Danny Glover’s Slavery Film Lacked “White Heroes”, Producers Said

More news stories on Black Myths

AFP, July 25, 2008

US actor Danny Glover, who plans an epic next year on Haitian independence hero Toussaint-Louverture, said he slaved to raise funds for the movie because financiers complained there were no white heroes.

“Producers said ‘It’s a nice project, a great project . . . where are the white heroes?’” he told AFP during a stay in Paris this month for a seminar on film.

“I couldn’t get the money here, I couldn’t get the money in Britain. I went to everybody. You wouldn’t believe the number of producers based in Europe, and in the States, that I went to,” he said.

“The first question you get, is ‘Is it a black film?’ All of them agree, it’s not going to do good in Europe, it’s not going to do good in Japan.

“Somebody has to prove that to be a lie!” he said. “Maybe I’ll have the chance to prove it.”

“Toussaint,” Glover’s first project as film director, is about Francois Dominique Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803), a former slave and one of the fathers of Haiti’s independence from France in 1804, making it the first black nation to throw off imperial rule and become a republic.

The uprising he led was bloodily put down in 1802 by 20,000 soldiers dispatched to the Caribbean by Napoleon Bonaparte, who then re-established slavery after its ban by the leaders of the French Revolution.

Due to be shot in Venezuela early next year, the film will star Don Cheadle, Mos Def, Wesley Snipes and Angela Bassett.

“I wasn’t the first one who had this idea,” he said. “Sergey Eisenstein had the same idea, Anthony Quinn had this idea, Harry Belafonte, Sidney Poitier, and this goes on.”

The “Lethal Weapon” co-star, just turned 62, finally raised 18 of the 30 million dollars needed from a Venezuelan cultural body set up in 2006 by his friend President Hugo Chavez to counter what he termed “the Hollywood film dictatorship”.

Venezuelan filmmakers last year slammed the investment.

“It is Mr Glover who should be bringing dollars to Venezuela,” the National Association of Film Makers and the Venezuelan Chamber of Film Producers said in an open letter.

Glover, a longtime activist, has supported Chavez’s political revolution since he was first elected in 1998.

After making his debut with a bit role in 1979 movie starring Clint Eastwood, “Escape From Alcatraz”, Glover played in films such as “Silverado” and “Witness” but grabbed wide attention after Steven Spielberg’s 1985 movie “The Color Purple”.

He is probably most widely known as “Lethal Weapon” co-star with Mel Gibson.

Born in San Francisco, he enrolled at the Black Actors Workshop there and is known for his stand against discrimination as well as for his activism against the Iraqi war and anti-personnel mines.

An admirer of the Senegalese writer-filmmaker known as the father of African cinema, Ousmane Sembene, Glover has helped produce African films, including the recently-acclaimed arthouse movie “Bamako” by Abderrahmane Sissako.

“The first African films that I saw were films that portrayed Africans as savages, ignorant and uncivilized, and I wanted to know something else,” he said. “I was very fortunate, I had the chance to read writers like Mariama Ba, Aime Cesaire … and Leopold Sedar Senghor. I read him when I was 20.”

“When I saw Sidney Poitier on screen, I was probably 10 or 11,” he added. “That was a different image, an image I had never seen before, on screen.

“The African-Americans I saw, they danced, they were buffoons, that was the image. So Sidney brought another image.”

History, Glover said, had enabled him to play a wide range of roles because of the changes taking place in society.

“I think cinema has played a great role in our re-imagining ourselves,” he said.

More ammunition for the brown hordes to justify hating the whites they can’t compete with. Let’s face it, they’re not going to delve into history books to get the whole picture.

Confirmation Bias is an interesting phenomenon. The brain makes a quick decision on what it wants to believe and then it will filter information, absorbing anything that confirms the bias and ignoring that which does not. White Neo-liberals have for nearly fifty years been throwing fragments of ‘knowledge’ to minorities that they have used to foster and confirm a bias they had been struggling to justify.

“The African-Americans I saw, they danced, they were buffoons, that was the image. So Sidney brought another image.”

Hollywood has been giving us false images of both blacks and whites since the first film was shot there. Just not in the way Danny Glover would like us to think. Say, they’re doing it again…

It turns out Hugo Chavez isn’t all bad, even if it is unwittingly.

Why is this movie not going to be filmed in Haiti, itself?
I suppose it is because Haiti has been environmentally devastated with great poverty, massive slums, uncontrolled polllution, and extreme deforestation these past two centuries.

