

Posted by Stone Greaser at 6:17 PM on July 31

I want to go on record to state that the the House of Representatives does not speak for me, but then, it usually does not speak for many Americans.

Posted by Franklin M. Ward at 6:18 PM on July 31

Does this man actually think this will endure him to blacks?

Wasn’t the blood spilt during the Civil War enough of a price to pay for slavery?

I wonder just where all this apologizing will lead us. People such as this man are selling out his future generation. Thinking this will sooth race relations is absurd. It will only antagonize and show weakness.

How many more national apologies, how much illegitimate heart-wringing, how much useless guilt, how many more white faces need to be slapped until blacks collectively feel happy? Since none of those living today in the US was alive at the time of slavery, these people are apologizing for something that they didn’t do, and also which their own ancestors may not have done, since many whites, like my own family, immigrated to the US in the 20th century. When are blacks going to collectively apologize to me for their responsibility in the crime wave upon the streets of my city, as well as cities across the nation, which is being perpetrated principally by black criminals? When are blacks going to apologize to me for the fact, as US Dept of JUstice statistics show, that 89% of interracial violent crimes are perpetrated by blacks against whites, and that any given black person is 50 times more likely to commit a violent crime against a white person than the reverse? When are blacks going to apologize to whites for preying upon us? I want an apology and I want it NOW.

On Tuesday July 29th the House “apologized to African-Americans on behalf of the people of the United States, for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow.”

Well, it won’t be too long that the House will have to issue another apology to our present-day slaves; I refer to illegal immigrants presently working in abysmal conditions in plants and restaurants all over the country.

The San Francisco Chronicle in today’s (July 31st) edition referred to the outrage of conditions under which 400 illegal immigrants were forced to work at the Agriprocessors, Inc., in Postville Iowa: These wretches were forced to work from 12 to 15 hour shifts under appalling conditions for $7.25, straight with no time-and-a-half for overtime nor did they receive any benefits.

When one is subject to an owner/employer’s whim—whether that treatment be good, bad or indifferent, with no recourse to the law for relief, than one has become a slave

Next, I would like an apology for the appalling behavior that the black race his visited upon not only the USA but all First World societies. I won’t hold my breath, though.

Our Congress has betrayed and humiliated us with an anonymous voice vote! This bill “moves us forward” toward passage of Rep. John Conyers’ H.R. 40 which seeks to legitimize the claims for slavery reparations.

Culpability having been established, next comes the $lippery $lope of atonement. I could support subsidized repatriation. Or we might even consider providing our blacks with a State of their own, and then allowing them to secede; God’s speed!

Would some of Amren’s Jewish contributers have a word with this Cohen gent - a throwback to another time, what’s this guy doing representing a heavily Black Memphis TN congressional district?

“he House on Tuesday issued an unprecedented apology to black Americans for the wrongs committed against them and their ancestors who suffered under slavery and Jim Crow segregation laws. In 2005, the Senate apologized for failing to pass anti-lynching laws.”

“How can people today apologize for something they didn’t do and to people today who didn’t have anything done to them??? Just another white politician trying to score brownee points with blacks.

Posted by at 9:37 PM on July 31

There is no need to apologize for slavery, and jim crow. The bible does not condemn slavery. This is just a cheap way for
politicians to get votes, and whom do no care what type of
country is left to their prosperity. What about congress
apologizing for the crime wave caused by Blacks, and Black
upon White crime. The talking heads will never talk about this
issue. Political correctness is nothing but cultural marxism,
and will caused the collapse of this country into a third world
morass. If it was not for Jim Crow, and that our ancestors
choose to intermixed with blacks, and produced a mongrel race.
We would be just a third world country like Brazil, and Mexico.
There would have been no inventions such as the automobile,
the airplane, and the comforts invented by White Americans that we enjoy today. The world today would be much different, with Nazi Germany, and Imperial Japan would now be the world powers.
There is no history, nor will there every be a nation of Mongrels
ever attaining first world status. The signs are everywhere,
from the pending economic collapse, useless fought wars, and
a world that no longer respects us.
I make no apology for slavery, nor Jim Crow.

The US Congress no longer speaks for me. I do not agree with this act and it is a lie. Africans sold their black brothers into slavery and slaves were sent to the Carribian, Cuba, Nicaragua, Brazil, and Central America. The British legalized slavery not today’s white people. We are moving one more step to CIVIL WAR. I repudiate Congress.

Obviously the House has nothing better to do than apologize on behalf of dead people. When I’m 90 in 2074, maybe I should apologize to my great-grandchildren on behalf of the spineless white politicians who destroyed the West with diversity.

Posted by Kirsten at 9:58 PM on July 31

The goofy thing about this is that this vote was taken by a voice vote. That way, we’ll never knew who voted which way. Thankfully, though, the Senate probably won’t be able to pull this trick. I have already wheeled off letters to Bond and McCaskill; I suggest you all do the same for your two Sens.

