The Air in NYC Is Killing Kids’ IQ

Carl Campanile, New York Post, May 26, 2015

The city’s air is polluting children’s brains.

Big Apple kids exposed to high levels of airborne filth and economic hardship have lower IQs that will haunt them into adulthood, according to an exhaustive, first-of-its-kind study by Columbia University.

{snip}

Researchers reached the alarming conclusion by tracking the development of 276 minority children from Harlem, Washington Heights and the South Bronx for seven years–starting while their moms were pregnant.

The kids who were exposed to the most pollutants and came from the poorest families scored 6.6 points lower on the overall IQ test than others in the group.

{snip}

In addition, the kids scored 8 points lower for “working memory,” which is what people use to plan and carry out behavior, and 5.7 points lower for “perceptual reasoning,” which allows people to visualize solutions to non-verbal problems.

Following their births, researchers examined blood from each baby’s umbilical cord for biological markers that reveal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAH], toxic chemicals created by the burning of gas, diesel, heating oil and other products.

The moms also carried air monitors in backpacks during their third trimesters, and were later interviewed repeatedly about their ability to adequately feed, clothe and house their kids. The groundbreaking study stemmed from ongoing research that has shown how prenatal exposure to PAH is tied to a host of childhood ills, including developmental delays, reduced verbal skills and symptoms of anxiety and depression.

Well, give them credit, they are certainly creative when it comes to placing the blame for black failure on anything but the blacks themselves.

    • Publius Pompilius Quietus

The racial bell curve, which outlines the innate hierarchy of the races, is a worldwide phenomenon. Further, the bell curve exists whether or not the persons are raised in a rich or poor environment or by members of their own racial group. Therefore, more and more absurd theories (see above) are trotted out to respond. Concerning this particular one, people with low IQs are likely to live in dirty places to begin with, so the logic that Campanile uses is a simple replacing of correlation with causation.

    • Oil Can Harry

Funny how the whites, Jews and Asians here in NYC haven’t been turned into morons by the polluted air.

We must all be wearing invisible gas masks.

      • Fair-skin privilege?

        • Lexonaut

          Severe melanin deficit disorder.

      • carriewhite64

We store our gas masks in our privilege backpacks.

      • IBWHITE

Dat raciss air be goin up dem flat noses on purpose.

    • Light from the East

I bet they dare not to do the research including whites and Asians.

  • Brady

The urban Chinese breathe some of the most polluted air in the world, their IQ isn’t low at all.

    • propagandaoftruth

Shhhh! Black folk need excuses and eco-commies need reasons to implement green Marxism. Shhhhh!

    • Their water quality can only be described as “loathsome” as well. I once picked out a package of frozen crawdads at Wal Mart. Looking at the label, I saw “Product of China”. I put it right back.

      • carriewhite64

That was smart. I was shocked to see the same in my local Walmart, and I live in Louisiana! Where you can buy fresh crawfish in season on the side of the road. Caught locally, of course.

Hello MCS, I am pleased that there is at least one other person out there who thinks like I do on these matters.
I understand that faecal contamination as well as mercury and other heavy metal contaminants have been detected in Chinese sourced processed food.
As a side issue I used to enjoy tinned Asparagus, it used to be made here in Australia. Then it was imported from NZ, that was OK. It was then sourced from China, I don’t think anyone in their right mind would buy it (above reasons). It now comes from Peru, has all the well known brand names but it is total rubbish.

    • Illidan Stormragge

There likely is something to pollutants and IQ levels and general bodily health. I read a study that says people living in highly polluted areas lose 10 years of their life on average, but again it’s always correlation vs causation; impossible to control for every variable unless the groups tested are virtually identical since birth and given the same background. I doubt these studies do such exhaustive methods.

    • Light from the East

Beijing is indeed terribly polluted compared to NYC but you know the average IQ of Chinese in Beijing.

  • Well now we know the next excuse they’re going to use after they can’t use the lead paint excuse anymore.

    • Oil Can Harry

Right this moment there are surely liberal white and Jewish NYC trial lawyers working on a massive class action ghetto-lottery shakedown lawsuit on behalf of “da community who din du nuffin”.

  • Chip Carver

Atmospheric aggression? Is that what it’s come to?

  • WR_the_realist

They conclude that bad air causes the kids to be dumb and their parents to be poor. It is at least as likely that the parents being dumb causes them to have dumb kids, as well as causing them to being poor enough to have to live in a neighborhood with bad air.

  • Ed

These academics will come up with anything and everything as the cause for black failure. It’s slavery, segregation, lead paint, racism, tests and now air.