In 1969, when I was a boy of 13, my entire family was on a Christmas vacation cruise on the Queen Elizabeth 2, in the Caribbean. One of the cruise stops was in Haiti. Of all the islands my family went to, Haiti was a dreadful place to visit, even for one day. So I can say that I have actually been there, even this long ago.

I am not justifying the evil of slavery then, or today in the 21st Century, but when one considers what has become of the island nation of Haiti, since the revolt led by Toussaint-Louverture, I still do not think the Haitian independence revolution is something to celebrate.

Try this for for size to understand the extreme poverty in Haiti. Haitian immigrants, here in the USA, who work such jobs as cab drivers, bell hops, porters, housekeepers, janitors, waiters, and other jobs most Americans consider menial, live like kings compared their fellow Haitians back home on the island!

Danny Glover is a very good actor. But, I think a better movie about Haiti, for him to make would be a contemporary movie in which the protagonist, sympathetically portrayed, would be a Haitian who immigrates to New York City, becomes a cab driver by day, and goes to night school, to better improve his lot in life.

I really like different kinds of movies, especially those they are independent of the Hollywood system. I would certainly go see a movie about this period in history, because, let’s face it, it’s fascinating.

That said, I used to work in film and commercial production. The reason why so many movies and TV shows are “white” oriented is because white people have the most money. They are more likely to spend money going to the movies and to buy those products that are advertised on TV. It’s racist because it’s a sound business decision to be racist. The reason these producers want a white character is because they want to make sure that white people go see the film. Basically, they want to recoup their investment. $30 million bucks is a HUGE amount to be asking for a non-Hollywood type movie. Most indies don’t make even close to that at the box office. That’s the real reason these producers don’t want to invest without a white star.

And we all know what a great paradise the blacks have built for themselves over the past 205 years in Haiti don’t we? When a boatload of HIV-stricken Haitians set off in the water, where do they go, back to ‘Mother Africa’ or the “evil” USA?

There are no white heroes because Haiti is the first nation in which blacks completed the genocide of whites.

What? No black concerns would fund him either?
I wonder if his film will showcase how successful a black-run country can turn out to be … you know, like the way Haiti is now.

Easily one of the biggest hate-mongers in Hollywood.

He’s living proof the more blacks are catered to the more they hate you and the more they whine like spoiled babies.

If there are any non-self-hating Whites left anywhere in this nation, they can make an eloquent statement to this White-hating jerk who has only made his money due to Whites by boycotting this movie and anyone or any organization that promotes it. White people! Get some self respect! Stand up to your enemies before they wipe you out! You claim to love your children! Show them! Stand up to those who hate you and who would destroy you!

As I recall, the trouble didn’t really start until the French granted the slaves their freedom. I think only about 40-50 French families managed to escape. The slaughter of the Whites in Haiti by the Blacks is something that the Southern Whites were well aware of and was one more thing that drove them to secede. The Northern fanatics were hoping to start a slave revolt in the South. That’s what that psychopath John Brown was up to. He was funded by a group of fanatical Yankee abolitionists. They were quite bloodthirsty and hated Southern Whites.

By the way, the first man killed by John Brown at Harper’s Ferry was a free Black man who ran over to see what was going on. Ironic, no?

The ending should show clips of all the murder, mayhem, and war that has occurred since that revolution. Maybe the last bit should show a family smiling and sitting around having a nice dinner in their shack while people shoot each other and die in the background, and then are raped and killed by random thugs.

Years ago while waiting for a doctor’s appointment, I happen to browse one of the National Geographic magazines lying in the waiting room. Haiti was one of the articles in this magazine and I’ll never forget when I read the legend. Capital, land area, ethic makeup, etc, until I came accross religion, to wit: Catholic 75%, Protestant 25% (Voodoo widely practice).

What’s going on?

This is Ross again. I made a geographic error by saying “the island nation of Haiti”. Haiti is on an island, but it has a border with the Dominican Republic.

When I was 17 in 1973, my family took another Christmas vacation in the Carribean. This time it was by plane to the Dominican Republic for about two weeks, as far as I can remember.

Ironically, on this vacation I found the Dominican Republic a very much more pleasant place to visit than Haiti, despite being next door to Haiti. I could even go back to the Dominican Republic for another visit. I wonder why the Dominican Republic was a more pleasant country to visit than Haiti?

Get a clue Danny boy. Hollywood doesn’t care if there are no white heroes, and they don’t care if the film is anti-white. Hollywood only cares about making money.

They just told you that because they didn’t want to tell you the truth: they don’t think your film will be a money-maker.