Otherwise, Congress just stiffed you with a $10-odd trillion reparations bill.

Posted by Question Diversity at 10:13 PM on July 31

“The Cohen resolution does not mention reparations. It does commit the House to rectifying ‘the lingering consequences of the misdeeds committed against African-Americans under slavery and Jim Crow.”

May this wretched swine Cohen burn in the lowest depths of hell for all eternity, once he departs this earth!

One cannot fully gauge the damage to our race and country that will be inflicted upon both because of this stupidity, but reparations to a wholly undeserving and pernicious segment of “American humanity,” blacks, cannot be far behind. Thus, the House has utterly disgraced itself; thus, any member who participated in this outrage of tyrannical treachery, should be impeached and then put on trial for their treason.

It won’t happen anytime soon, I know that, but if it ever does I hope I am alive to see it!

JR:

I’m not Jewish, but I think I know the answer: In 2006, Harold Ford, Jr. gave up that seat to run for Senate. There were multiple legit blacks with credible political chops who ran, and Mr. Cohen. You can infer what happened.

Posted by Question Diversity at 10:53 PM on July 31

To whom was this apology directed? who accepted for the blacks? I will ask the same questions when reparations begin and the same of the 50 billion dollars going to Africa. WHO will sign for it?? And also to address the wages and hours the “poor” Somalis are working for. $7.50 an hour for 12 to 15 hours a day is far less hours than they usually work and $7.50 is more than some of them make in a month at home and they live (by choice) in bunches in the same room.

Posted by Skip at 4:08 AM on August 1

With the liklihood of reparation payouts to blacks I just bet the drug dealers, car dealers, pimp clothiers, liquor stores, style boutiques, weapons dealers, donk car accessory makers are all watering at the mouth. Everyone but those who think any debts are going to be paid by the recipients of these payments.

Great news, signals an end to the so far unending race problems in America, there will be harmony among all, JJ and Sharpton have seen their dreams fullfilled, blacks acrosss America are rejoicing, certainly there should be a national holiday honoring this event, an end to affirmative action, minority hiring quotas, all those gov. imposed racial preference laws will surely be overturned. Also, at this historical time in American history we are poised to elect our first black prez. Life is gonna be so good!!!!

One thing is certain - that pack in Washington truly do seem bound and determined to tear this country apart once and for all. When one observes the collective nonsense our supposed “representatives” perpetuate against us, one can only surmise that this really is a calculated war against White Americans. There is no other explanation - not even greed and hunger for power, although those elements do play their individual part.

Posted by HH at 6:22 AM on August 1

I have no problem with black people however the self-flagellation of white people in America is making me sick to my stomach and I feel ashamed to be an American. I feel ashamed to live in a place where these white people are engaged in this goofy behavior they are engaged in where they are constantly filled with self-hate. Goofy is the only word I can think of to describe it.

Posted by Ashamed at 7:19 AM on August 1

“Otherwise, Congress just stiffed you with a $10-odd trillion reparations bill.”

That’s exactly what they want you to be debating…

I’m not going to dignify the idea of reparations for slavery, oddly enough being brought up in the strange times we live in now, 150 years later. I’m not going to play along.

Posted by Dinosaur Hatchling at 8:06 AM on August 1

First off, Mr. Cohen is pandering cause his time is up. He’ll get defeated by another black reguardless of what either has or has not done.
Second, I’ll sleep better tonite because I know a formal apology will heal all wounds.
Third, I suggest one of our braver congressmen insert “repatriation’ for “reparation”. The lazier politicians won’t or can’t read that well and something good may actually come from this. Just some thoughts.

It does commit the House to rectifying “the lingering consequences of the misdeeds committed against African-Americans under slavery and Jim Crow.”

This means reparations, continued affirmative action and absolutely NO MENTION of racial differences in IQ. It means continued white subservience to the demands of non-whites. And eventually it will mean large scale discrimination against a dwindling white minority.

JR,
I am Jewish. In addition to Cohen’s exclusion from the Black Caucus, some black Christians before his most recent nomination in the Democratic primaries passed out pamphlets saying that Cohen and the Jews hate Jesus. Granted, I know many Jews who do hate Jesus, but the action was a clear swipe by blacks against Jews because of a self-conscious Jew who thought he could win the blacks over.

I am Jewish JR, he represents the area just like the white people of Mass and Virginia were sttupid enough to vote a black man into power

I agree with Franklin M. Ward above. I told my husband the exact same thing. How dare anybody apology for something that I had and my family had NOTHING to do with.

Although I do remember when I was a lot younger, my great-grandmother Laughlin, used to talk about a family member who was one of the men hung as a co-conspirator in the assassination of President Lincoln. I used to ask my Mom about it but she said she only heard bits and pieces when she was kid too. In any event, that’s about as close as my family gets to being responsible for slavery.

