Sleep Training ‘May Reduce Racism and Sexism’

James Gallagher, BBC News, May 29, 2015

Levels of unconscious racist and sexist bias have been reduced by manipulating the way the brain learns during sleep.

A team at Northwestern University, Chicago, played sounds while people slept to trigger and enforce memories of an exercise earlier in the day.

The trial on 40 people, published in the journal Science, showed the changes lasted at least a week.

Experts said the findings had potential in many situations, but also raised ethical questions.

Sexual and racial prejudice are common but may often be unintentional, says the Northwestern team.

They cite studies in computer games when people chose to shoot black characters more often than white ones or men being favoured over women despite having identical job applications.

Breaking bias?

People’s prejudices were assessed with a series of publicly available tests at the start of the study.

They were then given “counter-bias training”. During the session, pictures of faces were paired with words that were the opposite of widely-held stereotypes.

So female faces were paired with words like “maths” or black faces with positive words like “sunshine”.

Distinctive sounds were played during the counter-bias training and were played again at low volume during a 90-minute afternoon nap.

The result was a reduction in sexual and racial bias scores, which persisted for at least a week.

So could this really make someone less sexist or racist?

Prof Ken Paller, the director of the cognitive neuroscience programme at Northwestern University, told the BBC News website: “We didn’t have people interact with or make decisions about other people, so that sort of experiment is needed to know the full effects of the methods we used.

“But we suggest that modifying unconscious social bias is likely to influence the extent to which decisions are influenced by racist or sexist attitudes.”

He argues the technique may have potential in tackling addiction or unhealthy eating.

In a commentary, Gordon Feld and Jan Born from the University of Tubingen praised the study saying: “This is the first to demonstrate that this method can be used to break long-lived, highly pervasive response habits deeply rooted in memory.”

But they cautioned that sleep was a vulnerable state in which people did not have “wilful consciousness”.

They added: “However, Aldous Huxley’s description of a dystopian ‘brave new world’ where young children are conditioned to certain values during sleep reminds us that this research also needs to be guided by ethical considerations.”

Prof Paller said there were similarities to subliminal advertising and that there was an ethical discussion to be had.

However, he continued: “More importantly, perhaps, is the question of whether people in positions of authority in society, such as judges and police officers, and perhaps people who make hiring decisions, should have their unconscious bias evaluated and perhaps trained to some standard.”

  • This is getting ridiculous.

If my sleep habits were any indication, well, I’ve made my way through a good chunk of the world’s supermodels in my sleep.

If this doesn’t work, then they’ll have to move on to their last ditch plan to end racial and gender bias: Make every white goy cishet man wear red sparking tap shoes, then have them tap their heels together three times, and say “abracadabra bibbety bobbety boo.” Because science.

    • Publius Pompilius Quietus

“Sleep training” to be antiracist is religious ritual in the International Church of Liberalism, wherein the most deadly sin is racism. Now sacrifice a cow to the spirit of Malcolm X, infidel, to redeem your fallen nature!

    • robinbishop34

I thought Abracadabra was by the Greg Kihn band?

  • Lady Texas

So people like James Watson, Charles Murray, and Jason Richwine all supposedly believe in “crack science,” while “sleep training to reduce racism and sexism” is completely practical and logical?

    Libtards make so much sense!

    • JackKrak

Any science that points to conclusions that are unflattering to blacks is automatically discredited by definition. Every.Single.Time.

But Nobel Prizes await voodoo priests who throw chicken bones on the floor and read the keys to understanding white racism.

  • Brainwashing sounds like lots of fun. Heck – it worked for Patty Hearst.

The SLA was supposedly a CIA operation.

      • Supposed by whom?

        • The Worlds Scapegoat

So now you post messages for COINTELPRO on Amren? The ex-felon thing is just a cover.