    • WR_the_realist

Soon we will be told that global warming causes black children to have lower IQs.

      • Lady Texas

        The kind of already are:

        Google: global warming and racism

If there’s anything more that libs hate more than “racism,” it’s global warming, and specifically blaming it on “man made industrialization” and “corporations.” When you combine the two, it make for an earth-shattering hipster-porn, propaganda piece to put in the Huffington Post or Salon. it would literally cause libtards to drown in their own crocodile tears!

********I tried to include a link, but Amren would not let me post it; could a moderator please tell me why Amren makes it so hard to post links?********

        • Kenner

It delays them to make sure they’re not ‘tin-foil hat’ sites.
Amren is closely moderated; that has it’s pros and cons.

          • a1781054

You cannot talk about the tribe on here due to moderation, hehehehehe. Great site though.

        • Lexonaut

Your AmRen life will be easier if you simply don’t include links of any kind. Tell people what google search mask to use, or spell the link out using the letters dot instead of period and you’ll still be able to make your points.

      • TruthBeTold

They’ve been working to incite black ‘outrage’ over global warming.

        • Alexandra1973

Tell them it’s all YT’s fault. That’ll get them going.

        • carriewhite64

I think that is ironic, since global warming is usually linked to human industrial activity. In my experience, black people are the most consumer obsessed, most materialistic, biggest consumers of first world gadgets and junk, and least concerned with pollution and environmental issues. In every neighborhood I’ve ever lived in, the black family has unbelievable amounts of trash on pick-up day and never use the free recycle bins provided by my town. I’ve never seen an exception to this. I’ve seen industrial size garbage bags full of Styrofoam containers and cups from one family twice a week. In fact, that is so common that I can tell a black family’s home by their trash. I have NEVER met a black person who is concerned with environmental issues, including global climate issues. In fact, if they had to choose between their Styrofoam plates and plastic go cups and worldwide climate warming, there is no doubt that they would choose their plastic junk.

      • propagandaoftruth

I think miscegenation and diversity are lowering the Big Apple’s average IQ more than anything…

    • TruthBeTold

      ENDLESS theories and excuses.

When one theory fails to raise black achievement they come up with another theory.

      And on and on.

    • propagandaoftruth

When even “prestigious” Columbia University researchers can’t distinguish the difference between correlation and causation because of their Lysenkoist devotion to Marxism-progressivism…

What Marxist-progressive propaganda factories our schools have become.

      • Blackfish

The ironic thing is that Columbia is in the same neighborhood!

        • propagandaoftruth

          That’s pretty darned ironic, lol.

  • superlloyd

Another pitiful excuse for genetically retarded negroids.

  • IstvanIN

Lets see, 60 years ago there was no SNAP or WIC. Leaded gasoline was the norm and I bet the air was much dirtier then than now. And “minorities” are still dumb. Geesh.

    • We moved to Colorado when I was six, in 1972. Before then, we had lived in New Jersey, which might as well be called “The Chemical Plant State”. No problems with us.

      • Alexandra1973

I hear neighboring Delaware is also filled with chemical plants.

I was born and raised in the Detroit area. You’d think with all the cars that used to be manufactured there….

      • IstvanIN

When I was a kid if the house shook violently it meant something blew-up at a refinery. One year it turned out to be a (minor) earthquake. Everyone was outside in the middle of the night looking towards the river for flames. The next morning we found out it was an earthquake.

  • LHathaway

I like how some poster’s note the, ‘battles between victim groups’. This article could ignite a battle between the different biological determinists. By this time, those ranks include nearly everyone. I suppose the battle is over which of the biological determinists get to be in charge and tell their story.

  • DCRealist

Air pollution is a nice way to target both whites as people and their standards of living as reasons for low black IQ. Just a little bit more of a stretch (it’s coming) and global warming can explain it too!

    • Alexandra1973

Funny thing is, we tend to take better care of our cars. Who’s more likely to have a car burning oil, for example?

I live in poverty (by government standards) but somehow I manage to keep my minivan running…thing’s a 1997.

      • PissedOffScientist

Africans live in the moment, vehicle maintenance, especially preventative does not cross their minds.
Planning ahead is just not wired into the Congoid DNA.

        • Alexandra1973

          Exactly my point.

I had to take out a loan (which I can afford to pay back) to repair my van–I needed all spark plugs, wires, and coil pack replaced since everything was misfiring. I thought about using the money I didn’t use for repairs to pay back half of it…then I thought, what if something else goes wrong?

I’m glad I kept the money aside because now my back brakes need work and I think I have a clogged fuel filter.

