Nursing Assistant Sexually Assaulted Older Patients While on Duty, Clearwater Police Say

Kathryn Varn, Tampa Bay Times, September 18, 2019

A nursing assistant is accused of sexually assaulting four older patients at health care facilities where he worked over the past three years, according to police.

In two of the cases, Falo Kane, 32, is accused of assaulting a woman who was in a wheelchair and another woman who was left disabled by a stroke, police said. During two of the incidents, detectives said he was changing their adult diapers.

Kane was brought in for questioning Monday, confessed to the assaults and wrote one apology letter to all four women, said Clearwater police spokesman Rob Shaw.

Kane was working as a patient care technician at Mease Countryside Hospital when he was arrested on a charge of misdemeanor battery on May 17, 2018, accused of inappropriately touching a patient there, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. He pleaded no contest in January and was sentenced to 30 days in jail plus 11 months probation.

A spokeswoman for BayCare Health System, which operates Mease, said Kane worked there for two weeks in May 2018 and was suspended when a patient complained about him. He was fired when he failed to meet with hospital officials about the allegations against him. The allegations were the same ones that led to his misdemeanor battery arrest.