    • Veritas

Perhaps they should try the Ludovico Technique employed by the government in Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange.” Simply pin the victim’s eyes open, administer a drug that causes nausea and force them to watch films of evil racists making bigoted statements. The real question is, how much longer are we going to allow these idiots to run our universities, media, and government?

      • LHathaway

Well, the answer is given at the end of that very movie. What does the bureaucrat in charge say at the end of the movie, “we’ll send him somewhere where he can never hurt you again”?

    • John Smith

She was raped by negroes – no fun at all.

  • Jason Lewis

    So does distance.

  • TruthBeTold

Subliminal brainwashing (slipping unnecessary blacks into media, ect) hasn’t worked so now they’re going to try the direct approach.

      Next, in goes the microchip.

      • LHathaway

        How about Google-glasses?

    • Dr. Rieux

That’s because reality keeps intruding. As I fall peacefully to sleep, I often blissfully imagine millions of drug-addled lefties facing their ends, filled with horrible despair as they realize they wasted their entire lives swimming against reality.

    • TrueNorthFree

Or, they could start dumping mind-altering chemicals in the water supply. Oh…right… they’ve been doing that for decades. A recent study from China proves that flouride actually reduces intelligence.

    • Light from the East

In short, liberals can use this technique to brainwash people. On the contrary, we can use the same to spread our message.

  • Jim Kental

Good….. now all blacks should use these and learn to act civilized.

They paired a black man’s face with the word, “shine”? Commence hysteria. This work is not PURE enough!

I’m pretty sure Spielberg is related to the World Controller. Or would be, at any rate.

    • TruthBeTold

Also the short story ‘Harrison Bergeron.’

THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They weren’t only equal before God and the law. They were equal every which way. Nobody was smarter than anybody else. Nobody was better looking than anybody else. Nobody was stronger or quicker than anybody else. All this equality was due to the 211th, 212th, and 213th Amendments to the Constitution, and to the unceasing vigilance of agents of the United States Handicapper General.

  • MekongDelta69

Did they try any of these insane methods on black people?

    Nah… Of course not.

[Btw, it’s not “unconscious”; it’s “subconscious.” Not that I would expect a journalism major to know the difference.]

    • Xanthippe2

Blacks are generally underrepresented in most research studies. It is much lamented in the medical field. I’m “guessing” it is because you have to show up for a certain number of visits at given times and dates. For the same reason studies involving hospitalized vets are much lauded (and often show different results for Blacks and Whites).

      • Dr. Rieux

Generally underrepresented, but I will let you guess in what medical studies they’re overrepresented, and studies of hypertension and sickle cell anemia don’t count.

        • What about new strains of HIV?

          • Dr. Rieux

I do not know about that specifically, but I would wager you are correct, because they are hugely overrepresented in STD studies.

          • Alden

Gay men are worse than blacks Many researchers think that AIDS was actually developed from numerous types of crud
swapped around in gay NYC circles
I remember a nurse who worked in juvenile hall telling me that the black girls down to age 11 and 12 almost all had stds
Liberals caterwaul that blacks have more miscarriages than other races but the rampant stds have a lot to do with miscarriages

      • Alden

Clinical trial companies recruit widely Most subjects do it for the money retired students unemployed and low paid

The blacks wash out because of illegal drug use revealed by blood tests hypertension and diabetes

Successful recruits often have to complete a test Usually they gave to take a placebo home take it at specific times
And record it in an electrical device That washes out some careless and forgetful people who operate in. colored people’s time
And of course they gave to be able to read the ads recruiting clinical trial subjects

And if this doesn’t work too well, there is the next stage. Google e.g.: “Mind Control – Remote Neural Monitoring” (on-line) & “A Chip in the Head” – Michael Snyder (on-line).

  • Dr. Rieux

How long before real-world experiences undo the brainwashing participants underwent?

    • American Tax Payer

That could take years to undo if at all. Some people are highly susceptible to that sort of thing. The “weaker/dumber” ya are, the better it works. But, you’re right, reality itself should be enough to break it. I think sometimes that if someone cannot be “unbrainwashed”, it’s because they really want to believe whatever it is they wrongly believe.