Before taking out the loan I looked at my budget and determined what I could afford. White Privilege at work, baby!

      • Lexonaut

        “… .thing’s a 1997.”

        That’s a new car. My Escort is a 1990.

    • carriewhite64

Would black people be willing to give up the lifestyles and standard of living that evil first-world men have provided for them in order to be more environmentally responsible?

  • Lady Texas

I guess that explains the low IQ of blacks in the non-industrailized Mississippi Delta or the Alabama Black-belt!

    • John Smith

      Raycissm caused dat.

  • Ograf

    Air is racissss !

  • TruthBeTold

Again, the solution is to relocate them to Africa and let them live in their natural environment.

  • Jason Lewis

    Yep, it’s the air.

    • TruthBeTold

      And before that, white privilege.

And before that, the legacy of slavery.

      And before that, systemic racism.

      And before that, institutional racism.

      And before that, segregation.

      And before that, Jim Crow.

      And before that, slavery.

We keep fixing what they tell is to blame but nothing every works.

    • propagandaoftruth

      Miasmas.

  • Caesar Avgvstvs

The Air in NYC Is Killing Kids’ IQ

No, it’s dysgenic breeding among blacks and mestizos in NYC that is “killing their kids’ IQ.”

  • ricpic

The most obvious rejoinder is how come the extreme crowding, dirt and pollution of the Lower East Side of Manhattan in 1900 didn’t stop the Jewish, Italian and Polish children of immigrants from rising into the American middle class in one generation! Or if not the children, their children. Two generations and they were on their way and largely assimilated, bad air and all.

    • TruthBeTold

And even as little as 50 years ago before the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act we had White schools producing thriving White students.

      • Cuddles

These blacks migrated from the south in the 60s and are foreign malcontents.

  • listenupbub

So the Chinese must be dumb as heck, then, right?

    • Cuddles

They’re coughing up lung butter like it’s going out of style.

      • listenupbub

You mean the hacking and spitting? I had a Chinese roommate who did that compulsively every two minutes.

  • Lady Texas

I thought the NY Post was a “conservative” news publication?

Libtards will continue to search high and low for a virtually nonexistent environmental explanation for the iq or school achievement gap; while ignoring the big flashing red sign right in front of them that reads “genetics causes low iq as well as the high crime rate of your pets.”

    • Lexonaut

A remark I’ve started occasionally making to blacks who demand affirmative action is …

Everybody knows that high income causes high IQ, unfairly making it impossible for blacks to compete.

I don’t use it often because it usually shuts them right up whereas my goal is usually to get them to keep jabbering.

  • MekongDelta69

Only a faux leftist ‘study’ from radical Columbia U. could come up with the latest, preposterous excuse that dirty air ONLY affects black and brown chilluns…

  • journey

One major flaw the study conveniently over looked the IQ/intelligence of blacks/Hispanics are lower globally in comparison to Asians and whites. This IQ/intelligence difference is also reflected in the differences in development of advanced societies and anti-social behaviors.

Of course, this propaganda “study” was funded by tax dollars mostly from whites.

    • Lexonaut

” IQ/intelligence of blacks/Hispanics are lower globally in comparison to Asians and whites.”

Right. It’s the whites and especially Asians who live in regions of high air pollution. The people who live in the areas that are pollution-free are still enslaving and eating one another.

  • Diana Moon Glampers

    Ah, yes.
A study that perfectly supports HUD’s “affirmatively furthering fair housing” plan to destroy each and every white neighborhood.

Because we are hogging all the clean air.

  • 4321realist

Well, lower I.Q. doesn’t mean blacks are unintelligent anymore, it now means they are victims once again, just exactly like their out-of-control crime figures aren’t highlighted as severe societal problems, but racism, because the only data reported by leftist dregs in the media is that more blacks are incarcerated.

Every media pig deserves to live in the midst of the society he/she is helping to create, right along side creepy, weird academics who badly need a dose of reality.

  • De Doc

Do they ever bother to control for race in these studies?

  • slobotnavich

This is the most laughably vomititious “scientific study” ever released. The kids “from the poorest families” scored lowest because they had the dumbest parents and came from the dumbest gene-pool. Could anybody really believe that the dumber kids all came from areas in which motor vehicles of all types were more prevalent. Were this possible the areas surrounding the LA freeways would be inhabited entirely by cretins and other mental defectives.

  • Sam

Obviously we need to start forcing white kids to breath noxious fumes, until their average IQ drops about 15 points.

  • George Moriarty

In our part of the world some Pacific Islanders are blaming rising sea levels etc on global warning because of our use of fossil fuels etc.
The corollary of this is that they feel that they should have the right to immigrate to Australia because it is our fault if their atoll gets flooded. (I don’t think it has happened yet.)