Posted by at 1:42 AM on July 26

I would imagine that Mr. Glover has enough money of his own to finance the film, which begs the question, WHY DOESN’T HE?? I also suspect any proceeds from the movie WILL NOT go to bettering Haiti. The film will not be made in Haiti for the same reason Mandela’s birthday was not celebrated in SA, FEAR!!!! and of course, common sense.

Speaking of movies, the new Spike Lee one promises to
be beyond the beyond if the preview is any judge. Heroic Blacks
single handedly are winning WW2 and are hailed as heroes by the
local Italians, especially the women. But beyond his personal
greatness, the chief Black has a magical talisman which augments
his power: an ancient Greek statue head. He uses this head to
heal the poor local Whites. Beyond being insane, this is an in-
credibly offensisve image. But there is truth in it. The Black
headhunters have stolen our cultural know how (our heads) and
use it for their own ends.

Glover should have tried mugabe as he has zillions and surely would finance any film denigrading whites. He would also put the entire massive resources of the zimbabwe motion picture industry behind the project and there is plenty of redundant land on which to shoot. Never mind that the film would not do well in certain countries, there are millions of africans in africa who would gladly pay one days earnings (about US25 cents) just to see such a film. Better take a generator to each venue though as the evil White electricity is in short supply. Would there be sub-titles in swahili?

Now, to be fair, Toussaint-Louverture was a heroic figure—he was a black Frenchman, devoted to universal ideas of liberty, equality, and fraternity. Nothing like the ghetto trash and black racists we have now. If napoleon hadn’t been so brutal, maybe Haiti would have been a model of blacks and whites living together separately in freedom. To blame Toussaint-Louverture for the current troubles of Haiti would be like blaming the National Front in South Africa for the state of that country today. Both of them fought for a cause and lost, and race realists should resist the two deviations of mainstream minority worship and blind hatred of all nonwhites. We should be conscious of the path not taken instead of reflexively condemning everyone without white skin.

Back in the 80’s I actually enjoyed the Lethal weapon movies he made with Mel Gibson, until I found out what he was really like. Today when avoid all his movies like the plague, and even used to hit the mute button or change the channel when he would appear in a commercial. Just can’t stand the guy any more.

There are two black actors I’m really getting tired of. Actually, it’s the media boot-licking towards them that I’m getting tired of. Morgan Freeman and Danny Glover. I’m so sick of the constant adulation. Denzel Washington comes in third. It’s just constant and never ending. I feel the same way about Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie. Too much is too much. Hollywood had become so pathetic an institution with their remake of TV shows into movies and in general lack of creativity.

I’m so glad there’s at least an element to all this I can laugh at, even as it disgusts and angers me.

It’s the irony, piled on so richly and thickly: D. Glover, “well-known for fighting against discrimination” through his membership in the Black Actors Workshop, complains about the French (& British, & Americans) for not being eager enough to give him millions of dollars to make a movie about Haiti, first among black nations to realize the black dream of killing all whites.

Will Danny Glover show the massacre of Whites that followed their victory?
The Haitians killed every man, woman and child and that’s a fact.

After the French and Indian War, which they lost to the British, the French had to cede something to the victors. Some in London wanted the island of Haiti, which was the richest in the New World at that time. Ben Franklin, as I recall, counselled the Brits to take Canada instead - which they did. But some in London had thought Haiti more valuable than Canada! Haiti did become the first independent Black nation. From one of the richest in the New World, to the poorest. Shades of Zimbabwe, and perhaps in the near future, South Africa.——HM

Wasn’t Danny Glover the actor who was not able to hail a taxi in NYC? Hasn’t the govt made taxi-driving one of the most dangerous occupations in the nation by forcing taxi drivers to pick up those most likely to rob, assault, and even kill them? Once many whites drove taxis; what percentate of taxis drivers are still white - and alive?
And what happened to the whites of Haiti? Milwaukee had a “Black Holocaust Museum.” Unfortunately, there seems to be need of a White Holocaust Museum too.————HM

Reply to Ross;

The Dominican Republic is a more pleasant place then Haiti for a very simple reason. Blacks have been in charge of Haiti for a much longer time and have had that much more time and opportunity to run it into the ground. Haiti also lacks what even D.R. has, a miniscule amount of Whites. Haiti was once one of the wealthiest places in the Americas. It has been exclusively populated, controlled and organized by blacks - and blacks alone - since the earliest years of the nineteenth century. Blacks have little or no organizational capacity, wealth-building skills and know-how to develop a modern, peaceful, prosperous state. You could just drag Haiti all the way across the Atlantic and it would fit in perfectly with Africa. Just another example of Africans creating Africa everywhere they go. Haiti is a gigantic Detroit, without the support of the state of Michigan and the federal government in Washington. David Duke in his writings contrasts Haiti with Iceland, how difficult it was for the Norse to create a modern and successful economy there in such isolation and cold latitude. He contrasts Haiti with its warm and balmy weather. Then he speculated on how each island would be and how its inhabitants would fare if their populations were suddenly switched; Haitians all in Iceland and the Icelandic people all in Haiti. Fascinating read.