Posted by Gayle C. Sollenberger at 12:13 PM on August 1

The only legally and morally defensible course of action in terms of reparation for today’s black Americans is the offer of immediate repatriation to the African country of their choice. They would thus be “made whole” again after rejoining their black countrymen, still mired in the Stone Age despite the advances of modern civilization provided them by white colonists whom they’ve chased out.

It doesn’t take a genius to realize that our government is traitorous. We’re being ripped-off and destroyed.

Consider the shame of it - White Americans forced to pay taxes at gunpoint so that other peoples can replace them. Who are the slaves?

We deserve it and we’re going to get every inch of it.

‘I know many Jews who do hate Jesus…..”
I’m very skeptical of this claim. I would expect that Jews, like all other Americans should be thinking of more important things than hating Jesus, who lived so many centuries ago and who may or may not have been the Messiah. I mean even if he were just a nut case, he never preached violence and forgave his tormentors from the cross.
I think that Jews might be better advised to direct their hatred toward Mohammed and his present days disciples who plan their extermination and that of Christians as well.

Count me out of this apology, too. My representative never asked for my input.

Notice the logic the apology implies. It is on behalf of ‘the American people.’ So the recipients of the apology are logically not the American people or the apology would be to themselves. What they are saying is that blacks are not part of the American people - and that’s fine with me.

No reparations without repatriation.

To 10:13 AM

I really appreciate the Jewish contributors to Amren and I note with satisfaction that there is way, way less Jewish support for Black hate Whitey, blame Whitey politics now than there was ~ 25 years ago. Jewish New Yorkers supported Guliani and the NYPD crack down on Black crime at similar rates as other Whites.

Compare this good situation now, with what it was like 25 years ago. I had to go to school when “Roots” was being forced down on us through the Network TV and others and I did see a heavy Jewish support for the idea that American history is the tale of evil Whites enslaving and oppressing virtuous Blacks and Blacks are justified in hating and attacking Whites now for supposed sins by other Whites 100 years ago.

But, this individual Jewish Congressman Cohen in Tennessee is doing very bad - inciting the Blacks, scapegoat Whites as a means to get fame and political power. Jewish people here need to contact him, his staff and tell him/them that they do not support this type of behavior. No reason to threaten Cohen and no reason to feel that you are becoming an evil White racist or a self hating Jew, nothing like that, you are just being a good American and opposing racial scapegoating, pandering.

Here is the contact info for Congressman Cohen:

Look at Haiti, look at any country in continental Africa including Liberia. Look at these countries and tell me that there is no such thing as a racial heirarchy that has and always will be natural law. Look at a high school lunch room anywhere in America. Look at how the races self segregate. Folks it is not rocket science. Peoples of this earth are meant to be around their own peoples. This has been proved time and time again. It is truly a shame when poor whites in this country have to be subjected to the abysmal darkness that pervades and dominates the lower rungs of our society. Therefore forever diminishing and tarnishing any potentials they may have had at a decent future.

Yes, thanks to black on white racism, Cohen can’t join the Congressional Black Congress. Blacks can exclude us whenever they want, but us whites don’t have the option, we must include them in everything….now even the Iowa State Fair.

But WHO WILL APOLOGIZE for the mentality of Afro-Americans/ Read this excerpt of a story on today’s MSN NEWS…

PHILADELPHIA - For days before Danieal Kelly died in a fetid, airless room — made stifling hot by a midsummer heat wave — the bedridden teenager begged for something to drink until she could muster only one word: water.

Unable to help herself because of her cerebral palsy, she wasted away from malnutrition and maggot-infested bedsores that ate her flesh. She died alone on a putrid mattress in her mother’s home, the floor covered in feces. She was 14 but weighed just 42 pounds.

The House may, but I don’t, and never will.

As the writer to Cambria will not yield constantly points out, all such POV’s are non-Christian, and Satanist.

(I have a post above, the second one.) After posting I went on line to read the actual resolution. If you read it, be prepared to be sick. But, it is important to note that it is the House, not the country, that is apologizing. I suppose that is because the Senate has not joined in the resolution. Give them time! After all, they had to get out of town before someone says they are not doing enough to solve the gas price problem. Look for a Senate resolution before the election. Ain’t it a grand congress we have? What was that about doing the people’s work?

You can’t; they did a voice vote. I think they did a voice vote on purpose in order not to link names with yay votes. If the Senate takes it up, they will probably have to vote publicly.

Late update on this story:

http://www.politico.com/blogs/jonathanmartin/0808/All_about_race_in_Memphis.html

As you know, Cohen represents a heavily black district. He won, in a district where the Ford dynasty represented it for decades, because multiple blacks with legit political chops were in the race, and he was the only white.

Now, the black political power structure in Memphis has their act together, and they want the district back. In the above URL, you’ll see that the woman opposing Cohen, who was also in the race two years ago, is essentially calling Cohen a K-sympathizer.

I just love it when these pandering white liberals get their comeuppance.