    • Alexandra1973

I heard that huge earthquake in the Indian Ocean that caused the 2004 tsunami actually knocked some islands out of place. Bet they didn’t consider that.

    • Cuddles

Let them drown or give them settle on Bikini Atoll.

  • Lexonaut

“The kids who were exposed to the most pollutants and came from the poorest families scored 6.6 points lower on the overall IQ test than others in the group.”

Indeed. Lower IQ parents live in poorer, dirtier neighborhoods, and they have lower IQ kids. Now … I want my $100,000 grant money for my study and report, please.

    • pennawhytmn

But haven’t you learned anything? “We are all equal at birth.” All our traits are determined by the environment that is forced upon us.

      • Lexonaut

Chinese coal smoke must be a wonderful thing. Look at all they’ve accomplished in the last ten years while being the most polluting nation on earth.

  • Light from the East

When I read the words “Harlem, Washington Heights and the South Bronx”, I definitely know something about the report is wrong.

  • crockadoodle6

True:True:Unrelated….1. Blacks have lower IQs, 2. City dwellers inhale more exhaust, 3. Neither is related.

  • archer

This is a silly article, the conditions in Harlem are no different than south of the park, actually much of Harlem has been gentrified and is cleaner than lower Manhattan. The whole city is old despite the constant adding of newer high rises and office buildings, I wouldn’t live there for all the money in the world. The auto traffic is misery and the drivers themselves are way too aggressive. Maybe the Chinese will build us a new city with all the trillions we’ve given them, or should I say our treasonous politicians gave them.

    • Spikeygrrl

OK, when they give you all the money in the world to live there, you can give it to me (minus a hefty finder’s fee, of course) and I will live in Manhattan for you. Do we have a deal?

Although I’ll probably die here in Texas — all in all, a good place to live and die! — Manhattan remains my Chosen Home Town. Even though it has been 30 years, I will continue to miss it every day that I am no longer IN IT.

  • pennawhytmn

“IQ testing is pseudoscience and culturally biased, but we will use it here to prove that minorities are disadvantaged”. I guess when it is beneficial to the narrative, IQ is a meaningful tool?

I swear these people could look out a window, see raindrops falling, and wet sidewalks, and conclude the wet sidewalks caused the rain..

  • Realist

    More pseudoscience.

  • Kevin

I thought that IQ tests were meaningless …

Oh its only meaningless when we talk about the Black and White IQ gap! I get it now!

  • disqus_Xz3UA6obwj

It is beyond belief how intellectually dishonest the egalitarian excuse makers will be.

“The kids who were exposed to the most pollutants and came from the poorest families scored 6.6 points lower on the overall IQ test than others in the group.”

So which is it, the pollutants or the “poor” genes inherited by the “poor” quality children from their poor quality parents?

  • Joy

This study doesn’t have any kind of control group. I have no doubt that the ghetto kids have traces of chemicals from burning gas and heating oil in their bloodstreams. I’m pretty sure we all do- few of us can avoid being exposed to this. Did they track any really smart or wealthier people, test their umbilical cord for trace chemicals, and track their child’s progress?
I’d be willing to bet the Super Mommies of Park Slope would test about the same for common urban chemical exposure.
No control group of any kind- a cute trick I’m seeing a lot of these days.

  • BlueSonicStreak

The study only says “minority,” so maybe that group is somewhat racially mixed.

Also, isn’t the black-white gap smallest in childhood, as blacks physically mature faster than whites?

  • Spikeygrrl

Ummmm. Were all the study subjects of the same minority race? Was any attempt whatsoever made to run separate stats on Negroes, Lationos, Asians, Indians (dot, not feather), und so weiter?

Having lived in Manhattan — AND LOVED IT!!! — I know that it is utterly preposterous to posit that ambient air pollution is statistically significantly different ANYWHERE in the Manhattan/Brooklyn/Bronx/Queens area, plus large chunks of commuter communities in New Jersey and Connecticut. Seriously, you can cut the air with a bread knife anywhere around there. Wasn’t it Mayor Lindsay who famously quipped, “I like to SEE the air I breathe”?

Where’s the affluent control group? In Manhattan it is common to walk only 2 or 3 blocks to pass from the richest areas to the poorest.

Columbia is just doing what Columbia DOES. Situated where Harlem unexpectedly overran them in the 1980s, they are fighting to retain their real estate and research funding by being as politically and racially “progressive” as every other Ivy. In the long term: Good luck with that, ya maroons.