Has anyone ever asked the residents of Michigan what they think of all of their state tax money going to support Detroit, or what the white Christian residents think of the Muslim take over of their state?

Did Danny ask the Haitians or the Africans for money and get turned down?

And of course, the state of Haiti today says it all, as well as the fact that Danny isn’t able to film there due to the results of 200 years of black rule.

Come to think of it, I can’t think of a single country on earth run by a black that isn’t a complete and total mess.

So of course we’re planning on electing a black president…

“‘Toussaint,’ Glover’s first project as film director, is about Francois Dominique Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803), a former slave and one of the fathers of Haiti’s independence from France in 1804, making it the first black nation to throw off imperial rule and become a republic.”

Yes, a film about a pack of blacks butchering whites to “throw off imperial rule” and establish their “first” republic?

Will it show how Haiti ends up by 2008?

Living off the white man’s handouts and voodoo.

As always, God help us all!

Glover is on the wrong track. The film should be shot in
Haiti for the sake of authenticity—old ruins, forts, actual plantation sites, etc.

Glover could have raised the money for the film in Africa on the same basis that Venezuela is able to produce some of the funds: oil. Angola, Gabon, Nigeria, Libya could have been approached for some of the funds. After all, it is claimed that Toussaint’s origins are in what was once called Dahomey in West Africa.

The claim that the film won’t sell in Europe is only partially true. There are probably 3 to 4 million blacks in Europe and that’s why the $30 million investment would be quickly recouped. Many Europeans would also go to see it—out of curiosity—given that France’s Napoleon was much involved to the point of tricking Toussaint into capture.

The DVD Nigerian film business is extremely lucrative in West Africa so all Glover has to do to is to put the film on a DVD track as soon as possible and his profits will be assured. And of course the fact that the lead actors are U.S. blacks means that he is already assured a profit margin on his relatively small investment.

Funny how they make that INHUMANLY MURDEROUS BLOODBATH which wiped out White Men, Women & Children an “Independence Movement.” What is NOT funny, nor surprising, is Glover’s adulation for the leader of that sadistic coup. Danny Glover has ALWAYS been a ‘Black Supremacist’ right up there with Morgan Freeman. Of course, we Southerners still have to sit and swallow lie after lie of HATE propaganda about how “evil” the verifiably noble Confederacy supposedly was. Has anyone seen the Lincoln Idolatry movie ‘National Treasure’? At one point in the movie John Voight proclaimed “Just think if the Confederacy had gotten hold of that gold they would have won the Civil War. MY GOD!”

Posted by P Norman at 12:10 PM on July 27

An earlier commentator stated a need for a “White Memorial Museum ” ,ala, the black one in Milwaukee; well we have had one the last 70 years or so, it is named ” The Lincoln Memorial ” in appropriately enough, our nation’s capital. Lincoln, an atheist, quoting scripture when politically advantages were needed, caused the most American blood shed and murder by initiating our own pogrom/holocaust by his tyranical, treasonous, unconstituional genocide on our Southern sisters and brothers, named the ” Civil War ” or better, ” the War of Northern Aggression “! (aka, mass murder).

While I admired Danny Glover’s electrifying performance in Raisin in the Sun (1989), I don’t think much of his planned film about Francois Dominique Toussaint Louverture. His financial backing by the Marxist anti-Semitic Hugo Chavez tells me the film will be little more than Marxist, multicultural, anti-white propaganda.

Actually, the Haitian revolution was fomented and helped by England and Spain. The revolution occurred during the 25 year wars of the French revolution and Bonaparte against the rest of Europe. The Spanish and English were the enemies of the French and helped the Hatians.

The Spanish navy surrounded Haiti to keep French reinforcements away. The English masons sent provacatuers to spread masonic revolutionary rhetoric among the Haitians.

It worked. Haiti became free of France and began its long descent into savagery, poverty and total deforestation.

The White heroes were the Spanish sailors who kept French reinforcements away and the English masons who created the revolution and selected Toussaint as leader.

I don’t see the problem. If movies can depict blacks as heroes and geniuses, then surely they can depict whites as Haitian slaves.