      • I could do it in about two years. I would need to convene a conference.

        • American Tax Payer

Listenupbub had the best idea I’ve ever heard. It was to turn their ideas back on them. They love diversity so they should live among it for not to do so means their words are hollow. I’m paraphrasing of course but that’s the jist of it.

          • I meant something rather like the Wansee Conference. We are all not meant to run away.

          • American Tax Payer

I figured you meant something like that but in the meantime, we can irritate them using their own words against them. I’m fact oriented so I just never thought of asking them when they plan on moving down to the ghetto.

          • Using their own words against them is lots of fun.

“Sleep Training ‘May Reduce Racism and Sexism’”

This of course will only be targeted towards White people. They want to block off all White people’s sense of reality and rid them of their natural preference for their own people that Mother Nature has given to all creatures of the Earth. The diabolical insanity of these anti-racists knows no bounds.

“More importantly, perhaps, is the question of whether people in positions of authority in society, such as judges and police officers, and perhaps people who make hiring decisions, should have their unconscious bias evaluated and perhaps trained to some standard.”

What he really means: “More importantly is that White people should have their unconscious bias evaluated and controlled at all times.”

    • LHathaway

The implication is that only Whites are racist. They don’t seem to be conditioning women and people of to think happy thoughts at the site of White men. The assumption is they already do, they’re not racist. We must assume this since they don’t discuss any effort to pair happy thoughts to pictures of White men. Only Whites are racist. It would seem this article contains some brainwashing of it’s own. At least I’d say it does.

    • Speedy Steve

I am not a racist. I am not a racist.

      You’re in denial.

  • Sick of it

    Brainwashing used to be illegal…

  • jim

You know….if I didn’t know better I would think the stories posted on this site were made up for comedic purposes. But, oh no…this is really how researchers spend their time. Spending millions of taxpayer dollars on studies to combat racism. Truly pathetic.

  • Tarczan

How effective is sleep training in reducing racism when you’re sleeping and a drunken Shitavious wakes up when he smashes down your front door?

    • Hate to think what they’ll be training white people to do in an event like that.

      • SoulInvictus

I can tell you exactly how they think… in the event of attempted rape, rather than an armed defense:
“University of Colorado felt the need to update their website with tips
that included “Tell your attacker that you have a disease or are
menstruating,” and “Vomiting or urinating may also convince the attacker
        to leave you alone.””

Puke and pee yourself in fear. Yup…that is your self defense in lefty nut land. How in the _ are we ruled by these people.

Someone posted on here not too long ago (I had to look it up to believe it) that there was a piece of the Brady anti-gun campaign telling women it was better to permit rape than defend themselves with a gun.

        • guest

Only a libtard would think that these violent criminals can be reasoned with. And did the feminists and women’s rights advocates said anything about how these libtards believe it’s better for women to permit rape than to defend themselves with a gun or did they turn blind eyes and deaf ears to that just like they do when women get attacked and killed by muslims?

  • humura

Wow, now we can be brainwashed after the TV is off!

    • Kill your TV, or at least use it only for watching good movies on DVD.

    • Tim

I have a friend who completely unplugs the TV when he`s not watching it.. He said they were programming 24/7 and that turning it off only takes the screen light off. I used to laugh, not I`m not so sure…

  • American Tax Payer

“subliminal advertising”. Uh oh, that’s what I do. When I put a homeless white face on the cover and fill the pages about immigration, I reckon I’m tricking the masses into believing the same things I do. Oh well…

What they’re really doing is setting up white people to become zombies. When they get attacked by non-whites, they won’t fight back and when they can’t get a job, raise or promotion, they’ll never question why. They’ll stop mating with their own fellow whites and when they hear us saying the kinds of things we do here at Amren, they’ll turn us in to obama’s “citizen police force”.