Nigeria, for all its oil wealth is just another failed African state run by black incompetents, and it is on the verge of implosion right this minute. Corruption is even worse there than it is in Detroit, Atlanta, and New Orleans. This means, of course, that DVD sales in Nigeria are a bad, bad investment.

This racist endeavor by the black hate monger Daniel Glover will bankrupt him as it should, since the story line is based on lies and exaggeration.

The only way the venture could be an even greater disaster is to have the mentally challenged Spike Lee involved.

1.   There is no such thing as a Black Frenchman.   Frenchmen are White.   AFRICANS are Black.

2.   The only reason he was devoted to the “universal ideas of liberty, equality, and fraternity” was because he was what would now be termed a Marxist, and he was exactly like the ghetto trash and black racists we have now.   Those type always are.   It is precisely why they do these things.   Those words were the battle cry of the Leftist revolution in France in 1791, and have been so for every Marxist uprising everywhere since.

I am what you would consider a white person. I do not see color because I am a spiritual person. I believe God created human beings with different shades of color and physical features. God could have had some fun and made us all purple and I still believe we would have found a way to kill each other simply by looking for a small difference like a different accent. I am ashamed of some of the so called white perfect people in this forum. Really ignorant and racists. To say that blacks are not capable of govern themselves is not true. Studies shows all races have the same brain and intelligence. Throughout history blacks in Africa managed successful kingdoms. The original Egyptians who built the pyramids were blacks. The Bible even talks about black kingdoms. King Solomon fell in love with a black queen. Blacks were great inventors. The traffic light that you stop to everyday while driving was invented by a black man. Someone is this forum said that blacks did not defeat the French by themselves and were helped by the British and Spaniards. That is simply not true. The Haitians actually fought the British and Spanish as well and won! The Haitians had to kill the whites to gain their freedom because they were being killed and abused through slavery by the whites. There are records showing white slave masters pulling out slaves eyes, chopping off their hands and feet and cutting off their heads if they did not obey or tried to escape. On the island of Haiti/Hispaniola, the whites nearly wiped out all of the native Indians (Tainos). The reason that Haiti became poor is not because blacks post-independence mismanaged the island, it is because after Haiti went independent, the major powers (England/Spain/France/United States) agreed not to trade with Haiti. They said that they will keep Haiti isolated and Haiti will never succeed. France demanded Haiti to pay millions of dollars in gold so that it will not re-invade Haiti with greater number of troops. Americans went to Haiti to create tensions between groups for profits. Namely, to sell their old weapons that were obsolete in the United States. Hence, created civil unrests in Haiti for decades. Furthermore, Mr. Glover is correct. Hollywood’s movies have white heros. This is a movie based on historical facts. Blacks from got their freedom from whites by killing them. As a result the Haitian Revolution set the stage for other slaves in the Americas to gain their freedom. Haiti even sent troops to Georgia to fight in the civil war. Haiti helped Simon Bolivar of Venezuela get their independence from Spain. That is why Hugo Chavez is funding this film. A lot of people in Venezuela does not want their country to invest in this film but most of these people do not know their history and forgot that Haiti helped Venezuela gain their independence. However, Hugo Chavez being an educated man knows that Haiti helped Venezuela and he his showing his gratitude by funding the movie. The movie is a 30 million dollar project. Venezuela is funding 18. It is normal that the movie is being shot there. It would have been better if it was shot in Haiti but Venezuela put up so much money, it would be an honor that is shot there. The leads in the movie has no Haitian actors. Danny Glover is also a business man. In order to atract audience, big name actors are necessary. I am sure there will secondary roles played by Haitians. The Haitian government could not grant any money simply that Haiti is a bankrupt country. It does not matter who are the actors or where it is being filmed. The idea is that this story needs to be told. The Haitian Revolution truly was so important in freing slaves in the Americas and stopped “slave ships excursions” to Africa. By the way the Dominican Republic benefited from the Haitian revolution because the the freed slaves/Haitian Army went into invaded the Dominican Republic and freed their slave brothers and sisters from the Spaniards. I can’t wait to see the movie. I wish it complete success worldwide!!!

No matter where the movie will be filmed, the most important thing is to teach the history of Hispaniola island to the whole world.
There are still racist people who don’t see this idea in very good
way since a great deal of them are expecting the death of all intel
lectual Haitians to come up with their racist idea of what Haitian
revolution was a supposition but not a reality.First of all,I want
to thank Danny Glover for such a good idea,we,haitianpeople, love you.
Good luck and don’t let them play on mind.!!!