    • LHathaway

They don’t have to. That is how confident they are of their power. Don’t believe for a second they are not animated by violence, that is what rules them and why they too knuckle under. So great is the fear, they don’t feel they have to resort to violence.

      • American Tax Payer

I’m confused. Who doesn’t have to resort, the non-whites?

        • LHathaway

leftists, those in charge. they don’t feel they need to use violence to get their way, but i do think a fear of violence has something to do with why they get their way. They may go on about ‘tolerance’ what they really expect is for you to be afraid of them, even physically afraid of crossing the line.

  • Xanthippe2

“More importantly, perhaps, is the question of whether people in positions of authority in society, such as judges and police officers, and perhaps people who make hiring decisions, should have their unconscious bias evaluated and perhaps trained to some standard.”

Isn’t this what the climate of Political Correctness is about? And somehow I am thinking ordinary PCness is going to be a lot more effective than listening to certain sounds that were played during your diversity training while you sleep.

    • I know how to cure PC-ness. Since this derives from a mineral deficiency, the cure involves a series of cranial lead-injections. The Turkish gal in London says she wants white men to die. I don’t reckon on doing that for quite a while. I sorely miss shooting, but wouldn’t mind doing it again. I would want my old 1896 “Broomhandle” Mauser, and she could use… well… whatever.

I can’t afford to replace mine like Elvis could, so I use the snap caps instead of live ammo.

So now they’re learning to hate us even when they sleep.

  • Rhialto

Sleep training may be a good idea. How about sleep training for Blacks to make them like Whites and hate criminal behaviour. How about sleep training for Feminists to reduce their hatred for White men. How about sleep training for illegal immigrants to encourage them to return to their home countries.

What do you mean “we,” kemo sabe? I tuned out over a year ago in protest over alpha wave manipulation music that permeates every show and most of the ads.

  • Gotta love it. The nonstop mass-media propaganda, along with indoctrination at work and school, simply isn’t effective enough. Some small number of people insist on thinking for themselves and believing what their own eyes and ears tell them.

For them, we’ll now be controlling their sleep time too.

As far as women are concerned, they are different from men. Vive la différence!

‘Science’ used to be a top flight publication and the envy of any scientist to publicize innovative and groundbreaking research. Now it’s become a hack academic rag that publishes PC behavioral modification garbage research. Pretty sad, if you ask me.

I’ll be anxiously awaiting publication of their next article in the same vein, where they feature the Ludovico Technique from ‘A Clockwork Orange.’

    • I used to read “Discover” magazine until one leftist hack got a bit published about the AK-47 and the 7.62mm X 39 ammo it uses. That round is over-stabilized in that rifle with one turn in seven inches, for the sake of downrange accuracy. This libtard didn’t know what he was talking about, but the rag-mag birdcage-liner editors ran it anyway. A 123-grain .30-cal bullet doesn’t need a one-in-seven rifling twist. In fact, for wound ballistics, this is counterproductive.

    • Jack Burton

Play rap while you sleep and you won’t wake up till the afternoon. You’ll get up late, smoke a blunt, eat some cereal and watch some cartoons. “This is the first to demonstrate that this method can be used to break long-lived, highly pervasive response habits deeply rooted in memory.”

The sleeping brain is indeed susceptible to unconscious habit pattern manipulation.
Years ago, I quit smoking cigs via a bedtime tape that played soothing music laced with anti-smoking subliminal suggestion.
Television is probably the most effective tool in this regard. A minute or less of TV watching and the alert beta wave brain slips into detached awareness/alpha, sometimes referred to as hypnagogia, a dream like state of neither wakefulness nor sleep. In this semi-hypnotic state, one is highly susceptible to suggestion.
Frightening, when one considers the hours of TV viewed by most people who neither detect nor understand the insidious, constant exposure to the nobility of miscegenation and multiculturalism spewed by our treacherous media.
